| body | These are the notes I made from a recent weaning course I attended: Spoon fed vs baby led weaning (e.g. puree vs whole #food) There are pros and cons with both, but if your baby has been told they have low weight issues then spoon fed is better as they will eat more and keep their weight up. *Spoon fed* is cleaner, but means they can't feed themselves and you need to spend more time preparing #food. They also need to learn to swallow and chew at a later date anyway, so effectively they have to learn 2 different techniques. *Baby led* is easier to prepare, as they eat the same #food as you but tends to make more mess (using a shower curtain under the high chair is suggested). They also eat less to begin with, so there will be a lot of waste. When to start Signs that your baby is ready for #food:

can sit up straight

puts things in it's mouth

can swallow food

Babies can't digest #food well before 6 months, however it isn't unsafe to give them fruit and vegetables before this. Just no benefit and they may lose weight if they reduce their milk intake. How to feed Their main intake must continue to be milk. This slowly reduces over the coming months (e.g by removing a milk feed). Always feed them milk first. Wait 30 mins before trying a little bit of #food. They won't eat much to begin with. They may take 3 or 4 spoonfuls one day but only 1 the next. Don't obsess about quantities. DON'T constantly say things about the food while they're eating. We wouldn't like it if people said 'have some more', 'do you like that' etc to us. It's best to start with breakfast for a week or so. If they have a reaction to something, it's early enough in the day to get to a doctor. If breakfast is successful, start giving them lunch too for a week or so. If that's successful then add an evening meal. Babies can also snack during the day. Don't give babies sippy cups with a non-spill spout as it requires too much sucking to extract any liquid. After 6 months it is only necessary to sterilise milk bottles and teats. Nothing else needs to be sterilised. Suitable #food Nothing but fruit and veg before 6 months. Can introduce meat and dairy after 6 months. Give full fat milk, yogurts, cheese NOT diet or low fat foods. Use the same rules as pregnancy. E.g. no runny eggs, unpasteurised cheeses, shellfish, pate etc. Don't feed them honey or too much salt. It's also best to avoid nuts if immediate family members have asthma, eczema or hay fever. Make your own meals using herbs and spices, but omit the salt. You can then eat the same food as your baby. Suggestion is to cook your evening meal but if it's too late for them to eat it, they can have it reheated the following day. Many baby foods are sweet and contain a lot of sugar, so beware (rusks contain the same amount as chocolate digestives). Babies are much more likely to enjoy sweet foods, so don't give them apple puree every day just because they like it , as it may prevent them trying other foods. Babies may need to try something 10 times before they like it. Toddlers need 15-20 times. It's best to give water or water mixed with 10% juice, than pure fruit juice, in order to protect their teeth from the fruit sugar. By 6 months, babies that aren't on formula require vitamins A, C and D. These can be bought as drops, but are quite strong tasting so recommend mixing them in 500ml milk. If a baby is having trouble going to the toilet now they are eating solids, give them more water Choking Babies often gag when they are eating as they have to learn how to move food down their throat. They have a reflex that pushes foreign objects out of their mouth, which is why they often reject bottles. Choking is when a baby can't cry, breathe or cough. If they are choking (there's a YouTube link in the email below that shows this):

Check their mouth

Put them along your thigh, face down

Tap firmly between their shoulder blades 5 times with the heel of your hand

If that doesn't work turn them over so they are face up

Use 2 fingers and thrust their chest 5 times

It's less of a choke hazard to remove a bite out of a whole apple, then give them the remainder, than giving the chunks. Suggestion of going on a baby first aid course Conclusion My baby isn't yet 6 months old so I haven't started weaning yet. I expect I'll use a combination of spoon-fed and baby-led weaning. I'm quite excited at the prospect but also quite nervous, so I would be welcome any advice. |

"body": "These are the notes I made from a recent weaning course I attended:\n\nSpoon fed vs baby led weaning (e.g. puree vs whole #food)\nThere are pros and cons with both, but if your baby has been told they have low weight issues then spoon fed is better as they will eat more and keep their weight up.\n\n*Spoon fed* is cleaner, but means they can't feed themselves and you need to spend more time preparing #food. They also need to learn to swallow and chew at a later date anyway, so effectively they have to learn 2 different techniques.\n\n*Baby led* is easier to prepare, as they eat the same #food as you but tends to make more mess (using a shower curtain under the high chair is suggested). They also eat less to begin with, so there will be a lot of waste.\n\n\nWhen to start\nSigns that your baby is ready for #food:\n
\n
can sit up straight
\n
puts things in it's mouth
\n
can swallow food
\n
\n\nBabies can't digest #food well before 6 months, however it isn't unsafe to give them fruit and vegetables before this. Just no benefit and they may lose weight if they reduce their milk intake.\n\n\nHow to feed\nTheir main intake must continue to be milk. This slowly reduces over the coming months (e.g by removing a milk feed). \n\nAlways feed them milk first. Wait 30 mins before trying a little bit of #food. They won't eat much to begin with. They may take 3 or 4 spoonfuls one day but only 1 the next. Don't obsess about quantities.\n\nDON'T constantly say things about the food while they're eating. We wouldn't like it if people said 'have some more', 'do you like that' etc to us.\n\nIt's best to start with breakfast for a week or so. If they have a reaction to something, it's early enough in the day to get to a doctor.\n\nIf breakfast is successful, start giving them lunch too for a week or so. If that's successful then add an evening meal.\n\nBabies can also snack during the day.\n\nDon't give babies sippy cups with a non-spill spout as it requires too much sucking to extract any liquid.\n\nAfter 6 months it is only necessary to sterilise milk bottles and teats. Nothing else needs to be sterilised.\n\nSuitable #food\nNothing but fruit and veg before 6 months.\n\nCan introduce meat and dairy after 6 months. Give full fat milk, yogurts, cheese NOT diet or low fat foods.\n\nUse the same rules as pregnancy. E.g. no runny eggs, unpasteurised cheeses, shellfish, pate etc.\n\nDon't feed them honey or too much salt. It's also best to avoid nuts if immediate family members have asthma, eczema or hay fever.\n\nMake your own meals using herbs and spices, but omit the salt. | body | Why didn't I decide to have a baby earlier? #Maternity leave is AWESOME! However, it hasn't been exactly what I'd imagined. Yes, I knew that becoming a mother would be #life changing and all that, blah blah blah but in the four months that I've been off work, a surprising number of things have remained the same. The things I expected to gain from being away from the office were: 1. No more getting up early. I'd be able to have a lie in, due to being awoken by a little munchkin in the night. 2. No more filling 8 hours with mundane crap. I'd be able to hang out with my other mother mates. 3. No more spending lunch surrounded by the stench of shit (my office was located near to a water treatment centre, so depending on the direction of the wind...). 4. No more eating hideous canteen food or lugging supplies back from Tesco. I could cook at home or go to nice cafes. 5. No more commuter hell, as I could choose when to travel and whichever method of transport I deemed most suitable. 6. No more sitting inside on a sunny day. TAN 7. No more going to bed early on school nights (hmmm, not exactly sure I ever did that really, to be honest). In fact the only downside I could foresee would be missing my work mates. However, in reality a lot of the above issues remained: 1. My boyfriend is incapable of getting out of bed in the morning, without me showing him how it's done. 2. 8 hours of mundane crap? More like 12. OK, this is a bit unfair. Hanging out with my little homey is great fun, but housework isn't and I'm not used to doing so much of it. Dishes don't wash themselves, apparently. We might need to invest in this nifty gadget known as a dishwasher soon, although dishwashers don't load or unload themselves. Lazy sods! 3. Baby poo doesn't smell offensive. Is there something wrong with me? 4. Hideous canteen food is better than nothing at all. No, actually that's not true. Their food was REALLY bad. 5. I've exchanged train hell for the joy of tetris-packing the car for all eventualities. Plus it's time consuming to put the baby in the car seat, strap the carseat into the car. Then repeat in reverse. Multiple times. Obviously this can only occur when the baby is not too hungry, too tired, too hot, too cold or needing a nappy change to go out in the first place. 6. Babies can't go in the sun and seem to hate summer weather. Even dreary summers in England. They also hate their mums enjoying the sun. 7. Early nights are now amazing. So what do I love about maternity leave? Well four months in and it seems to be going well. I've got different groups of friends that I can see on different days. Some have babies the same age, so we are learning together. Caring for our little ones has shown me how patient I can be and it's a real sense of achievement when things are going to plan. However small those things are. What things?
Well, getting somewhere on time is a biggie. I'm doing pretty well at that at the moment. Go me!

Remembering to take the right stuff out with me, even though I can't remember things like my PIN code and have to use sign language when I forget names of things around the house. It's a real skill. I should put that on my CV.

Feeding myself. Getting to have lunch at all isn't guaranteed.

Staying awake. ALL DAY.

Keeping a smile on my face when I'm given 'suggestions' by experts. Well, not experts. People wanting to tell me what they did when raising their children.... 30 years ago.

Breastfeeding. Aaaah so worth it.

Expressing milk. Yes, I went there. Getting a good stash is sooooo pleasing. However, not getting a good stash can feel like the end of the world. I blame the post man interupting me.

Getting the baby to sleep without drama makes me feel like i'm finally 'getting it'.

Taking the perfect photo. You know the ones, where the baby is looking straight at camera and their arms and legs aren't a blur.

Staying calm.

Baking the occasional cake... and getting to eat it.
So, #maternity leave has been amazing so far. I'm learning a lot of new skills and really appreciating the little things. People say that this time goes so fast and to enjoy every minute. They're spot on with that advice! On top of celebrating every milestone I get to spend my days with my little one, who is happy and healthy and a joy to be around. I love my new #life so much. I'm just wondering how I'll cope when I have to return to work. |
