Las aves, los animales terrestres y los del mar, vivían despreocupados y felices. Por suerte, el mundo era muy amplio y podían permitirse el lujo de jugar y construir sus hogares donde les apetecía. También había comida abundante que garantizaba la alimentación de las crías y la supervivencia de las diferentes especies. En cuanto a la convivencia, era fantástica: como había espacio de sobra y alimentos para todos, nadie se quejaba y todos se llevaban muy bien.\n\nPero un día, nadie sabe por qué razón, empezaron a discutir unos con otros y se montó una bronca tremenda. Surgieron peleas entre leones y gacelas, monos y cuervos, marmotas y osos polares… Al final, acabaron todos enfrentados y faltándose al respeto. Los altercados llegaron a ser de tal calibre que dejaron compartir la comida, evitaban encontrarse en lugares comunes, e incluso, muchos dejaron de dirigirse la palabra ¡Se cuenta que hasta hubo empujones y algún que otro tirón de pelos!  La situación se volvió insostenible.\n\nEl tiempo fue pasando y todos los animales se sentían muy incómodos y tristes. En el fondo de su corazón, pensaban que no era lógico vivir enfadados. Para que la paz reinara de nuevo, comenzaron a organizar reuniones donde todos, desde los grandes elefantes a las frágiles hormiguitas, fueron aportando ideas para solucionar los conflictos. Poco a poco, a base de conversaciones, acuerdos y buenas maneras, las disputas terminaron y por fin la armonía regresó a la Tierra ¡Había llegado la hora de que todos los animales se reconciliaran y volvieran  a ser amigos!\n\nBueno… En realidad, no todos se esforzaron por arreglar las diferencias, porque en Australia, un animal muy altivo y orgulloso, seguía en pie de guerra. Se trataba de un emú, ave parecida al avestruz, que se consideraba muy superior a los demás. Casi nunca sonreía ni solía hablar con nadie, pero un día se encontró con un tranquilo koala y la tomó con él. Se plantó a su lado y empezó a decirle lo que pensaba.\n\n– Parece que ahora todos los animales vuelven a llevarse bien, pero creo que es necesario que alguien tome las riendas para que no vuelva a haber problemas. Tiene que haber líderes que manden sobre el resto de la fauna y ¿sabes qué? … ¡Creo que somos las aves quienes deberíamos ostentar ese poder!\n\nEl koala abrió los ojillos y sin mucho interés, le preguntó:\n\n– ¿Ah, sí?… ¿Y eso por qué?\n\nEl emú se pavoneó delante de él creyéndose más que nadie.\n\n– A mi entender, las aves somos rápidas, inteligentes, expertas cazadoras y además, sabemos volar ¿Quién puede superar eso?\n\nEl koala, que era un ser más bien lento y con pocos reflejos, tardó en contestar.\n\n– En cuanto a que sois muy completas, no te falta razón, pero opino que…\n\nEl emú dejó al pobre koala con la palabra en la boca y continuó con su perorata.\n\n– ¡Calla, calla, eso no es todo! Te habrás fijado que, de todas las aves, los emús somos de las más grandes, así que nuestra superioridad está bien clara sobre las águilas, que siempre van presumiendo de que son las reinas ¡El mando nos corresponde a nosotros! ¡Los emús debemos gobernar el mundo!\n\nEl koala nunca había visto un animal tan vanidoso e impertinente. Iba a pararle los pies cuando, de repente, ante sus ojos sucedió algo insólito: el emú estaba tan lleno de orgullo que comenzó a inflarse de forma descontrolada hasta convertirse en un ave enorme y patosa que no sabía cómo manejar su propio cuerpo. De hecho, intentó volar cogiendo carrerilla, levantando las patas y tensando el cuello, pero fue imposible ¡Se había vuelto tan grande y pesado que sus alitas no consiguieron levantarle un palmo del suelo! De un plumazo, toda su agilidad desapareció y su aspecto era el de un animal desproporcionado que se movía como un pato mareado.\n\nA cientos de metros a la redonda se le escuchó llorar y a gritar, espantado por su nueva apariencia, pero no sirvió de nada: jamás volvió a su tamaño original. El koala, asustado, trepó por un eucalipto y decidió no moverse de allí nunca más.\n\nDesde entonces, como cuenta esta leyenda, los emús sueñan con volar pero siempre fracasan en el intento; en cuanto a los koalas, se han adaptado a la tranquila vida en las copas de los árboles,  y prefieren observar a los emús desde lo alto para que no les den la tabarra.",
