      "title": "Journey to Texas: Eight Years Later",
      "body": "<center>https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/02/Journey_8years.jpg</center> <br/>It's been eight beautiful years here in Texas. We've had a bunch of experiences that has shifted the way we do life, experiences that matured our faith. One of the most valuable lessons we've learned is raising our children. Our family is our biggest asset and nurturing them and teaching them to become responsibility citizens and stewards with what they're blessed with. The journey isn't easy, but well worth it.\r\n\r\nFebruary 23, 2011, on our daughter's 3rd birthday, we packed our things and headed for Texas. (Genesis 4:1)</em></center></p>\r\n<center><em>I never knew you; depart from me... (Matthew 7:21-23)</em></center></p>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nWhat do these two scriptures mean to you? What do they have in common?\r\n\r\n\r\nBoth relate in regards to intimacy or the lack of.</p>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nRelationships are under attack. Godly relationship is under attack. Whether it'd be marriage, friendship or even our walk with Christ. Today's society is filled with new forms of distraction that can be to blame for our lack of intimacy with our spouses and with God. What you make time for is what's most important to you; that very thing strips you away from creating relationships and trust with those you hold dear. Let's look at these distractions and discover ways to avoid them.\r\n<ul>\r\n <li>Social Media. DUH!! We all have it in some form or fashion. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BLOGS (well, not mine, but you get it ). We are all consumed with unnecessary information. IT's filling our minds, changing our thoughts and creating havoc in our relationships. How many of us can admit to opening an app first thing in the morning or right before bed at night? I think we are all guilty. Even if it's for 10 minutes, that time could have been used wisely by conversing with our spouse, tidying the house or even reading the bible. What did we do before the break of social media? I do know we were more engaged in meaningful conversations with others. Oh to be simple again! Our phones and tablets are breaking us away from real interaction. Real intimacy.&nbsp;</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nHow to win back intimacy from social media? IT can be easy if you're dedicated enough. PUT. THE. PHONES. DOWN!! Emails and the news will always be there. Do you actually need it first thing in the morning or before bed? NO! Usually, the things you sit with can disrupt your whole day. We have to be aware of what we consume. All news is not beneficial. PICK. UP. YOUR. BIBLES. As a follower of Christ, I can't stress this enough. Starting and ending your day masking in His presence is the best thing you can do for your spiritual life and mental health. Cleaning your mind and even your space of unnecessary conversation and information is good for you. Philippians 4:8 reads, \"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.\" You can only think about these things if you get rid of stress, disappointment, and comparison that social media provides.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<ul>\r\n <li>Busyness. Hustle season is among us. ALL. THE. TIME. We strive for the American Dream. We are hungry for success. We love the applause but we fail to see that at the end of the day, you're only human. We can't do it all no matter how hard we push ourselves. We are drained and have time for nothing more. Our lives are void of relationship. Okay, so what you say you're happily married. But did you ever consider your spouse? Did you ever consider your relationship with Christ? I can't speak for no one else but myself, but I am sure you can relate. Even though I'm home with my children, I can definitely lose track of time. I am busy teaching and developing my children throughout the day... giving them social freedom in the afternoon and by the end of the day, I'm too tired to spend time with my husband. It was a toll on our marriage.&nbsp;</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nRegaining control of my daily life has been a struggle because I want the best for my family without sacrificing my mental health and my relationship with my husband. I've learned that tomorrow's issues can wait for tomorrow to come. If I forget to take the clothes out of the dryer or worst, the washing machine, it would have to wait. I decided not to use my \"free evening time\" on incomplete morning chores. I am the type to always find work to do after my children are asleep. If the evenings are the only time I have for my husband, I am going to give that to him. If my mornings are available to sit with the Word and journal, guess what? I'm going to give God that time. What we fail to realize, relationships are a gift. We must use our gifts wisely with the time we are given. Our time is not our own so be mindful of what you do with it.\r\n\r\nIntimacy requires a conscious intention to make space in our busy lives for the experience. There is, after all, a finite amount of time in each day and intimate experiences do occur in time and space. Unless we recognize the importance of including intimacy in our lives, that is, seeing it as an essential ingredient in the establishment of a high sense of well-being, we will be unlikely to give it the value that it deserves.\r\n\r\nIf we try to wait for the time of intimacy to occur, we will be waiting for a long time. Intimacy must be initiated. It must be intentional. Intimacy must start with the decision to do. Relationships and intimacy are never one-sided. It benefits all involved and affects many. Adam knew his wife Eve. There's no knowing without relationship.&nbsp; Without knowing, you'll be unknown.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nSpiritual intimacy is even more important. We must be active in our relationship with Christ. It would be a waste of a lifetime to walk this life thinking we're in a relationship when we're not. How embarrassing to claim someone openly to be denied? Spend time in His word and get at His feet. This is still a work in progress, yet, it still works. We must put the effort into building lasting relationships. Make time. Make room for God and for your relationship. There's favor in intimacy. There's covering provided for covenants. You can't do much of anything without math and reading. I have been privileged to teach my children and seeing them bloom is a very rewarding accomplishment. Today, I will like to share some of my favorite reading resources that I have grown to love.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nMy 6-year-old has an amazing vocabulary and teaching her has been by far the easiest. I think that is the case because I've had a lot of trial and errors with the first four children. I can say, this time around, I taught my youngest the way I felt confident. I've done my own research and paid close attention to their needs and abilities. All children learn differently. Yes, I am aware but luckily, teaching my children to read was quite similar.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nHere are some of my favorite resources in teaching my children how to read:\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-3251 alignleft\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/04/teachmonster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"244\"></div><br/>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/blog/free-phonics-games-apps\">&nbsp;Teach My Monster to Read app</a>-&nbsp; I have been using this app for a year and I can honestly say, it has been the foundation of my reader's journey. I enjoy freebies so while this app was free, I scoped it up! If you follow me on my social media platforms (<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/hisproverbs1822/\">Facebook</a>) and (<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/hisproverbs1822/\">Instagram</a>), you would have seen all the post about this! It has been such a blessing to us!\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-3250 alignleft\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/04/100-lessons-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\"></div><br/>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Teach-Your-Child-Read-Lessons/dp/0671631985\">Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons</a>-&nbsp; I purchased this book in hopes that I would actually utilize it for 100 days... LIES!!! :) With all of our daily readings and activities, I have yet to complete the book. I have to skip ahead in the book now just because my daughter had advanced so much within the past few months. Good ol' step by step reading materials. As the child becomes familiar&nbsp;with the English language, breezing through these series of books are second nature. These are a series of children’s books designed to teach reading skills acquisition. With a foundation in phonics methods, each level addresses each stage in a child’s reading development.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nLibrary- Now you know I wasn't going to end my list of resources without mentioning the local library?! We visit our library weekly to search out level appropriate books for each child. My children weren't always eager to search for books because honestly, they didn't like to read! It took a lot of prayers to understand that I had to find things my children were interested in to get them to read. Well, mission accomplished! Now seeing what my children are interested in, it makes so much sense as far as their personalities are concerned. A book can shed so much light!\r\n\r\nWhy is early literacy so important?\r\n\r\nThere is a magical time between ages 3 to 7 when children expand out beyond verbal communication and start to develop written language skills as well. It's an amazing transformation. Very young children can identify letters and sound them out. Eventually, older children learn to identify common words, and then start to write and read on their own.\r\n<ul>\r\n <li>Children introduced to reading early on tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age (American Academy of Pediatrics).</li>\r\n <li>Reading, rhyming, singing, and talking — beginning from birth — profoundly influence literacy and language development, the foundations for all other learning (www.healthychildren.org).</li>\r\n <li>Family involvement during these crucial years of development is extremely important. It influences your child's motivation to learn and grow.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nOver the years, we've read countless of books and authors, but with my research and trial and error, these authors are our go-to for early literacy and phonics.\r\n\r\nNow some of our favorite authors for early readers...\r\n\r\nEric Carle. Best known for A Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear... His books are always colorful and full of adventure. He's been writing children's books for over 40 years!&nbsp;\r\n\r\nDr. Suess. Best known for A Cat in a Hat and Green Eggs and Ham... He's basically the legend of children's books! I've read his books growing up and all of my children have read his books as well!\r\n\r\nJames Dean. Best known for Pete the Cat. I was introduced to Pete the Cat while I was teaching Pre-K. There were <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1pwI31c2Hg\">videos</a> on YouTube with amazing music as the narrator read the story. So fun and inviting that I purchased a few of the early reader books of some of the classics.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nLearning to read is the foundation for everything in life! You get the picture. This song stems from the scripture Mark 4:24 \"...Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more.&nbsp;\"\r\n\r\nWhat we see, say and do matters and can greatly affect us.\r\n\r\nWell, you can imagine my thoughts when I heard about this MoMo thing on YouTube kids' videos. My children haven't seen nor heard anything about this until they were talking to some friends. They were clueless to hear how this \"creature\" would pop out of regular YT kids' videos.&nbsp; Even with the news about pedophiles creating an underground environment preying on children. It's disgusting yet I am not blind to the knowledge that children are under attack. The rising numbers of childhood suicide and missing children cases are enough to keep my ears and eyes open to what I allow my children to watch in their spare time or even who they hang out with. While it is not humanly possible to track everything your children watch or do, you can instill values and boundaries for them. You have that huge responsibility to do the best you can to ensure safety and innocence.\r\n\r\nIt is said the \"Kids test boundaries to learn... Parents enforce boundaries to teach.\" Of course, children test boundaries, they should. It's apart of their development! Without boundaries, the world will be worst off than it already is. Children dislike rules but they're in place to protect them.\r\n\r\nOne way to ensure their well-being and protecting their eyes and ears will be <strong>communication</strong>. We talk with our children constantly about EVERYTHING. Something I wished I'd experienced growing up. When children are comfortable to talk with their parents about anything, the less likely outside influences won't interfere. They may try, but it won't work.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Teach internet safety</strong>. As soon as I began homeschooling my children, one of the first lessons they learned was internet safety. Majority of their work is online and they must be computer literate to navigate the world wide web. Here's a great resource on internet safety. (<a href=\"https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/net-safety.html\">click here</a>)\r\n\r\n<strong>Spending quality time with your children</strong>. I can't stress this enough. Since I've been homeschooling my children, I've learned so much about them. I've also learned that even friends can negatively influence your children. With my children being home, I can easily see when something's off about them. Attitudes may differ if they are with friends whether it's at church or just regular outdoor play. Issues are easily addressed because I can easily recognize the difference. Now, every family isn't afforded the opportunity to home school their children, but what you can do is give them your undivided attention and time.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3221\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/MVIMG_20190210_214432-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><br/> <img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3222\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/IMG_20161019_135300-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\"><br/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Monitor the apps and games your children use. </strong>Even some of the child-friendly games can have questionable themes and users.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pull-right\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-3227 alignright\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/apps_kidsmode_kv_mo-197x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\"></div><br/>&nbsp;I had to ban apps that my big girls used just because users were doing questionable things. <a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/?re=m\">Musical.ly</a> for example... It may seem innocent, but once I heard predators can gain access to my daughter's videos, I deleted everything. I did talk to her about the dangers of putting herself online and she completely understood. Even if she didn't understand, she'll be alright without that app. *Mothers know best after all!\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Set online time</strong>. We utilize Microsoft screen time. We set the number of hours our children are allowed a day on their computers and laptops as well as block websites that would try to lure them elsewhere. If you aren't internet savvy, I'd suggest to just take the devices in the evening.&nbsp; When my little sisters come over, the internet is going off or I'm taking devices.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3226\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/530d6cc903abc4de5147443de4588db39-300x221.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\"><br/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Limit online time</strong>. Idle minds get in trouble fast. Even if most of your child's work is online (like mine), you have to give them brain breaks often. Keep your children's minds sharp with tactile activities. Go to the library, read books, art projects, the GREAT OUTDOORS. I understand we all have busy lives and each child is entertained differently, but what I will suggest is that we are all mindful of our children, no matter what they do. We are responsible for our children. We have a responsibility for them. This can be compared to the lesson in the bible the Eli was taught. Because he neglected his parental rights and duties to his children by not correcting their bad behavior from the very beginning, God punished Eli by cutting off his favor and as a sign that God meant what He said, Eli's sons,&nbsp;Hophni and Phinehas would die the very same day. She's practically my BFF in my head. She's a mother of three and wife of gospel artist, Jimmy Needham (who happens to be one of my favorite singers). Kelly's blog is full of wisdom, application and Gospel truth.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-3197 alignleft\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/FreeDesiringGod_large-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"></div><br/>John Piper's<a href=\"https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/all\"> Desiring God&nbsp;</a>\r\n\r\nI've been listening to his podcasts and reading his daily devotions for a few years now and it's still refreshing and encouraging and convicting. His<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFF7F6AE365DA3564\"> podcast</a>&nbsp;(available in many forms) coincides with his blog so it is always easy to read and understand because he always go in depth on lessons and studies. He is also available to ask questions and give the most biblical advice possible.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-3204 alignleft\" src=\"https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/03/PriscillaShirer-C-400x600-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"></div><br/>\r\n\r\nPriscilla Shirer's <a href=\"https://www.goingbeyond.com/ministry/biography/\">Going Beyond</a>\r\n\r\nPriscilla is a storyteller and that makes reading her blog even more interesting and inspiring. I recently became a fan of her work and speaking. She invites other writers on her blog which gives it a unique and personalized view and application of the Word of God. It it almost set up as a devotional which means it's short, sweet and to the point.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nSocial media can have one of two affects on you: either it can make you better or break you. I try to be conscience of what I allow into my life, even on the internet. These resources keep me in check and make my home life and bible study better. It keeps me motivated and encouraged. We all want to be better and with every good intentions, we try our hardest to make life and relationship meaningful. Even if that means, reading. Now, I am not an avid reader, but I will definitely pick up a book if it means, I'll benefit from it. Basically, I can't read anything. I'm not the gossip reading type or the kind that reads for relaxation, I read with purpose. With that being said, here's my favorite books for marriage and motherhood.\r\n\r\nIn no particular order...\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/How-Be-God-Chaser-Kid/dp/0768450063/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550607799&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=how+to+be+a+God+chaser+and+a+kid+chaser\">How to Be a&nbsp; God Chaser and a Kid Chaser</a> -&nbsp; This book was gifted to me at a time in my life I was trying to balance a job and raising my children a few years ago. I didn't think I was able to do both successfully (I was right). I cracked opened this book and it made me recognize my true responsibility and that was my children.&nbsp; This book helped me value my role as a Godly mother that not only live the life in front of my children but outside as well. In the book, I read\r\n<blockquote><em><strong>\"Passionate parents in pursuit of God can produce passionate children in God's kingdom. Heavenly passion and earthly passion can mix!\"</strong></em>\n</blockquote>\r\nThis is so simple but it was an eye opener for me. I felt selfish for wanting to work, but this reminded me that there's nothing wrong with that pursuit as long as it doesn't take me away from my heavenly pursuit in serving God and taking care of my family. I walked away from that job knowing I was doing the right thing and today I can say I am happy I followed through.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Radical-Womanhood-Feminine-Faith-Feminist/dp/0802450849/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550608423&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=radical+womanhood+feminine+faith+in+a+feminist+world\">Radical Womanhood</a> - I was reluctant to read this book when I read the title but then I read closely... Radical Womanhood: Feminine Faith in a Feminist World.. It all made sense and I was eager to get this book home to read it. I think this is one of 3 books I've purchased with my own money. I think this was a good investment. I bought this book when I was newly married and at the time, people was in my ear saying that I need to find my \"own identity\" and create my \"own life\". I was offended being that I was encouraged to have a life outside of my new marriage. IT was almost as if I was given faulty information that was meant to destroy my marriage. In this book, it talks uncovers the balance of cultural influences and biblical authority when it comes to my role as a woman, wife and mother. At the end of the day, I am those 3 things despite what culture say I ought to be.This book was God sent and I am blessed to have read this when I needed it the most. Yes, this book has been in my library over 13 years, but I was refer to this book when needed.\r\n\r\nI think every married couple has these next few books in their collection...\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Five-Love-Languages-Heartfelt-Commitment/dp/1876825545/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550608952&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=the+five+love+languages+how+to+express+heartfelt+commitment\">The Five Love Languages</a> - Gary Chapman either made you highly motivated or highly upset, in my home, it was a mixture of both. When we purchased this book, I just knew it would make us a better team when it came to communication. When we dug deep into our affirmations, I was ready to throw this book away because Ray tried to make me do all the talking.. What's his problem!? :) All jokes aside, this book opened the conversation of communication. It was definitely a challenge for me because I am not the easiest to talk to. I wasn't brought up in a home where communication was key. Chains were definitely broken. Today, I still give Ray a hard time when communicating with him, but we're (more like I am) doing so much better!\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Five-Languages-Apology-Experience-Relationships/dp/1881273571/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550609306&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=The+Five+Languages+of+Apology\">The Five Languages of Apology</a> - I purchased this book only because I signed us up for a married couple class based around this book. It didn't go over well and we only went to 1/2 a class. We couldn't stomach it. :) But I did study this book on my own terms and even practiced some techniques on Ray (without him knowing).&nbsp; In this book we (I) exercised these steps: Expressing Regret, Accepting Responsibility, Making Restitution, Genuinely Repenting and Requesting Forgiveness. When I tried this on Ray, he picked up on it quickly then we explored this idea together. Honestly, I can <a href=\"https://konmari.com/\">KonMari</a> this book!&nbsp;\r\n\r\nLastly..\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Marriage-Rock-Gods-Design-Dream/dp/0964743507/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550609809&amp;sr=1-4&amp;keywords=Marriage+on+The+Rock\">Marriage on The Rock</a> - A few weeks ago Ray and I went to a stimulcast of the XO Conference... We were so late arriving, but we did receive some encouragement knowing we are in the right direction when it comes to our relationship. But this book was for sell at the conference and I had to get it. I am still reading this book and will review it on my blog. So far I am enjoying this book.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nDo you have any go to books? What's your favorite genre? It can be easy to become idle when you have the whole day at your disposal. And sometimes your schedule doesn't quit fit for you to hang out with your girlfriends. Luckily, there are plenty of resources online and off to keep you engage and current in the times. If you're like me, you spend most of your day researching anything from recipes to devotions and everything in between. For the next few weeks, I will share some of my favorite resources that keep me encouraged and educated from the comfort of my work desk!\r\n\r\nLet's start off with books... Are they still even a thing? With digital prints and audio materials available, it's easy to make the transition to something convenient, especially when you have a house full of kids 24/7 and not real time to sit and read, audio books are a great resource. I don't have a large digital collection, but what I do enjoy is listening to the bible.\r\n\r\nFaith Comes by Hearing has an amazing bible app, <a href=\"http://www.bible.is\">Bible.Is</a>\r\n\r\nI can listen to the bible with my phone anywhere. I even play it while my children are studying or doing school work. It makes a big difference when we listen to the bible versus music. Their mindset is completely different and calm. This app comes in many translations and versions making it accessible to anyone, anywhere!\r\n\r\nNext... my daily devotionals. I have plenty, but this trio is what&nbsp; I refer to almost always. AND they were all gifted to me! #winning\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Wisdom-Women-Compiled-Barbour/dp/1624169910/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550523134&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=isbn+978-1-62416-991-5\">Daily Wisdom for Women</a> - I had this devotional for some years now and I can't get enough of it. Even though the devotions are short in reading, it provides you little nuggets of encouragement and is a good resource to begin a bible study if you are unsure what to study.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Trusting-God-Christian-Art-Publishers/dp/1432117653/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550523651&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=isbn+978-1-4321-1765-8\">Trusting in God 366 Devotions</a>- This devotional was actually a birthday gift from my Pastor. I cherish this devotional. It is full of insight and scriptural references. I just love it. Here's a snippet of today's reading: February 19-&nbsp;<em><strong>The Names of God</strong>- \"His name is clearly written across creation: on every dewdrop, every cloud, on every majestic mountain and in every green valley.\" It's so vivid and colorful in its writing.</em>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/101-Most-Powerful-Proverbs-Bible/dp/0446532150/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1550524071&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=isbn+0-446-53215-0\">101 Most Powerful Proverbs in the Bible</a>- If you know me, you'll know the book of Proverbs to be my favorite book! This isn't a devotional per se but it is a reference of what each proverb mean. It can be used as a great resource in studying the book of Proverbs.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nThis is my list of resources for devotionals. I keep my reading simple yet powerful. If you didn't know, Valentine's Day had a bit of a rough start. During the time of the middle-aged Roman government there was a priest, Saint Valentine who was martyred because he believed the soldiers were better fighters if they were married. Basically, a man would fight well if he had something or someone to fight for and live another day to fight again. Well the government had others plans in mind. Saint Valentine stuck to his beliefs and married many soldiers without the government knowing. Well, obviously, they found out and charge him to death. The church wanted to honor his sacrifices by celebrating him annually to commemorate his death but there was a dilemma.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.history.com/topics/lupercalia\">Lupercalia</a>. A fertility ritual for the god of agriculture. It was intended to bring fertility and keep out evil. Men would sacrifice animals and whip women (among other things) with the hides of the animals they killed. This festival went on around the 13th to the 15th of February. Men would pick names out of jars to be coupled with during the festivities or even longer if the pickings were ripe. When in Rome, right? The church had enough of these rituals and unnatural practices, so they fought&nbsp; celebrate Saint Valentine in its place, making the date February 14. Smack dead in the middle of Lupercalia! Personally, I became uninterested in the holiday back in 2005 when my fiance (now husband) went to Denny's for breakfast and the waitress was literally flirting with him our entire visit.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nFirst she introduced herself as our server but stared at Ray the entire time! Then when we placed our order, she gave him extra syrup and it was warm as if she made it herself, me? Well, mine came out of the bottle...cold! It's funny now because I see how disrespectful and desperate she was. But, she took the cake with this next move... We ordered a strawberry milkshake after our meal. Not only did she give Ray the milkshake, but the entire blender!! You can't make this up!! Yes! The ENTIRE BLENDER!!! I'm sure she lost her job after that! Mind you we were not the only couple there. It's Valentine's Day and a Saturday, so that Denny's was crowded! What if the next table wanted a milkshake?! They didn't get it because the blender was at OUR TABLE!&nbsp;\r\n\r\nFrom this day forward, I can do without the holiday. It is always nice to have a date or celebrate relationship, but honestly, the holiday is overrated. If you celebrate Valentine's Day, good for you and I hope you have a great time.       "title": "Intentional (and practical) Housekeeping",
      "body": "<center>https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/02/Intentional-Cleaning.jpg</center> <br/>Homemaking is a great privilege I do not take lightly. Being a wife, mother, and most importantly a woman of God, keeping the home is a commandment... something we are called to do.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nI've been a stay at home mother pretty much my entire married life. Over the years and as our children grew, I became aware and appreciative of the duty I have. Housekeeping is way more than cleaning the home but it also entails creating a home that is a safe haven for my family and any who enters it.\r\n<blockquote>\"She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:27\n</blockquote>\r\nWe are all aware of <a href=\"https://blog.konmari.com/\">Marie Kondo's method</a> of tidying the home. Right? Well if you're not, here's a recap of her method:&nbsp;In her native Japan, Kondo says, tidiness is a way of everyday living. She applies feng shui principles to the tenets of her tidying and ditches long-held organizational beliefs (such as cleaning little by little every day, storing items according to the seasons and discarding one item for every item brought into the home). She says that these principles, though meant to help, are the very reasons why we seemingly are never able to maintain our mess.&nbsp; she has coined the term \"Spark&nbsp;Joy\" and it has become the thing to consider when housekeeping intentionally. There is an excerpt from her<a href=\"https://konmari.com/collections/books/products/spark-joy\">&nbsp;book</a> when she refers to one such item in her home—her Kiccoro T-shirt; it's a memento from an expo she attended years ago (\"How can you keep this? Aren't you embarrassed? How can you wear that? You should throw it away...\") she has held onto it with fierce affection. \"These are the types of things you should boldly hold on to,\" she writes. \"If you can say without a doubt, 'I really like this!' no matter what anyone else says, and if you like yourself for having it, then ignore what other people think.\"\r\n\r\nTo sum it up even more, if it \"Sparks Joy\" keep it, if it doesn't get rid of it.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nThere are many ways to \"Spark Joy\" in your home but let's ask these questions before we begin.\r\n<ol>\r\n <li>Are you creating an environment for love and encouragement?</li>\r\n <li>Does everything in your home have a \"home\"?</li>\r\n <li>How easy are you to confront the things that come against your home?</li>\r\n</ol>\r\nIf you can answer these questions confidently, then you are on your way to intentional housekeeping. Now let's take a walk:\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><strong>MAKING YOUR BED TO LIE IN IT</strong></h2>\r\nWhen I asked the question about creating an environment for love and encouragement, it is to provoke us all to greater works as homemakers. As mentioned before homemaking is more than cleaning a home, but it entails maintaining life and love for those who occupy that home.&nbsp; The book of Proverbs shows us the difference between a wise woman and a foolish one. Ladies, we have a choice when it comes to setting a standard for our home and family. <em>Proverbs 14: 1 says, \"The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.\" </em>There are plenty of things and people we can place blame on when things don't&nbsp;go well in our lives, but in our home life, we have the ability to set the tone. It's our&nbsp;responsibility. When the house filled with love and openness, our family reflects that. Same as if we fill our homes with confusion and disorder, our family will reflect that. We are what we put into our families, so fill it well.&nbsp; Now, cleaning has that same prospective. If we fill our home with meaningful things (inspirational quotes, calming colors, family time, etc.) we will reap amazing benefits.&nbsp;\r\n\r\nSpeaking of filling the home, let's consider...\r\n<h2><strong>EVERYTHING HAS ITS PLACE</strong></h2>\r\nHome life can be as simplistic as you make it. For me, I try to make my life simple by keeping my home simple. As a home educator, school supplies and books can creep in a take over the house, but consistently, I'm reorganizing so I won't be consumed with materials. Having my children of age to see a mess and clean it is also a huge blessing for our family. There was a point when cleaning was dreadful, but now, everyone has the reponsibility to keep the house clean. It's practical good stewardship. Now, don't get me wrong, our home isn't :Home and Garden\" ready by any means, and it's definitely lived in with plenty of character to say&nbsp; the least. BUT WE KEEP IT CLEAN! :)&nbsp;\r\n\r\nWith the kids home during the day, it can indeed get pretty chaotic, but that's where order steps in. See a mess, clean it up! I will talk about our chore system in a later post, but my children no longer follow a chore chart (for now) because they are old enough to clean what they see need attention. The main goal of cleaning a home it to know that everything has its place and if not, let it go. I've adopted this method of letting things go recently and listen when I tell you... IT'S LIFE CHANGING!\r\n\r\nThere's some things in life that sometimes test your standards and can sometimes cause you to question the things you've put in place for your home, but you have the authority to confront those things and even people. Which bring us to our last point...\r\n<h2>&nbsp;</h2>\r\n<h2><strong>CONFRONTING THE STATUS QUO</strong></h2>\r\nNow remember, we live simply on a 2 acre farm we love and cherish. There's still many things to finalize the farm of our dreams, but we all know things take time. Society, sometimes will flirt with the idea that what you're doing isn't popular or your way of living is outdated. I've fought plenty of times trying to ignore the comments and suggestions of others trying to convince my lifestyle to be more like theirs. Coming from Chicago where we lived the suburban life, we knew that lifestyle wasn't meant for us. We enjoy our freedom to dig a hole where ever we choose or to house chickens and pigs in our backyard. It's what we want for our family. To go outside and grab an egg from the chicken coop if you're preparing breakfast. That's what we absolutely enjoy. No one can force my mind to think otherwise of my life. Breaking from the suggestions and complaints of others can change your life and give you a better appreciation of what you built for your family. Every opportunity I get, I would post some fascinating details about our daily homestead life. I get a kick out of some of the comments or texts I receive that say, \"Oh girl that couldn't be me!\" or \"Whew, I would be deathly afraid of that goat!\" I just smile! Or even the not so happy moments when we're flooding. The comments are usually more heartfelt with the side note of \"Are you sure you want to stay there?\" WHY NOT!! God always knows what He's doing.. we're just sitting back and enjoying the ride! When you are comfortable with what you instilled in your family, peace is easy. When you rely on God to lead you in building your reality, you can trust that He knows what He'[s doing and that He will give you the desires of your heart.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nDear God,&nbsp;\r\n\r\nI thank you for the life I live. I take nothing for granted. Teach me to become a better steward of the blessings you have given me: My family, my home, my ministry.       "body": "<center>https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/01/hygiene-health.jpg</center> <br/><p>I have been sitting on this information for over a year now and I truly believe now it the time to share my thoughts! It is not common for Black women to speak of feminine care in a descriptive matter and I want to be the one to break the silence. Growing up, talking about feminine hygiene was taboo. Thankfully, with all the talk and research of reproductive issues and health issues, I can educate my daughters and little sisters about the importance of asking questions about what's going on with their bodies because for me at their age, I didn't have a clue! I want to be able to speak freely of the importance of what we use for that time of the month and ways we can improve our overall health and hygiene.</p>\n<p>Since the age of 14, I've had all sorts of experiences and incidents revolving around my menstrual cycle: heavy flows, sporadic cycles, severe cramping and migraines and much more! When I got married at 19 and shortly after became pregnant, my periods were pretty much non-existent! Nursing and shortly after a year, I'm pregnant again and again and again and honestly, I enjoyed not having a period for nearly 7 years!! But in recent years, after my last nursing phase, my periods returned with migraines and even infections! Yes! You read correctly... INFECTIONS! Even an emergency room visit and a $300 bill when I <strong>thought</strong> I lost my tampon! :)</p>\n<p>My periods last for a full week and wearing disposable pads were not good for my body. My skin would break out and sometimes, even worst, infection. I've had enough and decided to do some research. For a few years, before I decided to try reusable products, I was interested in trying. Even before then, I wanted to make my own products. Anyway, fast forward to mid-2017, I researched products that would benefit my lifestyle. I then purchased <a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5Y38QM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&amp;th=1\">luna cups</a> and <a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017D8IW6K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&amp;th=1\">reusable pads</a>.&nbsp; Speaking of benefits, I would like to list some of the things I was looking forward to not dealing with when I decided on my reusable products...</p>\n<ol><li>I HATE traditional, disposable PADS!! With a passion!! For years I've suffered and when I found that I had an option outside of \"<a href=\"https://helloclue.com/articles/culture/whats-all-fuss-about-free-bleeding-why-does-it-matter\">free-flowing</a>\" I was all for it!&nbsp;</li><li>Comfort- Traditional pads were so uncomfortable no matter the size I tried. I wore overnight pads in the evening and overnight for the simple fact that I leaked and wasted a lot of clothes ( and bedding) in the process. Having my husband wake up before I did and witnessing his wife in a literal bloodbath is embarrassing and unattractive (even though he wouldn't admit it)</li><li>No leaking-&nbsp; I would have to wear swimsuit bottoms over my underwear to ensure that I won't stain my clothes for the first few days of my period because my flow always started so heavy. Don't believe me? Ask my sister! :)</li><li>Protective and discreet- I would hate to wear dress pants and dresses while on my period because I could feel pads through my clothes if that makes sense and because I despise tampons and always had a heavy flow, pads were my only option!</li><li>No irritations or infections- Mind you, I am immaculate when it comes to my hygiene, so when I tell you I've suffered from infection and rashes due to the disposable pads believe me when I tell you it had nothing to do with my up-keep.</li></ol>\n<p>If you were like me and dealt with severe cramping and rashes, your disposable pads were probably to blame.&nbsp;Disposable pads use plastics, which block airflow to your vagina, and not surprisingly, can encourage a <a href=\"https://www.livestrong.com/article/154247-how-to-get-rid-of-rashes-caused-by-napkins/\">painful rash</a>.&nbsp;Disposables also use artificial fibers, which are super-absorbent but will also absorb all the moisture in your vagina, increasing your chances of severe pain and infections. These disposables pads are made with synthetic fibers, plastics and other harsh things harmful to your body and then is bleached to give you that appearance of purity and sanitation. Can you imagine putting bleach down there?! Well, if you wear disposable pads, that's exactly what you're doing!&nbsp;Add other synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances to the mix, and you've got a recipe for side effects like allergic reactions, hormone disruption, reproductive and gynecological disorders.&nbsp; It's almost crazy to believe that something so small can impact you in such a huge way! We always talk about what we put in our bodies but we also need to be mindful what we use on it especially during the time when your body is releasing toxins and waste out of you.</p>\n<p>So I know many are thinking \"How in the world is it cleaner than a disposable pad if you have to touch it?\" Well, my answer would be to each their own. For me, I've gotten over the whole \"ugh\" phase because I've changed plenty of diapers and soiled babies over the years. Plus with all of the incidents, I'm used to cleaning up after myself!       "title": "Becoming More Intentional",

But I have concluded that you becoming has nothing to do with a new year. It is actually a mindset. I've tried to get on the bandwagon of changing or becoming better at the turn of a new year, but fail miserably. My mindset or my will to do better must change in order to see change. Perfect example... I want to lose weight. Well, if I'm not willing to give up the cheesecake, I don't see that happening any time soon 😂. BUT I'm working on it! But in all honesty, I want to become more intentional about my goals and purpose. </p>\n<p>With the ways of the world and our timelines flooding with others \"successes\" it can become daunting to even focus on your goals because we're driven to compare ours with what we see others succeed in. Well in this season, I'm letting go of the status quo and am choosing to become more intentional with my life and how I live it.</p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p> “Intentional living is the art of making our own choices before others' choices make us.”&nbsp; </p><cite> <br><strong>Richie Norton</strong> <br></cite>\n</blockquote>\n<h4><br>Organize Your Thoughts Intentionally </h4>\n<p>One of my main focus this season is to spend more time in the Word and journal. I know I have said this before, but I'm a witness that journaling and writing, in general, is a great time stamp of what you've read and heard. I became more intentional about writing in 2017 during my church's year-end consecration. God spoke to me and I wanted to be sure I didn't forget what He said concerning me so I wrote it down. What I failed to do was keep that notebook to just journaling and not grocery shopping lists and child drawings. This time, I will be transferring my notes to a new notebook dedicated to journaling alone and disciplining myself not to use it for any other purpose. If my thoughts are organized, my life will benefit from it.</p>\n<h4>Organize My Daily Life Intentionally</h4>\n<p>My life is hectic and that is my doing. I am a home school mom.  I am also a dance mom and TaeKwonDo mom six days a week by choice. My children are thriving in their extracurricular activities, but I need balance. Although my children have committed this year to their activities, I need to keep in mind of my own goals and duties. Because I can't change their commitments this year, that means I need to use the time I have, for my own sanity. This means waking up early and completing tasks that will be impossible to accomplish while dealing with my children. Easier said than done, huh?! It is so easy to stay in bed til 7 even 8 am, but I have already began my days early and I can say, I've gotten a look of work done. Organizing my life intentionally is the need of balance and rest. It is easy to fill up my day with things to do, but taking care of self is most important.</p>\n<h4>Designing a More Simplistic Life</h4>\n<p>Because things are so hectic this extracurricular year, I'm looking forward to resting and better time management. With that being said, this year, saying no will be my anthem to a lot of people and opportunities. And I AM OK WITH THAT. I am ok with living my life with less and in return gaining so much more. My calendar does not have to be filled with unnecessary business. I will be focusing on my goals. Spending more meaningful time with family and close friends and making memories. You can't get much simpler than that! </p>\n<p>How can you make your life more simplistic? Minimalistic? Start now with making your life more meaningful. Before every action, there is a moment given to process&nbsp;the reaction. Make sure those moments given are used wisely and thought through.       "title": "Reflections and Moving Forward: 2018 in Review",
      "body": "<center>https://www.burnshomestead.com/files/2019/01/reflections-blog.jpg</center> <br/>HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!\n\nCan you believe it?!?!\n\n2018 is history!! This year has been a wild roller coaster ride and for many, we're wishing to throw the whole year away! LITERALLY\n\nI can list a handful of things that went wrong and add links to thousands of articles and newsfeeds of tragedies that occurred in December alone but I won't. We are all aware of the need but are we able to see the goodness and the hope of 2018?!\n\nIt's hard to think about it but I do believe it's possible!\n\nDecember 2017, my church was in consecration for the new year and God has revealed Himself mightily. I've been in scripture and have been hearing from Him and taking notes throughout the year. Many of the intercessory prayers for others and even mine personally have come to pass and I've been in spiritually bliss all year long! For the longest, I've questioned my relationship with the Lord and although, I haven't had any insistences where I \"slipped up\" but I felt as if there's was a void in the relationship. As with any relationship, there's a learning curve and true fellowship and I believe as I get older the more I am aware of my grey areas and ask for help!&nbsp;&nbsp;\n\n2018 has taught me so much and as I look back, I can reflect on the beauty that the year has provided. This year, I've learned and is still learning... the beauty of \"the process\".\n\nAs a stay at home mother and home educator, I can complain about my life and how stressful things have become for me in this season of my life... BUT!!! In this season, God has revealed purpose and revelation on my calling to Him and my family...<strong>IT'S MUCH MORE THAN ME</strong>! 2018 has shown me that even with my children being \"sheltered\" that they are not always under my care; that I still have to be mindful of their influence and peers even in places that I trust. I've also noticed how easily my children are distracted. There's no way in the world would I be able to protect their minds and spiritual innocence without them being in my care. My children enjoy dance, Taekwondo and church collectively but even in those settings, influence can occur. Conversation and questions always take place and there's always time for it in our home. For the longest, I've worried about them socially, but my children, if you have met them, are the most social kiddos you'd meet. They are also very aware of personalities and are very discerning. I am grateful for that and I'm also grateful of the realization to notice that even though there are influences, I trust the God in my children to be mindful of what they see, hear and do.&nbsp;\n\nI've also realized the need of fellowship and time set aside for it. For a few years now, we've noticed the need for others to truly get to know us...to break bread with us, so we make time for it. Yes, it has been some long nights of conversation and conviction but it has been worth it. We are aware of our influence and when an opportunity presents itself, we'll take it and lead those to the Source, which is Christ. We are indeed imperfect people but we serve a Perfect God, a Good Shepherd, A Good Good Father and we can only drop seeds and live our lives. Even in doing so, there has become some&nbsp;conflict, yet we will not settle or change our convictions while being mindful of the execution of our topics and conversations. Like our late pastor once said, \"Let your words be few and seasoned with salt because one day you would have to eat them.\" So we are sure to give what God gave us and lead others to the Word of God with any questions left on the table.\n\nSo as we close out the year and look ahead, reflect on your successes and evaluate your failures and disappointments. Even though tomorrow isn't promised, still prepare to do better and make things right by evaluating how your time is being used, assessing your relationships, and examining your motives and reasons behind your vocation and approach. In doing so, you are assured you're pleasing God and being a good steward of your time and resources. Let all your pursuits be pure and intentional.\n\nSo in 2019, I will continue to trust the process and live intentionally. One of my biggest regrets of this year was not journalling enough. God spoke all year long and instead of writing what I heard, I won't what I thought sounded good from Him.. missing the \"meat\" of it all. I dare not do that again. 2019 will be the year of reveal and restoration and I must journal the process. I will also incorporate more mind-mapping my ideas and plans. I am excited for 2019!!
