      "body": "단오 풍정\n\n 봄꽃이 지고 푸르른 새 잎이 눈부시게 싱그러운 음력 5월 5일은 농경시대로부터 즐겨온 단오절이다. 세시풍속으로 1년 24절기로 구분하여 설날, 추석절과 더불어 큰 명절로 지내 왔다. 음양철학 상 기수(홀수)가 겹쳐서 양기가 왕성한 날이 되어 다가올 여름의 질병과 재앙을 방지하고 인생에 생기와 활력을 줄 때라고 여겼다. 이 날 만큼은 농사 일을 접고 모두 모여 새 옷을 입고, 먹고, 마신다. 남자들은 힘 겨루기 씨름대회가 열리고 여인네들은 창포 삶은 물에 머리 감고 뒤 울 안에 그네를 매어 그네뛰기를 하며 즐겼다. 유교 사회였던 한국, 일본, 중국 등은 나라마다 고유의 전통이 있었지만 단오는 동양권 공통의 큰 축제다.\n\n 1930년대 광화문(세종로) 동아일보사 뒤의 우리 집에서 골목을 돌아 나오면 청계천이 흘렀다. 멀리 인왕산, 삼각산, 북한산의 계곡물이 모여 서울의 복판을 가로질러 큰 바위를 휘돌아가며 구비치는 것이 마치 시골 마을 개울 가의 운치처럼 평화로움이 있었다.\n\n 당시 우리 집에는 수도 시설이 없고 마당 한 쪽에 펌프가 있었다. 지금 젊은 세대는 상상도 할 수 없는 일이지만 서울 한복판임에도 그 때는 그랬다. 나는 낮 한 때 행랑어멈이 빨래하러 광주리 이고 청계천으로 나가면 치맛자락 붙잡고 졸졸 따라 나섰다. 옆에서 빨래 방망이 두드리는 소리에 물장구 치며 발 담그고 놀던 유일한 놀이터였다. 지금도 눈에 선하다. 바위에 척척 걸쳐 놓은 광목 호청이 햇빛에 흰색으로 반사되던 그 눈부심이 그리워진다.\n\n\n 어머님은 나의 단오빔으로 작년에 입던 숙고사 노란 저고리, 분홍 치마를 봄부터 정성껏 홍두깨로 반듯하게 두들겨 펴 다려 만들어 주셨다. 어린 마음에 얼마나 설렜는지 밤에도 잠자리 옆에 개 놓고야 잠이 들었다. 새 옷을 입을라치면 늘 다소곳이 행동거지를 조신하게 해야 한다. 그래서 늘 어머님께 꾸중 들으면서도 즐거웠다. 나는 하나뿐인 고명딸로 부모님의 사랑을 듬뿍 받은 것 같다.\n\n\n 떡으로는 증편(술떡)을 만드셨다. 멥쌀가루를 막걸리에 반죽하여 치대어 놓았다가 발효시키고 넓은 채반에 보를 깔고 손 두 개만큼 펼치고 적당하게 가루 위에 석이버섯을 가늘게 썰어 잎이라 하고 대추를 꽃이라 하며 잣으로 무늬 놓아 가마솥에서 푹신하게 쪄 낸다. 익어도 그대로 꽃밭같이 무늬가 선명하게 박혀 있다. 즐겁게 일하시는 어머니의 모습을 바라보는 것도 재미있었다. 손님 오시는 날에는 쑥떡, 어채, 준치만두, 앵두화채 등 단오절 잔칫상이 푸짐했다. 증편은 아버님이 좋아하셨고 후에 남편도 좋아했는데 생각해보니 막걸리가 들어가서 그런 것 같다. 요즘은 떡 문화가 발달되어 어느 때나 골라 먹을 수 있지만 그 절기에 해 먹는 떡이 별미와 운치가 있지 않을까 생각해 본다.\n\n 단오절에 빼놓을 수 없는 풍경은 창포 잎을 삶아서 머리 감는 일이다. 신윤복 그림 <단오풍정>에 보면 계곡 물가에서 뽀얀 두 어깨를 내놓고 나무 그늘에서 신록처럼 신선하게 윤기 흐르는 긴 머리채를 잡고 머리를 매만지는 요염한 그 자태는 정말 아름답다. 무엇인가 먹거리를 이고 오는 여인, 그네 뛰느라 바람에 치마가 휘날려서 속곳이 보일 듯 말 듯 하는 처녀, 그 여인들을 바위 틈에서 숨어 훔쳐보는 동자스님들을 보면 단오절의 흥과 정취가 느껴진다. 그 시대에는 사대부 집안 여인이나 여염집 아낙들은 내외법이 있어 집 밖 출입을 잘 하지 않았다. 하지만 이 날은 여인들도 마음 놓고 청계천, 북쪽의 삼청공원, 남쪽으로는 남한산성의 냇가에서 물놀이를 즐겼다.\n\n 어머님은 긴 머리를 창포 잎으로 감으시면 전통 조선 여인 모습으로 쪽을 찌고 은비녀를 꽂고 계셨다. 한복을 입으시면 갸름하고 단아한 얼굴이 너무나 잘 어울리고 아름다우셨다. 나도 커서 저렇게 예쁘게 빗어야지 했다. 그런데 초등학교에 입학하고는 짧은 단발머리를 했다. 그 당시 개화바람이 불어 처녀들은 단발머리가 유행하였고 어머니들도 신여성이라고 멋있게 빗어 올렸다. 나는 한참을 설득하여 중학교 입학식 때는 어머니도 머리를 자르고 예쁘게 틀어 올리고 오셨다.\n\n 시모님은 89세에 돌아가실 때까지 쪽을 지고 사셨다. 단오절이면 창포물로 늘 머리를 감아드렸다. 아침마다 언제부터인가 동백기름을 구할 수 없어 베이비 오일을 바르시고 가르마를 코 끝에서부터 반듯하게 올리시며 단정하게 몸단장을 하셨다. 그 분이 80년간 매일 가르마 타신 분홍빛 상아 비치개가 연필 길이만 하던 것이 반으로 닳아버렸다. 나에게는 시모님이 물려주신 은비녀, 옥비녀가 있다. 가끔 꺼내보며 한 번 나도 머리 길러 옛 조신한 조선 여인이 되어 멋부려 볼까 하는 유혹을 떨쳐버릴 수가 없다. 두 어머님 곁에서 반세기 동안 단옷날 어김없이 창포물에 머리를 감아서 그랬던가 나의 머리숱과 결이 세월의 풍상으로 백발이 되었지만 그냥 그대로 아직 볼만한 것은 두 분과의 세월의 무게가 아닌가 생각한다.\n\n\n 그리고 작년 단오절에 못 다 보낸 전통 부채에 예쁜 들꽃을 올려 한껏 멋을 부려 보내야지. 시원한 바람과 꽃 향기에 취해 기뻐하는 벗님들의 모습이 눈 앞에 어른거린다.",

      "body": "한옥은 나의 고향\n\n 추석이 지나고 썰렁한 가을바람이 옷깃에 스며들 때면 어머님은 나에게 낙엽 진 단풍잎과 은행잎을 주워오라 하셨다. \n\n1930년대 지금은 허물어진 중앙청 가로수는 은행나무였고 세종로 거리는 어른 손바닥만큼 넓적한 푸르른 플라타너스가 심어져 있었다. 방과 후 가회동에 사는 친구와 삼청공원으로 가서 단풍잎을 주워오곤 했다. 며칠 동안 책갈피에 반듯하게 끼워 화려한 오색 단풍잎이 납작해지면 자랑스레 어머님께 보여 드렸다.\n\n광화문통(신문로 1가) 우리 동네는 초가 지붕이 태반이고 큰 길가에 이층 양옥이 몇 집 밖에 없었다. 우리 집은 서민이 사는 검이불루, 즉 검소하지만 누추해 보이지 않는 소박한 모양새를 갖춘 한옥 마을에 있었다.\n\n다가 오는 겨울 추위에 대비해서 연중행사로 어머님은 행랑에 사는 아저씨 내외와 문짝들을 떼어내어 일 년 묵은 먼지를 닦아내고 새하얀 한지로 말끔히 도배를 하셨다. 방마다 안 쪽 문과 덧문짝들이 달려 있으니 앞뜰과 뒷마당에 쭉 늘어 놓은 문짝들이 저마다 청명한 햇살을 받아 솔솔 가을바람과 밀고 당기는 팽팽한 기 싸움을 하고 있었다. 하루 동안 말린 문짝이 제자리에 들어 가면 어머님은 내가 말린 단풍잎과 은행잎을 가지고 오라 하시며 그 단풍잎으로 문짝에다 아기자기 문양을 장식하시고는 “아가, 예쁘지.” 하고 흐뭇하게 바라보셨다. 석양 빛에 물들어 화사해진 단풍잎을 바라 보시던 어머님의 눈빛은 지금도 기억이 난다.\n\n당시 어수선한 일제의 감시 하에 아버님은 늘 집을 떠나 계시는 때가 많았다. 팔도의 친구분을 찾아 몸을 피하시면서도 우리들을 위해 그 지방 특산물을 인편에 챙겨 따뜻한 사랑 담아 보내셨다. 어느 해인가는 내가 근시라고 동태 눈 말린 것을, 어떤 때는 메뚜기 볶은 것을 한 푸대 보내셔서 겨우내 간식거리가 되기도 했다.\n\n학교에 다녀오니 문풍지를 마무리하시는 어머님 곁에서 새 창호지 바른 것을 남동생이 손으로 퉁기며 찢어 놓아 혼나고 있었다. 치기 어린 이 장난은 한동안 계속되었다.\n\n문창살 작업이 끝나면 벽지 바르는 일이 있고 다음은 방바닥 도배를 한다. 처음에 초배지를 바르는데 반듯하게 다져진 진흙 바닥에 초배지 두 겹을 바르고 며칠을 말린 후 기름 먹인 샛노란 장판지를 바른다. 이 작업은 도배장이 아저씨가 와서 도와주지만 끝나고 나면 잠시 앉을 틈 없이 어머님은 매일 들기름을 묻힌 마른 걸레로 정성스레 반질반질 윤이 나게 길들이며 문지르고 계셨다.\n\n선조들의 지혜로 이뤄진 한옥 민가의 특징은 웅장하지 않고 조촐하다는 것이다. 한지를 바른 창살문은 통풍은 물론 시각적으로 매우 아름다운 운치와 은은한 분위기를 연출해 준다. 한옥의 중심인 굵은 서까래가 육중하게 받치고 있는 대청마루는 그 기품과 질서를 성주신의 기가 흐르는 신성한 공간이라 우리 조상은 믿고 있었다.\n\n추위에 움추렸던 겨울이 지나고 사랑방 뜨락에 매화꽃 순이 뾰족이 올라오고 들썩들썩 땅의 움틈이 있다. 양기의 봄기운을 받아 집안의 문들이 활짝 열리며 봄맞이 하느라 부산해진다. 여름의 햇볕이 열기를 몰고 오면 대청마루에 고운 대발을 쳐 사통팔방 앞뜰 뒷마루 할 것 없이 시원한 바람을 넘나들게 한다. 장대 같은 장맛비가 오는 날은 물기 머금은 한옥 지붕의 기왓장이 촉촉하게 빛나고 차양 없는 처마에서 고르게 떨어지는 빗방울 소리에 숨을 죽이며 귀 기울이고 있었다. 빗물이 섬돌 앞 흙 마당에 작은 물결을 내어 댓돌을 지나 마당 한가운데 꽃밭에 흘러 들어가는 것을 쫓으며 한가운데 우뚝 서 있는 파초, 그 둘레에 봉선화, 백일홍, 옥잠화등 눈을 떼지 못하고 있었다.\n\n사랑방의 동창에도 여름이면 고운 발이 쳐 있어 아버님이 안 계시는 날에는 썰렁하고 고즈넉하게 흐르는 적막 속에서 독서 삼매경으로 나를 인도하였다. 세계문학전집과 푸른색으로 작고 예쁘게 장정된 이와나미 문고의 셰익스피어 전집 등 한쪽 벽의 책장은 어린 날의 마음의 안식처였다. 드높은 가을 하늘을 보며 흰 구름에 실리어 저 끝은 어디일까 하고 미지의 세계에 꿈의 나래를 피우곤 했다.\n\n안방의 아랫목은 어머님의 향기가 그득한 자리다. 별로 담 밖 나들이를 하지 않으셨던 어머님은 당시 드물게 일본 월간지인 <주부의 벗>을 보셨다. 싱거 미싱은 시집 와서 할부로 장만하셔 늘 책 부록을 보시며 바느질이나 뜨개질로 멋지고 예쁜 옷을 만들어 주셨다. 학교에서 돌아오면 구들장에서 올라오는 따뜻한 온기와 놋화로 잿더미 속의 불씨 위에 손을 비비며 추위를 녹였다. 그러나 유난히 춥고 눈도 많이 오는 겨울이 길어 몸이 시리도록 추운 기억들이다.\n\n일설에 따르면 육식을 하는 서양 사람에 비해 채식을 하는 한국 사람이 창자의 길이가 길어 체내 혈액이 대부분 상체에 모여 있다고 한다. 따라서 하체의 체온을 유지하기 위해 따뜻한 바닥에 앉아 생활하는 두한족열 방식에 가장 적합한 것이 바로 온돌이라 한다.\n\n전통적인 온돌의 구들장은 방구들이라고도 한다. 황토를 으깨어 구들 돌이 받치고 있어 아궁이에 불울 지펴 돌을 달구면 뜨거운 열기가 방바닥에 깔린 구들장을 지나면서 오랜 시간 머물게 하는 원리다. 기본적인 구조는 아궁이, 불목, 구들개자리, 구들장, 굴뚝으로 구성되어 있어 우리 선조의 지혜를 엿볼 수 있다. 지금도 몸이 으스스 한기가 도는 겨울이면 온돌의 뜨끈한 구들장에 앉아 오순도순 몸을 녹이던 어린 날의 정겨운 추억이 생각난다.\n\n얼마 전 우리나라의 열 번째 세계문화유산에 안동 하회마을과 경주의 양동마을이 ‘한국의 역사마을’로 등재되었다. 우리의 전통문화유산의 가치를 세계에 알리고 인정받는 것이 기쁘고 향후 우리가 더욱 소중히 가꾸어 나가야 할 과제이다.\n\n                                                       2010. 10. 18",
