bodyVery nice article, you got yourself a follower and an upvote. I sincerely hope that anyone and everyone ivolved in developing this platform reads this and understande the utter importance of not having it become the victim of their own power-thirst or micro-management itches. It is already in severe danger of whales flagging articles for no good reason. Just look at Jeff Berwicks stuff getting clipped by collectivist political zealots, it's truly a disturbing threat, that I really hope will be mitigated in the near future, or I'm likely to move on myself in the not too distant future. And it would be a damn shame, but that's how it goes. I much rather have a centrally controlled space with no censorship or sabotage, run by trusted idealists, than have a de-centralized hosting with bullies roaming around fucking it up for good writers with controversial or opposing opinions. I already got an account and a wordpress blog prepared on Network23, hoping I never have to move my stuff there. But as you elegantly illustrate, it seems to be a trend. One that can seeminly only ever be defeated by technological/systematical means. Keep posting, I bet you have lots more to say!

bodyI think the developers would argue that those who vote up a story early which later gains significant popularity deserve 'good curation recognition'. That is, they got it right in predicting what others wanted to read. But as you point out in another comment, that doesn't mean the submission lacks quality. It merely means it lacked popularity. And given the Steam Power system, popularity isn't necessarily a function of votes - but is also influenced by the powerful influencers. I think you've missed my point in bringing up a Tragedy of the Commons. Because it goes to the heart of why I think the comparison in this article is problematic. Regardless, it's well done. And I enjoyed reading it.

bodyHey @maynard, thanks for your reply! The comparison between the two situations was focused on whether an individual chooses for himself or for the community. We often intend to be self-focused and so we focus on our individual profits instead of our contribution to the community and to others. But yep, you are right! We're not struggling with a Tragedy of the Commons problem on Steemit! Our votes aren't running out like the ocean's resources do. Anyways, we are individuals with the choice to focus on our profits or to focus on utility and other people. That's the same for fishermen, the focus on what others will do will help them estimate their expected income over years and the choice whether not to is dependent on utility factors like their own valuation of the community, the environment and other people. And so should we think about whether we would spend our votes on our own profit or on the community and other people. We are limited in votes as our voting power decreases the more we do vote. Otherwise we could simply vote up every post on Steemit :-)

bodyHi Chris, You compare Indonesian fishing practices with voting here on Steemit. Interpret this comparison through Utility Theory (a utilitarian analysis). And conclude that steam voting can be understood through a profit maximization matrix. I think that fairly describes your argument. I'm not so sure the two compare. For one, Indonesian fishermen face a declining bounty through overuse - or abuse - of their seas. This can be seen as a [Tragedy of the Commons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons) problem, where a few game a shared resource to take more than their fair share - thereby destroying it for all. In a pure free market, the incentive is for individuals to maximize utility of that resource regardless of its sustainable use or the needs of others. It eschews collective action. But if enough people organize to impose a regulatory system on use - with penalties for misuse - then resources can be shared and allotted per the institutional goals of the group. Not necessarily by equal share - though that's possible too. But certainly in a way to prevent Tragedy. So the question is, how is this similar - or dissimilar - to Steamit voting? Are the two comparable? Well, every member has a vote. But some votes are more equal than others. This is determined by a Steam Power metric. Those with Power can influence notoriety and placement of a submission more than others. But is it a zero sum game? And that's the crucial question. A Tragedy of the Commons is built on the premise of a zero sum game imposing competition to the depletion of a limited resource. But votes aren't a limited resource. And use of Steam Power isn't really zero sum. Steam is much more like an imposed regulatory system managed by an automated system. Which doesn't mean it can't be gamed. Just as all regulatory systems can be. But given its structure, does mean outcomes should be more transparent than most bureaucratic systems run purely by people.

Just as all regulatory systems can be. But given its structure, does mean outcomes should be more transparent than most bureaucratic systems run purely by people.",

bodyI saw another video by Edmonds that was uploaded a day or two ago and she is suspicious of Greenwald now more than ever. I don't think she can compete with Greenwald who is backed by billionaires so I was not thinking about them as competitors. Edmonds' site is funded by a crowdsource (kickstarter) that netted them about $150k USD and that will last them the next 6 months or a year I think. I haven't accused Greenwald of lying. I just don't trust him so I don't give any weight to his assertions. Remember when the british border service (or police) detained Greenwald's boyfriend at Heathrow airport. That was the intimidation. Next came the offers of of huge sums of cash. Greenwald may well be a fine and honest person but it is hard to know how one would respond under such circumstances.

And thereby dis-incentivizes digging through New for unnoticed original content. And finally, there's no penalty for submitting plagiarized or otherwise infringing work.

bodySo you respond to the Trolley Problem by stepping outside the boundaries of it as a thought experiment and imposing real-world constraints. Instead of dealing with its implications. You've got the same problem with the Prisoner's Dilemma. Both of these are commonly assigned in undergraduate theory classes. And I don't think the answer you provide here would pass muster. Regardless, thanks for the reply.

bodyThe trolley problem always cracks me up. I've come to call it the clusterfu#% problem. There is no right answer. There's a long string of incompetence required to get into that situation. Why are these people on the track in the first place? Did the company know work was being done? You would think so since they're paying for it. Why didn't they inform the engineer, change schedules etc? If this fat guy is big enough to stop a train, the little dude isn't going to be able to move him. Was he airlifted there that morning by a chinook? Now we have a conspiracy on our hands. And what kind of pedestrian crossing could hold that kind of mass? It's just physics man:) If we are talking about gross negligence of all parties involved, no wrong has been done here. It's just an accident. If not, someone allowed one of the dominoes to fall on purpose and the simple ethical rule in the article applies. They are wrong. And what to do with the poor guy left to make the awful decision? I don't know man. Sucks to be you. Again, clusterfu#%. The Prisoner's dilemma: See the chaos that results from stealing? This problem needs to be cut off at the root. They should have never gone to jail in the first place. Obviously they did something wrong or they wouldn't be in this situation unless the cops are corrupt in which case they are in the wrong and this mess results. There is nothing wrong with selfishness. Modern society has given it a negative connotation. If you're truly selfish, you would always do the right thing because it's the most beneficial to you. True selfishness is ethically doing whats best for you which is what most of us do anyway. I say most because we have government and criminals who don't, but I repeat myself. Its only a wrong when you're stealing something from someone else; time, property, information etc.

bodySo your argument is that because his web site received capital financing to cover startup costs, and because Sibel Edmonds (who runs a competing alternative news web site) has 'concerns', therefore one should discount Greenwald's statement confirming communication with Snowden? A man who clearly has been in communication with Snowden before. One who clearly has direct access to him. Can you point to any statement Greenwald has made in print or in an interview that has been proved to be a lie? Why should anyone assume his statement is a lie?

bodyI've had plenty of experience with Linux. It's a fine operating system. But it lacks many crucial commercial applications that makes it unviable for producing many kinds of deliverables to clients. You want to do graphic design? Or film production? Or photo editing? Or animation? Or 3D rendering for anything from architecture to criminology to television advertising? Or music production? Or even plain accounting? Then you will not be running Linux. Because the tools in commercial use typically require Windows - and sometimes (if you're lucky) MacOS X. The Adobe suite. Autodesk. Avid. Fruityloops. Etc etc etc. (MSOffice cough) It's not fair. And you could argue there are free tools that perform many of the same tasks. Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, Ardour, LibreOffice, etc etc etc. All fine tools. That no one in the commercial world uses. So if you want to sell your work, you use what your clients use. Or you go hungry.

bodyI think there's a serious underlying problem to all 'basic income' proposals. One that's not mired by ideological economic arguments for capitalism and the old protestant work value. But really centered on power politics and caste stratification. It's very simple. Basic income is a gift. Like welfare, it may or may not be sufficient for survival - depending on the vagaries of elite charity. And like welfare, it will engender dependency of the many on those institutions or elite who gift this welfare. Who controls the levers of distributing basic income will have control over all those dependent on it. They will become serfs. Another slave class. Unable to even eat without the largess of the patron class. Can you imagine how this might be used to prevent political or social organization? How this might be used to suppress freedom rather than promote it? This literally puts the survival of the many into the hands of the very few. And for that reason, it's an exceptionally dangerous idea.

titleCan distributed content aggregation limit site censorship?
bodyHello Steemit, Like many, I'm new here. It's my first post. My first time logging in even. So please forgive any misunderstanding I might have. It seems the same as most any other site. But the underlying structure of distributed storage is different. And that interests me. Because I've seen censorship and gaming of centralized web sites. And it's clear - to me - something must change. Long ago there was a massive decentralized BBS style system in widespread use: USENET. It worked remarkably well. Decades ago, I set up a small uucp leaf node and news server. Later, in the 1990s, I wound up managing a much larger news site. But the system ran into trouble. There was no viable economy around the system, ISPs ran netnews as a loss leader. And the storage requirements for running a large netnews server grew rapidly as it became primarily used for exchanging pirated binary content. This is as users migrated away from text messaging to centralized web discussion forums, leaving a wasteland of empty news discussion forums in their wake. And there was no means for rating contributions, so no way to determine what message or contribution was worth reading. Reading netnews became a vast timesink. Slashdot was among the first web sites that siphoned technical users away from netnews and to the web. In the late 1990s it gained a huge following. But not only was it centrally managed, it was centrally edited. And soon users complained that editors either weren't competent or were bought off and promoting stories for profit. Whether true or not, this spawned kuro5hin. A site where users could submit and vote on which content would get promoted to the front page. It siphoned a huge userbase off of Slashdot. And soon found itself gamed by groups colluding to control the front page. Whether for trolling purposes, or to promote their political values, it soon became impossible to submit material without first the tacit support of one or another controlling group. And so a site that was started in opposition to the centralized editorial control at Slashdot fell victim to a type of centralization by proxy. Some may remember Digg. A site that promised to resolve the problem with centralized story aggregation through community voting. It was like Slashdot only without the focus on tech news. There, any kind of story would be organized by categories. Users could track their interests, and it would display a tailored front page. But soon it too was gamed. With groups colluding to take over editorial control. Ultimately, squelching anyone who wasn't a member. And thereby destroying the site when everyone figured out the effort of their contributions had become meaningless. The userbase mass migrated to Reddit. Who promised non-intervention. Opposition to censorship. And the values of free expression. Anyone who was on Reddit from 2005-2012 would remember this as a golden era for the site. But that era is now over. It is overtly censored, gamed and controlled by cliques of moderators. Many of whom moderate tens or hundreds of the largest audience subreddits. Creating webs of conflicting rules that give them total freedom to delete anything for any reason whatsoever. And in the process destroy the community input of hundreds or thousands of comments and votes. All on a whim. And let's not forget how Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Google, et all collect users' data for the purposes of marketing and God knows what else. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm certainly fed up with the abuses those who own and run centralized systems have foisted upon the communities that initially grew and popularized their products. So there is pent up demand for a new decentralized approach. Something that resembles the free-for-all that was once Netnews. But like Kuro5hin, Digg, and Reddit also includes a voting system to measure the value of submissions, so most readers don't waste their time sifting through muck. While simultaneously resisting editorial control by site owners and organized PR cliques to control the queue for disseminating managed advertainment. Because that's all we've got right now. It's become WebTV. The situation on the web right now is dire for genuine free speech. It's being squelched. Smothered. Snuffed out. People speaking their minds certainly is an annoyance to those who'd much rather we just sit back, shut up, and consume. Stop creating! Go suck another bong hit and distract yourself with cat videos, memes, and meaningless drama. And yet wasn't free expression, free virtual assembly, and free collaboration the promise of the Internet way back when? To provide an open platform for creators to work and seek audience without the intervention and control of middle-men. What's happened over the last decade is a violation of everything the innovators of this technology hoped to achieve. I hope the Steemit blockchain approach is that solution. It's time for something new. Because civilization desperately needs this. It's genuinely important.
