(Courtesy of Alliance Defending Freedom)\n\n\n\nSchool administrators were not infringing on a student’s constitutional rights when they ordered him to remove a shirt that said “There are only two genders,” a district judge ruled on June 17.\n\nA Massachusetts middle-schooler said the order violated his First Amendment rights to free speech and his Fourteenth Amendment rights to due process, but U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani said the violations have not been proven.\n\nThe school “permissibly concluded that the Shirt invades the rights of others,” Talwani, an Obama appointee, said.\n\nSchools can ban speech that is in “collision with the rights of others to be secure and be let alone,” Talwani said, quoting from the 1969 ruling in Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. School Dist.\n\nThat means the administrators appropriately exercised their discretion when concluding the statement “may communicate that only two gender identities–male and female are valid, and any others are invalid or nonexistent, and to conclude that students who identify differently, whether they do so openly or not, have a right to attend school without being confronted by messages attacking their identities,” she added.\n\nTalwani’s ruling rejected a request from the boy for a temporary restraining order that would have stopped administrators from prohibiting the student from wearing the shirt at John T. Nicholas Middle School.\n\nThe case has not been thrown out and Talwani could ultimately rule in the boy’s favor.\n\nLawyers for the boy did not respond to requests for comment. Lawyers for the defendants, which include acting principal Heather Tucker and Middleborough Public Schools Superintendent Carolyn Lyons, did not return an inquiry.\n\nFirst Amendment expert Eugene Volokh said the ruling does not appear to be consistent with the Tinker ruling, which held that school officials in Iowa illegally ordered students to remove armbands amid protests against the Vietnam War. Lawyer Hans Bader, who is not involved in the case, said the ruling was wrong, noting that previous cases have upheld students’ rights to convey messages “as long as they weren’t vulgar or likely to cause a disruption,” including a ruling in favor of wearing a shirt that said, “Be Happy, Not Gay.”\n\n“The judge suggested that the T-shirt interfered with other students’ ‘right to attend school without being confronted by messages attacking their identities,'” Bader said. “But other courts have refused to recognize a right to attend school without being confronted by messages attacking one’s identity, when the messages don’t disrupt school, and don’t involve ‘independently tortious speech like libel, slander or intentional infliction of emotional distress.’”\n\nBackground on Case\nThe middle school student, 12, whose name has not been made public, wore the shirt to school on March 21.\n\nTucker removed the boy from class and said other students had complained about the shirt. Tucker said the student could remove the shirt or they could go to another room to discuss the matter.\n\nIn the other room, joined by a school counselor, the student asked what the problem was. Tucker reiterated the removal order but the student said he could not in good conscience remove the shirt. Tucker then called the boy’s father, who came to pick him up.\n\nThe following day, the father emailed Lyons to inquire “why my son was removed from class and ultimately missed out on a day of class instruction.”\n\nLyons said she supported what she termed dress code enforcement. We can, therefore, classify polymers based on the following considerations.\n\n**Classification of Polymers Based on the Source of Availability**\n\nThere are three types of classification under this category, namely, Natural, Synthetic, and Semi-synthetic Polymers.\n\nNatural Polymers:                  They occur naturally and are found in plants and animals.\n         \t\t                                Examples: starch, protein, cellulose.\n\nSemi-synthetic Polymers:  They are derived from naturally occurring polymers and undergo further chemical \n                                                        modification.\n                                                        Examples: silicones, and cellulose derivatives.\nSynthetic Polymers:               These are man-made polymers. Plastic is the most common and widely used synthetic \n                                                         polymer.\n                                                          Examples: polyethylene, synthetic rubbers, nylon, etc\n\n**Classification of Polymers based on the Structure of the Monomer Chain**\n\nThis category has the following classifications:\n\nLinear Polymers:                      The structure of polymers containing long and straight chains falls into this category.\n                                                          Example: PVC.\n\nBranched-chain Polymers:   When linear chains of a polymer form branches, then, such polymers are categorized as \n                                                           branched-chain polymers.\n                                                           Example: low-density polymers.\n\nCross-linked Polymers:          They are composed of bifunctional and trifunctional monomers. These monomers can bond to each other on each side, potentially forever.\nSo this reaction of combining these monomers to form long chains or three-dimensional networks is known as polymerization. Broadly polymerization can be classified into two categories, \n\n\n**Addition Polymerization**\n\nThis is also called chain growth polymerization. As the name suggests addition polymers form when an addition reaction occurs. The repeating monomers form a linear or branch structure depending on the type of monomer. During additional polymerization, the monomers rearrange themselves to form a new structure. But there is no loss of an atom or a molecule. Again there are four types of addition polymerizations which are \n\n\tFree Radical Polymerization: \n\tCationic polymerization: \n\tAnionic Vinyl Polymerization\n\tCoordination Polymerization \n\n**Condensation Polymerization**\n\nThis is also called step-growth polymerization. Condensation polymers form from the step of growth polymerization. Here when molecules of monomers react to form a bond they replace certain molecules. These molecules are the by-product of the reaction. In most cases, this by-product is a water molecule.\nThe type of polymers that result from condensation polymerization depends on the monomers. If the monomer has only one reactive group, the polymers that form have low molecular weight. When monomers have two reactive end groups we get linear polymers. And monomers with higher than two reactive groups result in a polymer with a three-dimensional network.\nPolyester and nylon are two common condensation polymers. Even Proteins and Carbohydrates are a result of condensation polymerization.\n\n**Classification Based on Monomers**\n\n**Homopolymer**\n\n A homopolymer is a type of polymer that is made from identical monomers. Every basic unit of the polymer is similar to each other. A homopolymer is produced by the polymerization of the same type of monomers.\n\n**Heteropolymer or co-polymer**\n\nA heteropolymer is a type of polymer that is made of two or more different types of monomers. If two monomers are involved in the polymerization process, the end product is called a copolymer. The copolymer is a type of heteropolymer. There are several types of copolymers.\n\tAlternating Copolymers\n\tRandom Copolymers\n\tBlock Copolymers\n\tGraft Copolymers\n\n**Classification Based on Molecular Forces**\n\n**Thermoplastics**\n\nThermoplastics may take on amorphous or crystalline structures. In thermoplastics, the long chain molecules exist in the form of linear bonding but are also bonded to each other by secondary Van Der Waals forces (secondary bonds).\nAt a high enough heat, the excitation of the molecular chains is enough to overcome this binding force and they are free to move over one another thereby creating a viscous liquid. The secondary bonds can be envisaged to have melted. The glass transition (Tg) temperature can be envisaged as the temperature at which the secondary bonds melt.\nWhen the polymer is cooled the secondary forces once again dominate and the molecular chains revert back to a restricted state. This means that thermoplastics can be melted and remelted allowing them to be easily recycled.\n\n**Thermosetting**\n\nIn thermosetting plastics, the long-chain molecules exist in an amorphous network with cross-linked bonding. This means that the long molecular chains are attached to each other by covalent bonds. The formation of these cross-links is known as curing.\nCross-linking sets the molecular chains in place and therefore means that a thermosetting plastic cannot be remelted but will instead decompose upon being heated to a temperature above the Tg.\nCross-linking inhibits molecular arrangement into an ordered crystalline structure meaning that thermosetting polymers only exist in the amorphous state.\n\n**Elastomers**\n\nIn elastomers, long molecular chains exist in the form of amorphous linear bonding with occasional cross-linking.\nAt room temperature the level of excitation of the chains has already overcome the secondary Van Der Waals bonds, however, the cross-links that exist in the structure act to revert the elastomer back to its original form following deformation.",
