      "body": "I think there are some issues with the system overall. I wrote a blog post a little while ago talking about cryptocurrencies and the systematic flaws I personally have noticed. I also brought up what I see to be an issue on here, the fact that someone can effectively use their economic influence to \"buy\" power on here. Though I think the overall system is a great idea, I don't know how far we can get in another system where the richest hold the majority of the power and the content we see. After all, this is something we talk about every day in real life (people buying newspapers and controlling the content, large companies manipulating what they want us to see, etc). Ça, c'est la Place du Capitole au milieu de la ville. Toulouse n'est pas comme Paris -- C'est une atmosphère totalement différente. Des choses que j'ai remarqué:\n\n- Le temps fait plus beau que Paris. J'ai vu les deux villes en été. Paris faisait froid et il pleuvait, mais Toulouse faisait beau. C'est probablement la raison que les Toulousains sont plus sympa.\n- Les routes sont bordées des charrettes. Le peuple vend du jus pressé, et le jus est encore frais. Au capitole, dans la place, il y a un marché en plein air. Je voulais faire des achats, mais ils n’acceptent pas les cartes de crédit et je n’ai pas d’Euro.\n- Toulouse a de la très bonne nourriture. Les restaurants ne sont pas comme les États Unies — légèrement moins propre mais la nourriture est la meilleur. Mon plat préféré est des galettes — comme des crêpes mais sans gluten.\n\nMerci beaucoup d’avoir lu ma français terrible. I was there for about ten days, and I found super cheap ways to get around and places to stay:\n* Gett and MyTaxi provide a certain number of free rides and credits to new users. I got multiple free rides worth $5 around town on Gett and a $10 ride on MyTaxi. The best thing is the drivers still get paid\n* London's bus service travels everywhere, accepts Apple Pay, and costs only about 1GBP per trip--It's super efficient and cheap as buses get priority\n* Hostels are a great way to save money on lodging in London. There are plenty of hostels with private rooms that are as nice as some hotels. You can get these for under 50GBP a night, a steal compared to the expensive city costs\n* Go shopping at the grocery stores for food that you can prepare in your hostel for only a few GBP for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Here's some stuff I learned when I was there:\n\n- The name is believed to come from a period of revitalization and new growth in spring. Many people see this to be symbolic for the nature of Harpa's construction, as as one point it was maybe the only building being built during the economic recession in Iceland.\n- It was originally destined to be part of a massive World Trade Center complex, but when that failed during the recession, lots of government money went to Harpa to make sure it actually got finished. \n- Now, the whole bay/harbor area surrounding Harpa is under construction and the city of Reykjavik is alive with so many cranes all over again as if nothing ever happened.\n\nThanks for checking out my post. The basic issues I focus on are power consumption, centralization, accessibility, and wealth distribution. This is all my opinion, and I understand the benefits of such technologies too, though this is not the article to discuss those.*\n\nWhen the idea of Bitcoin and the blockchain first came up, developers promised a completely decentralized payment system that would empower the average person and take power away from traditional financial institutions, giving people more control over their own money. It was believed that this new technology would circumvent banks and government regulation. How has this worked out though?\n\n#### Bitcoin’s many flaws\n\n* One of the most well-known early implementations of bitcoin was as a payment system for illegal substances, guns, and bounties. This seemed to let people circumvent traditional payment control, but it was mostly shut down.\n* The Bitcoin blockchain is public, so even though wallet numbers are not directly associated with a person, transactions can be tracked back to exchanges and eventually people. This means there’s not the anonymity that people thought there was.\n* A limited number of exchanges control Bitcoin purchases. Then, these projects seem to promote easier transactions and access for the “unbanked”. What they don’t realize is that to obtain cryptocurrencies, people have to go through an exchange that verifies their identity and tax ID numbers and wires money from their bank account. It’s not as easy as it could be.\n\n#### How about other cryptocurrencies?\n\nI’m not going to go into the same level of detail for alt coins, but since alt coins do not have the same exposure as Bitcoin, it can be estimated that there are way fewer account holders and even fewer active accounts. A very small number of people in the world are feeling the effect of the cryptocurrency boom. From the outside it may look promising to many people, but in reality very few people are benefitting from this boom. This is effectively creating a new 1%, adding to the current 1%, but since the majority of people in the world cannot easily buy into this craze or cannot run the risk of losing money, they are left out. \n\n#### What about Steem?\n\nFrom my initial perspective, the Steem network seems like it rewards people for posting high-quality content. Steem users all have the power to upvote posts that can earn the initial author and themselves a percentage of the rewards. This earns authors and curators Steem Power, a form of currency they can use for real economic gain and to improve the quality of the network by upvoting other authors and curators. \n\n> People can effectively “buy” influence and sway on the network.\n\nIn reality, the top 1% of Steem Power holders control over 80% of the Steem Power on the network. Many of these top accounts actually use the Steem Power for the greater good, upvoting less-recognized posts to encourage the authors to continue with high-quality content. These account holders even promised last year to start distributing a large percentage of their Steem Power. This seems like a good thing, but it still means a wide majority of power is vested in the hands of a few. \n\nOn the Steem network, certain community members can effectively control what you see and are influenced by. Hundreds of upvotes on a post by normal accounts are outranked by a single account with more Steem Power. Instead of the most popular posts in a democratic system getting the most gains, it is the posts that are upvoted by people with the most Steem Power. But I wrote this to point out what I see to be issues in the Cryptocurrency community as a whole. For now, though, I wanted to call attention to the fact that cryptocurrency and the blockchain do not seem to be empowering the people that they were intended to help.
