      "body": "https://s9.postimg.org/ihe42o7m7/tribute.png\n\nAs I was driving to work this morning, someone on the radio invited the listeners to think about the people who had been remarkable in their lives - what they did in special, and what we were  doing today that could influence others. \nOf course, a big part of who I am is influenced by my parents: my father's persistence, hard- working, honesty; my mother's love to read, her searching for excellence.  I am sure most of us reflect our parents’ characteristics. \n\nI can remember, also, several other people that made impact in my life. \n\nOne of them was this man. I was 17, at my first job, where, among my duties I had to manage my boss finances (I had no experience - I got the job based on the references given by the accounting school where I had studied). My boss used to take loans (a lot), and when it was time to do the payments, he would send me to negotiate extended time. \n\nAt one of the bank agencies, I met this man, who wasn’t the regular manager. He was an external auditor who was there temporarily, because there had been a robbery. As he was in the manager's chair, I asked him for more time to pay the debt. After I gave him several reasons and excuses, he agreed to 30 more days. After the month past, my boss sent me again, because, as always, he had no conditions to pay the debt. I took courage, sat in front of the same man, and asked him for more time. He looked severely, and said \"no\". I gave him my speech, he repeated: \"no\".  Then, he continued doing whatever he was doing before. \n\nAfter some time, he looked at me and asked what I was doing there yet. I was very much afraid of him, but I was more afraid of returning and face my boss with the \"no\", so, I answered I couldn't leave without him telling me he would agree with the extended time. He paused and then said he would concede the time, but it was for me not to return there at the expiration time.\n\nSome weeks later, my mother heard the same bank was in needy of employees. It was my dream to work in a bank, so, there I went to talk to the man again, this time to ask for a job. There would be a test, so I got the opportunity  to apply for a post. He was peculiar in how to give me the test results. One day, as I left the bank, after doing my daily deposit, the watchman raced after me at the street, asking me to return. I sat in front of him and he asked me how many days each month of the year had. I didn't understand anything, but I answered. Then he told me I had been selected, as I had gotten the best results at the test among 23 others, so I could start working there the following week. \n\nHe stayed there just for few months, after what I never saw him again. But, during all the many years that have past, I have never forgotten the experience and how it marked my life.",

Most teachers believe they should not demand of students to know anything by heart. While I agree it's important to understand concepts, I also believe it's important for kids beginning their math studies to know the multiplication table.\n\nBut how to make it interesting for them?\n\nI devised a method. Even though I am a competitive person myself, I don’t like competition. So, I thought of an exercise that would demand memory and would exercise their minds, one that required competition not against other students, but against one's own previous attempts.\n\nThis is how it works: the teacher prepares a few multiplication questions and give them faced down to the students, with the instruction not to turn the page. They write their names and date on the back of the page. All students start the test at the same time, while the teacher waits with a stopwatch.\n\nThe test should take an average student about three minutes, if he knows the multiplication table by heart, that is. Once a student is finished, he delivers the test and the teacher writes how long it took him, to the second.\n\n After four minutes, students were required to deliver their tests, leaving blank whichever questions they couldn't answer. These students required special attention and that is what I'd give them if it happened more than twice. \n\nI'd grade the tests at home, keeping in a spreadsheet each student's amount of right, wrong and blank answers, as well as the time it took him to finish the test.\n\nIt was a very personal process. Each student needed to improve his or her own performance the next time around: either by delivering less mistaken or blank questions, and by obtaining a better time.\n\nAh, and there was, of course, an incentive in the way of grades. For each performance improvement, students would get a 0.1 bonus to their grades, for a maximum or 0.3 (in Brazil, students are graded from zero to ten).\n\nThis method was usually very effective in stimulating students to improve their results. It was demanding for me to come up with the tests, which I could do only when I had some free time in my schedule. It was also necessary to correct the tests afterward, then make the statistics and so on. But it was worth it to watch them make the effort to improve themselves.\n\nThis project was one of the best I managed to accomplish. Even students that did not like math would be affected by the spirit of the activity and would try to excel.\n\nI wish to mention that several students have shown to be little geniuses. One of them would complete the test in less than a minute – he was a fast thinking machine. But even if the other students knew that one in particular was faster and was very good in multiplication, they didn't actually know much. They didn't know each other results at all. What made this project a success is the fact that a student would only be compared with his own previous results. For example, a kid that completed the tests in 2m35, 2m20 and 2m10 would receive the same extra 0.3 to his grade as if he had delivered at 3m10, 2m50 and 2m40.\n\nI found this project accomplished many good results. My little students had a chance to see how much fun mathematics can be, they would exercise their memories, they would improve their learning skills and, ultimately, they got motivated to try and overcome themselves.",

      "body": "Interacting with people in general, teaching Mathematics in particular, I came to \nthe conclusion  ⇒ few people like Mathematics. \nAmong them, there are those that: \n1)\tdislike    +       don’t know it;\n2)\tlike it ±  (have the knowledge just enough to manage their daily needs); \n3)\thate it; \n4)\thave trauma. \nWhile teaching, I made my own statistic. (I didn’t have the opportunity to compare \nthe results with other teacher’s) \nIn my experience, \n ≈10% of the students  arrived in my classes ready to enjoy studying the subject. \nFor them it was easy   =>    They liked it   => they liked “me”.  \nAs well, 10% hated the matter and myself, in the same way. \nThe other 80% were my special target  ⇒ I would try to help them to love math. \nUsually, students that didn’t like Mathematics would ask (and complain) about  \nwhy they had to study it. Would they use that specific subject? \n∴, every beginning of the year I would dedicate time to show the students\nwhy Math is useful, important for everybody to learn. \nIn my 5th year as a teacher, I had an idea    =       instead of give them reasons, I \nwould set a homework, as a project, in which they had 3 items to answer:  \na) Is it important to learn Mathematics?\nb) Give examples of jobs in which you will need the math knowledge. \nc) Give 3 examples of jobs in which you won’t need math knowledge at all. \nThis project was given to all my students (age from 10 to 15 years old). \nThe results were so interesting and positive that I even thought of making a book. \nOne day, one of the students approached me with the question   =\n“Teacher, I have asked everybody, searched a lot, but I can find 0 jobs that  don’t \nrequire the math knowledge.” \nNo need to say what it made me feel!!!!!",

      "body": "My friend @felixxx has been making a reasonable amount of rewards writing about foods. He said I should do this. I explained to him that I am living on a super-low budget diet, and yes, I am pretty sure that in most of the 1st world, this would probably cost more like 2 euros, but this is one of the benefits in living in the quaint, humble little 2nd world country of Bulgaria. I look forward to when I can eat more meat, and more vegetables, preferably fresh ones, preferably fresh from my garden. With my allergy problems, my diet options are limited. I even have problems when my frozen veg include capsicum.\n\nEggs are the best food ever. I have always loved them, and my earliest memories of breakfast were eating mashed up boiled eggs with soft yolks. One day I will have my own little coop full of chookies making eggs, and a rooster to make babies. You can really live almost just on chickens, eggs and some greens.",
