      "body": "# Plants of Interior Alaska\nThis summer I traveled around interior Alaska collecting plant ecology data for the National Ecological Observatory Network. Note that photos were taken with sometimes ID in mind but, also sometimes aesthetic.\n\n# Pedicularis sp.\nPedicularis, common name 'lousewort', is a genus in the Scrophulariaceae family, the same as snapdragons. They are a wildflower that is in bloom in the Alaska interior from late June through early August. There are many varieties - distinguished by their flower color, flower growth form, leaf form, and detailed plant physiology observations. Mt. Madison\n2. Mt. Adams\n3. Mt. Jeferson\n4. Mt. Washington\n5. Mt. Monroe\n7. Mt. Eisenhower\n8. Mt. Pierce\n\nThe trail distance from Madison to Pierce  is roughly 20 miles. There are a few smaller, less notable, peaks in between these specific mountains.\n\n## Presidential Traverse\nThe 'Presidential Traverse' is the hike in which all main 8 mountains (listed above) are peaked. Many people (such as myself) aim to do this in one day. The trail naturally covers the smaller peaks in between as well.\n\n## My Hike\nMy party parked one car at the base of Mt. Pierce and slept in the Mt. Madison parking lot the night before we planned to hike. Madison hut, peaked Mt. Madison, and returned to the hut for a snack, bathroom break, and water bottle refill. Washington is the highest peak in the Whites. It has a weather station, a large lodge, a railway, and even road. Here, we ate lunch and refilled water.
