I’ve decided to take a look at a range of films, under the heading of ‘War Films’ and analyse why they stand out from the crowd. \n\nThe first film certainly isn't my favourite War film. But, it’s the first War film I’ve seen in a long time that has stood out to me. But, every once and awhile a film will come along that will bend what has been done before. Films such as *Apocalypse Now*, *All Quiet On The Western Front*, *Full Metal Jacket*, *A Thin Red Line* & *The Deer Hunter* to name but a few. My reasoning behind this is, that in a genre so awash with films all depicting similar themes and characters. These films managed to do something different. Something that audiences hadn’t seen before. Whether you like these movies personally or not isn’t the point. You can’t argue that they did something that viewers hadn’t seen before.\n\nAfter thinking long and hard about this, I am now going to put Dunkirk into this category. While still slowly building the tension using all the cinematic elements with absolute procession.\n\nThe Score by Hans Zimmer never yields from the moment the film begins. The quintessential ticking clock that Nolan uses is there but is heightened more than ever. Using Shepherd Tones – another quintessential Nolan trick -  adds to the ominous pressure that time is always against our characters.\n\nAdded to this is the Sound Design which is done with such accuracy and precisions that it pulls you into the story and leaves you feeling as if at any moment a screeching fighter plane will roar overhead.\n\nVan Hoytema's cinematography is the one thing that separates this from other Nolan films. Instead of what is usually fast-paced shots throwing us around the scenes. Hoytema's shots are longer, slower, they almost bring you into the frame, leaving you to contemplate everything that you've seeing. Over the years Hoytema has become one of my favourite Cinematographers working today. Choosing to have a non-linear timeline of the events serves to show that Nolan is a master when it comes to engaging an audience. \n\nThis could’ve been just another ‘man needs to get from point A to point B’ story. Breaking up the timeline, not only distorts the audiences perception of time and space, but it adds to the feeling that in this moment of horror and chaos, time for these soldiers moves differently. \n\n*“Unlike all other art forms, film is able to seize and render the passage of time, to stop it, and almost to possess it in infinity.” Andrei Tarkovsky*.\n\n**Spoiler Alert**\n\nA lot of people have made an issue with the fact that we never got to know any of the characters. This, more than anything, is what seemed to be the biggest complaint about the movie. I don’t disagree with  this totally. But, for me never understanding the characters is not the point. This is not a film about bravery or good versus evil. At its core, this is a film about survival.       "body": "Thunderheart is one of those films that I saw when I was very young and have kept going back to watch over the years. With each new viewing through my life, I would pick up certain things or understand more than I did on the previous viewing. For me, I think it always better to go into a film not knowing too much about the story. This leaves us in the hands of the filmmakers and can make for a more enjoyable experience.\n\nFor that reason, I’m not going to go into the nuts and bolts of the story, instead, I'll just give a breakdown of the elements that I feel make this film worth-another-watch.\n\nBelow is a quick snippet summary. If you want to know more just go to IMBD.\n\n*By the book, FBI agent Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) is assigned to investigate a murder of a tribal member named Leo Fast Elk, on run-down Native American Reservation in the Badlands of South Dakota. He’s chosen because he’s half Sioux Indian, a part of his life that Levoi has chosen to forget. He’s sent to work for another FBI Investigator named, Frank Coutelle (Sam Shepard).*\n\n*But once Levoi arrives he sees that things on the reservation aren’t quite cherry pie. The land is being disputed by a Native militia group known as ‘Arm’ who are ones being blamed for the murder of Leo. So, Levoi begins to have visions of his past, which really bums him out and messes with his head; then he teams up with a local Reservation Detective known a Walter Crow Horse (Graham Green). Based on the real-life events on the Oglala Reservation. These events at Oglala were previously made into a documentary called ‘Incident at Oglala’ which was also Directed by Apted. It really shows that Apted has immersed himself in this world. This is a side of America that we don’t usually see. He shows us the majestic images of the South Dakota Terrain, contrasted with the degradation and squalor of the Native people living within it.\n\n*\"Third World, smack right dab, in the middle of America. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it\"?\n\t\t\t\t\t                    Det. Frank Coutelle.* \n\nApted and Fusco never let the story become too political. Every character is here for a reason, and Apted has done a great job relating to the underlying themes or ideas that are running through the story. Even John Trudell’s character, Jimmy Looks Twice, who has only two or three pivotal scenes but manages to deliver the films driving message. \n\n*“We choose the right to be who we are. We know the difference between the reality of freedom and the illusion of freedom. There is a way to live with the earth and a way not to live with the earth. We choose the way of earth. It's about power”\nJimmy Looks Twice*\n\nAt the centre of this story is Det. Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer), a man who has tried to hide from his Indian heritage, not wanting to face the problems in his past. His character portrays the strongest reference to how America itself has faced its history, choosing instead to hide from it. \n\nAdd to this the chemistry between Walter Crow Horse (Graham Greene) and Det. Levoi is one of the best aspects of this movie. Both actors were coming off strong performances – Greene ‘Dances with Wolves’ and Val Kilmer ‘The Doors’. And because of this, the story is incredibly engaging and always asks questions of the audience. \n\nOne of the central question it asks of us is, in an ever-changing world, how do we address the injustices of the past, while trying to protect those more vulnerable within society. Which is it more important to live by, the law of the land; a land which was unjustly taken from previous generations, and a law which was then imposed on them. Or the soul of that land, something that we all must live by, the laws of which are bound in nature and are to be respected rather than enforced.\n\nAbove all, this is a really enjoyable film, with great performances and some excellent action sequences that never get overused. For a movie with a two-hour run-time, it never loses its pace. Sure, there are some small plot holes. One of the reasons I haven’t mention anything about Sam Shepard is that, for me, the character is never really fleshed out compared to the rest of the cast. But, even still Sheperd puts in a really solid performance, as always. \n\nBut, other than that, this movie is definitely worth-another-watch. \n\n*As I was drafting this, I heard the news that Sam Sheperd past away. In my opinion, he was one of the most underrated actors. He had an incredible career, and it saddens me that I won't see him in anything new. But, he left us with a great back catalogue of performances - Do yourselves a favour and watch 'Mud'.       "body": "As a director, I personally love working with actors. It's not easy but I find it to be the most creative job once you're on set. If you have a strong script and know your characters inside and out, it makes communicating with actors so much easier. \n\nI'm in the development phase of my first indie film as well.
