| body | In my estimation, there will be about 4 currencies with really high evaluations in the future. Here they are: 1. Bitcoin - Why? Because it's useful? Not compared to the cryptos of the future. You can't run the world economy on it. Bitcoin is mostly and will more and more be merely a symbol. It's easily authenticated, it's the **ultimate collector's item.** It's the first blockchain, and there can be only one. 2. Speed - Whatever network allows for the fastest (as in transactions per second) transfer of value will be the one that is used by the machines. Think Iota's tangle or Hashgraph technologies; fast distributed ledgers: not blockchain (though who knows with lightning networks and side chains, etc). There are 7 billion people on the planet, but there are a whole lot more machines and a great many more that can be built and and start doing economic work. For this vast web of interconnected devices, automated labor, **speed is king.** Whatever can send the most amount of data the fastest can coordinate efforts and knowledge faster - will be more intelligent. The economy is an informational structure, the faster the information transfer the more valuable the network. 3. Smarts - We want and will need programmable money. The currency that is able to do **smart contracts,** (especially the one that can do them across chains) will be very valuable in the future. It probably won't be one and the same with the speed demon above because that kind of extra computation takes time. More likely, there will be a smart currency that manages other currencies. Think Ethereum. 4. Anonymity - It also takes time to do the computational work to be anonymous with your money, so this one will probably be a separate network as well. Think Monero. We, as humans, and someday we as machines will always want the **ability to be anonymous,** even if typically we don't feel the need to eat the extra time-consuming overhead. Having the option to opt out ensures a baseline amount of freedom. These are the 4 main (as opposed to niche) features cryptocurrencies provide in my mind. Of course, technically the value of any currencies is directly derived by the people using it. So this post is really a prediction about what people will use in the future. |

The economy is an informational structure, the faster the information transfer the more valuable the network.\n\n3. Think Ethereum.\n\n4. Having the option to opt out ensures a baseline amount of freedom.\n\nThese are the 4 main (as opposed to niche) features cryptocurrencies provide in my mind. Of course, technically the value of any currencies is directly derived by the people using it. So this post is really a prediction about what people will use in the future.",

| body | In my estimation, there will be about 4 currencies with really high evaluations in the future. Here they are: 1. Bitcoin - Why? Because it's useful? Not compared to the cryptos of the future. You can't run the world economy on it. Bitcoin is mostly and will more and more be merely a symbol. | body | I was having a [conversation](https://philosophy.liberty.me/forget-taxation-we-can-build-a-universal-basic-income-on-crypto/) with someone about a potential Universal Basic Income distributed ledger implementation and he brought up an interesting point. He basically said, "if you're going to have UBI on the blockchain, you need to make sure everyone is equal so you have to check their identity in order to give them an address on the network and stuff." I didn't like this. Do you? Does that feel like the future to you? Bureaucratic, administrative, functionary, authoritative? Good, God! Gross! No, no, no. There's a better way. Now I'm not saying bureaucracies don't have their place, but when there are ways to avoid it, lets! And how do we avoid it? Mmmm, now we have to get creative. But let's find a context for our creativity, say... the UBI coin concept from my example above. How might we solve that particular problem without falling headfirst into an Orwellian administrative hell? Maybe it's simple. Maybe we don't have to make it perfectly distributed and always equal. Perhaps instead we could bake into the UBI design itself some forces that tend toward equality but never actually get there. Think about computers. You're going along, everything working perfectly in its proper place, and there's a problem: 1 bit gets changed on the hard drive from a 0 to 1 where it's not supposed to be, and guess what - EVERYTHING CRASHES! The brain is so powerful because shit happens all the time and it's all good, honey badger don't care. This ability to be robust in the face of problems is in part a direct result of a system that has relinquished control and can 'go with the flow' as it were. That's what is needed in situations like this; the UBI coin needs to be designed in such a way that we humans can make up the difference. Here's what I said in my conversation with this guy: > For instance, let’s say we don’t limit the number of addresses, but instead, we limit the number of UBI coins to say… 20 billion coins that cannot be divided. > > Then we say if you have at least 1 UBI coin in your address then you can spend the coinage... So, just by making the coin atomic you provide a force to the economy to equally distribute it among the population. Would you rather let someone starve to death or give them one of your 10 UBI coins? I’d give it away. > > This may be my inner anarchist shining through, but we don’t need to check papers and verify identity and all that government shit. Let’s not force it, just engineer it to let it happen. Its what I call “Blockchain Zen” the design itself is the elegant first mover. Let our humanity shine through the technology, don’t try to guarantee it. > > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBOgzQKKA8o That's what Blockchain Zen is to me - the expression of our humanity through technology. The cessation of desire to control everything down to the bit. In order to build a future worth living in we need to let our technology help us grow in charity and goodwill towards each other. Let it facilitate our improvement as well as our comfort by simply letting go of our heretofore incessant need to control everything. |

| body | There's been a lot written about 'governance on the blockchain' but it seems to me that the usual way of approaching the topic is to essentially say, "What are the constiuent elements of our governing system today? And how can we use DLT to do it efficiently and distributedly?" That is BOOOOOORING! Let's try something new. I'm arguing that in the future the government will be the economy and the economy will be the government, and instead of trying to design a governance system we ought to just try to imagine what that'll look like. Ok, so what is an economy anyway? Well, in this context I think we have to consider it an informational structure. Everyone knows that the pricing mechanism is a way to transmit information throughout the economy. That's what value is - information. Ironically this is really the thing an ineffective government lacks: information. There's too much data for a small group of legislatures to understand, too many contexts in which the answers change too dramatically, thus, you get regulation that's inadequate and outdated the instant it goes into effect. The economy is information and the government is the restriction on action. The two ought to be one and the same; our restrictions on behavior ought to be informed by our highest and best understanding, and our understanding should push us to explore all the implications and boundaries of our behavior. So now that we've deduced the direction we're headed let's conjure up an image of what that might look like (in its most basic structure, of course). Imagine we had a token that served as a proxy for other coins. This means our coin would merely be an accounting for what backs it: a basket of other coins. Now, currently, you'd need to build this system out as a union of decentralized and centralized technologies because you will need to hold the private keys to the tokens backing your token somewhere safe. But let's ignore that physical constraint for a moment and go full theoretical. What would a 'proxy-coin' like this do? It would serve as a fund or index for crypto in general. Say it's backing was dynamic and allocated by those that owned the coin - then you'd have a prediction market where if a certain coin lost valuation in the proxy coin it's value in terms of fiat would likely go down. If the proxy coin got popular enough it might even have a calming effect on the highly volatile crypto markets in general. With this simple structure, we've achieved the beginning of intelligent informational structures - controlled (yet in time, unpredictable) feedback loops. Now allow me a quick trip to left field if you will. Once the economy, built on better hardware (distributed ledger technology) achieves the ability to more directly affect its growth and direction by its acquisition of all governing responsibilities in the society it'll essentially be an intelligent organism, perhaps even conscious or self-aware. But that kind of thing is like I said out in left field and we should really concern ourselves with what the more immediate future looks like. So once a dynamically allocated crypto-value-proxy token is created, (a coin backed by other coins), we can use that to build more complicated feedback loops in the economy. Recently I wrote a post on liberty.me ([Forget Taxation! We Can Build a Universal Basic Income on Crypto!](https://philosophy.liberty.me/forget-taxation-we-can-build-a-universal-basic-income-on-crypto/)) proposing a way to build a Universal Basic Income on top of this structure. The idea boils down to allowing the dynamic allocation of said proxy coin to be controlled by the coinage of the coin itself (or a derivative UBI token, either way). And how hard was that? We built a way for the economy to observe (and therefore predict) it's own proportionate value components (coins) and we can derive UBI basically for free. What _can't_ we do with a little imagination? What I've attempted to describe here is not a new kind government, but rather that the implicit government that pervades the economy today under the layer of explicit nation-states eventually will subsume the responsibilities of those nation states and when that happens all governance will be implicit to the valuation structures in society. We'll eventually live in an imperceptible, and immediately responsive web of implicit value-governance: the synthesis of information and control. We, as a society need to stop thinking of the blockchain or any distributed ledger technology in the same old ways we have thought about everything else. We ought not to merely recreate the same structures (in this case governing structures) on the chain, but rather we need to attempt to see _how_ this new technology could alter and destroy our perceptions of old, outdated and now antiquated structures in society. |

If the proxy coin got popular enough it might even have a calming effect on the highly volatile crypto markets in general.\n\nWith this simple structure, we've achieved the beginning of intelligent informational structures - controlled (yet in time, unpredictable) feedback loops.\n\nNow allow me a quick trip to left field if you will. \n\nSo once a dynamically allocated crypto-value-proxy token is created, (a coin backed by other coins), we can use that to build more complicated feedback loops in the economy. \n\nRecently I wrote a post on liberty.me ([Forget Taxation! \n\nAnd how hard was that? We built a way for the economy to observe (and therefore predict) it's own proportionate value components (coins) and we can derive UBI basically for free. What _can't_ we do with a little imagination?\n\nWhat I've attempted to describe here is not a new kind government, but rather that the implicit government that pervades the economy today under the layer of explicit nation-states eventually will subsume the responsibilities of those nation states and when that happens all governance will be implicit to the valuation structures in society. We'll eventually live in an imperceptible, and immediately responsive web of implicit value-governance: the synthesis of information and control. \n\nWe, as a society need to stop thinking of the blockchain or any distributed ledger technology in the same old ways we have thought about everything else. We ought not to merely recreate the same structures (in this case governing\nstructures) on the chain, but rather we need to attempt to see _how_ this new technology could alter and destroy our perceptions of old, outdated and now antiquated structures in society.",
