Tolkien’s work compared to The Lord of the Rings movies, which were “based on actual printed materials.”\n\n“I just want to sort of quibble with the ‘vaguely connected,'” said Patrick McKay, who is showrunner on the series along with J.D. Payne. “We don’t feel that way. We feel like deep roots of this show are in the books and in Tolkien. And if we didn’t feel that way, we’d all be terrified to sit up here. We feel that this story isn’t ours. It’s a story we’re stewarding that was here before us and was waiting in those books to be on Earth. We don’t feel ‘vaguely connected.’ We feel deeply, deeply connected to those folks and work every day to even be closer connected. That’s really how we think about it.”\n\nThe Rings of Power is primarily based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, specifically the description of Middle Earth’s Second Age, and includes younger versions of some of the immortal elven characters in the original trilogy. The showrunners point out their work on the project extends back 25 years and they’ve closely collaborated with “incredible scholars who have devoted their whole lives to Tolkien’s work.”\n\nThe duo and the cast were also asked about the inevitable comparisons to HBO’s fantasy hit Game of Thrones, which has a prequel series, House of the Dragon, launching two weeks before the Sept. 2 debut of Rings of Power.\n\n“I’ll take a whack at that,” McKay said. “We talked about this a lot. It comes up and and we totally understand where where the question comes from. We don’t think of the show in terms of what genre or other shows that might be out there. We think about [Tolkien], his life’s work was creating this world. This is Tolkien’s Middle Earth and regions beyond Middle Earth and we just wanted to be true to that and sort of drown out and forget about what might be happening in another realm someplace else…. Tolkien’s work is endlessly applicable across cultures and across across times, and we feel really grateful to be able to bring it to life in our time.”\n\nActor Robert Aramayo was also asked about the “rivalry,” given he played Young Ned Stark on Thrones before being cast as Young Elrond in The Rings of Power.\n\n“I don’t feel rivalry .. the materials are so different,” he said. “I love fantasy. So now we obviously get to watch more fantasy, which can never be a bad thing.”\n\n“We got to see the first three episodes and the thing that really struck me is it felt very distinct,” added Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who plays Miriel. “There isn’t anything else like this on right now, and this doesn’t look like anything that’s come before. If you’re a fan of fantasy, or if you’re just a fan of good storytelling, there’s a boom time for you. You just get lots of good shows.”\n\nAddai-Robinson’s character is the queen regent of an island kingdom of Numenor and noted that the show’s sets were more practical than one might suspect in this CG era.\n\n“There’s that sense of, ‘Gosh, it must have been green screen and CGI.’ But to be honest, there was so much that was built practically. As actors, we all got to have that experience of turning around and really being in these worlds that were fully built and fully realized. And I think that’s really going to play when you watch these episodes … like Numenor is a fully built, fully functioning city with a dock and boats and other elements.”\n\nThe Rings of Power follows the forging of the original rings of power during the Second Age that allowed the Dark Lord Sauron to spread evil across Middle-earth. It’s set thousands of years before the events in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.\n\nWhile there are no hobbits in the series, there are hobbit ancestors called harfoots, who get some trailer time, as well as a first-ever look at some of Tolkien’s characters from the island kingdom of Númenor, such as Isildur (Maxim Baldry).\n\nAccording to Amazon, the show “brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle Earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle Earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”\n\nThe production was mainly filmed in New Zealand. Then last fall, it was announced production was moving to the U.K.\n\nThe ensemble cast also includes Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman and Sara Zwangobani.\n\nThe debut season of TROP will premiere Friday, Sept. 2, on Prime Video and will air in 240 territories around the world. New episodes will be rolled out on a weekly basis.",

Walks and carriage rides. Dances and parties. These are the things most of us usually associate with romance and courting rituals of the 1800s, but there was so much more nuance to the art of romance in the Victorian era than many would have us believe.\n\nGetting Cheeky\nIf a gentleman saw a young lady at a dance or other social event, they would have to be properly introduced through mutual acquaintances. Navigating the tricky world of the social party could leave a man floundering, especially when you consider the elaborate system of codes women communicated through their parlor fans. Here are a few:\n\nResting fan on left cheek: Not interested\nResting fan on right cheek: Interested\nDrawing the fan through the hand: I hate you\nHiding the eyes behind an open fan: I love you\nIf a fellow did find a girl who struck his fancy and longed to escort her home under the watchful eyes of her chaperones, he would give her his card. At the end of the event, the young lady would look through her collection of cards and choose the man she preferred.\n\nIf the gentleman found her company agreeable, he would then write a letter to the young lady’s father seeking his permission to court her. There were stringent guidelines for this step as well.\n\nAccording to Emily Thornwell, contributor to The Lady’s Guide to Perfect Gentility (1856), “Observe that letters of introduction are never sealed by well-bred people. Every letter to a superior ought to be folded in an envelope. . . . We must use sealing wax; men usually select red.”\n\nOnce the father agreed, the young lady would write to the gentleman and invite him to come call. However, she wasn’t to appear overly eager to see him (Thornwell). The entire affair was for the female to appear to be granting a favor to the male caller, to grace him with her presence. Typical courting activities included parlor games, singing, playing piano, and talking.\n\nTo Gift or Not to Gift\nA rule of courtship, according to T. S. Arthur’s Advice to Young Ladies, was no respectable young miss should accept a present from a gentleman until he offered a proposal of marriage, unless the gift was comprised of fruit, flowers, or candy. “Their perishable nature exempts them from the ban put upon more enduring memorials.”            \n\nAlong these lines, flowers had their own meaning all together. Floriography was a term coined during the Victorian era to define the meaning behind flowers.\n\nThis custom became so popular, people even carried around flower dictionaries to help them remember the meaning behind the flower they might be giving or receiving.\n\nFor example, daffodils signal new beginnings; daisies, innocence. Lilacs mean the first emotions of love, and periwinkles, tender recollection. Flowers were a coded way to express specific feelings—love or grief, jealousy or devotion.\n\nIf a man gifted a woman with flowers and their relationship progressed to matrimony, it was highly likely that she would choose one or two of the symbolic flowers he sent her during their courtship as part of her bridal bouquet.\n\nHow Do I Love Thee . . .\nMarriage was more often settled by pen and paper than anything else during this time. Letters flowed back and forth between courting couples and was the one place where they could truly express their deepest thoughts.\n\nWhen the Civil War erupted between the states in 1861, the passionate exchange of letters only grew. Consider this now-famous excerpt from Sullivan Ballou to his wife just before the First Battle of Bull Run.\n\nSarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battlefield, it will whisper your name. . . . If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah, do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again. . . .\n\nOf course, with the arrival of the Civil War, traditions and decorum took a back seat to life and death. Rules became lax. Couples married in haste. Life was fleeting and suddenly anxious young ladies and young soldiers had little patience for drawn-out courtships. Some couples even found themselves forced to marry for propriety’s sake.\n\nIn my new novel, All Through the Night, surgeon Joshua Ivy and nurse Cadence Piper are doing all they can to help the wounded on the battlefield. As Cadence cares for his children behind the battle lines and the attraction between them grows, Joshua’s captain fears their reputations will be shattered unless he can convince Joshua to do the honorable thing.\n\nCadence knew something was wrong the moment Joshua stormed to her side and pulled her away from her washpot, yanking the paddle from her hand and tossing it into the grass.\n\n“What are you doing?”\n\nHe cupped her elbow. “We need to speak. Now.”\n\nHer heart pinched as he led her into the privacy of the woods behind the laundering tents. Within the canopy of the forest, she turned to him and clutched his sleeve.\n\n“What’s wrong? Is it that man who was watching the children? Is he here?”\n\nHe blinked and shook his head. “No. No, nothing like that.”\n\n“Oh.” Her heart resumed its normal rhythm. “Then what is it?”\n\nHe swallowed. “Captain Archer, with the help of Mrs. Meade, has discovered you are not married.”\n\nShe studied him, trying to understand. “Am I supposed to be?”\n\n“If you remember, according to Miss Dix, yes.”\n\n“But you came to me during the influenza outbreak and asked me to come to the hospital to work.”\n\nA muscle ticked in his jaw. “Why do you think I suggested you wear that wedding band while at Judiciary Square?”\n\n“To eliminate questions. To protect my reputation. But you promised my unattached status would not be an issue. You said there were measures you could take to ensure I could continue working.”\n\nHe rubbed the back of his neck. “Which is why I’m here now. And it’s not just the fact that you’re unmarried. Captain Archer also believes having you care for my children with both of us unwed is . . . indecent.”\n\n“He thinks we are—?”\n\n“Yes.” Sorrow clouded his expression as his gaze held hers. “Forgive me. In my haste to protect my children, I didn’t consider every aspect of this situation. In the tumult of war, who could imagine superiors noticing or caring about the platonic arrangements between a laundress and a surgeon?” He blew out a thick breath. “I hold sway at Judiciary Square. I have none out here. The fault is mine.”\n\n“What shall be done then?”\n\nHis lips pressed tight. “We have two options. So, naturally, when we spot \"dermatologist-tested\" or \"dermatologist-approved\" on the packaging of skin-care products, those words carry weight — even if we're unclear on what they mean exactly.\n\nFirst, know that they both have the intention of lending credibility to product efficacy, explains board-certified dermatologist Jessica Weiser, MD, FAAD, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University. Semantically, you could make the argument that they have a similar connotation. It might be assumed that if a dermatologist is testing a product, they approve it. Also, it could be reassuring enough just to know that a doctor played even a small part in the formula you're about to put on your precious skin, even though it's really a cosmetic chemist doing all the formulating. Needless to say, it's easy to get confused.\n\nEven though \"dermatologist-tested\" and \"dermatologist-approved\" have different meanings, experts aren't so sure that either term tells you much about a product's efficacy. \"These terms are primarily beneficial for marketing as they are nonspecific and often biased,\" Dr. Weiser says. \"Doctors may be paid consultants or offered financial incentives for either testing or approval.\" Plus, there aren't any solid legal regulations for either term. Keep reading for Dr. Weiser's breakdown of the meanings behind dermatologist-tested and dermatologist-approved.\n\nWhat Dermatologist-Tested Means\n\"It means that at least one dermatologist tested the product for one observable feature — safety, sensitivity, skin tone, etc.,\" Dr. Weiser says. \"Tested, however, does not mean that it met the expected end point, only that it was tested.\" Generally speaking, she says, claims from larger companies tend to be legitimate.
