| title | 5 South African National Parks to explore in 2017 |
| body | South Africa really is a great travel destination for so many reasons, what’s great about the country is that there are world class cities with public amenities that can compete with anywhere on the planet. So once you have explored some of the most rugged locations where many of your favorite wild animals can be enjoyed you will be in fairly close proximity to 5 star hotels and general cosmopolitan urban life. Here are 5 worthwhile national parks to visit in South Africa in 2017. Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State This popular South African national park situated in the Orange Free State is famous for so many reasons including being a pivotal location for those wishing to explore South African indigenous culture as it has been stated that the Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a great place to see San Paintings of the area. Its close proximity to Lesotho also means one can venture over the border if he or she gets bored of exploring the area. For more information visit this website. Mountain Zebra National Park, Eastern Cape This is another national park not just famous for its abundance of wildlife but also for the fact that it has many locations on site which have grave significance to the heritage of the country including san rock painting to ancient farmsteads and cemeteries. Due to extensive conservation efforts by locals of the location there is a small group of cape mountain Zebra which have survived over the ages hence becoming gravely significant to the wildlife of the area; this is why the national park has become so popular for so many reasons. Namaqua National Park, Western Cape A great aspect about visiting this area is it really has significance to the ancient history of Namaqualand and it’s believed that there is evidence of people inhabiting the area literally hundreds and thousands of years ago with artifacts such as hand axes being found in various areas within the location. These are said to be derived from mainly herder people who have been sighted in the area for what would seem like forever. The area is also famous for its abundance of breathtaking flowers which can be enjoyed during certain times of year. West Coast National Park, Western Cape This area in the West Coast has significant importance to the conservation of the area and many bird species can be found in some of the nearby offshore islands. The lagoon in the park is said to support somewhere around 10% of the coastal wader populations in the whole of the country. It’s said that this picturesque and profoundly significant natural area was declared a marine reserve by the Sea Fisheries Act in both 1973 and 1985 respectively; there is also a hotel in the Langebaan part of the park which makes it an even more convenient conservation area. Kruger National Park Kruger National Park is one of South Africa’s and Africa’s most sought after wildlife destinations for so many reasons from the majestic wildlife to world class accommodation and camping facilities there really is something for everyone so get out there and explore. The national park itself is big and sprawls for what could seem like an eternity this is why there is such an abundant array of wildlife and birdlife to be experienced including all of the big 5 as well, so get out there and explore. It’s advised to hire a car when doing this exploration.[Car rental South Africa](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/) is a great way in which to achieve this. |

| title | 5 small towns to visit in South Africa in 2017 |
| body | Another great aspect about South Africa is the fact that there are so many small towns to visit and everyone one of them is different and unique in their own ways. This has inspired a fantastic road trip culture which has kept so many people not just from South Africa but all over the world exploring. This is another great reason why South Africa is one of Africa’s leading tourist destinations. Here are 5 small towns to see and experience on your next road trip through South Africa. Betty’s Bay This beautiful part of the world sits nestled between mountains and the ocean and really is a great place in which to escape it all and relax for a few days. The biggest town nearby is Gordon’s Bay so if you need to go shopping or get your people fix don’t worry. Other notable places nearby to visit include Hermanus and Pringle Bay. Tulbagh Tulbagh is a historic town situated in the heart of the Western Cape winelands. Its Cape-Dutch inspired architecture and culture have kept it a firm favourite not only for local travelers but people from outside South Africa as well. It also boasts some of the Western Cape’s best places in which to eat as well as fantastic venues for weddings or functions. Its close proximity to Cape Town also makes it a great place for a weekend getaway. Eshowe Eshowe is a hugely significant town for the province of KwaZulu-Natal for so many reasons. Its home to an iconic forest entitled the Dlinza Forest as well as other prolific and pertinent landmarks to the area such as an historic jail. It also boasts one of the oldest hotels in the area The George and is a gateway to both iconic Zululand and the majestic North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Bathurst Many towns in the Eastern Cape of the country have a rich and diverse history and Bathhurst is no different. With close proximity to both Port Alfred and the university town of Grahamstown the area has much to offer holidaymakers. Established in 1820 as an administrative district for the British colonists of the time today it’s a quiet farming community boasting the oldest pub in the whole of South Africa The Historic Pig and Whistle. Barrydale Barrydale another must stop over town if you happen to be traveling through this particular part of The Karoo. Its close proximity to the location in which the famed Afrika Burn festival takes place has ensured some eccentric artists live in the town. The Barrydale Art Hotel also hosts regular live music events and exhibitions. And the town is a stone throw away from the weird yet charming Ronnie’s Sex Shop pub. Getting there Although public transport in most of the urban hubs within the country are suitable, once you leave the more built up areas this can become more of a challenge. If one does not own their own vehicle it's highly advised to hire one in order to be able to see and experience all the amazing sights and sounds of these great small towns. Luckily [Car Rental South Africa](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/) Car Rental South Africa is up to international standards with many reputable car hire companies having a branches in South Africa. |

| title | 5 Lesser-known hikes to do in Cape Town in 2017 |
| body | Cape Town is a city of the outdoors and many travel far and wide to experience these outdoors areas in their entirety. Most know of hiking trails up places such as Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. Yet many will also not know that there are many alternative routes to choose from. Some harrowing and some simple and enjoyable for the entire family, here are 5 lesser known hiking trails to explore in and around the mother city. Lion’s Head Loop This is the perfect afternoon walk/hike for those wanting to be in the midst of natural splendor but also not wanting to hike for days to achieve this. Also a noteworthy part of Cape Town great for walking dogs the hike takes one through beautiful pine forests, indigenous veld, a protea forest with spellbinding views of the city and ocean below. There is a steep drop at one of the sections nearing the road so please behave cautiously when navigating these sections. Table Mountain Contour Path This is a surprisingly low energy hike situated near not far from the popular Table Mountain hike which is definitely on the bucket list of most who venture to Cape Town to explore the nature of the area which is abundance everywhere. The path does join with the more popular route up Table Mountain Platteklip, however if you so wish you are welcome to carry on with your journey through the breathtaking Newlands Forest. Devil’s Peak This hike is fairly close to other more prominent hiking areas nearby, however it differs for the fact that one gets views of both sides of the city leading all the way to the Southern Peninsula. The hike has become a popular alternative to people hiking in the table mountain area inspiring people to even name certain products after the area. Make your way to Tafelberg Road and look the Devil’s Peak sign. India Venster This hike is quite a bit trickier than Platteklip Gorge and the sign warn hikers of the possible dangers of using this route as opposed to the other less challenging ones. However if hikers do decide to use this route they will be treated to some of the most spectacular views in the area. You won’t be disappointed but please be careful and keep your wits about you as you will have to navigate some steep sections. Kloof Corner Hike Described by many as the hardest route up Table Mountain for so many reasons hence one has to do adequate preparation if you wish to go on this hike. Don’t be fooled as hiking accidents are a real thing and it’s strongly advised to go on this hike with at least one other experienced hiker who has completed the route before. It does promise to have some of the most breathtaking views you will ever see however centrally not for the squeamish or ones scared of heights. Getting there Many of these hiking trails are quite near to each other however; Cape Town is a big city so if you’d like to visit most if not all of these trails it's best to hire a car.[Hire a car in Cape Town](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/car-hire/cape-town/) and get out there exploring all these fantastic hiking trails. |

| title | Exploring Route 56 - an alternative Transkei meander |
| body | Everyone loves a good road trip whether it’s just for a short weekend away or a journey traversing provinces and countries. Most people in South Africa have done a trip through the Transkei and everyone who has done it knows that during certain times of year the roads can become very taxing due to everyone wanting to get away. Why not opt to the scenic route after all it is your holiday and time shouldn’t be an issue. Route 56 provides you with an alternative which will take you through quaint towns, breathtaking views and interesting people. Towns Rhodes This tiny Eastern Cape Town might not have much in the form of nightlife or entertainment but if you’re looking for true untouched beauty this is the place to be. If trout fishing is what you’re into look no further as the Bell River is the place for such things. It’s also not far from the Eastern Cape’s highest mountain Ben Macdhui however if one wishes to visit this part of Route 56 it's advised to use a 4x4 as some of the roads are not up to standard. But a normal car throughout most of this route is fine; renting a car in Durban, Cape Town or Johannesburg will probably be your best option depending on where you are driving from. Dordrecht Dordrecht is a small town with a lot of history, heritage and charm. They pride themselves in architecture from yesteryear and they also have a museum dedicated to frontier history of the first settlers to the area. It’s very much a farming community and is situated not far from South Africa’s only dedicated ski resort; it’s deemed a great place in which to go trout fishing just as Rhodes is. Maclear Another small town with significant history to the Eastern Cape Province situated only 170km from East London and located along a part of the iconic Mooi River this is a perfect stopover road trip destination. Some of the attractions include hiking up Hiking Ben Macdhui peak, quad biking, horse riding and camping. Attractions Mariathal Mission and the Buddhist Retreat, Ixopo This is for those who really need to get away from all the loud and angry energies of the city and relax in calm serenity. The Mariathal Mission and the Buddhist Retreat situated just 90km from Pietermaritzburg is the perfect destination for this with nature in abundance and a fair deal of wildlife with views of the Umkomaas River this really is the perfect place to find your inner peace. For more information visit this website. Mountain Zebra National Park Not just an area famous for its wildlife but also a location which has huge significance to the first prehistoric human existence, the University of Stellenbosch has discovered roughly 30 locations along where Wilger River where there is clear examples in the form of pottery and stone artifacts which could be as old as 14 000 years. Flyfishing in Rhodes – The Wild Trout Association The Wild Trout association has their roots firmly planted in the Eastern Cape or Transkei area of the country. However you don’t have to take their word for it as the area really is has lots of majestic rivers to explore and relish in. For more information on some of the better areas in which to trout fish around the town of Rhodes visit this website. A scenic route The Naudé's Nek Pass This is considered to be one of the greatest passes to meander on in the area; however this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t present itself with challenges and is widely regarded to be a drive reserved exclusively for 4x4 vehicles only. Unfortunately [car rental in South Africa](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/) will not suffice and one would have to hire a 4x4 from Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban depending on where you will be navigating this wonderful part of South Africa from. |

| title | 6 must see small towns worth visiting in the Western Cape |
| body | Most tourists and travelers will know the Western Cape for the iconic Cape Town with its assortment of world class beaches, wine farms and wonderful hiking trails and nature. However there is also a great deal of small towns to explore in the region which are famous all for their own reasons. With the Garden Route just around the corner and the West Coast just a stone throw away it’s no wonder people love exploring all the towns and villages which the Western Cape are famous for. Paternoster – West Coast This town comes alive during the holiday season but nothing could ever take away its small town charm which has served a certain community of fisherman in what would seem like forever. Its desolate beauty and quaint restaurants and guest houses have turned it into a sought after destination for Capetonians looking to escape from the congestion of the city during their holidays. Barrydale – The Karoo This town which isn’t far from the popular Afrikaburn festival has become a haven for misfits and artists looking for a tranquil surrounding in which to do their work. The area has a popular hotel which is famous for hosting live music and art exhibitions. There is also the iconic Ronnie’s Sex Shop bar which has been in the same location for as long as anyone can remember. Betty’s Bay – The Overberg This iconic destination which isn’t far from the popular town of Hermanus, is a great place for a weekend getaway which isn’t far from Cape Town. The area is also famous for its penguins and the scenery is a site to behold, with picturesque and untouched views of both the icy Atlantic Ocean and breathtaking Overberg mountain range. Ceres – Cape Winelands Ceres a town famous the world over for being one of the biggest fruit producing towns not only in the Western Cape but in the entire country, the popular fruit juice brand for which named itself after the town and for good reason. The land is believed to be great for all varieties agriculture and the area has been providing amazing produce to the entire Western Cape for many years now. Mossel Bay – Garden Route This picturesque and slightly industrious town situated on the outskirts of the Garden Route is great for many reasons. It’s a sleepy town with enough action to keep the big city at bay. It’s also a world class surfing destination and its close proximity to other notable destinations such as Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay or Nature’s Valley have kept it a firm favourite holiday destination for decades. Nature’s Valley – Garden Route Nature’s Valley is a tiny holiday village nestled deep in the heart of the Garden Route of South Africa. There really isn’t much there besides for an abundance of nature. There is pretty much one shop, one restaurant and a dairy farm on the side of the road on the way in. It’s also the location for the popular Wild Spirit Backpackers who host live music pretty much every other night. Getting around The Western Cape has a fairly well connected public transport system which will enable you to get around easily and efficiently, however many of the bus, train or taxi routes will not go out to the more remote places so it optimal to [hiring a car in Cape Town](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/) |

| body | The South African surf scene might not be Australia, California or Hawaii. Yet most core surfers in the country would see this as a blessing rather than a curse as this has ensured that there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of surf spots that aren’t inundated with crowds which are scattered all over the country. Even the most sought after and crowded spots along the coastline and in comparison quite manageable in terms of crowds in the lineup. The garden route is not only picturesque but scattered with great places in which to surf. Here are 5 worthwhile places to surf on your next trip down the garden route, what’s also nice is most of these spots are situated within close proximity to the mother city so getting there is a breeze. If you’re on holiday and have no official form of transport [ car rental Cape Town](https://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/) will ensure you are exploring your favourite garden route surf spots in no time. Mossel Bay This picturesque garden route town situated just before other popular destinations such as Wilderness and George really is a surfer’s paradise. The water is also surprisingly warmer then spots closer to Cape Town which is also great for people wishing to escape the cold. Victoria Bay Situated within close proximity to the picturesque holiday village of Wilderness is this world class surf destination which has kept people not just from all over the country but the world coming from far and wide all to get a little taste of Victoria Bay. It may not be as cerebrated or as crowded for that matter as places spots such as Jeffery’s Bay or Cape St Francis, yet on occasion the wave can get just as good. Plettenburg Bay This could be one of the more built up towns in the whole of the garden route and although the surf isn’t as good or consistent as it used to be its still a great place to immerse oneself in your typical surf town experience. The surf inspired surf café is also a great place to unwind after a day of exploration looking for that perfect wave. Jeffery’s Bay This is not only one of the best waves in South Africa but the entire. In fact many have mutually agreed that it could very well be the best right hand breaking wave ever discovered and it’s literally the life blood of this small town which has grown exponentially largely due to world class right breaking point aptly titled ‘Super tubes’ when it’s on there is really no show like it on the planet. Cape St Francis Cape St Francis situated literally 40 minutes away from Jeffery’s Bay is a great place in which to relish in surf culture. The town itself is small and is very much geared around surfing and very little else. St Francis Bay across the pond is a town in which there is a little more action for those looking to do a little bit of shopping hence connecting to urban life. This is why the area is great for people looking for the best of both worlds. Bruce Brown and his surf film crew also discovered one of the best right hand breaking waves in the world in the 1966 surf classic The Endless Summer which put South African surfing on the global map. |
