      "body": "Tomorrow I am teaching my first art workshop in almost 10 years. Each time I teach a workshop I hand out Irwin Greenberg's Practical Primer.  Irwin Greenberg or \"Greeny\" as all of his students called him, circulated this primer to his students at the High School of Art & Design and the Art Students League of New York .  \n\nTo me legacy as an artist is not just my work but also what I can pass on to other artists. Having Greeny as a teacher was a gift and I hope to share this with you. Sometimes we are hardest on ourselves....be good to yourself. Paint every day.\n\n2. Paint until you feel physical strain. Take a break and then paint some more.\n\n3. Suggest.\n\n4. When at an impasse, look at the work of masters.\n\n5. Buy the best materials you can afford.\n\n6. Let your enthusiasm show.\n\n7. Find a way to support yourself.\n\n8. Be your own toughest critic.\n\n9. Develop a sense of humor about yourself.\n\n10. Develop the habit of work. Start early every day. When you take a break, don’t eat. Instead, drink a glass of water.\n\n11. Don’t settle for yourself at a mediocre level.\n\n12. Don’t allow yourself to be crushed by failure. Rembrandt had failures. Success grows from failure.\n\n13. Be a brother (or sister) to all struggling artists.\n\n14. Keep it simple.\n\n15. Know your art equipment and take care of it.\n\n16. Have a set of materials ready wherever you go.\n\n17. Always be on time for work, class, and appointments.\n\n18. Meet deadlines. Be better than your word.\n\n19. Find a mate who is really a mate.\n\n20. Don’t be envious of anyone who is more talented than you. Be the best you can be.\n\n21. Prizes are nice, but the real competition is with yesterday’s performance.\n\n22. Give yourself room to fail and fight like hell to achieve.\n\n23. Go to sleep thinking about what you’re going to do first thing tomorrow.\n\n24. Analyze the work of great painters. Study how they emphasize and subordinate.\n\n25. Find out the fewest material things you need to live.\n\n26. Remember: Michelangelo was once a helpless baby. Great works are the result of heroic struggle.\n\n27. There are no worthwhile tricks in art; find the answer.\n\n28. Throw yourself into each painting heart and soul.\n\n29. Commit yourself to a life in art.\n\n30. No struggle, no progress.\n\n31. Do rather than don’t.\n\n32. Don’t say “I haven’t the time.” You have as much time everyday as the great masters.\n\n33. Read. Be conversant with the great ideas.\n\n34. No matter what you do for a living, nurture your art.\n\n35. Ask. Be hungry to learn.\n\n36. You are always the student in a one-person art school. You are also the teacher of that class.\n\n37. Find the artists who are on your wavelength and constantly increase that list.\n\n38. Take pride in your work.\n\n39. Take pride in yourself.\n\n40. No one is a better authority on your feelings than you are.\n\n41. When painting, always keep in mind what your picture is about.\n\n42. Be organized.\n\n43. When you’re in trouble, study the lives of those who’ve done great things.\n\n44. “Poor me” is no help at all.\n\n45. Look for what you can learn from the great painters, not what’s wrong with them.\n\n46. Look. Really look.\n\n47. Overcome errors in observing by exaggerating the opposite.\n\n48. Critics are painters who flunked out.\n\n49. Stay away from put-down artists.\n\n50. If you’re at a loss for what to do next, do a self-portrait.\n\n51. Never say “I can’t.” It closes the door to potential development.\n\n52. Be ingenious. Howard Pyle got his start in illustration by illustrating his own stories.\n\n53. All doors open to a hard push.\n\n54. If art is hard, it’s because you’re struggling to go beyond what you know you can do.\n\n55. Draw everywhere and all the time. An artist is a sketchbook with a person attached.\n\n56. There is art in any endeavor done well.\n\n57. If you’ve been able to put a personal response into your work, others will feel it and they will be your audience.\n\n58. Money is O.K., but it isn’t what life is about.\n\n59. Spend less than you earn.\n\n60. Be modest; be self-critical, but aim for the highest.\n\n61. Don’t hoard your knowledge, share it.\n\n62. Try things against your grain to find out just what your grain really is.\n\n63. Inspiration doesn’t come when you are idle. It comes when you have steeped yourself in work.\n\n64. Habit is more powerful than will. If you get in the habit of painting every day, nothing will keep you from painting.\n\n65. There are three ways to learn art: Study life, people, and nature. Study the great painters. Paint.\n\n66. Remember, Rembrandt wasn’t perfect. He had to fight mediocrity.\n\n67. Don’t call yourself an artist. Let others name you that. “Artist” is a title of great weight.\n\n68. Be humble; learn from everybody.\n\n69. Paintings that you work hardest at are the ones you learn the most from, and are often your favorites.\n\n70. Read values relatively. Find the lightest light and compare all other light values to it. Do the same with the darks.\n\n71. Grit and guts are the magic ingredients to your success.\n\n72. Let your picture welcome the viewer.\n\n73. Add new painters to your list of favorites all the time.\n\n74. Study artists who are dealing with the same problems that you’re trying to solve.\n\n75. Have a positive mindset when showing your work to galleries.\n\n76. Don’t look for gimmicks to give your work style. You might be stuck with them for life. Or, worse yet, you might have to change your “style” every few years.\n\n77. If what you have to say is from your deepest feelings, you’ll find an audience that responds.\n\n78. Try to end a day’s work on a picture knowing how to proceed the next day.\n\n79. Don’t envy others’ success. Be generous-spirited and congratulate whole-heartedly.\n\n80. Your own standards have to be higher and more scrupulous than those of critics.\n\n81. Howard Pyle said, “Throw your heart into a picture and jump in after it.”\n\n82. Vermeer found a life’s work in the corner of a room.\n\n83. Rembrandt was always clear about what is most important in a picture.\n\n84. If, after study, the work of an artist remains obscure, the fault may not be yours.\n\n85. Critics don’t matter. Who cares about Michelangelo’s critics?\n\n86. Structure your day so you have time for painting, reading, exercising and resting.\n\n87. Aim high, beyond your capacity.\n\n88. Try not to finish too fast.\n\n89. Take the theory of the “last inch” that holds as you approach the end of a painting, you must gather all your resources for the finish.\n\n90. Build your painting solidly, working from big planes to small.\n\n91. See the planes of light as shapes, the planes of shadows as shapes. Squint your eyes and find the big, fluent shapes.\n\n92. Notice how, in a portrait, Rembrandt reduces the modeling of clothes to the essentials, emphasizing the head and the hands.\n\n93. For all his artistic skill, what’s most important about Rembrandt is his deep compassion.\n\n94. To emphasize something means that the other parts of a picture must be muted.\n\n95. When painting outdoors, sit on your hands and look before starting.\n\n96. When composing a picture, do many thumbnails, rejecting the obvious ones.\n\n97. Study how Rembrandt creates flow of tone.\n\n98. If you teach, teach the individual. Find out when he or she is having trouble and help at that point.\n\n99. Painting is a practical art, using real materials—paints, brushes, canvas, and paper. Part of the practicality of it is earning a living in art.\n\n100. Finally, don’t be an art snob. Most painters I know teach, do illustrations, or work in an art-related field. Survival is the game.",

I tried doing other things in tech to try and make more money, nothing ever came out of it, mostly because of lack of passion for the work. Going back to something you love is worth it, a second chance I deserve.  This is an inspiration from the movie Chef starring Jon Favreau and for anyone who is not following the dreams...go do you. Here is what I learned:** \n\n**1- Don’t get comfortable -** At the beginning of the movie, Chef spends 10 years cooking for someone else, eventually becoming too comfortable to care. But deep down inside he his angry and resentful because he is not living his dream. \n\n**2- Don’t just play the old hits, be true to your creative self. Experiment, play and create your vision, not someone else’s.-** Chef was asked by his boss to cook the same old bland classics for a food blogger who comes to review the restaurant. He eventually gets a bad review because he wasn’t true to his own creative heart. When he cooks for himself and his friends you see the best of his work come out.\n\n**3- Have a supportive spouse or significant other who believes in you even when you don’t believe in yourself -** Even when Chef is down and doesn’t believe in himself, his ex-wife comes to the rescue and helps push him forward in following his dreams. \n\n**4- Go back to basics and find your passion again -** After being fired and not knowing what to do next, Chef goes to Miami to visit where he started and clears his head. \n\n**5- Find a wingman who’s got your back -**  After chef is fired his old lineworker flies down to be by his side and goes along on the journey to be the best number 2 around. \n\n**6- Your trending bro. Don’t plan your social media.** Be organic and show your authentic self and your work, people will respond. As Gary Vaynerchuk says *\"Document don't create\".*\n\n**7- Hands-on projects with others can build stronger lifelong relationships -** Chef is given the gift of an old food truck, which becomes the blank canvas of his dreams. With his son helping, he pulls it apart, cleans it, buys the best equipment and builds the truck back-up as he builds himself back-up and his relationship with his son. \n\n**8- You don’t need to be original, just great -** Throughout the film we see chef cook other people’s crap and his own creations. He really doesn’t find his niche until he visits Little Cuba in Miami and gets inspired by some classic Cuban cuisine. This becomes the main focus of his food truck and while it is not his original creations, he believes in quality and cooks the hell out of it. \n\n**9- Don’t worry about reviews and haters, learn from them and do you -** In the beginning we see how worried Chef is about a food bloggers ego killing critique. He eventually goes on the defense puts the critic in his place and proves him wrong.\n\n**10- Have an intense amount of pride in your profession no matter how small your audience is; play as if the whole world is watching -** Chef gave away some free food to some workers for helping him. While showing his son the ropes of how to cook a mean Cuban sandwich. His son burns a sandwich and wants to serve it anyway because they didn’t pay. This doesn’t sit right with Chef because everyone individual deserves quality food served from his kitchen. \n\n**11. Include family in your dreams and the passion of the work you love. -** Throughout the movie, his son wants to know more and to be part of his work life. Chef tries to separate family and work thinking his son would be a distraction. Eventually, he opens up and lets his son in. This becomes my favorite part of the movie because his son becomes a bigger part of his life and Chef realizes that he can pass on his passion, work ethic & pride to his son. He also is surprised that he also has a lot to learn from his son as well.",
