| body | Community-led rainwater harvesting, enabling people to unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good WaterHarvest was founded in 1987 by Dr Nicholas and Professor Mary Grey, in response to terrible drought conditions they witnessed that year on a visit to Rajasthan, NW India. Our first work was deepening 100 wells in Dudu Block, near Jaipur. Today, 31 years later, we’re still working in Rajasthan in the most remote areas, and our work has evolved to focus on rainwater harvesting. Water-Harvesting offers a low-cost, environmentally friendly strategy for people whose lives and future opportunities are crushed, simply by lack of water. The charity’s primary aim is to provide urgently needed safer drinking water. To do this we combine our technical expertise gained over many years, with local traditional knowledge, to capture and store the annual monsoon rain where it is needed. Simple technologies such as roof rainwater harvesting systems, underground water tanks with a catchment and land treatment are highly effective and offer a sustainable and viable solution for people living with water scarcity. Our work relieves poverty, improves health and livelihoods and sets women and girls free from daily water procurement. A lifetime of drudgery Although we’ve recently started work in Gujarat, our main focus remains Rajasthan. In the Thar Desert (which is known locally as ‘Marwar’, meaning ‘land of death’), persistent water scarcity and poor food availability have caused deep-rooted poverty. Women and girls spend a third of their time fetching water, usually from unsafe sources, which is head-loaded home. The burden causes untold anxiety and distress. Water-borne disease is widespread. Large-scale government water pipeline schemes ‘have failed to supply a single drop’ (our Field Report) – they simply do not reach the scattered villages where we work. People depend on the annual monsoon rains which are becoming increasingly unreliable; drought occurs four years in ten. In the Sambhar Salt Lakes area, the limited water has dangerously high levels of salinity and fluoride. Drinking it daily has irreversible health consequences including dental and skeletal fluorosis, recurrent malnutrition and diarrhoea which causes stunting in children – 38% of children in India suffer from stunting. Contaminated water is the biggest cause of India’s high child mortality. Certain regions of India, particularly the arid zones of Rajasthan, have serious fluoride problems, which has become a serious health hazard in many villages. WHO The people with whom we work are from the historically discriminated Tribal and Dalit communities who form an impoverished underclass. Devoid of education, abysmally low skills-base and zero credit rating, they are ill-equipped to deal with the challenges they face. Women especially suffer. Millions of Dalits in India still face discrimination, especially women and girls. Ban Ki-moon 2016 32.9% (1.4 million) of all children who die before their fifth birthday is in India. These children die as a result of poverty and water-related illness. UN MDG Report 2014 What we are doing to address this need To address the most urgent need for safer drinking water we are building water tanks and installing household roof rainwater harvesting systems. This year we plan to build 190, which will directly benefit 1,330 people by providing a source of drinking water at home. The roof systems cost £280 each; the tanks £450. In the last 31 years, we’ve built 1,695 water tanks, resulting in safer water at home for 11,900 people. This includes 7,200 children who are growing up with better health, and the increased chance of an education, especially for girls. Providing more and safer water is just the first step. Our work aims to build community capacity and increase peoples’ resilience. Our training and education programmes include water management to use water wisely (water-saving irrigation systems), revolving funds, improved and organic farming methods, gender equity, livelihood skills, cooperatives, and hygiene and sanitation. As a result of our work farmers are growing double the crops using half the water, and doubling their income. Debt and distress migration have reduced. We raise peoples’ awareness of their rights to government services and funding, offering help with form-filling to access employment and disability benefits, pensions etc. Our work strengthens communities and brings stability to people and the environment. All our projects are implemented by dedicated local Indian partners, and monitored by our own India Liaison office, headed by our Director Om Prakash Sharma who has been with us for 18 years. Although we’re not overtly faith-based, Gandhian principles underpin and guide all we do: our primary aim is to work alongside people – together we ‘sit on one carpet’. Only by counting the uncounted can we reach the unreached. MDG 2015 The future depends on what you do today. M K Gandhi Our current programme In 2018 we have nine projects in 90 villages with 45,956 people. Last year’s audited income was £290,480, of which 82% was spent on charitable activities. We rely heavily on individual donations and regular standing order donors and are fortunate to have many loyal supporters who have visited the projects and seen for themselves the impact of our work. We leverage an additional 91% from local and government funding in India, so every £1 we get is worth £1.91 to us. 2017 was our 30-year anniversary, and we celebrated working in 1,562 villages and providing a sustainable water supply for 1.6 million people. The need for work such as ours Global awareness is growing for the need for sustainable solutions to the issues surrounding water scarcity. Increasingly, water-related disputes are upsetting the harmony of regions. India faces a growing water crisis with demand outstripping supply: 15% of aquifers are in a critical condition and this is set to rise to 60% by 2030. Harnessing enough funds will enable us to continue our vital work to maximize the provision of water at home through low-cost, sustainable water-harvesting. The availability of enough water – or lack of it – impacts on every aspect of life. www.water-harvest.org [email protected] |

| body | I am in my 50's with grown-up kids and have been wondering what is to be present to who you are as you get older .....? So some observations to be self-aware of who you are as a human being and the possibilities that have been given to you by the divine maker! *Yes, I am changing*. — After loving my parents, my siblings, my spouse, my children, my friends, now I have started loving myself. *Yes, I am changing.* — I just realised that I am not “Atlas”. The world does not rest on my shoulders. *Yes, I am changing* — I now stopped bargaining with vegetables and fruits local vendors in my travels. After all, a few dollars more is not going to burn a hole in my pocket but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees. *Yes, I am changing* — I pay the taxi driver without waiting for the change. The extra money might bring a smile to his face. After all, he is toiling much harder for a living than me *Yes, I am changing* — I stopped telling the elderly that they've already narrated that story many times. After all, the story makes them walk down the memory lane and relive the past. *Yes, I am changing* — I've learned not to correct people even when I know they are wrong. After all, the onus of making everyone perfect is not on me. Peace is more precious than perfection. *Yes, I am changing* — I give compliments freely and generously. After all, it's a mood enhancer not only for the recipient but also for me. *Yes, I am changing* — I've learned not to bother about a crease or a spot on my shirt. After all, personality speaks louder than appearances. *Yes, I am changing* — I walk away from people who don't value me. After all, they might not know my worth, but I do. *Yes, I am changing* — I remain cool when someone plays dirty politics to outrun me in the rat race. After all, I am not a rat and neither am I in any race. *Yes, I am changing* — I am learning not to be embarrassed by my emotions. After all, it's my emotions that make me human. *Yes, I am changing* — I have learned that it's better to drop the ego than to break a relationship. After all, my ego will keep me aloof whereas with relationships I will never be alone. *Yes, I am changing* — I've learned to live each day as if it's the last. After all, it might be the last. *Yes, I am changing* — I am doing what makes me happy. After all, I am responsible for my happiness, and I owe it to me |

| body | Coming from a tech background, I’ve witnessed first-hand how the proliferation of new technologies has drastically altered all elements of our lives – this certainly extends to the third sector. For charities and donors alike, there's never been such a wealth of opportunities for telling new audiences about good and worthy causes through online platforms, social media networks and mobile technology. When spreading the word about charitable causes, I’ve always been particularly passionate about drawing attention to news stories of people doing great work at grassroots level in the community. With 15 years’ hands-on experience in various grassroots charities, I’m acutely aware of the impact small charities have made in the communities they serve. Moreover, the superb work done by individuals or small organisations is often pound-for-pound more effective than some of the bigger charities, which naturally have larger overheads and are less efficient. There are countless examples of small charities making an impact that goes well beyond what one may think is possible for an organisation their size. http://www.fredericksfoundation.org/ is one such case – this charity has given severely disadvantaged people an opportunity to go into self-employment by giving them micro loans and mentors to get them back on their feet. Seeing these people having a second chance to build their self-esteem, become self-sufficient, and ultimately contribute to society again is truly remarkable. The charity transforms people who would once rely on the nation’s support structures to into independent and successful professionals. In a similar light, I was proud to help a very good friend of mine's father as he led a project by the Diocese of Salisbury Education Committee to build the first ever secondary school in Juba, South Sudan. This school was created in 2010 for orphaned children, giving them access to British education; today it’s a thriving and successful independent school with around 1,000 students – evenly split between males and females – and a pass rate of 80%. I became part of the project when the site of the school was nothing more than a dust bowl, but some very committed people with a clear vision and a lot of hard work have made something incredibly special. The third and final example I’d like to share is that of a charity closer to my heritage. https://www.water-harvest.org/ is a small charity based in the UK, providing water harvesting and sanitation to the remote, rural communities of Rajasthan. The work done by this small charity has taken 1.2 million people out of poverty, at an average cost of £1.85 per person. I seldom see large charities able to make such an impact at such a cost effective rate. Again a small but dedicated community of trustees, volunteers and committed long-term donors has made this possible. From my time working with fantastic organisations such as three I have named here, I know all too well that financial inclusion and access to transparent finance at the lowest possible cost is a critical challenge for small charities and not-for-profit communities. That’s why, in 2014 when I discovered social donations platform Givey, I decided to invest. With a mission 'to make giving a small part of everyday life', Givey is a solution that is totally transparent – it is open to all donors and charities about how it makes it money. Embracing advances in mobile and social technology, Givey has created a suite of social sharing tools for the donors to effortlessly promote the causes they care about. What’s more, 100% of all the donations made via Givey’s platform goes directly to the charity, meaning that small charities benefit from every penny of someone’s valuable donation. We are embarking on the next step in its journey using the blockchain technology with https://giveynation.com/ to take this mission to its ultimate conclusion. Having seen the amazing work they do, I am determined to continue helping small organisations, whether that is charities, not for profits or volunteer organisations. To enable these groups to make a difference we need to create innovative technology, financing models, mentorship/volunteer structures and access to resources. Providing these things will make small charities even more effective while also enabling them to keep true to their causes without losing their "personal touch" in favour of a more corporate approach. If you want to help or participate in this mission then by all means get in touch; tell me what you would like to do to make a difference and why and I’ll try to point you in the right direction ! |

I became part of the project when the site of the school was nothing more than a dust bowl, but some very committed people with a clear vision and a lot of hard work have made something incredibly special.\n\nThe third and final example I’d like to share is that of a charity closer to my heritage. https://www.water-harvest.org/ is a small charity based in the UK, providing water harvesting and sanitation to the remote, rural communities of Rajasthan. The work done by this small charity has taken 1.2 million people out of poverty, at an average cost of £1.85 per person. I seldom see large charities able to make such an impact at such a cost effective rate. Again a small but dedicated community of trustees, volunteers and committed long-term donors has made this possible.\n\nFrom my time working with fantastic organisations such as three I have named here, I know all too well that financial inclusion and access to transparent finance at the lowest possible cost is a critical challenge for small charities and not-for-profit communities. That’s why, in 2014 when I discovered social donations platform Givey, I decided to invest.\n\nWith a mission 'to make giving a small part of everyday life', Givey is a solution that is totally transparent – it is open to all donors and charities about how it makes it money. We are embarking on the next step in its journey using the blockchain technology with https://giveynation.com/ to take this mission to its ultimate conclusion.\n\nHaving seen the amazing work they do, I am determined to continue helping small organisations, whether that is charities, not for profits or volunteer organisations. To enable these groups to make a difference we need to create innovative technology, financing models, mentorship/volunteer structures and access to resources. Providing these things will make small charities even more effective while also enabling them to keep true to their causes without losing their \"personal touch\" in favour of a more corporate approach.\n\nIf you want to help or participate in this mission then by all means get in touch; tell me what you would like to do to make a difference and why and I’ll try to point you in the right direction !",

| body | Blockchain Technology has many features and characteristics, that can be useful for many industries but the area that it is perfectly suited for and highly disruptive is the Giving marketplace. GiveyNation’s mission — “to make giving a small part of everyday living, globally” can be realised for the first time in history without all the incumbent issues related to trust, transparency, costs, auditing, scaling, real time tracking, and much more….that has existed in the charity, not for profit and local communities supporting good causes for a long time. Moreover, it can bring benefits to all the participants not just the not for profit organisations but anyone who is involved in the whole process — donor, recipient, volunteer, and fundraiser plus anyone that is identified in the community contributing to the good cause being realised.. Why Blockchain ? — The giving sector suffers from a number of issues highlighted which is perfectly addressed by these technologies:- 1. Compliance and Transparency These are the most important advantages of blockchain. They can help to eliminate the organizational silos within existing parts of the charity/not for profit sector to understand how to make the whole process more efficient on every level and the journey of the donation totally transparent without any 3rd party involved 2. Tracking and Tracing Due to the inherent blockchain software design, all the stakeholders can gain full access and track all the information concerning the donation journey, including all types of detailed information. 3. Reduction of errors in Auditing and Payment Processing Owing to a decentralised nature of blockchain , all payments or evidence based “smart contracts” can be uploaded onto the digital ledger where it will can be easily checked and verified by everyone involved in the chain 4. Fraud / Security Blockchain is “unhackable” It decreases the probability of any kind of fraud. Furthermore, it does not work on patches, which makes blockchain the securest in the market of cybersecurity initiatives. 5. Increased Trust Blockchain allowing donors to find all necessary information about the origins of the cause, money flow, criteria of what is going to be done and when. The process is digitally documented live 24/7 which consequently increasing their trust in the system. 6. Real-Time feedback Charities/Causes Recipient can respond to milestones they have agreed in real time. It can help various parties across the donation journey to analyze their work and to avoid several errors/provide corrective measures and give appropriate help if and when needed. This stops wastage and provides learnings for all parties involved. 7. Better Scalability Blockchain has the ability to help organisations to develop their charity/ causes by analyzing the market and responding to possible emergency surges Moreover, blockchain does not depend on politics/regulatory bodies, so it inspires good causes to naturally expand. There are many other benefits of blockchain not yet identified due to its infancy. Yet, the true scope of the blockchain technology is unlimited. It is absolutely a remarkable breakthrough in the history of technology evolution which may replace the internet in time. — more to come ! |

| body | Britain is unquestionably a giving nation, with £10 billion worth of charitable donations made in the UK each year. However, the vast majority of these donations go to large charities with over £5 million of annual income/donations – despite accounting for just over 1% of all charities across the country, these large charities consume 72% of donations. Givey came into existence to change all that. Having created a platform that makes it easier for donors to find and give to smaller charities exclusively c£1m (there are 175K of them in UK c£1 billion FYI) – while also making sure 100% of every donation goes to the cause – we have been supporting the organizations that are so often overlooked and under-supported. We are thinking of moving our platform onto blockchain which is aligned with our mission of total transparency and now traceability from donor to the actual cause with an exact view of the impact and what ACTUALLY money wise was received for the actual cause by the reciepent. What do people think ? – while also making sure 100% of every donation goes to the cause – we have been supporting the organizations that are so often overlooked and under-supported.\n\nWe are thinking of moving our platform onto blockchain which is aligned with our mission of total transparency and now traceability from donor to the actual cause with an exact view of the impact and what ACTUALLY money wise was received for the actual cause by the reciepent. \n\nWhat do people think ?\n\n |

| body | Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of love was not sentimental. It demanded that individuals tell their oppressors what they were doing was wrong. Article by Joshua F.J. Inwood, Pennsylvania State University is poignant to say the least. 2017 was a year of increased conflict in the United States. Many diverse communities were forced to confront a range of challenges related to anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia and anti-immigrant feelings. These challenges strike at the heart of what it means to live in a multicultural, democratic society. Yet, it is not the first time America has faced such a crisis – this divisiveness has a much longer history. I study the civil rights movement and the field of peace geographies. We faced similar crises related to the broader civil rights struggles in the 1960s. So, what can we draw from the past that is relevant to the present? Specifically, how can we heal a nation that is divided along race, class and political lines? As outlined by Martin Luther King Jr., the role of love, in engaging individuals and communities in conflict, is crucial today. For King, love was not sentimental. It demanded that individuals tell their oppressors what they were doing was wrong. King’s vision King spent his public career working toward ending segregation and fighting racial discrimination. For many people the pinnacle of this work occurred in Washington, D.C., when he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Less well-known and often ignored is his later work on ending poverty and his fight on behalf of poor people. In fact, when King was assassinated in Memphis he was in the midst of building toward a national march on Washington, D.C., that would have brought together tens of thousands of economically disenfranchised people to advocate for policies that would reduce poverty. This effort – known as the “Poor People’s Campaign” – aimed to dramatically shift national priorities to the health and welfare of working peoples. Scholars such as Derek Alderman, Paul Kingsbury and Owen Dwyer have emphasized how King’s work can be applied in today’s context. They argue that calling attention to the civil rights movement, can “change the way students understand themselves in relation to the larger project of civil rights.” And in understanding the civil rights movement, students and the broader public can see its contemporary significance. Idea of love King focused on the role of love as key to building healthy communities and the ways in which love can and should be at the center of our social interactions. King’s final book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?,” published in the year before his assassination, provides us with his most expansive vision of an inclusive, diverse and economically equitable U.S. nation. For King, love is a key part of creating communities that work for everyone and not just the few at the expense of the many. This attitude with regards to in UK's context is something we all should be concerned with the imminent Brexit, we could go down the same lines as the USA. Love was not a mushy or easily dismissed emotion, but was central to the kind of community he envisioned. King made distinctions between three forms of love which are key to the human experience: “eros,” “philia” and most importantly “agape.” For King, eros is a form of love that is most closely associated with desire, while philia is often the love that is experienced between very good friends or family. These visions are different from agape. Agape, which was at the center of the movement he was building, was the moral imperative to engage with one’s oppressor in a way that showed the oppressor the ways their actions dehumanize and detract from society. He said, “In speaking of love we are not referring to some sentimental emotion. It would be nonsense to urge men to love their oppressors in an affectionate sense[…] When we speak of loving those who oppose us […] we speak of a love which is expressed in the Greek word Agape. Agape means nothing sentimental or basically affectionate; it means understanding, redeeming goodwill for all [sic] men, an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return.” This is the context that's needed by all nations that are in conflict currently in the world. Why this matters now In the face of violence directed at minority communities and in a deepening political divisions in the country, King’s words and philosophy are perhaps more critical for us today than at any point in the recent past. As King noted, all persons exist in an interrelated community and all are dependent on each other. By connecting love to community, King argued there were opportunities to build a more just and economically sustainable society which respected difference. As he said, “Agape is a willingness to go to any length to restore community… Therefore if I respond to hate with a reciprocal hate I do nothing but intensify the cleavages of a broken community.” King outlined a vision in which we are compelled to work toward making our communities inclusive. They reflect the broad values of equality and democracy. Through an engagement with one another as its foundation, agape provides opportunities to work toward common goals. Social Inclusion: Community (representative of the ethnic mix of the local areas), localized focused, volunteering, charitable partnerships with Government and business working together is the way forward. Building a community today At a time when the nations feel so divided, there is a need to bring back King’s vision of agape-fueled community building and begin a difficult conversation about where we are as nations and where we want to go. It would move us past simply seeing the other side as being wholly motivated by hate. |

"body": "Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of love was not sentimental. It demanded that individuals tell their oppressors what they were doing was wrong.\n\n\n\nArticle by Joshua F.J. Inwood, Pennsylvania State University is poignant to say the least.\n\n2017 was a year of increased conflict in the United States. Many diverse communities were forced to confront a range of challenges related to anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia and anti-immigrant feelings. These challenges strike at the heart of what it means to live in a multicultural, democratic society.\n\nYet, it is not the first time America has faced such a crisis – this divisiveness has a much longer history. I study the civil rights movement and the field of peace geographies. We faced similar crises related to the broader civil rights struggles in the 1960s.\n\nSo, what can we draw from the past that is relevant to the present? Specifically, how can we heal a nation that is divided along race, class and political lines?\n\nAs outlined by Martin Luther King Jr., the role of love, in engaging individuals and communities in conflict, is crucial today. For King, love was not sentimental. It demanded that individuals tell their oppressors what they were doing was wrong.\n\nKing’s vision\nKing spent his public career working toward ending segregation and fighting racial discrimination. For many people the pinnacle of this work occurred in Washington, D.C., when he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.\n\nLess well-known and often ignored is his later work on ending poverty and his fight on behalf of poor people. In fact, when King was assassinated in Memphis he was in the midst of building toward a national march on Washington, D.C., that would have brought together tens of thousands of economically disenfranchised people to advocate for policies that would reduce poverty. This effort – known as the “Poor People’s Campaign” – aimed to dramatically shift national priorities to the health and welfare of working peoples.\n\nScholars such as Derek Alderman, Paul Kingsbury and Owen Dwyer have emphasized how King’s work can be applied in today’s context. They argue that calling attention to the civil rights movement, can “change the way students understand themselves in relation to the larger project of civil rights.” And in understanding the civil rights movement, students and the broader public can see its contemporary significance.\n\nIdea of love\nKing focused on the role of love as key to building healthy communities and the ways in which love can and should be at the center of our social interactions.\n\nKing’s final book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?,” published in the year before his assassination, provides us with his most expansive vision of an inclusive, diverse and economically equitable U.S. nation. For King, love is a key part of creating communities that work for everyone and not just the few at the expense of the many.\n\nThis attitude with regards to in UK's context is something we all should be concerned with the imminent Brexit, we could go down the same lines as the USA.\n\nLove was not a mushy or easily dismissed emotion, but was central to the kind of community he envisioned. King made distinctions between three forms of love which are key to the human experience: “eros,” “philia” and most importantly “agape.”\n\nFor King, eros is a form of love that is most closely associated with desire, while philia is often the love that is experienced between very good friends or family. These visions are different from agape.\n\nAgape, which was at the center of the movement he was building, was the moral imperative to engage with one’s oppressor in a way that showed the oppressor the ways their actions dehumanize and detract from society. He said,\n\n“In speaking of love we are not referring to some sentimental emotion. It would be nonsense to urge men to love their oppressors in an affectionate sense[…] When we speak of loving those who oppose us […] we speak of a love which is expressed in the Greek word Agape. Agape means nothing sentimental or basically affectionate; it means understanding, redeeming goodwill for all [sic] men, an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return.”\n\nThis is the context that's needed by all nations that are in conflict currently in the world.\n\nWhy this matters now\nIn the face of violence directed at minority communities and in a deepening political divisions in the country, King’s words and philosophy are perhaps more critical for us today than at any point in the recent past.\n\nAs King noted, all persons exist in an interrelated community and all are dependent on each other. By connecting love to community, King argued there were opportunities to build a more just and economically sustainable society which respected difference. As he said,\n\n“Agape is a willingness to go to any length to restore community… Therefore if I respond to hate with a reciprocal hate I do nothing but intensify the cleavages of a broken community.”\n\nKing outlined a vision in which we are compelled to work toward making our communities inclusive. They reflect the broad values of equality and democracy. Through an engagement with one another as its foundation, agape provides opportunities to work toward common goals.\n\nSocial Inclusion: Community (representative of the ethnic mix of the local areas), localized focused, volunteering, charitable partnerships with Government and business working together is the way forward. \n\nBuilding a community today\nAt a time when the nations feel so divided, there is a need to bring back King’s vision of agape-fueled community building and begin a difficult conversation about where we are as nations and where we want to go. It would move us past simply seeing the other side as being wholly motivated by hate.",
