bodyBritish couple convicted of trying to force daughter to marry in Bangladesh Thomson Reuters Foundation Reuters P![Leeds_Crown_Court_001.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmdZt3CTgiYpVTrKh6fUmnaSFe551EFWbRiy9YbXs8GrsU) A couple who duped their daughter into travelling to Bangladesh to marry her cousin and threatened to "chop her up" when she refused were found guilty of forced marriage on Tuesday, the second conviction in Britain within a week. Campaigners said they hoped the convictions, among the first under a law introduced in 2014, would send a "strong message" to deter families from forcing their children to marry and encourage more victims to seek help. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the British teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, thought she was going to Bangladesh in 2016 with her family for a holiday. She ended up in a remote village where she was told she would be married. When she refused, her father threatened to slit her throat and "chop her up" in 18 seconds - one for every year of her life - the CPS said. With the help of her younger sisters, the woman was able to contact her boyfriend in Britain, who then alerted police. She was rescued within days and the marriage did not go ahead. "This victim was cruelly and deliberately misled by her parents, who were determined to take her to Bangladesh for a marriage she did not want," said Michael Quinn, a senior prosecutor. Britain banned forced marriage in 2014. The maximum penalty is seven years. The government's Forced Marriage Unit received reports of nearly 2,000 possible cases last year, many involving girls from South Asian backgrounds. But campaigners say the figure is just the tip of the iceberg. Last week, a mother who tricked her 13-year- old daughter into travelling to Pakistan to marry an older man was jailed for four and a half years, becoming the first person in England to be convicted of forced marriage. "It is positive to see a second forced marriage conviction so soon after the first successful conviction of this type in the UK," said Diana Nammi, director of the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation (IKWRO), which supports victims of forced marriage. IKWRO said there were more than 3,500 reports of forced marriages made to police between 2014 and 2016. Karma Nirvana, another support group, said it hoped there would be more convictions given that many victims of forced marriage were children. "What I'm hoping is that it will give confidence to the prosecution and to the police to pursue these cases so we can continue this strong message," said Natasha Rattu, a lawyer at Karma Nirvana. Rattu said she hopes the convictions will also encourage victims to speak out. "It sends a message out to victims of this abuse that if you go to seek help, help will be available," she said. The couple will be sentenced on June 18. by: bdnews24

bodyDeath toll rises as war on drugs rolls into 11th day ![Magura-Crossfire.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmTwnePy9K4swHNU8fENZoVV2c3eEXPUjUnUQBufaoDzto) At least 11 more people, including three in Dhaka, have died overnight in security forces’ anti-drug campaign amid criticism from rights groups and rival political parties. The crackdown rolled into the 11th day since the prime minister announced war on drug, bringing the number of “shootout deaths” to 114. Law-enforcement agencies claimed the suspects engaged in ‘gun battles’ in seven districts from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Of the dead, one was killed in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Cumilla, Narail and Chuadanga each in an alleged shootout with police while three bullet-ridden bodies were recovered from Magura. The security forces have maintained that all of the dead were involved in drug trafficking, and they had no alternative but to kill drug suspects who allegedly resisted arrest. But human-rights organisations have raised questions over these ‘extrajudicial killings’. The ruling party’s arch rival BNP hit hard on the government’s war on drugs urging the government to refrain from extrajudicial killings. Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said security forces were conducting an ‘all- out war’ on drugs and will continue to do so until trafficking was eliminated. Hundreds of people have also been arrested in raids across the country, since May 18 after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared a war on drugs. by: bdnews24

bodyAttacker kills three in Liege, dies after gunbattle with police >> Re![belgium.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/Qmd6oQP2SAJugdaz1DpEb2vyp4RkUhWsKLmDT6MVqgqSjW) A man killed two policewomen and a bystander in the Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday before being shot dead in a gunbattle at a school in what prosecutors are treating as a terrorist attack. The man was named by public broadcaster RTBF as a 36-year-old petty criminal who had been let out on day-release from a local prison on Monday. It said investigators were looking into whether he had converted to Islam and been radicalised in jail. A public prosecutor told a news conference that the man attacked the policewomen from behind with a knife, described as a box-cutter by RTBF, around 10:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) on a boulevard in the centre of Belgium's third city, near the German border. After stabbing the officers, prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said, the man seized one of their handguns and shot both women dead before walking down the street and shooting dead a 22-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car. The man then made his way into a high school where he took a woman employee hostage, triggering a major intervention by armed police. Pupils were moved to safety as a gunbattle broke out that sent people in the street racing for cover. Several police were wounded before the attacker was finally killed. "The event is classed as a terrorist incident," Dulieu said. The national crisis centre, on high alert since past attacks by Islamic State in Paris and Brussels in the past three years, said it was monitoring events but had not raised its alert level - an indication they do not expect related follow-up attacks. La Libre Belgique newspaper quoted a police source as saying the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar" -- God is greatest in Arabic. GUNNED DOWN Images posted on social media showed elements of the drama: Apparently the two police officers, arms bare on what was a hot sunny morning, wearing protective vests and lying in pools of blood a couple of metres apart outside a cafe; the gunman, dressed in black, waving a pistol in each hand, standing in the middle of the road; and finally the assailant emerging from a building onto the street, firing on police, who gun him down. Prime Minister Charles Michel, expressing his condolences to the families of the victims, said it was too early to say what had caused the incident. King Philippe visited Liege, the biggest city in Belgium's French-speaking Wallonia region. An industrial powerhouse on the Meuse river, it was the scene of a mass shooting in 2011, when a man killed four people and wounded over 100 others before turning his gun on himself. A Brussels-based Islamic State cell was involved in attacks on Paris in 2015 that killed 130 people and on Brussels in 2016 in which 32 died. The Brussels IS cell had links to militants in Verviers, another industrial town close to Liege, where in early 2015 police raided a safe house and killed two men who had returned from fighting with radical Islamists in Syria. European authorities are deeply concerned about the risks of petty criminals, including those not from Muslim backgrounds, being inspired to Islamist violence while incarcerated. by: bdnews24

bodyGovt backtracks, ministers can get PROs of their choice ![pro-appointment-circular-Me.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmPaqHfCciuSSvPGYe4gLbeP9bKaswgBdDUnzJXge91pc1) The government has backtracked on a decision blocking the path for ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers to get public relation officers or PROs of their choice. In the wake of criticisms by different quarters, Information Secretary Abdul Malek in an office order on Tuesday cancelled a circular issued eight days ago. The circular had said the information ministry would pick and appoint PROs to different ministries, divisions, departments and agencies. It had also mistakenly mentioned appointment to posts under ‘information (radio) cadre’, but officials on Monday pointed it out to Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu that no such cadre existed. Now the information ministry has cancelled the circular, which officials said followed ‘complexities’ over the transfer of the PRO and appointment of new officials at the ICT Division. by: bdnews24

body70 prison officials, guards found guilty of drug dealing ![01_Dhaka+Central+Jail+Keraniganj_MM_080416_09.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmbUU6puXE9cJP2DTPgc7rVkfxXq6cLHTWnWRxH8z1oHWE) An investigation is underway to punish those involved in drug dealing inside jails as Bangladesh has expanded its anti-narcotics campaign. At least 70 people, including prison officials and guards, have been found guilty of drug- related offences, according to officials of the jails. Three of them were fired on Tuesday and the two were punished. The charges against jail officials and prison guards have been raised several times for supply of drugs to detainees. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Md Touhidul Islam told bdnews24.com that they have been taking measures against drug possession, consumption and supply to prisoners over the last one year. “In March last year, we received the allegations of having yaba pills against three Shariatpur prison guards—Salahuddin, Palash Hossain and Faruq Hossain,” he said. “Immediately after receiving the allegations, authorities suspended them,” Islam said. After investigators found them guilty in an internal investigation, authorities permanently terminated them on Tuesday, he said. Besides, Dhaka Central Jail prison guards Raihan Uddin and Ashraful Islam have been transferred to other places as part of disciplinary actions, he said. “At present, investigations are being conducted on specific allegations of drug addiction against 70 people, including district and deputy jailers, and jail guards.” Some of them have secretly supplied drugs to the prisoners, some are addicted, and some of them looked for opportunity for selling drugs, according to the deputy inspector general of prisons . Islam said all the 70 people have been suspended as the jail authorities have followed the principle of 'zero tolerance' about the drug. The maximum punishment will be given in accordance with the offence. Deputy Jailor of the Dhaka Central Jail Mohammad Mominul Islam was temporarily suspended in March last for his role in peddling seized yaba pills. Various actions have already been taken against over 100 officials and prison guards of 68 jails over the last one year, said Islam. by: bdnews24

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda says they are still reviewing the proposal. He told a news conference on Tuesday they were bringing changes to local government election codes of conduct so that MPs can join the campaign in polls to all local government bodies but not in their own constituencies. The EC arranged the media call after announcing the schedule for elections to Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet cities with balloting to be held on July 30. Source : bdnews24

bodyMild heatwave likely to sweep Khulna, Rajshahi ![BMD_weather.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmVWNuPJeUtSTQjtNs6yh5Xp3iJFriocYzkAu4QxPZCihD) After Nor’westers and thunderstorms for the most in April-May, it is raining less, but temperature is rising in Bangladesh. Sunday's highest temperature was recorded at 36.6 degrees Celsius in Jashore. The maximum temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 35.5 degrees Celsius. According to the Met Office, the day’s temperature may rise by one to two degrees Celsius across the country for the next two days. Temperature may rise slightly in the night and a mild heatwave is likely to occur at some places over Khulna and Rajshahi divisions. If the mercury exceeds 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, the weathermen call it a mild heatwave. If it soars to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, it is a medium heatwave. And when the temperature exceeds 40 degrees, it is considered a severe heatwave. Meteorologist Shahinul Islam told bdnews24.com, “The temperature has increased as there was no rain on Sunday. This situation may continue for two more days.” Usually it gets hot from the beginning of May, but this time, it has been a little late, he said. “A lot of thunderstorms with gusty wind dominated the weather for long. Sometimes due to excessive humidity in the air, it felt uncomfortable. Now the intensity of heat has increased as the sky is clear.” Monday's weather forecast said there could be some mild heatwave in some parts of Khulna and Rajshahi divisions. However, in many places of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in both Dhaka and Chittagong divisions, there may be temporary gust or rain accompanied with wind and rain or thunderstorms. The weather with partly cloudy sky may be dry in the other parts of the country. The forecast for the month of May said a severe heatwave (above 40 degrees Celsius) could hit the north and northwest Bangladesh. Elsewhere, there may be some mild to moderate heat waves. by: bdnews24

bodyBangladesh home minister says all-out war on drugs underway Se![Home-Minister-Shootout.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmUtZ9h7TtsK7dNU4oY7iyQ5byt7jgFevK9DFBoh62yQ3y) Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan says the government is doing its utmost in the nationwide anti-drug operations and will not stop the ‘war’ until trafficking is brought under control. The minister made the remarks to the media following a discussion reviewing security conditions ahead of Eid at the Secretariat on Sunday. At least 79 people have been killed in alleged shootouts since law enforcers began anti-drug operations on May 19 under orders from the prime minister. Human rights activists have expressed concern regarding these operations and have condemned the casualties. They have described the reported shootouts as ‘extrajudicial killings’. The government has said that it has a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on drugs and that no one involved with narcotics will be spared. “Operations will continue until we have control of the situation,” Khan said. “There is no set time frame.” “We will do all we can. Nothing has been finalised. We will do what we feel is best.” Sunday’s security meeting had come to the decision that garment workers would leave on Eid holiday in phases on Jun 12, Jun 13 and Jun 14 in order to reduce congestion on the roads, said Kamal. Garment owners have been requested to pay all salaries by Jun 7 and Eid bonuses by Jun 10. Police control rooms will be set up at Kanchpur and Chandra to handle highway congestion during Eid, the minister said. by: bdnews24

bodyKhaleda Zia bail: Decisions in three cases on Monday ![Khaleda-BSMMU-07.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmWxWSd2HPfKqNyHwtAvqhCJwKkucnWHUiUMtoDqmhhaDE) The High Court will decide on the bail of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in two Cumilla cases and one Norail case on Monday. The court concluded the bail hearing in the murder case over the fire bombing of a bus in Cumilla’s Chauddagram last Thursday. Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hassan presided over the bail hearings for the Cumilla Anti-Terror case and the Norail defamation case on Sunday. The lawyers say that bail in all three cases will be announced on Monday. Though she received a four-month bail in the case, she has not been released due to several other pending cases. Her bail petitions in two other cases are also before the High Court, but hearings in those two cases have yet to be held. The two cases filed in Cumilla include a murder case involving the bombing of a bus and a case over the illegal use of explosive substances. The Norail case charges her with defamation. Eight people were killed after a night coach was petrol bombed in Chauddagram on Feb 3, 2015 during the BNP-Jamaat alliance’s protests. Two separate cases – one for murder, the other under the Explosives Act – were filed over the incident. A warrant was issued for Khaleda’s arrest after police filed the charge sheet in the two cases. The state then filed to have her shown arrested over the graft case in Dhaka. The Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court then ordered Khaleda Zia to be brought for a hearing on Mar 26. The BNP chief has yet to be brought to court due to her illness. Khaleda’s lawyers then moved the Cumilla District and Sessions Judge’s court for her bail in the two cases on Apr 23. The hearing has been set for Jun 7. Khaleda’s lawyers then requested the date be brought forward, but the proposal was rejected. Khaleda’s lawyer Masud Rana said that they have challenged the decision at the High Court and have filed for bail there. The Norail case accuses the BNP chief of making ‘adverse comments’ regarding the Liberation War death count. The case was filed by Norail district administration Ward-1 member and Noragati Awami League Joint General Raihan Farooki on Dec 24, 2015. The court issued an arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia in the case in August 2016 after she failed to attend hearings. Her lawyers filed for bail in the case, but it was dismissed by the trial court. The decision was challenged at the High Court, said Masud Rana. The BNP chairperson petitioned for bail in the Cumilla and Norail cases on May 20. by: bdnews 24

bodyAfghan teenager Rashid earns praise after superb IPL show ![rashid-khan-afghanistan.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmSmnivXyBocwRSbGJmSpSpC9vFX9YiwWJcn73x8trEtdt) Afghan spin sensation Rashid Khan saw cricket fans in India pleading for him to be awarded citizenship after the 19-year-old single-handedly carried Sunrisers Hyderabad into Sunday's Indian Premier League final. Rashid smashed an unbeaten 34 off 10 balls to lift Hyderabad's innings to 174 for seven before leaving the Kolkata Knight Riders spellbound with his fast leg-spinners, claiming three for 19 in his four overs. If that was not enough, Rashid was also involved in a run out and then took two catches while fielding close to the boundary rope in the last over as his team won by 14 runs and advanced to the final against Chennai Super Kings at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. His performance left many impressed fans in the cricket-mad nation demanding on social media that he was awarded Indian citizenship, though the comments got a swift response from Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani. "Afghans take absolute pride in our hero, Rashid Khan," he said on Twitter tagging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I am also thankful to our Indian friends for giving our players a platform to show their skills. "Rashid reminds us whats best about Afg. He remains an asset to the cricketing world. No we are not giving him away @narendramodi." Hyderabad paid 40 million rupees ($590,580) at last year's auction to land the leg-spinner from Afghanistan, where cricket is highly popular but sporting facilities are pitifully inadequate after decades of war. An intense bidding war erupted for his services in the auction this year before Hyderabad exercised their right-to-match option for a staggering 90 million rupees ($1.33 million). He has made rapid strides since making his international debut in October 2015 as a 17- year-old, in February becoming the youngest to top the International Cricket Council's rankings for bowlers in the Twenty20 and 50- overs format. full read to go : bdnews24

bodyKlopp says Salah "full of power" regardless of Ramadan plans >> Re![Salah-01.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmWLLYGTxSUYkRHKwzHbVsXtjNZyZyvEUpU1t5PNPTtsPh) Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp says forward Mohamed Salah will be at peak fitness for Saturday's Champions League final regardless of whether or not he is observing the fasting rules of Ramadan. The question of whether devout Muslim Salah has chosen to fast in the build-up to the encounter with Real Madrid in Kiev has attracted a lot of media interest. Liverpool's physiotherapist Ruben Pons told Spanish radio station Onda Cero that Egypt forward Salah had been observing Ramadan during the team's recent training camp in Marbella but had chosen to interrupt his fasting three days before the final. "As I understand it religion is a private matter so I have nothing to say about that but all is fine, you will see him in training, he is full of power, you need to be a day before the final," Klopp told a news conference. The Ramadan fast is a time when Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. Athletes are allowed to defer their fasts until a later date, but many Muslim sportsmen and women from cultures or countries where not fasting is frowned upon may well honour the holy month. The Egyptian broke the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season with 32 league goals this campaign and has also netted 10 times in the Champions League. Salah's dominant displays in Europe have sparked debate over whether the Liverpool striker could break the decade-long stranglehold on the Ballon d'Or award of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi. Klopp, however, had little enthusiasm for adding to the discussion. "It's not important, no manager is interested in that," he said. "Messi and Ronaldo deserve all the praise they have had in the past. Now they are in their 30s and still at a great level. We will see in next years if Mo can go there." bd: bdnews24

bodyProspects of US-North Korea summit brighten after Trump's tweet >> R![Trump-Kim-Moon.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmU3FcBRW168ypTXRyndXSsShDpRgZsW9x2qbkRccHZWrK) Prospects that the United States and North Korea would hold a summit brightened after US President Donald Trump said late on Friday Washington was having "productive talks" with Pyongyang about reinstating the Jun 12 meeting in Singapore. Politico magazine reported that an advance team of 30 White House and State Department officials was preparing to leave for Singapore later this weekend. Reuters reported earlier this week the team was scheduled to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit with North Korean officials. The delegation was to include White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joseph Hagin and deputy national security adviser Mira Ricardel, US officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Trump said in a Twitter post late on Friday: "We are having very productive talks about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th., and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date." Trump had earlier indicated the summit could be salvaged after welcoming a conciliatory statement from North Korea saying it remained open to talks. "It was a very nice statement they put out," Trump told reporters at the White House. "We'll see what happens - it could even be the 12th." "We're talking to them now. They very much want to do it. We'd like to do it," he said. The comments on the summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un came just a day after Trump canceled the meeting, citing Pyongyang's "open hostility." South Korea's presidential spokesman said in response: "It's fortunate that hope is still alive for US-North Korea dialogue. We are continuing to watch developments carefully." THREATS, INSULTS After years of tension over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme, Kim and Trump agreed this month to hold what would be the first meeting between a serving US president and a North Korean leader. The plan followed months of war threats and insults between the leaders over North Korea's development of missiles capable of reaching the United States. Trump scrapped the meeting in a letter to Kim on Thursday after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by US officials demanding unilateral disarmament. Trump cited North Korean hostility in cancelling the summit. In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's criticisms had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit. He said North Korea regretted Trump's decision to cancel and remained open to resolving issues "regardless of ways, at any time." Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea had appreciated Trump having made the bold decision to work toward a summit. "We even inwardly hoped that what is called 'Trump formula' would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue," he said. North Korea also went ahead with a plan to destroy its only known nuclear site on Thursday, the most concrete action yet since pledging to cease all nuclear and long-range missile tests last month. Dozens of international journalists left North Korea on Saturday after observing the demolition of the underground tunnels in Punggye-ri, where all of the North's six nuclear tests were conducted including its latest and largest in September. DIPLOMATS AT WORK Trump's latest about-face sent officials scrambling in Washington. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters diplomats were "still at work" and said Trump had just sent a note out on the summit, which could be back on "if our diplomats can pull it off." US State Department spokeswoman Katina Adams declined to give details of any diplomatic contacts but said: "As the president said in his letter to Chairman Kim, dialogue between the two is the only dialogue that matters. If North Korea is serious, then we look forward to hearing from them at the highest levels." White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Trump did not want a meeting that was "just a political stunt." "He wants to get something that's a long- lasting and an actual real solution. And if they are ready to do that then ... we're certainly ready to have those conversations," she said. by: bdnews24

bodySmartphones? Not on our watch - ICC tells players >> Re![pakistan-england-test.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmaJVRrM6Z1D7FJGQMiLqEk2acFuKmfW2JhYsDK4EhFXCy) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has warned players to stop wearing smartwatches during play to avoid any allegations of match- fixing, cricket’s governing body said on Friday. Some Pakistan players were seen sporting the devices during the opening day of their first Test against England at Lord’s on Thursday and were cautioned by an ICC anti-corruption officer. "Communications devices are prohibited within the player and match officials area. No player is allowed to be in possession of or use a communications device which is connected to the internet whilst there," the ICC said in a statement here “Smartwatches in any way connected to a phone or Wi-Fi or in any way capable of receiving communications are not allowed and as such we will be reminding players that such devices must be surrendered along with their mobile devices on arrival at the ground on match days.” Pakistan bowler Hasan Ali was unsure which of his team mates were involved, with British media reports saying two players were wearing the watches but there was no suggestion of any wrongdoing as it was not clear if they were connected to phones. “I didn’t know who was wearing them but yes, the ICC anti-corruption officer came to speak to us and they told us this is not allowed,” Hasan said after Pakistan dominated play, bowling England out for 184 before reaching 50 for one at the close. “Next time nobody will wear them.” Only match officials are allowed specific communication devices to communicate with their colleagues while they perform their duties. Match-fixing has become a major concern for the ICC in recent years with a high-profile incident involving Pakistan on a previous tour to England forming one of cricket’s low points. Pakistani trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, who is in the current side, were part of a gambling-inspired plot to bowl no-balls at pre-arranged times during a Test match against England at Lord’s in August 2010. All three players served time in prison and were handed multi-year bans from the game after a tribunal found them guilty of spot- fixing. source: bdnews24

bodyDrug war: Death toll continues to rise after overnight ‘shootouts’ ![dinajpur-drug.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmeYETiQRztEbVT7jn2ZYpvdii8C7o9VLEtAbbFj7XshKY) At least 12 people have been killed in seven districts across the country in alleged shootouts amidst the war on drugs conducted by Bangladesh’s security forces. Two people were killed overnight in Cumilla and Dinajpur, and one each in Kurigram, Pabna, Thakurgaon, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Joypurhat, Feni and Barguna. Police claim that the casualties in Feni and Barguna and one of the dead in Dinajpur were killed in shootouts amongst rival gangs of drug traffickers. Law enforcers claim that two people in Cumilla, and the casualties in Kurigram, Mymensingh, Pabna, Thakurgaon, and Chandpur were killed in shootouts with police, while one person in Joypurhat and another in Dinajpur were killed in gunfights against RAB. Security forces say all of the dead were involved with drug trafficking and that some of them had been accused in multiple cases. At least 68 people have been killed across the country since the recent anti-drug raids began on May 19. Security forces reports on these ‘shootouts’ have been largely similar. They claim that the casualties occur in crossfire after drug traffickers instigate gunfights with law enforcers. However, the families of several of the dead have claimed that security forces detain the victims and then execute them. Human rights organisations have described the incidents of crossfire as ‘extrajudicial killings’ and called on the government to end them. Some activists acknowledge the problems of drug trafficking, but claim law enforcement’s handling of these cases raises suspicion and is cause for concern. The government has said that no one involved with drug trafficking will be spared, regardless of their position. CUMILLA At least two people have been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Cumilla. The dead have been identified as 40-year-old Babul and 36-year-old Almas, residents of Ashabari and Tetabhumi village in Brahmanbaria’s Brahmanpara Upazila. Brahmanpara police chief Sayeed Abu Mohammad Shahjahan Kabir said, a gang of drug traffickers, including Babul and Almas, opened fire on a police team on an anti-drug raid in the Bagra area around 1:30am on Saturday. “Police fired 16 rounds of ammunitions for self-defence. Babul and Almas were shot and critically injured during the gunfight. They died on their way to Comilla Medical College Hospital.” Babul was accused in 16 narcotics cases while Almas was named in eight, the OC said, adding that police recovered 40kg marijuana and a pistol from the scene. FENI Police have recovered the bullet-ridden body of 50-year-old Kabir Hossain from the Ruhitia area in Feni. Hossain was the son of Abdul Khalek Betu, who hailed from Dhonikunda village under Parshuram Upazila. He was killed in a shootout among robbers over their share of loot, police said. Feni Model Police Officer-in-Charge Rashed Khan Chowdhury said a police team went to the Ruhitia Brickfield area in Kajirbag Union after being informed of the gunfight. As soon as police arrived the other robbers fled from the scene, leaving behind a wounded Kabir. He was rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead. OC Chowdhury said Kabir was named in at least 10 cases for robbery and drug trafficking. CHANDPUR Babul, 35, who was accused in five narcotics cases, has been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Chandpur’s Kachua Upazila. He was the son of Sultan Mia from Banra village of Ashrafpur Union, police said. Detective branch police and local police conducted an operation in Babul’s house around 3am on Saturday, Kachua Police Station OC Syed Mahbubur Rahman. Babul opened fire on them, he said. “Babul was shot when police returned fire He was rushed to Kachua Upazila Medical Centre where the doctors declared him dead.” Police recovered 110 Yaba pills from Babul’s house, the OC said. JOYPURHAT A drug-dealer named Rentu Miah, 34, has been killed in ‘shootout’ involving RAB during an anti-drug raid in Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat. The deceased Rentu hailed from the village of North Gopalpur. “Rentu is a top drug-dealer named in the district’s list of drug-dealers. He has been trafficking in Phensedyl, yaba and other narcotics into Joypurhat district and other parts of the country,” said Additional Police Superintendent and Joypurhat RAB camp commander Shamim Hossain. “RAB nabbed him from the Indian border area adjacent to Panchbibi and took him on a drug raid to Bheempur when his accomplices fired at RAB. Rentu was shot in the crossfire when RAB retaliated. His accomplices fled the scene. The doctor on duty declared him dead when he was taken to Panchbibi Upazila Medical Complex.” He said RAB recovered a pistol, two rounds of bullets and ‘a large amount’ of drugs from the scene. The deceased was named in at least seven narcotics cases across the district, he added. MYMENSINGH Md Shahjahan, 30, has been killed in ‘shootout’ with law enforcement agency in Ishwarganj Upazila of Mymensingh, said police. “Police conducted a drive to nab few drug- dealers dividing up earnings near the road beside Abul Khair’s garage in Atharbari Telwari Gandimore in Ishwarganj Upazila based on a tip,” said Officer in Charge of Mymensingh Detective Branch Police Ashikur Rahman. “The drug-dealers pelted stones at police and also opened fire when the team arrived at 1:30 am. The criminals fled the scene when police retaliated and Shahjahan was found shot. Doctors on duty declared Shahjahan dead when he was taken to hospital.” Police recovered 200 grams of heroin, five bullet casings and two sharp weapons from the scene, he said. Shahjahan was named in eight narcotics cases, he added. DINAJPUR Abdus Salam, 36, died in a gunfight between two groups of drug-peddlers in Ramsagar while Sabdarul, 40, has been killed in a ‘shootout’ with RAB in Dinajpur’s Birganj Upazila. Sabdarul hailed from Nandaigaon village in Palashbari Union while Abdus Salam was from Maharmpur village in Sadar Upazila. RAB received information at that drug-dealers were discussing a deal in the Basudev neighbourhood at the southern side of the Golapganj-Kabirajhat highway around 2am, said RAB-13 Dinajpur Camp Commander Talukder Nazmus Sakib. “They fired at RAB and Sabdarul was killed when RAB retaliated.” He said a foreign-made pistol, four bullets, some marijuana and 95 bottles of Phensedyl was been recovered. Sabdarul is named in almost 40 cases, he said. A patrol team of police was dispatched to Ramsagar after receiving a report of a shootout, Officer in Charge of Kotowali Police Station Redwanur Rahim told bdnews24.com. “Most of the perpetrators ran away when police arrived in the scene. Police rescued Salam, who has shot, and took him to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital, where doctor declared him dead.” Police recovered one pistol, four cocktail bombs, 200 bottles of Phensedyl and a number of sharp weapons from the scene, he said. Salam was accused in several cases, Rahim added. BARGUNA A suspected drug dealer Sabir Hossain Khan, 35, has been killed in a gunfight between two gangs of drug traffickers at Zakir Tabak village in Sadar Upazila, said police. The gangs of Monir and Sabir Hossain had a gunfight regarding drug sales and the split of earnings at around 5:00 am, said Officer in Charge of Sadar Police Station SM Masuduzzaman. Most of the perpetrators fled the scene when police arrived, but Sabir’s body was found beside the road, he added. OC Masuduzzaman said police recovered a firearm, five bullets and 100 yaba tablets from the scene. THAKURGAON A man has been killed in ‘shootout’ with police in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. The deceased was identified as Mobarak Hossain alias Kutti, 40. bodyHasina gets honorary D Lit degree from India’s Kazi Nazrul University R![PM-Asansol-Nazrul-University-26052018-004.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmaqtDnhK5iZvKoQfRPjWBV6KV5KXnfJ5LPbxTevUD9chB) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accepted a doctorate in literature from West Bengal’s Kazi Nazrul University during a special convocation on Saturday. She was awarded with the honorary D Lit degree at the event in Asansol on Saturday. The degree was awarded to Hasina for her role in creating a democratic society free of exploitation and discrimination, for empowering women, alleviating poverty and promoting socio-economic development, said Vice Chancellor Sadhan Chakraborty. The event was part of West Bengal’s celebration of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 119th birthday on Saturday. Bangladesh celebrated the birth of its national poet on Friday. “It’s significant for me because I have been able to visit the great poet’s place of birth on his birthday and have received an honorary ‘Doctor of Literature’ degree from the university named after him,” she said. “I believe this honour is not for me alone, but for all the people of Bangladesh.” She dedicated the degree to ‘all Bangalees’. Kazi Nazrul University’s special convocation was attended by Bangladesh Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Bangladesh Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor and Hasina’s advisers HT Imam, Gowher Rizvi and Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury. Hasina compared the arrival of rebel poet Nazrul on the literary scene to that of a comet blazing through the sky of Bangla literature. He has left behind a golden legacy, she said. “He was more than a poet. He was an essayist, a songwriter, a singer, a lyricist, a musician, a playwright, a journalist, an editor and a soldier. He was a man of prodigious talents.” She also highlighted his contributions to the literature of both Muslim and Hindu Bangalees. “Bengal may be divided,” she said. “But Nazrul and Rabindranath cannot be. They both belong to both Bengals.” The prime minister is on a two-day trip to India during which she also attended the convocation at Visva-Bharati University and inaugurated the university’s Bangladesh Bhavana. Funded by the Bangladesh government, the building has a 450-seat theatre, the largest at the university. The building also houses a library of books on Bangladesh and its relations with India as well as a collection of historical and cultural artifacts of Bangladesh. The two sides of the building’s entrance have murals of Bangabandhu and Rabindranath. The inauguration event was also attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two prime ministers met for bilateral meetings following the building’s inauguration. From the Visva-Bharati, Hasina travelled to Kolkata, where she visited Rabindranath’s birthplace, the Thakur Bari, at Jorasanko and met business leaders of Kolkata at the Taj Bengal hotel where she is staying during the two-day trip. In 1972, Kazi Nazrul Islam was granted Bangladeshi citizenship and declared the national poet of Bangladesh. The poet was laid to rest on the Dhaka University campus after his death in 1976. Though he was born in Charulia, Nazrul travelled all across Bengal, spent a portion of his childhood in Mymensingh and lived in Cumilla, Chattogram, Sirajganj and Faridpur. Following the convocation, the prime minister returned to Kolkata. She is to visit the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Museum and meet with local MPs at a courtesy meeting before returning to Dhaka on Saturday night. by:bdnews24
