When she\nrefused, her father threatened to slit her\nthroat and \"chop her up\" in 18 seconds - one\nfor every year of her life - the CPS said.\nWith the help of her younger sisters, the\nwoman was able to contact her boyfriend in\nBritain, who then alerted police.\nShe was rescued within days and the marriage\ndid not go ahead.\n\"This victim was cruelly and deliberately\nmisled by her parents, who were determined\nto take her to Bangladesh for a marriage she\ndid not want,\" said Michael Quinn, a senior\nprosecutor.\nBritain banned forced marriage in 2014. The\nmaximum penalty is seven years.\nThe government's Forced Marriage Unit\nreceived reports of nearly 2,000 possible\ncases last year, many involving girls from\nSouth Asian backgrounds. The Norail case charges her with\ndefamation.\nEight people were killed after a night coach\nwas petrol bombed in Chauddagram on Feb 3,\n2015 during the BNP-Jamaat alliance’s\nprotests. Two separate cases – one for\nmurder, the other under the Explosives Act –\nwere filed over the incident.\nA warrant was issued for Khaleda’s arrest\nafter police filed the charge sheet in the two\ncases. The state then filed to have her shown\narrested over the graft case in Dhaka.\nThe Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court\nthen ordered Khaleda Zia to be brought for a\nhearing on Mar 26. The BNP chief has yet to\nbe brought to court due to her illness.\nKhaleda’s lawyers then moved the Cumilla\nDistrict and Sessions Judge’s court for her bail\nin the two cases on Apr 23. The hearing has\nbeen set for Jun 7. Khaleda’s lawyers then\nrequested the date be brought forward, but\nthe proposal was rejected.\nKhaleda’s lawyer Masud Rana said that they\nhave challenged the decision at the High\nCourt and have filed for bail there.\nThe Norail case accuses the BNP chief of\nmaking ‘adverse comments’ regarding the\nLiberation War death count. The case was\nfiled by Norail district administration Ward-1\nmember and Noragati Awami League Joint\nGeneral Raihan Farooki on Dec 24, 2015.\nThe court issued an arrest warrant against\nKhaleda Zia in the case in August 2016 after\nshe failed to attend hearings.\nHer lawyers filed for bail in the case, but it\nwas dismissed by the trial court.       "body": "Drug war: Death toll continues to rise\nafter overnight ‘shootouts’\n![dinajpur-drug.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmeYETiQRztEbVT7jn2ZYpvdii8C7o9VLEtAbbFj7XshKY)\n\nAt least 12 people have been killed in seven\ndistricts across the country in alleged\nshootouts amidst the war on drugs conducted\nby Bangladesh’s security forces.\nTwo people were killed overnight in Cumilla\nand Dinajpur, and one each in Kurigram,\nPabna, Thakurgaon, Chandpur, Mymensingh,\nJoypurhat, Feni and Barguna.\nPolice claim that the casualties in Feni and\nBarguna and one of the dead in Dinajpur were\nkilled in shootouts amongst rival gangs of drug\ntraffickers.\nLaw enforcers claim that two people in\nCumilla, and the casualties in Kurigram,\nMymensingh, Pabna, Thakurgaon, and\nChandpur were killed in shootouts with police,\nwhile one person in Joypurhat and another in\nDinajpur were killed in gunfights against RAB.\nSecurity forces say all of the dead were\ninvolved with drug trafficking and that some of\nthem had been accused in multiple cases.\nAt least 68 people have been killed across the\ncountry since the recent anti-drug raids began\non May 19.\nSecurity forces reports on these ‘shootouts’\nhave been largely similar. They claim that the\ncasualties occur in crossfire after drug\ntraffickers instigate gunfights with law\nenforcers.\nHowever, the families of several of the dead\nhave claimed that security forces detain the\nvictims and then execute them.\nHuman rights organisations have described the\nincidents of crossfire as ‘extrajudicial killings’\nand called on the government to end them.\nSome activists acknowledge the problems of\ndrug trafficking, but claim law enforcement’s\nhandling of these cases raises suspicion and\nis cause for concern.\nThe government has said that no one involved\nwith drug trafficking will be spared, regardless\nof their position.\nCUMILLA\nAt least two people have been killed in an\nalleged shootout with police in Cumilla.\nThe dead have been identified as 40-year-old\nBabul and 36-year-old Almas, residents of\nAshabari and Tetabhumi village in\nBrahmanbaria’s Brahmanpara Upazila.\nBrahmanpara police chief Sayeed Abu\nMohammad Shahjahan Kabir said, a gang of\ndrug traffickers, including Babul and Almas,\nopened fire on a police team on an anti-drug\nraid in the Bagra area around 1:30am on\nSaturday.\n“Police fired 16 rounds of ammunitions for\nself-defence. Babul and Almas were shot and\ncritically injured during the gunfight. They died\non their way to Comilla Medical College\nHospital.”\nBabul was accused in 16 narcotics cases\nwhile Almas was named in eight, the OC said,\nadding that police recovered 40kg marijuana\nand a pistol from the scene.\nFENI\nPolice have recovered the bullet-ridden body\nof 50-year-old Kabir Hossain from the Ruhitia\narea in Feni.\nHossain was the son of Abdul Khalek Betu,\nwho hailed from Dhonikunda village under\nParshuram Upazila.\nHe was killed in a shootout among robbers\nover their share of loot, police said.\nFeni Model Police Officer-in-Charge Rashed\nKhan Chowdhury said a police team went to\nthe Ruhitia Brickfield area in Kajirbag Union\nafter being informed of the gunfight. As soon\nas police arrived the other robbers fled from\nthe scene, leaving behind a wounded Kabir. He\nwas rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital, where the\ndoctors declared him dead.\nOC Chowdhury said Kabir was named in at\nleast 10 cases for robbery and drug\ntrafficking.\nCHANDPUR\nBabul, 35, who was accused in five narcotics\ncases, has been killed in an alleged shootout\nwith police in Chandpur’s Kachua Upazila.\nHe was the son of Sultan Mia from Banra\nvillage of Ashrafpur Union, police said.\nDetective branch police and local police\nconducted an operation in Babul’s house\naround 3am on Saturday, Kachua Police\nStation OC Syed Mahbubur Rahman. Babul\nopened fire on them, he said.\n“Babul was shot when police returned fire He\nwas rushed to Kachua Upazila Medical Centre\nwhere the doctors declared him dead.”\nPolice recovered 110 Yaba pills from Babul’s\nhouse, the OC said.\nJOYPURHAT\nA drug-dealer named Rentu Miah, 34, has been\nkilled in ‘shootout’ involving RAB during an\nanti-drug raid in Panchbibi Upazila of\nJoypurhat. The deceased Rentu hailed from\nthe village of North Gopalpur.\n“Rentu is a top drug-dealer named in the\ndistrict’s list of drug-dealers. He has been\ntrafficking in Phensedyl, yaba and other\nnarcotics into Joypurhat district and other\nparts of the country,” said Additional Police\nSuperintendent and Joypurhat RAB camp\ncommander Shamim Hossain.\n“RAB nabbed him from the Indian border area\nadjacent to Panchbibi and took him on a drug\nraid to Bheempur when his accomplices fired\nat RAB. Ibrahim, the head of the drug\ntrafficking syndicate, was shot in the leg. Bangladesh celebrated\nthe birth of its national poet on Friday.\n“It’s significant for me because I have been\nable to visit the great poet’s place of birth on\nhis birthday and have received an honorary\n‘Doctor of Literature’ degree from the\nuniversity named after him,” she said.\n“I believe this honour is not for me alone, but\nfor all the people of Bangladesh.”\nShe dedicated the degree to ‘all Bangalees’.\nKazi Nazrul University’s special convocation\nwas attended by Bangladesh Education\nMinister Nurul Islam Nahid, Bangladesh\nForeign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Bangladesh\nCultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor\nand Hasina’s advisers HT Imam, Gowher Rizvi\nand Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.\nHasina compared the arrival of rebel poet\nNazrul on the literary scene to that of a comet\nblazing through the sky of Bangla literature.\nHe has left behind a golden legacy, she said.\n“He was more than a poet.
