| body |
https://steemitimages.com/DQmYQmtzrbZ6vVXtnYHP93gLQL9QzTENENAyhUgLCULWQDy/image.png
An old friend of mine stopped by today. She was curious as to what I really do for a living. I sometimes ask myself the same thing. So it was a good thing for me, because it reminded me that I do have a real job. Most regular folks (as I like to call them) cannot comprehend what a Dog Walker / Pet Sitter (puppy wrangler - cat puke cleaner - bunny poop photographer - vicious cat injector - etc) actually does during the course of a normal day. When meeting people and telling them what I do, I get two distinct responses. There's the "OMG, that is the best job ever! You're outside playing with dogs all day!" response. And then there's the "you do what?! Is that even a real job? Do people pay you for that?" reaction. Yes, we are outside most of the time, no matter the weather. We're out in driving rain that stings your face and soaks you to the bone, to the point where you can feel the droplets running down the small of your back into your butt crack. We're out in snow so deep you have to dig your way into the house to get the dog out. We're out in 100 degree heat with 95% humidity that's so oppressive it's difficult to leave the car's AC. It's not always yellow labs playing Frisbee on the beach. Only sometimes. It is a real job, and yes, people do pay me to do it. Sure, you could get the kid from down the street to come walk Petsy for a few dollars. A friend or a family member may be able to help out here and there, after work, or on their days off. Heck, you might even be able to come home from work every lunch hour and take care of Petsy yourself. That's all well and good, until the kid forgets to show up or has a ball game he forgot to tell you about. Or until friends and family stop answering the phone when you call - hmm, I wonder why? Let's not forget your lunch break - here's hoping you never get stuck in traffic or have a breakdown, or that the boss never makes you work straight through it. I've done other jobs. In fact, I've done many. I've dug holes, painted, plumbed, planted, dish-washed, cooked, managed, bar-tended, and even jumped out of planes. Working as a chef for many years, I thought I had found my true calling. Eventually, though, eighteen hour shifts and hardly a single day off made me reconsider. My days now can be just as long, but as I drive around visiting pets, usually with my own dogs in tow, the only cooking I think about now is, what's for dinner. So here I am. A professional Dog Walker / Pet care provider. I have insurance, a uniform, a website, and business cards. I'm trained in Pet First Aid and Animal CPR. I can give insulin shots and subcutaneous fluids. I know the difference between a Vizsla and a cat (Vizslas are bigger), and that Puggles and Border Collies are some kinda crazy. That's just the small stuff. The best part of the job is is discovering each animal's individual personality. Some are sweethearts, angels and love-bugs, and you just can't stop yourself from picking them up and giving a hug, hopefully getting a lick on the nose in return. Others are determined to test your patience, with the whining and barking or with playing catch me if you can. Or sometimes they even pee in the car - yes, the new car, only one day old. Either way, I get to know what makes them tick. Spending hours with many of them on a daily basis will do that. I know the dogs by their barks, the cats by their meows. The rabbits, not so much. My car usually smells like a wet dog on a hot day. Come to think of it, I might smell that way too. I get peed, puked, and pooped on (so far, not all at the same time - yet). Gone are the pressed suits, shirts, ties, and shiny shoes. Now it's only hoodies, jeans, and a sensible pair of New Balance. Gone are the days of staying within the same four walls. With every step I take, my office continuously changes. I think I've found a job that fits. |

"body": "
https://steemitimages.com/DQmYQmtzrbZ6vVXtnYHP93gLQL9QzTENENAyhUgLCULWQDy/image.png
\n\n\nAn old friend of mine stopped by today. She was curious as to what I really do for a living. I sometimes ask myself the same thing. So it was a good thing for me, because it reminded me that I do have a real job.\n\nMost regular folks (as I like to call them) cannot comprehend what a Dog Walker / Pet Sitter (puppy wrangler - cat puke cleaner - bunny poop photographer - vicious cat injector - etc) actually does during the course of a normal day. When meeting people and telling them what I do, I get two distinct responses. There's the \"OMG, that is the best job ever! You're outside playing with dogs all day!\" response. And then there's the \"you do what?! Is that even a real job? Do people pay you for that?\" reaction.\n\nYes, we are outside most of the time, no matter the weather. Only sometimes.\n\nIt is a real job, and yes, people do pay me to do it. Let's not forget your lunch break - here's hoping you never get stuck in traffic or have a breakdown, or that the boss never makes you work straight through it.\n\nI've done other jobs. My days now can be just as long, but as I drive around visiting pets, usually with my own dogs in tow, the only cooking I think about now is, what's for dinner.\n\nSo here I am. The rabbits, not so much.\n\nMy car usually smells like a wet dog on a hot day. With every step I take, my office continuously changes.\n\nI think I've found a job that fits.",

| body |
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iM3ye40MoYo/UMaYB1AhUGI/AAAAAAAAAmE/UfvzK6YtpD4/s400/Tip+Envelope.jpg!
I'm a dog walker. As part of my business, I offer clients pet transportation services - Pet Taxi, if you will. If they are unable, I transport their pets to and from vet or grooming appointments. One of my most senior clients is 88 years old. Her dog, Moby - not his real name - joins my playgroup a few times a week, and since the client is always home, I get to spend a few minutes chatting with her each time I pick up or drop off the dog. What I've come to realize is that Moby's owner is very sweet, but very forgetful. Sometimes she inquires about my day, asking, "Are you busy today?' After giving her a short explanation about what I have to do, she usually follows up with, "Are you busy today?" After two or three of these repeats, I usually just head for the door shouting, "I'll see you next time - goodbye!" A few weeks ago, she asked me if I would be able to take Moby to the groomer's. I agreed, and so the appointment was made. A few days later, I went to her house to pick up the dog. I rang the doorbell. The dog barked. She yelled, "COME IN!" I walked into the hallway, then heard her call out, "I'm in the kitchen." I went into the kitchen, and there she was, sitting at the large table with four white envelopes in front of her. "I've got everything sorted for you," she told me. "These are yours." She handed me two of the envelopes. "And these are for Jennifer," the groomer she had been using for almost ten years. Another two envelopes for her, as well. I began to ask the reason for all the envelopes, but she beat me to it. She explained that one was payment for service and the other was a tip. She did seem to have it all sorted. I was about to leave, but she stopped me. She took my face into her hands and said, "You don't know how much this means to an old lady like me. I would have no other way of doing this. You're an angel." See - I told you she was sweet. On the drive to the groomer's, I was thinking, "When I get older, I hope I'm as nice as her." But I doubt it. I was also curious to see how much of a tip she gave me, so at the first red light, I opened the envelope with TIP written on it. $25.00 in cash. "WOW! That's a good tip," I thought to myself. Then I looked at the other envelope - it too had TIP written on it. Oh! Maybe the $25.00 was supposed to be for the groomer. I decided to open the other envelope - $25.00, as well. So it was not a mistake, she really was being generous. I proceeded to open the envelope with my name on it. $25.00 again. I wasn't as happy now, since I charge $35.00 for this service. I thought to myself, "Hey, she just gave me a $25.00 tip, so it's not a problem." I was still coming out ahead. I looked down at the last envelope. It looked skinny. Like there was nothing in it. I held it up to the light. NOTHING. NOTHING. It was very obvious there was NOTHING in the envelope. I opened it, hoping to be wrong. But no, it was empty - very empty. I had opened all the envelopes, and there was a total of $75.00. Moby is not a small dog, and I go to the groomer's enough to know that $75.00 is not going to cover his new hairdo. So I got to the groomer's. I opened the door, and Jennifer yelled, "MOBY!!" They obviously knew each other. She prepared to start working on Moby and said that she would call me when he was done and I could come pick the dog up. I asked how much it was going to cost, and she said, "it's normally $95.00 for a dog like Moby, but as his owner is a really nice customer who has been coming here for years, I only charge her $75.00." **What would you do?** |

| body |
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bcX2SgfnQN0/UNOAWdtCHII/AAAAAAAAAMg/pdpBd7EzEqY/s400/eye.jpg!
Yes, you read it right. I got dog poop in my eye. "How could that happen!?" I hear you ask. Well, let me tell you. I took some dogs to a nearby park right by the beach. It's a small park, but the dogs can still get off leash for a bit of a run-around. It was a very blustery day - bright sunshine with clear blue skies, but just a tad windy. Into the park we went. Run-around, run-around, chasey, chasey, bark, bark - all the usual stuff. And, like normal, the usual stuff meant poop time, too. I take great pride when all the dogs poop. It makes me feel like I've fully done my job. A 100% poop ratio is my goal. I always have the ubiquitous blue poop bags on hand, as any dog walker or owner should. Never go to work without your tools, right? One of the dogs started to do his poop walk - you know, the wide legs, arched back, tail up kind of thing. I made my way over to where he was, unrolling a poop bag as I walked. I put the bag over my hand like a surgeon putting on his gloves. I bent over and began to pick up the poop. I have done this literally thousands of times in my life. I can pick it up without even looking. It's like I have muscle memory. At that very moment, a huge gust of wind blows a pile of dust into my face. Something went into my eye and it hurt. I took my hand out of the poop bag and instinctively rubbed my eye, trying to remove the foreign object. Then I felt a warm sensation on my eyelid and on my fingers. I opened my eyes slowly, looked at my fingers, and realized I was looking at poop. When the dust blew into my eye, I must have squeezed the poop bag too hard and put my fingers right through it. My car was parked a few hundred feet away. I gathered up the dogs and marched over as quickly as possible. I wanted to get some water and hand sanitizer in order to begin the cleaning process. I thought after a thorough washing, my eye should be fine. When I awoke the next morning, I could not open my eye. It had swollen shut, and I knew I had a full blown eye infection. It took about two weeks to clear up. It has been said that the mistakes we make allow us to learn valuable lessons. The lesson I take away from this is: **Never put dog poop in your eye.** |

I made my way over to where he was, unrolling a poop bag as I walked. I put the bag over my hand like a surgeon putting on his gloves. I bent over and began to pick up the poop. I have done this literally thousands of times in my life. I can pick it up without even looking. It's like I have muscle memory.\n\nAt that very moment, a huge gust of wind blows a pile of dust into my face. Something went into my eye and it hurt. I took my hand out of the poop bag and instinctively rubbed my eye, trying to remove the foreign object. \n\nThen I felt a warm sensation on my eyelid and on my fingers. I opened my eyes slowly, looked at my fingers, and realized I was looking at poop. \n\nWhen the dust blew into my eye, I must have squeezed the poop bag too hard and put my fingers right through it.\n\nMy car was parked a few hundred feet away. I gathered up the dogs and marched over as quickly as possible. I wanted to get some water and hand sanitizer in order to begin the cleaning process. I thought after a thorough washing, my eye should be fine. \n\nWhen I awoke the next morning, I could not open my eye. It had swollen shut, and I knew I had a full blown eye infection. It took about two weeks to clear up.\n\nIt has been said that the mistakes we make allow us to learn valuable lessons. The lesson I take away from this is:\n\n**Never put dog poop in your eye.**",

I already had two dogs, Xuxa and Xander, both of whom I loved dearly. Xander had been through some serious health issues, as mentioned in previous blog posts. We had been through a lot together, and I always treated him a little more tenderly. I will never forget the pain he experienced. I had agreed to foster a pup for Great Dog Rescue N.E. The reason I had chosen to foster a puppy instead of an adult dog was that a younger dog would be adopted much more quickly. The average length of time it took for a puppy to get adopted is two to three weeks. Three weeks seemed like the perfect amount of time. I could help to get the puppy started on a training program and could have a great potty training routine in place for the new owners. It would also be beneficial to get the pup into my playgroup so that it would be well socialized with other dogs. Three weeks would be easy. It was a freezing cold mid-November day. I drove out to Harvard, MA to pick up our foster dog named Fendi. I walked into the kennel's front office and filled out some paperwork. The girl disappeared through a door, only to pop back out 2 seconds later with a tiny pup in her hands. She handed her over to me and without any further formalities said, "good luck with this one, she's trouble." All she had for a collar was one of the little paper ones that are used when transporting rescue dogs with her name scrawled on it in permanent marker. It looked pathetic. I carried her in my arms and placed her in the little dog bed I had put in the back of the car. I put a real collar on her. (Yes, I always have spare collars and leashes in my car.) Thinking she might have to pee before we headed back to Boston, I clipped a leash to her collar and brought her over to a patch of grass. She peed instantly. We made our way back to the car, but this time instead of going into the back, she jumped right into the front passenger seat. I always have towels on the seat for my own dogs, so I saw no harm in letting her stay there as long as she would sit still for the ride home. I should not have worried - she slept the whole way. We got home. I took her to the front yard before bringing her into the house just in case she needed to pee. I was trying to avoid any accidents in the house. She peed right away, took two steps, pooped, then turned around and ran right up the steps into the house. "OK, that was easy," I thought to myself. A few hours passed - she slept for most of them. I thought it would be good to take her out again. I opened the door and was about to bend down to put a leash on her, but she was already gone. I looked over to the yard and she was in a squat doing a pee. The moment she finished, she ran right over to me and sat down, staring right into my eyes. This was just too easy. In 40 years of dog ownership and with many years in the dog industry, I can honestly say she was the easiest dog I have ever potty trained - I did nothing. Time for bed - what to do with the new puppy? Xuxa and Xander sleep on the bed. They have always slept at my feet and do not like being under the covers or near my face. So I was a bit surprised when Fendi buried herself under the covers with me. She squirmed her way to my neck, curled up into a tight little ball, and promptly fell asleep. She did not wake until morning. This has now become the norm. The next trial for little Fendi was going to be the car ride to the dog park. Xuxa and Xander got into their usual spots, lying side by side in the passenger seat as they had done for almost six years. I was going to put Fendi in the back, thinking my two would not tolerate a third dog in the front seat. Fendi jumped right in between them, and all three lay there like they had been doing it for years. Xuxa and Xander are around a lot of other dogs all the time, but they are very aloof and generally prefer the other dogs to keep their distance. The first time Gidget jumped on Xander from the couch, landing on his back before bolting down the hallway, Xander took off running after her at full speed. I thought there was going to be blood. Then they both flew back into the living room, careened onto the sofa, and roughhoused for about ten minutes. Instant best friends. And when Xuxa allowed Gidget to lick her face for a full minute without too much protest, well, let's just say, that's Xuxa's version of acceptance. I had been taking care of this little love bug for about three days, but saying the name Fendi seemed to grate on me. The name just didn't fit her. For some reason, I always called her Gidget. I didn't see any harm in calling her that until she was adopted. She learned everything super quickly. Teaching her "Sit" took two minutes, "Down" another two, and I never even had to teach her "Come." From day one, anytime she was off leash, she ran like a maniac - but only in circles around me, one eye always looking straight at mine.

It was about the fourth day of her foster care that I knew I could never give this dog up. She fit into my life as if she had been here for years. She is fearless with a sense of caution. You can tell she's unsure about certain situations, but will she back down from them? No way. She forges on. Gidget is here to stay. |

| body | THROUGH A DOG'S EAR Music To Calm Your Canine Companion I was introduced to this album while attending a two-day seminar on separation anxiety in dogs. The seminar covered a number of different possible solutions, from Doggie Prozac to Dog Appeasing Pheromones. It also included this CD. I had heard of and used many of these ideas during my years dealing with dogs, but this music was new to me. I am normally very skeptical about things of this nature and tend to blow them off without a second look, but the person teaching this seminar was no fool. Malena DeMartini-Price is an expert in canine separation anxiety. If she was recommending this music, I thought I should take a closer look. The day after the seminar, I downloaded the first CD to iTunes and had a listen. "Meh," I thought, "that was a waste of $10.00." Later that evening, I had a bunch of emails to answer, so I decided to give the music another chance. I put it on and let it play. After about ten minutes, I realized that no one was clamoring to jump onto my lap. I looked over to the sofa. To my surprise, all four of the dogs were sound asleep. The next day, I had to go grocery shopping. I decided to leave the music playing on a loop. It couldn't do any harm, so why not? I got home about an hour later, and I expected the usual excited greeting. But it didn't happen this time. Instead, it took them a while to get off the sofa, do their yoga stretches, yawn a few times, then meander over to see me. Certainly not the normal welcome. Now, anytime I ever have to leave the dogs home alone, I put this on. It pretty much guarantees that I will come home to a much calmer household. I will leave all the science as to why this works to the creators, as they have fully explained all this on the website linked here and above. I highly recommend. Mark |

| body | HELP! MY DOG GOT SPRAYED BY A SKUNK! One of my clients, Luigi (pictured here), got sprayed in two separate incidents last week, losing a claw in one of the battles. Needless to say, he stank. His odor filled the car, and his usual seat-mate Lola refused to go near him. The rain we got on Thursday only made the problem worse. So how do you get that skunk smell to go away? I'm sure most people have heard of using tomato juice baths to get rid of the smell. Unfortunately, they simply do not work. In our experience, neither do the expensive products made specifically to clean your dog after its encounter. The most effective treatment we have found was first written up in 1993 by Paul Krebaum. The Recipe 1 Quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide 1/4 Cup Baking Soda 1 to 2 Tsp Liquid Soap (Dawn) Do not wet your dog. Resist the urge to grab him and shove him in the shower - it will only weaken the solution you are going to use on him. Using a plastic spatula or wooden spoon, mix together 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (DO NOT USE ANY OTHER STRENGTH), baking soda, and liquid soap in a plastic bucket. For very large dogs, just double the recipe. Apply the mixture to your dog as soon as you mix it - the solution will get weaker over time. Work the mixture deep into the fur and leave it on for about 5 minutes. Keep the solution out of your dog's eyes – it will sting. Rinse your pet thoroughly with warm water. Some heavily “skunked” areas may need 2 or 3 washes. Pour any left over mixture down the drain with running water. Warning! Do Not Store Or Bottle This Mixture - It Can Explode! This is hands down the best method for getting the skunk smell out of your dog. |

| author | markarmour |
| body | I HATE RETRACTABLE "FLEXI" LEASHES. I am a professional dog walker, and I hate flexi leashes. This is one piece of equipment you will never find in my doggie toolbox. Everyday, I see these hapless saps walking their completely untrained dogs on retractable leashes at full extension with the dog running willy nilly all over the place. I stand and watch as the dog gets tangled up with lamp-posts and trees, runs in between cars, runs up to other dogs uninvited, etc. Meanwhile, the clueless owner stands there doing an intricate dance routine, desperately trying not to get tangled up in the 15-20 feet of cord that at any moment could leave them with severe burns or maybe cut off a finger. Yes, fingers have been cut off - I'm not making that up. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iDv_7oFAnRg/UnFIsjgtItI/AAAAAAAAA7A/jVyrQmcf6kI/s320/Retractable+dance.jpg https://steemitimages.com/DQmb3XScdCNwVarsLSUvvDLGPtPf29YReLNmL6Hqgn1FE6G/image.png I've seen people dropping them, allowing Fluffy to take off. Now she is being chased by this noisy rattling plastic thing, exacerbating the situation and scaring her into running even further. These leashes are dangerous. For the safety of you, your dog, and the people around you, stop using them. |
