bodyThis is such a beautiful article. I recently posted about how fear can sometimes creep in and that is when I know I need to get back into my practice and reconnect. I agree...alone time is great, but meditating or practicing yoga with a community can be so powerful. The unified energy can be life changing. I also think we as humans don't give ourselves enough credit. Instead of being disappointed with our progression, we should be proud of ourselves and love ourselves for all that we have accomplished. Thank you for sharing!

bodyIt's been estimated that we all have 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts a day — many of which are negative. I am terrible at what I do. I'll never find love. I don't deserve to be happy. I can't. But it's not just the thoughts by themselves that do the damage. If left unchallenged, thoughts create beliefs, which then create behaviors. A negative thought like I'm never going to be happy has a terrible way of making us stay unhappy. But we can say "no" to the naysayer. If we turn around and face that thought, we can stop it right in its tracks and strip away its power over us. In fact, there are seven profound ways we can question our own thoughts, each one attacking them from a meaningful angle. The next moment a bad thought pops up to wreak havoc on your plans and confidence, ask these seven questions to disarm it: 1 - Says who? Whenever a negative thought pops into your head, ask it, "Says who?" This question exposes a negative thought for exactly what it is: a doubt that can interrupt your life and harm your sense of self and well-being. 2 - Have I heard someone say this thought before? Ready for a revelation? Your thoughts may not even be your own! So many of the voices in our head are echoes of other people's words. We listened to a parent, spouse, or boss say negative things, and we took them on as our own. If this is the case, let it go. 3 - Do I like this thought? Go ahead and ask yourself, "Is this thought desirable or appealing?" "Does it give me a sense of possibility or joy?" If not, then ask yourself why you are thinking it. The old saying, "If you don't like what you're hearing, you don't have to listen" is the same with a negative thought. 4 - Does this thought make me feel better? Negative thoughts are like an in-house band of hecklers, tearing us down instead of cheering us on. They seep into our psyches, wreaking havoc on plans and dreams. Ask yourself if this thought is making you feel better or worse about yourself. If it doesn't enhance your self-esteem in any way, why are you thinking it? 5 - Does this thought work for me? Is this thought useful or productive for you? With this question, you can take a look at whether or not a thought supports your desires or goals. If you're trying to get in shape, a negative thought like, "I'm never going to get stronger" is not going to do anything. 6 - Am I in control of this thought? Does this thought have any kind of hold or power over you? Or are you in control of it? If not, ask yourself why you would let a thought have the power to control you. Remember, you are the commander of your own thoughts, not the other way around. You're in charge. 7 - Do I want to keep this thought or let it go? This is an especially profound question, as it looks at the worth of a thought for what it is. With this question, you're finding out whether you want to hold on to a thought that serves no useful purpose for your well-being. If it's not doing you any good, it's probably doing you bad. Let it go. It's remarkable how asking these questions every day can be such a powerful tool. If you can turn it into a daily habit, much like brushing your teeth, you may soon find that things have shifted in your own head. You are on the way to eliminating the negative thinking that slows you down. You may find that some questions resonate so deeply they become your favorites, and you turn to them much like you're turning to a good friend or trusted ally.

"body": "It's been estimated that we all have 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts a day — many of which are negative.\n\nI am terrible at what I do. I'll never find love. I don't deserve to be happy. I can't.\n\nBut it's not just the thoughts by themselves that do the damage. If left unchallenged, thoughts create beliefs, which then create behaviors. A negative thought like I'm never going to be happy has a terrible way of making us stay unhappy. But we can say \"no\" to the naysayer.\n\nIf we turn around and face that thought, we can stop it right in its tracks and strip away its power over us. In fact, there are seven profound ways we can question our own thoughts, each one attacking them from a meaningful angle.\n\nThe next moment a bad thought pops up to wreak havoc on your plans and confidence, ask these seven questions to disarm it:\n\n1 - Says who?\n\nWhenever a negative thought pops into your head, ask it, \"Says who?\" This question exposes a negative thought for exactly what it is: a doubt that can interrupt your life and harm your sense of self and well-being.\n\n2 - Have I heard someone say this thought before?\n\nReady for a revelation? Your thoughts may not even be your own! So many of the voices in our head are echoes of other people's words. We listened to a parent, spouse, or boss say negative things, and we took them on as our own. If this is the case, let it go.\n\n3 - Do I like this thought?\n\nGo ahead and ask yourself, \"Is this thought desirable or appealing?\" \"Does it give me a sense of possibility or joy?\" If not, then ask yourself why you are thinking it. The old saying, \"If you don't like what you're hearing, you don't have to listen\" is the same with a negative thought.\n\n4 - Does this thought make me feel better?\n\nNegative thoughts are like an in-house band of hecklers, tearing us down instead of cheering us on. bodyWhat is a spiritual practice? It's an opportunity to connect and commune with yourself and with whatever force (whether you call it God, the Universe, Spirit, or the pages of your journal) guides your life. Many have a spiritual practice without even realizing they do, and for good reason. There's so much beauty in a spiritual practice: They are grounding, they are supportive, they are the foundation for a healthy and conscious life. And yet, like anything, it's all too easy for them to become rote, mechanical, stale. Soon, a spiritual practice can feel like one more "to-do" on an already too long list. But with mindfulness and creativity, it's easy to refresh your practice and your spiritual connection. While there is a long list of ways to recharge your spiritual battery, these are three of my favorites: 1. Find comfort in community. A spiritual practice can often feel like a very solitary experience — you meditate, pray, or take long walks by yourself. And that can be wonderful! But there is great comfort and connection in a spiritual community, too. This doesn't have to be church, though that's a common option. You might also join a drum circle, take a class on intuition, or spend time at a concert with like-minded friends where the music truly moves you. Finding and spending time with a community of people who support and align with your spiritual beliefs is one of the easiest ways to reignite your own spiritual connection — and to give you the accountability that ensures you don't lose that spark again. 2. Take a personal retreat. Sometimes — OK, most times — reconnecting with your spiritual practice simply requires reconnecting with yourself. This can take as much (or as little) time and money as you have to allot to it. Simply carve out some space in your schedule — whether it's one hour or three days — to spend alone, reconnecting with your spiritual practice. Make a light agenda for yourself: Will you pray, meditate, journal, take a long bath, catch up on sleep? All of the above? The purpose of this retreat is to give yourself a dedicated time and space within which to reconnect with yourself and with your spiritual practice, or to try something totally new that might reinvigorate your spiritual connection. By removing yourself from your "everyday," you'll be better equipped to see what's missing and fill your spirit with exactly what it needs to come back to that "everyday" refreshed and renewed. 3. Practice spreading love. When it comes right down to it, a spiritual practice is about remembering love; it's about remembering that we (and every other human on this planet) are love and are loved. And one of the best ways you can remember this is by sharing that love with other people. Of course, you can (and should) spread love to your friends and family — you might send a "thinking of you" note in the mail or leave an "I love you" on the bathroom mirror for your partner — but almost more importantly, you can recharge your own spiritual battery by starting a practice of spreading love to even those you don't know. Send love to the person who cuts you off on the freeway. Send love to the receptionist at your doctor's office. Send love to the stranger in front of you at the coffee shop. You might actually tell this person of the love you're sharing with them, or you might send it through your heart. Either way, it will reach its designated destination — and it will reinvigorate your own connection to love and spirit. You can practice spreading this love to yourself, too. Whenever you find yourself feeling down, practice reminding yourself that you are love and you are loved, and open up to receiving all the love that is undoubtedly being sent your way, too. There is no greater spiritual practice than that. Recharging your spiritual battery doesn't have to be hard; you simply need to make the decision to reconnect and take one step in that direction. I hope the tips above will help you get back on your spiritual path.

bodyWhen it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that—a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back. With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals. Self-Control Secret #1 - Meditate Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason. Self-Control Secret #2 - Eat File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance. Self-Control Secret #3 - Exercise Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back. Self-Control Secret #4 - Sleep When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep—every night—is one of the best moves you can make. Self-Control Secret #5 - Ride the Wave Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over. Self-Control Secret #6 - Forgive Yourself A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future. Putting These Strategies to Work The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.
