| body |  **Action is the antidote for anxiety.** You can’t just think about what you want to do. You must take action. *Don’t try to control the uncontrollable.* There are many things that are out of our control, yet we spend a lot of time worrying about them or trying to control them. You can’t control the traffic for example, but you can control how you respond to it. You can learn better roads, or times to travel, or use the time to boost your energy with energy maintainers. Make sure you spend your time on the things that you can control. *Energy maintainers* Exercise, healthy eating, anything you need to do to keep your energy up. Sleep is very important for example. Prioritize time with people and things that makes you feel good about life. | body | .jpg) **How to listen?** *Focus your attention on the person who's talking.* Easy in theory, harder in practice. It takes an effort to block out both internal and external distractions. A headache? Did something happen at home earlier that still bothers you? Are you hungry. Those are internal distractions that takes away focus. Likewise, there are external distractions such as emails, phones, other people talking, room temperature, a dull speaker or other external factors that influence your ability to listen. Try to eliminate as many of these distractions as possible before you start, and be mindful of the others, try pushing them aside if they come into your mind. If you can’t get the distractions out of the way, perhaps you should re-schedule the meeting to a time where you can focus properly, if possible. *Remain mostly silent.* Not completely silent, but remember that you’re there to listen. Use emotion mirroring, maintain eye contact, some encouraging words such as “aha”, “go on”, “tell me more” could be used to keep the person talking. Sometimes you can paraphrase or use open ended or clarifying questions. *Maintain a neutral frame of mind.* Bias or judgement doesn’t help you in listening to what the other person is saying. Quite the opposite. Keep an open mind. *Listen with your eyes.* Remember that a lot of the communication is nonverbal. Look at the posture of the person speaking, what are they doing with their hands, where are they looking, do they seem uncomfortable. Don’t over-interpret nonverbal communication, but pay attention. Sometimes people say one thing with their words and something else with their body. You’re not part of the conversation and most of what’s being said will be forgotten in less than a few hours, some even after a few seconds. A typical example of this is listening on a meeting you don’t want to be in, you listen to the person speaking, but your mind is somewhere else. *Attentive listening* This can also be called “Listening with the intent to understand”. You are engaged in the conversation and try to understand, but you’re not fully committed. You’re not assigning meaning to the words, at least not all. *Active listening* This is the most effective listening. You’re focused on the speaker, you concentrate on the words and have the intention to fully understand the whole message, both verbal and non-verbal. They have your full attention. | body | I agree with much of what you're saying. Some sort of moderation system should be set in place. I'm pretty new here, but I can already see the problems you're describing. There are so many people hoping that this will be a "get rich quick" scheme. There was an earlier attempt called Tsu which failed spectacularly some time ago, for the exact same reasons. |

| body | .jpg) **What's stopping you from being an effective listener?** *Assumptions* The old saying goes: When you assume, you make an ass of u and me. Don’t assume that you know what the person wants to say. This is related to the speed gap. Control your impatience. Make sure you value what the speaker is saying. *Distractions* Most places are busy, lots of people, phones, computers etc. There could be other conversations going on in the background that steals focus, and you could also be distracted by more personal things, like hunger, personal problems, pain, exhaustion etc. Try to be aware of all these distractions, and in being aware you can ignore or at least tune them down. *Emotions* Maybe what the person is saying is upsetting? Control your emotions. You can be sympathetic without being emotional. Maybe you don’t like the person talking? Or disagree strongly with what they’re saying. Try to focus on the message and to understand their point. Give the person speaking the benefit of the doubt. *Speed gap* You process information three to four times faster than you hear it. That makes it easy to get distracted, or to let your mind wander. Be mindful of this and notice when it happens. You can also use this “spare capacity” to get more information by listening closely to the tone, or observing the body language of the speaker. Don’t use this time to prepare a response, because you have most certainly jumped to conclusions if you do. *Time constraints* Remember to set aside time enough. Everyone is busy with all they have to do. So are you, but try to visualize the benefits of truly listening to someone, and the consequences of not listening. Especially in the longer perspective. *Ulterior motives* Make sure that you don’t let your motives get in the way of listening. Perhaps your motivation to help, impress or influence stops you from focusing on what the person is saying. These motives aren’t bad in themselves, but you should ensure that they don’t hinder you from listening and giving the speaker full attention.
