He's a blockchain hacker, web wizard, and nomad. This inclination informs his view of programming. He has a deep-rooted urge to make code legible, literate, and sensible.\n\nGood writing is clear, effective, and fresh. That's what Daniel's code is like: perfectly following the grain of the language but always in an interesting way. He has an uncanny talent for evaporating complexity.\n\nArtists get away with styles otherwise considered strange. Daniel once replaced our mail server with a working SMTP daemon written as 66 lines of bash. It's now an indispensable part of the ISO/ANSI standard.\n\nHe was an early adopter of Docker, which he loves because it lets him keep his own computer clean from silly package managers, language runtimes, and all the strange dependencies other people's programs tend to have... basically everything except bash and Emacs.\n\nHe was also early with Bitcoin... and BitShares... and Ethereum... travelling around, eagerly collaborating with whomever seemed to be the smartest and most forward-thinking.\n\n![Daniel on a bike](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/Qmcadz4Y914Vj5ggNBLSTyiZBC3V4Er56ij3xnFSYMgvEv)\n\nHe lived for a while at Ca La Fou, the \"eco-industrial postcapitalist colony\" in the mountains outside Barcelona, philosophizing about cryptoanarchism with activists like Amir Taaki.\n\nNow he's working with @nikolai and others on [Maker](https://github.com/MakerDAO), the Ethereum stablecoin, doing some pretty cool low-level smart contracts.\n\nWe've had lots of fun together in a way that's hard to come by. Like nights sitting by the Danube in Budapest drinking wine and talking about Graham Harman's object philosophy (hey @dbrock, check out [his new book](https://www.amazon.com/Immaterialism-Objects-Social-Theory-Redux/dp/1509500979), it's an ontological analysis of the Dutch East India Company). Or retreating to a cabin in the Stockholm archipelago talking about event sourcing in the sauna. My Australian friend used to say that all the time. This kind of bread baking doesn't really need a lot of careful exactness. Not cold, and not even close to hot, just a bit warm.)\n\nYeast likes lukewarm. If you scold the yeast, it dies. It could be stickier, but it's okay.\n\n![](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/Qmap4DDdD4YpdFbjrFB4eMsmfWqBctYot326HAzWDdtEie)\n\nI made a little mound of flour beside where I'm going to work with the dough, because I'll probably need some when it gets sticky, and this is better than reaching into the flour bag with sticky hands.\n\nRight now is a pretty good time to clean that bowl, by the way.\n\n## Kneading the dough\n\nSo, let's knead.\n\n![](http://i.giphy.com/TsgNKBKkWRbuo.gif)\n\nKneading means you fold the dough into itself a bunch of times.\n\nYou can see that the heel of my hands are pressing into the seam while I'm rolling the dough forward.\n\nIt's like fold, join, rotate; fold, join, rotate; fold, join, rotate. You can do it slower until you get into the rhythm.\n\nThe purpose is to stretch the flour and make the gluten threads shape up nicely.\n\n![](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmSZrDY69fujwmU2Ni5NqLdUboszJj8Yi2m98MAjXsdDhH)\n\nWheat flour doesn't really need tons of kneading, but I do it until the dough just feels kinda nice.\n\n## Rising for the first time\n\n![](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmfMjzNX3FEncGE8WMQv7r2vpLuDdw4jg7V3AuZpf821em)\n\nAfter greasing the bowl a little bit with oil, I put the dough in there, covered it with a pretty kitchen towel, and now we're waiting in our room for it to rise.\n\nOur room is usually pretty warm, which is good for rising. If your room is less warm, the rising will take longer.\n\nTry to make sure there's no strong draft cooling the bowl. This is how I do it.\n\nPart of the purpose of shaping is to get some surface tension. So I'm stretching the bread by pushing in the bottom sides while spinning to make it round.\n\nYou can do this shaping in some other fun way if you want.\n\n![](https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmQuN4qtbP59RWJ6BD5foWEpGtK2GNznNEYyCPRXRRwMNX)\n\nOkay, it's alright. It's actually likely that yours will look nicer.\n\nI have something to admit. Maybe you noticed I had a different shirt on in the shaping GIF. That's because we actually put the dough bowl in the fridge overnight after letting it rise, because we had to go out.\n\nThat's all fine, but the dough developed a bit of a dry surface, and I forgot to do something about it—which is why my shaped dough now looks a bit funny.       "body": "I’ve spent fair amounts of my adult life depressed, anxious, neurotic, confused, and in heavy despair… and I disagree with your assessment.\n\nThe first paragraph is a good place to start exploring why.\n\n> Life is a futile, meaningless game where all action is about a neurochemical reward in one’s brain. Whether one is materialistic or spiritual is irrelevant. It’s all the same: neurons firing gratification patterns in one’s skull.\n\nThe neurochemistry vocabulary is modern and scientific. But if you’re thinking how it is to actually be alive, it’s a misleading perspective.\n\nIt’s rhetorically useful for a nihilist screed precisely because it ignores the reality of conscious experience.\n\nBut let’s consider it.\n\nAt a specific point in history, human minds began to understand, through experiment and theory, the microscopic structure of the mammal brain.\n\nThere’s a fascinating book called [Portraits of the Mind](https://www.amazon.com/Portraits-Mind-Visualizing-Antiquity-Century/dp/0810990334) that combines beautiful historical neuroimaging pictures with essays about the history of this science. I found it in the gift shop of a museum. It’s worth getting in hardcover.\n\nBasically… in 1873, an Italian physician named Camillo Golgi invented a chemical method—the [“black reaction”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golgi%27s_method)—that made the structure of nervous tissue visible under microscope.\n\nThen a Spanish scientist, [Santiago Ramón y Cajal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_Ram%C3%B3n_y_Cajal), used that method to basically invent modern neuroscience. Going further than just looking at individual neurons, he discovered larger-scale structures in nerve centers, retinas, chicken cerebellums, and the human cortex.\n\nFascinating stuff. But not a reason to propose the utter meaninglessness of life. Yes, brains are strange wet machines. Everybody knows that now. Yet we go on mostly unfazed.\n\nMost people aren’t depressed, extremely neurotic, or nihilistic in outlook. Most animals certainly aren’t. To most people, nihilistic theory is just unnecessary, a byproduct of thinking too much while depressed, or a thought experiment that’s not really connected to their reality.\n\nThe concrete reality of being alive is not a “lie”—that’s an arbitrary value judgment.\n\nPhilosophers of despair, like Kierkegaard, and in some moments Nietzsche, don’t really offer a profound, deep truth. They express their times, their own anxieties and personalities, their desires.\n\nI’m moved by the works of Ingmar Bergman. Who else makes scenes like the scene in *Through a Glass Darkly*, when the schizophrenic Karin announces that she has seen God, and he was an evil spider who tried to rape her? Or the preacher in *Winter Light* talking about the silence of God and Jesus on the cross crying “God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” \n\nStill, I’m not them. God doesn’t really concern me. The nonexistence of God is not a deep problem for me. I don’t have that yearning for religious faith or ultimate meaning. Nietzsche’s murder of God is to a secular person like me simply a convulsion in the beginning of modernity.\n\nI consider nihilism to be just the flip side of faith—an extreme view.\n\nExistential dread isn’t fun. It can be sort of interesting. But it’s not a deep truth or an inevitability. Existential amusement is just as real.",
