| title | The Ugly Truth Behind Steemit |
| body | You post content, people decide if they like it or not and depending on how ‘popular’ it is, you get paid. Being able to monetize your content is great and it’s about time that we have a way to do it. However, when it comes to Steemit, appearance is deceiving. Through a new account called ‘thereverseflash’, STEEM was launched on March 24, 2016 under the premise of Proof-of-Work, No ICO, No Premine. At launch there were no compiled wallets and an error in the setup instructions which allowed only the developer to initially mine any STEEM. When users asked for assistance, none was given. Later on, user ‘Eclipse Crypto’ discovered that the instructions given by the developer were incorrect, accounting for the errors everyone else was experiencing that was preventing them from being able to mine. Once other users were able to join in on mining, the developer was confronted with another problem. Overnight, an error on the developer’s end resulted in all his miners crashing (for the second time). Other users continued mining STEEM during this time. The developer, upon realizing that he had lost some control of the supply, decided to re-launch STEEM to ensure that he alone had majority of supply (at least 75%+ of supply). As you can see the developer did everything possible to ensure almost complete centralization. STEEM is not decentralized. From the beginning it was and still remains highly centralized. The launch of the STEEM network was heavily rigged to ensure that the developer and his ‘friends’ had control over majority of supply. Furthermore, this has major implications for the Steemit platform. The top 247 accounts on Steemit (most of which are probably owned by the developer and his ‘friends’ through duplicate accounts) own ~87.50% of total stake, without including the main steemit account which is also controlled by the dev. Although any user can vote for content, the influence of your vote corresponds to the amount of STEEM you convert on your account. This means the typical user’s vote is almost meaningless unless they manage to acquire a high stake in total supply. All content on Steemit is highly censored and centralized since the few actual users who own majority of the supply get to decide which posts make it to the front page and which posts get higher payouts. Accounts are easy to create and majority of the top accounts are most likely controlled by a small group of people making Steemit highly susceptible to sybil attacks. Simply put, for any content to make it to the front page, it is subject to the approval of the developer and his ‘friends’… Are you an influential or well-known public figure? The developer and his ‘friends’ will give you a nice ‘payout’ so you feel good and start promoting their shady platform to the public. The number of people being lured in through this method is alarming and disappointing. Post something that the majority stakeholders don’t like and your post will never see the light of day despite being well-received by many users. Reddit operates using an up-vote and down-vote system and every individual user can up-vote or down-vote content once. If a post gets enough up-votes, it can reach the front page. Now imagine if each vote from the Reddit staff counted as 5000 votes. This is what is basically happening on Steemit. Steemit is basically a version of Reddit that is almost completely controlled and censored by the creator and his ‘friends’. The content on Steemit and value of STEEM is also at their complete mercy. Unlike decentralized networks, Steemit is almost completely dependent on the developer and his ‘friends’. Simplified overview of STEEM and Steemit. Rig the distribution process so that you end up with almost all of the STEEM supply. Create a platform that allows for the monetization of content. Make sure certain users get extravagant payouts to lure in more users (the payout is a tiny fraction when compared to how much STEEM you and your friends own). As more people are lured in, STEEM becomes more ‘valuable’, resulting in those who own majority of the supply getting rich along with the select few they choose. The successful creation of a content monetization platform does not require the developer to create his own ‘token’ or economy but Steemit chose to do so anyways through the use of highly questionable methods. Yours Network (soon to be released) is an example of a content monetizing platform that is designed to monetize user content without the questionable ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme for its creator and does not depend so heavily on its developer and his ‘’friends’. You can follow progress on Yours through the Yours Network twitter account. There are various other flaws and red flags present when looking at the economic model behind STEEM and Steemit which will be discussed by Tone through a comprehensive analysis of it’s whitepaper. |

| title | How Digital Currency Will Change The World |
| body | Digital currency may be the most effective way the world has ever seen to increase economic freedom. If this happens, the implications are profound. It could lift many countries out of poverty, improve the lives of billions of people, and accelerate the pace of innovation in the world. This is why I co-founded a digital currency company. I believe it is the highest leverage activity I can be doing right now to improve the world. In this post, I’ll attempt to explain what economic freedom is, why it is important, and how digital currency can change it. What is economic freedom? Economic freedom is a measure of how easy it is for members of a society to participate in the economy. It has a number of factors, such as: How easy it is to start a business Whether property rights are enforced (can you keep what belongs to you) Free trade with other nations Regulation of labor and business Stability of the currency etc Several organizations exist that score and rank the countries of the world by how economically free they are. The data shown below is published by the Heritage Foundation and Wall Street Journal. Here are the top and bottom ranking countries from their 2016 list. By looking at the names on the two lists you can start to get a sense of why economic freedom may be important, but here is another way to look at it. Why is economic freedom important? Economic freedom correlates with a number of positive outcomes in society. Some you might expect, like higher per-capita income, life expectancy, and literacy. But economic freedom also correlates with some things you may not expect, like: Better income for the poorest 10% Improved environmental protection Fewer wars and violent conflicts Higher self-reported happiness of citizens Less corruption and bribery The red bars show nations with less economic freedom, the green bars those with more. When I first read this I was surprised more people didn’t know about it. Correlation, of course, does not prove causation, so we must be careful not to jump to too many conclusions. Societies are very complex, and what works in one place may not necessarily work in another. Still, it raises an important question: if the world had more economic freedom would we all be better off? Digital currency’s impact on economic freedom In the past, if you wanted to change economic freedom you had to run for office or lobby the government. If you spent one year in every country of the world working toward this, it would take you 196 years (and you probably wouldn’t move the needle much spending one year per country). But with the proliferation of smartphones, there is now a way to rapidly bring digital currency into almost every country in the world. This is how digital currency enables economic freedom: It makes it easier to start a business Anyone with an idea can have customers around the world in just a few hours. It reduces the friction of accepting payments, and helps companies expand globally. It enforces property rights Many people today are unable to safely store wealth without it being stolen or confiscated. Digital currency will allow anyone to be in control of their own money (see brain wallets). In this sense, digital currency will “bank” the unbanked of the world. It promotes free trade and globalization Digital currency excels at cross border transfers. It breaks down barriers for people in different countries to trade with each other (for example to get a loan, or hire someone to complete a job). It enables freedom of contract With Ethereum smart contracts, the hurdle has been lowered for people to enter agreements, regardless of where they live or whether they can afford a lawyer. It encourages people to leave low scoring countries People will find it easier to emigrate if they can take their wealth with them and use it in a neighboring country. Digital currency makes every country’s economy interoperable. With lower switching costs, countries will improve. It reduces corruption and bribery With fewer gatekeepers and intermediaries to start a business, there won’t be as many places to apply pressure or curry favor. It provides access to stable currency Digital currencies are more volatile than the dollar or euro today, but their volatility has decreased every year (and are now approaching the levels of some fiat currencies). In the coming years, digital currency will be more stable than many of the 180+ fiat currencies in the world. Today, digital currency is still in early stages. But as with many technologies, when it tips the result can be dramatic. Digital currency has a number of applications emerging today (prediction markets, micro-payments, smart contracts, remittance, games, etc). But I think digital currency could “tip” in at least one developing country by 2020, where it accounts for the majority of transactions in that economy. From there it could spread rapidly. Conclusion Over the past 20 years, the global average economic freedom has gone up by only 3 points (from 57% to about 60%). Things are moving in the right direction, but far too slowly. .png) With the invention of digital currency, I believe we can dramatically increase the economic freedom of the world, perhaps raising it as high as 75% in the next 10 years. Economic freedom is one of the great meta-problems of our time (right up there with A.I., quantum computing, and cheap renewable energy). If we can create more economic freedom in the world, it will serve as a giant economic stimulus package for the world, accelerate innovation, reduce wars, make the poorest 10% better off, overthrow corrupt governments, and raise happiness. For the first time in history, just a couple hundred people can have a material impact on the economic freedom of the world by making a new technology accessible to the masses. If this mission is of interest to you, please get in touch with us. Thank you to Rose Broome, D. Scott Phoenix, John Yi, Erin Coppin, Adam White, Dave Farmer, Dan Romero, Fred Ehrsam, and Nathalie McGrath for reviewing drafts of this post. Footnotes A meta-problem is a problem where if you solve it, you automatically solve an entire class of problems. The U.S. has fallen from 7th place in 2008 to 11th place in 2016, primarily due to increased government spending after the 2008 financial crisis. For more on this topic, see our mission and vision. A better measure of global economic freedom might be the score of each country multiplied by the size of its population. With this measure, it would be possible to raise global economic freedom when people emigrate to higher scoring countries, even if their home country does not improve. |

"title": "How Digital Currency Will Change The World",
"body": "Digital currency may be the most effective way the world has ever seen to increase economic freedom. If this happens, the implications are profound. It could lift many countries out of poverty, improve the lives of billions of people, and accelerate the pace of innovation in the world.\nThis is why I co-founded a digital currency company. I believe it is the highest leverage activity I can be doing right now to improve the world.\nIn this post, I’ll attempt to explain what economic freedom is, why it is important, and how digital currency can change it.\nWhat is economic freedom?\nEconomic freedom is a measure of how easy it is for members of a society to participate in the economy. It has a number of factors, such as:\nHow easy it is to start a business\nWhether property rights are enforced (can you keep what belongs to you)\nFree trade with other nations\nRegulation of labor and business\nStability of the currency\netc\nSeveral organizations exist that score and rank the countries of the world by how economically free they are. The data shown below is published by the Heritage Foundation and Wall Street Journal. Here are the top and bottom ranking countries from their 2016 list.\n\n\nBy looking at the names on the two lists you can start to get a sense of why economic freedom may be important, but here is another way to look at it.\n\n\nWhy is economic freedom important?\nEconomic freedom correlates with a number of positive outcomes in society.\nSome you might expect, like higher per-capita income, life expectancy, and literacy. But economic freedom also correlates with some things you may not expect, like:\nBetter income for the poorest 10%\nImproved environmental protection\nFewer wars and violent conflicts\nHigher self-reported happiness of citizens\nLess corruption and bribery\nThe red bars show nations with less economic freedom, the green bars those with more.\n\n\n\n\nWhen I first read this I was surprised more people didn’t know about it.\nCorrelation, of course, does not prove causation, so we must be careful not to jump to too many conclusions. Societies are very complex, and what works in one place may not necessarily work in another. Still, it raises an important question: if the world had more economic freedom would we all be better off?\nDigital currency’s impact on economic freedom\nIn the past, if you wanted to change economic freedom you had to run for office or lobby the government. If you spent one year in every country of the world working toward this, it would take you 196 years (and you probably wouldn’t move the needle much spending one year per country).\nBut with the proliferation of smartphones, there is now a way to rapidly bring digital currency into almost every country in the world.\n\n\n\nThis is how digital currency enables economic freedom:\nIt makes it easier to start a business\nAnyone with an idea can have customers around the world in just a few hours. It reduces the friction of accepting payments, and helps companies expand globally.\nIt enforces property rights\nMany people today are unable to safely store wealth without it being stolen or confiscated. Digital currency will allow anyone to be in control of their own money (see brain wallets). In this sense, digital currency will “bank” the unbanked of the world.\nIt promotes free trade and globalization\nDigital currency excels at cross border transfers. It breaks down barriers for people in different countries to trade with each other (for example to get a loan, or hire someone to complete a job).\nIt enables freedom of contract\nWith Ethereum smart contracts, the hurdle has been lowered for people to enter agreements, regardless of where they live or whether they can afford a lawyer.\nIt encourages people to leave low scoring countries\nPeople will find it easier to emigrate if they can take their wealth with them and use it in a neighboring country. Digital currency makes every country’s economy interoperable. With lower switching costs, countries will improve.\nIt reduces corruption and bribery\nWith fewer gatekeepers and intermediaries to start a business, there won’t be as many places to apply pressure or curry favor.\nIt provides access to stable currency\nDigital currencies are more volatile than the dollar or euro today, but their volatility has decreased every year (and are now approaching the levels of some fiat currencies). In the coming years, digital currency will be more stable than many of the 180+ fiat currencies in the world.\nToday, digital currency is still in early stages. | title | Announcing Ethereum & Litecoin vaults |
| body | Today, we’re excited to launch Ethereum and Litecoin vaults for all customers, bringing these assets in line with our current Bitcoin storage offerings. With vaults for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, customers get additional layers of withdrawal security for stored digital currency, such as a 48-hour withdrawal delay and required email approvals. A little more than 3 years ago, we launched Bitcoin vaults for Coinbase customers. Our goal was to help eliminate the false idea that Bitcoin owners had to choose between security or convenience when it came to storage. Coinbase vaults gave customers the best of both worlds by providing a standard account for easy access and a vault for long-term storage. We’re now bringing this product to Ethereum and Litecoin, continuing our mission to make Coinbase the easiest, most secure place to buy, sell, and hold digital currency. Visit coinbase.com/accounts and click “New Account” to set up a BTC, ETH, or LTC vault today. To learn more about the vaults product, visit coinbase.com/vault. |

| title | Can Americans See Each Other Again? |
| body | The Rage and the Light It’s difficult. Very difficult. To talk about America these days. Have you noticed? When I or anyone else says, “America is (this)”, or “Americans are (that)”, instantly there’s a kind of violent reaction. No! You’re generalizing! Americans aren’t this or that. And yet in that little rage something profound is said. Let me see if I can clumsily put it to words. What is a society, anyways? To me, a society is just a way of relating to one another. How do we do that today? You, like me, are a member of many social groups. Religious, social, demographic. It doesn’t really matter what they are. Here’s what’s really unique about America today: every single group bears some kind of grievance against the others. It’s striking when you think about it — it’s distinctly not true in most other developed countries. Whether it’s the much-hated alt-right, the fringe left, the poor, the rich, the middle, blacks, whites, minorities, Muslims, anyone, everyone — bears a grievance, a grudge, a complaint. We’ll get to their validity. What happens next? Well, usually one group says to the next, or the rest: “you are the bad people!”. What’s really happening here? Think about with me carefully. We are projecting our flaws outwards, aren’t we? Before we are members of various identity groups, presumably, we are members of a society together. If we are not, then why are complaining in such a way where society is the object of the discussion at all? Why not just campaign to secede? Write off society entirely? Now that isn’t to say that society hasn’t failed people. Nor that you shouldn’t talk about it. Of course it has, and you should. America is a failing society, and what is truest about it is that it has failed everyone. Yes, really. Everyone. It has failed old, young, black, white, poor, middle, even rich. You might think to yourself: “how the blazes has America failed the rich?” The simple fact is that a rich man isn’t made any happier by his billionth dollar — just more miserable, cruel, and foolish — and yet every incentive in America as it exists today is to make more billionaires, not, say, scientists, artists, philosophers, poets, or even just wise, gentle, humane people, so they can buy…what? If not happiness, then maybe the illusion of safety from all the above. Grievance, suffering, pain. But life isn’t that simple, is it? You can’t buy your way out of a failed society, really. You can only buy a fortress protecting you from it. But those are not nearly the same thing. This society, this way of relating to one another, has failed every last one of us. But what are we to do with that truth? Use it as a club to beat one another over the head with? Or something a little more positive, beautiful, useful, enduring? Now that isn’t to equivocate “levels” of failure. It isn’t to say that, for example, segregation and an opioid epidemic amongst poor whites carry perfectly equal morally weight, value, harm. Of course they don’t. But at the same time, this project of being a society take a truer kind of relating to one another than just performing a robotic mental calculus of pain, and saying “I’ve suffered the most! And they are the reason for it!”. After all, in all this, this game of projecting society’s flaws outwards, that’s all we are really doing, isn’t it? We reduce ourselves to something like little Ezra Kleins, moral accountants standing in judgment of one another, human calculators of virtue. But virtue is not really a calculable quantity. It is more a quality. And to me that is the real point. We are all wounded by this war against being us. Hurt, ashamed, broken, rejected, disappointed, disillusioned, exhausted, afraid. To constantly judge one another as bad, terrible, lacking, elides the truer truth that beneath the wrongdoer, vendetta, eruption, insult, attack is usually a scar, a wound, a trauma, a soul that got badly broken in some way. And so the question for those who wish to be a society is: can we care about one another in such a deeper way — as human beings, not just as “identities”, roles, players in a theater of a society? If we are only going to be adversaries, opposites, prizefighters, sides, judging one another’s moral sins, then of course we neither can nor will ever really be a society. So. You’ll maybe hate me for saying it, but this violent reaction I get when I say “Americans are (anything)” is precisely the point. Right now Americans aren’t anything together — only pure, violent negativity, the negation of being anything together. All we are really doing is hating, raging. But beneath hate and rage and the volcano is always grief, shame, hurt. Sorry: the hate of the alt-right is born from suffering, just as the rage of the fringe left is, just as the cold distance of the punditocracy is, just as the endless litany of my Twitter feed — “Trump is terrible!” — is. All of it. It’s one great ocean of suffering surging in different directions. Yes, Trump is terrible. He’s the world’s tackiest douchebag. But he’s not the point. We are. We are better than this. We say that a lot, don’t we? But what does it really mean? Anything? To me, it means something like: we deserve better than this. We deserve better than this constant, bruising way of negativity, of simply projecting at the next group our fears and anguish instead of trying even for a moment to see, discover, know, what we hold in common. For what we hold in common is always greater than what divides us, or we would not be here at all. I don’t mean that in an cheesy, fake founding fathers kind of way — “hey, we’re all in it together! Except you guys, you’re only 3/5ths of real people!”. I mean it existentially: beneath even the foolish idea (to me) of nations, first there is one human experience, one soul, made of the same raw stuff, pure essence, happiness, grace, truth, pain, tears, birth, death. And yet if all we are is human calculators of pain, if all that we can say to one another is “those are the worse people!”, then at the very moment we deny ourselves any good genuinely social at all. Only in what is held in common can lie the possibility to really create a vision for a badly, deeply broken society. Not just a broken me, or a broken you, but a broken all of us. And that is what is missing, isn’t it? Trump is the worst thing in my adult lifetime. If we’re reasonable people, we all agree on that. And yet, what we can’t agree on is what comes afterwards, what’s positive, what’s constructive, what’s helpful, graceful, noble, worthy, beautiful, just, true. Why not? Because we’re too busy caught up in this foolish game of being angry, hateful, enraged, oh so outraged, negative. Negativity has even become cool, hasn’t it? There’s nothing more uncool than “sincerity”, so all the comfortably afflicted writers in vogue at this and that magazine tell me: and yet insincerity is the luxury of the therapeutic classes, isn’t it? So it’s just the same old failure to relate to one another in any true way, isn’t it? The left hates the right, with endless snark and cynicism and mockery, and the right hates the left right back, and yet neither side really sees both are acting out exactly the same role, the only common ground left in this foolish game: it’s oh so cool to be smoldering, enraged, angry, a kind of badge of honour amongst the intellectual soldiers of this forever war for the American soul. But what is it good for, this anger, really? You know, deep down, that if anger becomes an end in itself, it is only like a storm. It passes, without creating anything. Anger is a means, maybe, sometimes — only when it helps to see one another with greater clarity and truth. But first our eyes must be open, and that is all anger can and should do: open our eyes, snap them wide awake. To the wonder and beauty and grace in every single human life. And right now, if you ask me, our eyes are shut tight, like a child afraid of the dark. And yet the darkness doesn’t go away just because you’ve closed your eyes. We are suffering. Every single one of us. Some more, some less, but suffering is not a currency, not a game, not an accountant’s ledger. There are no winners and no losers, no kings and no beggars, in suffering — only those who can treat suffering with insincerity have the luxury of pretending so. Suffering is tears and sweat and hurt. Therefore every single one of us deserves better than this. A genuine vision for a society is about all of it, not some of it. The age of negativity, of cool anger, that America is trapped in is the defining feature of its decline. And in such a self-destructive age, to be positive — genuinely constructive, creative, inclusive, kind, graceful, gentle, true, not just “optimistic” and “hopeful” and other forms of passing the moral buck, but to see a glimmer of light burning right there, deep in the heart of every single human soul, no matter how different it is from the little “us”, even if it is as ugly as the alt-right or as cynical as the fringe left or as oblivious as the pundits or weak or desperate or foolish—to see that spark, to catch it, to hold it, to breath life into it — that, if you ask me, is the challenge of now. "body": "The Rage and the Light\n\n\nIt’s difficult. Let me see if I can clumsily put it to words.\nWhat is a society, anyways? To me, a society is just a way of relating to one another. How do we do that today? You, like me, are a member of many social groups. Religious, social, demographic. It doesn’t really matter what they are. Here’s what’s really unique about America today: every single group bears some kind of grievance against the others. It’s striking when you think about it — it’s distinctly not true in most other developed countries. Whether it’s the much-hated alt-right, the fringe left, the poor, the rich, the middle, blacks, whites, minorities, Muslims, anyone, everyone — bears a grievance, a grudge, a complaint. We’ll get to their validity.\nWhat happens next? Well, usually one group says to the next, or the rest: “you are the bad people!”. What’s really happening here? Think about with me carefully. We are projecting our flaws outwards, aren’t we? Before we are members of various identity groups, presumably, we are members of a society together. If we are not, then why are complaining in such a way where society is the object of the discussion at all? Why not just campaign to secede? Write off society entirely?\nNow that isn’t to say that society hasn’t failed people. Or something a little more positive, beautiful, useful, enduring?\nNow that isn’t to equivocate “levels” of failure. But virtue is not really a calculable quantity. | title | The Competitive Advantage of Humility |
| body | Becoming better by embracing who you are I’m from Ohio. Moments before Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, I called my father to ask who he thought would win. “Dad, who do you think comes out on top?” I said. His response included no statistical or historical analysis, no mention of the Cleveland curse, no reference to LeBron James or Steph Curry. “Which team is more humble?” “Cleveland”, I said, half out of bias and half out of belief. “Golden State just looks entitled this year. I think they’re in their own heads.” Forty-eight minutes of basketball later, Cleveland brought home its first championship since 1964. Obviously there is no direct, one-for-one correlation between humility and winning. That would be absurd. Like winning the Finals after going down 3–1 absurd. But I do believe, like my father does, that there is a real, palpable, competitive advantage to humility. Why? Humility offers you the chance to be better than you were yesterday. Let me unpack that. Humility isn’t entitled Few things handicap people more than entitlement. Who knows, maybe nothing does. And I don’t mean you should always have zero expectations or work for free. What I’m talking about is entitlement that extends beyond your needs. Think you’re long overdue for that promotion? Probably. But every second you spend feeling like it’s owed to you makes you less valuable. Why? Because entitlement makes you less competitive, less hungry, less productive. It makes you a victim. Struggling with feeling this way? I’ve been there. A mentor once told me the best way to combat workplace entitlement is to intentionally accept your circumstances. I’ve tried this; it works. Every day, make it your choice to bring your best game and forget about your need to “be the man (or woman).” It’s impossible to play the victim when it’s your choice. Humility isn’t intimidated—it’s confident There’s a major difference between meekness and humility. Humility isn’t afraid of failure. It’s vulnerable. Humility demands the real you. Only when you are truly you can you grow. Now, I guarantee not being afraid of failure will lead to as many mistakes as the alternative. But a humble person’s mistakes aren’t embarrassments as much as they are learning opportunities and insights into areas where you can grow. Humility isn’t afraid of failure. It’s vulnerable. In engineering, there’s a psychological handicap known as Impostor Syndrome—the fear of not being as skilled or talented as you’re perceived to be. Unfortunately, it’s a real and terrifying struggle for many engineers. At some level, we will always feel like we should know everything about engineering, regardless of experience. If you’ve ever felt this way or do currently feel this way, you have every right to—it’s a real emotion and a constant pressure. But let me challenge you with this: Humility doesn’t care if others know the real you. The moment where the end of your technical prowess is realized should never be made embarrassing. How else are you to learn? How else will you be presented with opportunities to grow? Learning humility should always be correlated with learning more about yourself. It lets you become comfortable in your own skin. It makes you genuine. It makes you human. Humility makes you a better leader The humble manager hires employees who might be better, who might have more potential, and who might climb the ladder faster. The humble manager is more concerned with the success of their team and finding affirmation in watching their people achieve their goals. In contrast, an arrogant manager cripples themselves and their team by hogging praise to ensure they are top dog. The humble leader embraces the limitations of their own abilities and goes to their best people for insight. A foolish leader believes they are the smartest person in every room, and are hindered by what they don’t know they don’t know. In this manner, humble leaders set themselves up for success not only by attracting and retaining top talent, but also by gaining a clearer picture into the inner workings of their team. This immediately impacts their ability to support and enable what works and identify what doesn’t, making the whole team efficient, productive, hot fire. At Rocket Code, our most outspoken company value is “Ever Better,” the idea of perpetual forward movement rooted in a foundational understanding of who we are, and fueled by a hunger to be better today than yesterday. In this regard, humility is our greatest asset. So how do we celebrate success without losing our competitive advantage? A close friend of mine said it best: “Be affirming, not flattering.” Flattery cheapens praise and stunts growth. On the other hand — grounded in reality, affirmation begets positivity, and honors outstanding moments, yet keeps us humble. It’s a good thing. Bringing it in Competitive humility is an art. I’m lucky to have comrades who help keep me in check. I highly recommend it. It’s damn near impossible to be self-aware enough to know where you are in the humble–confident–arrogant spectrum. So find a mentor, or someone you trust completely, and ask. It may be tough to hear, and it’s only natural to be somewhat defensive, but I promise learning humility will not only make you more competitive—it’ll brighten your outlook on life, freeing you to become the best you can be. | title | Next-Gen Food |
| body | Technology and empathy offer hope for the future of food Hyperlink is produced by Winning Edits. By Matthew Gartland Our relationship with food is changing in ways we may not fully realize or understand. The Internet Age has given us instant connection to food sources, replete with options such as online grocery ordering and meal-in-a-box subscription services. And how we get our food isn’t the only variable in flux; what we get — the food choices themselves — is being disrupted by new technologies, services, incubators, and non-profit organizations just as much as the delivery mediums that ship those foods to our doorsteps. Innovation in food science, food technology, food services, and food advocacy is brimming with hope — a hope for continued progress in areas such as food integrity, humane animal welfare, eco-friendly farming and raising, local farming and raising, efficacious supplements, awareness of sustainability efforts, alternative food market options, exposure to food prep and cooking skills, and so much more. This hope for change and progress is fueling influential trends and shaping market shifts. Increasingly, consumers demand to know what substances they are putting into their bodies. Are the foods nutrient rich and free of pesticides, antibiotics, and genetically modified organisms (GMO)? What allergens may exist in those foods? And does the food producer care about the environment and how it’s contributing to the sustainability of the food economy for generations to come? The demand for such information is no longer a luxury; in our Internet Age, providing such information is table stakes for anyone producing a food product or contributing to its distribution and consumption. Food options and ingredients can be searched on any mobile device in an instant from any grocery or restaurant. Consumers are blanketing social streams with pictures of what they’re eating in real time and whether or not they’d recommend it to their friends. Apps like Yelp and Foursquare encourage the rating of restaurants in large part based on the quality of their food. Ultimately, consumer demand for authentic food information and recommendations is a mainstream reality that food tech companies cannot and should not ignore. This caliber of consumer demand has given rise to food tech startups that are pushing the limits of engineered food. Take, for instance, Clara Foods, a Silicon Valley venture capital-backed company that is working toward an advance in food technology by creating the world’s first animal-free egg white. Or look at the Food Assembly, a European organization with a vision to create a future where everyone has access to the pleasure of local food, and is connected to the people who grow it, raise it, and harvest it. Don’t let the esoteric nature of such innovative food companies mislead you into thinking that the food tech sector is small and desolate, because it’s anything but. “The Internet of Food” has become a recognized, even a hot, opportunity that’s already attracted major investors willing to shill out big bucks. Blue Apron, the company that tech news site Recode describes as “the grocery startup that ships boxes of recipes and ingredients to the homes of wannabe chefs,” had raised nearly $200 million at a $2 billion valuation as of last October. And Impossible Foods, the company on a mission to convert meat lovers to plant-based meat burgers, has raised $182 million from investors that include Google Ventures and Bill Gates. The food tech scene is so vast and diverse that venture capital database CB Insights organized major players in the industry into the following categories: next-gen foods, next-gen drinks, restaurant delivery, meals on-demand, office catering, meal kits, grocery delivery, speciality foods, farm-to-table, liquor on-demand, chefs on-demand. While hope is a supercharger at the center of the food tech revolution and the influential trends and diversity born from it, a lesser known — yet more powerful — force is at the root of our relationship with food in these changing times. That emotion: empathy. xploring empathy for food in a world of UberEATS and Postmates may seem cognitively disjointed. But to food tech professionals like Mike Lee, highlighting and advocating empathy for food — and more so, the food system — is the game-changing pursuit we need as a society to prevent unintended societal and environmental costs that might plague our future. Lee is the founder of the Future Market, a futurist food lab that explores the impact of food systems transformation on the food we eat over the next ten to fifty years. In his essay “Empathy for the Food System,” he writes that “In food, we’ve grown accustomed to the idea that products and services have been designed with our needs in mind.” He calls it a human-centric design disposition that favors the user over the system and, therefore, produces a condition where “. . . humans have mastered the art of bending food to our whims.” To Lee, that expectation is inherently in conflict with the laws of nature, and lacking in the responsibilities progressive food designers should embrace. According to Lee, “as a society is able to successfully meet its core needs for food, it should have a responsibility to fulfill the goal of leaving the Earth better for the next generation.” One may interpret his perspective simply as a commitment to a sustainable and thriving relationship with food whenever and wherever a food choice must be made. Lee’s may be a utopian point of view, but it could become a standard for everyone who thinks critically about their relationship with food. And as a new generation of food tech companies plows headlong into the next big idea, Lee’s perspective could also be a litmus test—one that can help these companies ensure alignment of their vision with the fundamental needs and constraints of a future global society. |

| body | 1. Menemen This traditional Turkish breakfast item is scrambled eggs cooked in sautéed vegetables and served hot with bread. Dip it, spread it, or spoon it up. 2. Köfte A Turkish staple, köfte is balls or patties of ground beef or lamb, and can be served stewed, in sandwiches, over salads, or plain with yogurt. 3. Mantı Mantı might remind you of ravioli at first sight, but the traditional Turkish dish is completely unique in taste and texture. Small beef or lamb dumplings are boiled or fried and served with yogurt or butter, and often accompanied with a range of spices. 4. Kuzu Tandır The meat for this popular lamb dish is traditionally hung and slow roasted whole, and it often served with rice or potatoes, and yogurt. 5. Lahmacun This flat and crispy bread is traditionally topped with minced meat, salad, and lemon juice (thought the above is a beetroot vegan option!), and can be wrapped, folded in half, or pulled apart to eat. Cheap and available on any street corner, it's the perfect light lunch or snack while touring. 6. Börek Turkish savoury pastry comes in many varieties, most popularly filled with minced meat or spinach and cheese. Börek can be rolled, served as puffs, or layered like lasagna, and served for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack. Anyway you have it, börek is always flaky and delicious. 7. Baklava Nutty, syrupy, pastry dessert is never better than when served in Turkey. Often topped in ground pistachios, baklava is sweet and unique, and should be eaten fresh! 8. Pide Often called "Turkish Pizza," Pide is a boat-shaped flatbread served with a variety of toppings, often minced meat or spinach and cheese. 9. Güllaç A traditional dessert most often served during Ramadan, güllaç is a uniquely textured treat made from dough, milk, rosewater, nuts, and pomegranate seeds. You might find other fruit or chickpeas in some variations. 10. Meze It's common to have meze, or a range of cold appetisers, with drinks or in place of a full meal. Dinner guests are provided with around 20 choices, bean dishes, salads, and spreads on small dishes to eat with bread. 11.Dolma Dolma is often used to refer to stuffed vine leaves, but encompasses any stuffed vegetable. Vine leaves are popular in Turkey, but so are stuffed peppers, courgettes, and aubergine. 12.Lokum Lokum, or Turkish Delight, is a nougaty dessert served with a variety of flavours and fillings and often topped with powdered sugar. It's always best fresh, as pre-packaged versions tend to go too light on the fillings and too heavy on the sugar, drying it out. 13.Şiş Kebap Meat on a stick originated in Turkey, wouldn't you know? Sis Kebab is typically lamb, chicken or fish served on a wooden or metal rod, often with bread. Dip it in yogurt or eat it on its own; it's always tender, savoury, and delicious. |
