      "body": "I used to sail with my father as a kid/teen. He started windsurfing, then built a 16' wooden catamaran (Wharram design) rigged with a windsurfer sail on a rubber universal which would allow simple raising/lowering by unclipping a side-stay and manually lowering the sail to the side. This was necessary to pass under bridges in the area. I have some great memories of exploring the local river on that boat. My journey began with a hope of imparting similar experiences to my children.\n\nSince leaving home for university at 18 I have always had it in the back of my head that I would definitely like to sail again or at very least get a small boat to get out on the water.  What really got me going was returning to my childhood home two years ago. I purchased the house from my mother who had maintained the large house by her self for almost 10 years and it was starting to get the best of her. The house is located on the bank of a shallow inlet off a mid-sized river popular with pleasure boaters. Because of the shallow water of the inlet I knew my options were limited to small boats or a catamaran. I initially wanted to build a catamaran as my father had done. I had helped in that effort and knew it would be hard work and not exactly cheap but I was excited about the idea. Eventually however, the draw of purchasing a boat ready to sail NOW was far more appealing. I then turned my attention to the area of trailer sailors. I looked at a few catalina 22's a,  Matilda and Venture 22. All of these boats were quite nice but very small for my family of 8. Also the issue of a 500lb iron keel to deal with was a bit intimidating. During this phase I began to be intrigued by the MacGregor boats ; not the newer power-sailors  which are widely ridiculed as neither good sailboats nor good powerboats but the ones from the 80's and 90's which were indeed quite good little sailboats. The key is the water-ballast which allows for the shallow draft. My model which has a light swing keel is very forgiving when accidentally venturing into shallow waters. The swing keel simply pivots as it drags on the bottom and the rudder which I have rigged to a break-away cleat does the same after tripping the cleat which releases the down-haul.\n\nI finally saw an add for a MacGregor 26 which could sleep 6 adults and required only 12-14\" draft. It was a bit more expensive then I had originally planned for and I had to borrow money but I pounced on it. It's a bit of fixer-upper with not much in the way of camping amenities but we've been working on that. I thoroughly enjoy working on improving the boat and have gotten quite a few miles in this summer.",

      "body": "Yeah I love the shallow (shoal) water capability. A must for my area. When I arrived in PEI I had to find a safe anchorage and found a nice little island with a nice cove on the lee side with about 2' of water. Would not have been possible with most other boats.",

      "body": "Last week I sailed my little (26') MacGregor sailboat across the Northumberland Strait and back solo. Total one way distance approximately 70 nautical miles. Not a major journey by any stretch but far outside of my experience of sailing in the river where I live in Rexton, NB.\n\nIt was a blast. Half the fun was the preparation. This included getting certified with a pleasure craft operator card (a legal requirement in Canada) licensing my boat and getting all the required safety equipment like flares and heaving lines etc. Additionally, I purchased a couple of nautical charts covering the area I would be sailing through and also prompted me to learn the basics of nautical navigation which was a very rewarding exercise and an area of knowledge I hope to delve deeper into in the near future.\n\nAlthough I had a rudimentary knowledge of navigation and a GPS unit on board, I made a rather large mistake early on. This was to use a navigation app on my phone and assumed the course I read from the app was a magnetic one. It was, rather, a \"true\" bearing which differs from magnetic by 23 degrees in my part of the world which caused some confusion and made for longer crossing than I intended.\n\nThe journey was not too harrowing but it took some getting used to the moderate swell and some attention to avoid all the lobster buoys which seemed to be everywhere as lobster season was in full swing in both South-Eastern New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island so there were fishing boats from both sides of the strait. \n\nI uploaded a bunch of videos detailing the trip to youtube I hope those with an interest in sailing will find them interesting. There is quite alot of footage here and although I have timelapsed most of them, I didn't edit out any of the boring parts so some of these are a bit repetitive.
