| body | I wanna write my quick thoughts on where should we head as a society. It seems to me that no matter how many wars are there, how many lifes have fallen over the last decade, there are people who still hate other people based on skin color, religion, place of birth or politican views. I recently found a great passport picture that could describe its owner from a modern world. # 1. Birth place: Earth I think this is a great eye-opener. We all are from the same planet. Everytime anybody thinks he's special, he can look up in the night and remember that there are hundreds of thousands of stars like our Sun with billions and billions of planets surrounding them. We are only a tiny piece of the Universe and we should value what we have. # 2. Race: Human > "We hate because we are ignorant. We are a product of ignorant people, who have beeen taught an ignorant thing, that there are 4 or 5 different races... There are not 4-5 of races on the Earth.. There is only a one race in the Earth .. the human race.. And we all are members of this race." This is how the racism was destroyed in 1 minute in this amazing speech, which all of us should see and teach our children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s55caVptnA # 3. Religion: Love IMHO, love is the true religion. Don't get me wrong, I'm not agaist any peaseful religion out there, but people tend to hate people from other religion based on false thoughts or mistaken actions. When you deep dive into most of the religions, we will find that many of them want to spread love and compasion; not hate and arogancy. I think, one of the greatest religious representative out there these days is Dalai Lama .. it might be also worth to watch Dalai Lama's speech on happiness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUEkDc_LfKQ # 4. Politics: Freedom I honestly think politics is broken in most of the countries nowadays. Every party is watching their own business only pretending they wanna do good for people and the country. We've seen this all over the world from developing countries to "modern" west countries like USA, France or UK. The recent BREXIT is only one proof of that. On the other hand, travelling through our beautiful planet is something that will make you more open to new things, including food, culture or religion. There are many things that comes with travelling, which is also described in the article "13 Amazing Things Travel Does To Your Brain" on Buzzfeed. You can read it here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/anniedaly/travel-makes-you-a-better-person # What are your thoughs on these principles? ### If you like this article, consider upvoting it. You can even sign with him a Letter of Intent or Future contract which can help you raise external money if that's what you are after. |

| body | I’m often asked what the biggest mistakes were as we were building up our startup Localization Guru. As this is our first project with global ambitions, we made a LOT of them, trust me. ## No. 1 — We felt into the startup fashion bubble There are startups everywhere. If you open a new vegetable shop on the corner, you’re most likely to call your small business a startup :-) Even if those two things are really far apart. But let’s face it, that’s the reality right now. So we were chosen for this startup incubator in Budapest called Digital Factory. The program in itself was good; the founders are actually very experienced entrepreneurs with some big exits. But we were proud d*ckheads with our ears closed and we thought that we knew everything. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really important to trust yourself, but you have to listen and learn. And you have to learn a LOT. So try to stay humble and listen more. ## No. 2 — We focused on raising money rather than making revenue You’ve probably heard of this already, but I have to tell you that this is a HUGE problem. Almost all startups out there are just chasing external capital. So let me tell you how we screwed. We raised 30k when we were accepted to the acceleration program. And we burnt all of the money while doing just about nothing. Yes, we published our first business model that was nothing like the market wanted. We’d worked on that for 4–5 months and we had to shut it in 2 months after publishing. It was a disaster. At that point, we decided to turn the business concept completely upside down and to build a new MVP as simple as it could be. And it was a really good move (at least something finally :-). ## No. 3 — First we built, then we sold I must say that this is the biggest lesson I learned last year. Most of you will probably argue that first you have to build something to sell it, not the other way around. Ok .. I get it .. I thought so too .. but you know what my opinion on that now is? BULLSHIT!! Now we’re extending our portfolio of services and I already have tons of ideas of what to implement next. But we’ll sell it first (well, at least pre-sell). Doing so will save you a lot of time building something nobody wants. ## No. 4 — Get the f*ck out of your country right now If you are building a startup with global ambitions, your local mentality won’t help you. I have to say that we were not really guilty in this one. We’re a team from Slovakia and one of the founders went right away to Austria for 4 months. Then we went into the incubation program to Hungary for another 3 months. And then we were about to start a cooperation with our next investor to be in the Czech Republic. It was really interesting seeing all the different mentalities of the people who are living just a few kilometers apart (Bratislava to Vienna, 70km; Bratislava to Budapest, 200km; Bratislava to Prague, 300km). Get out of your country and talk to people from different parts of the world, with different cultural backgrounds and different ways of thinking. I honestly think that it could only help you. ## No. 5 — The more money in your bank, the less you focus on making it We went bankrupt almost twice before being accepted into the incubation program and after burning all the money from it. I noticed an important pattern when it happened. When we had the 30k in our bank account, we focused on activities that generated us NO revenue at all — going to startup conferences, beer-networking and doing things like banners, website redesign and other crap. When we were just about to run out of all of our money (last 1k on the bank account) we were finally forced to think how to make money. And our brains suddenly started popping all kinds of ideas of how to make money. I started to drive UBER; we were thinking of starting a dropshipping-based e-shop and all kinds of other crazy ideas :-) But apart from these crazy ones, we also managed to get on the right track with our project and we started generating revenue. From that point, we’ve successfully bootstrapped and we are still growing. ### If you like this article, consider upvoting it. It helps me create more content that you like. |

| body | # How to find a market with less competition When we entered the online entertainment industry last year with our translation services company, I didn’t know how *awesome decision* it was. Not for the reason that we found quite a few of customers over there but for the fact, that we are going after a smaller piece of the whole puzzle. Let me explain. Let’s imagine the business segment as a puzzle. Every segment is made from smaller or bigger parts of the puzzle. Eg. the industry we are working in has these big pieces, that major companies are going for: * Affiliate networks * Mobile traffic * Desktop traffic * Billing companies * Advertisement networks They may be several more, but these are the biggest pieces of the puzzle making the most money. If you are just starting out as an entrepreneur and you have a lot to learn, going for these pieces will be probably a really tough job. If your pockets aren’t full of money, you won’t probably end-up as a winner. > Then there are products or services which are necessary for the “big companies”, but there’s not so much money in it. I’m talking “only” several millions dollars annually. These are: * Marketing services * Legal services * Translation services * Event-organising services * Merchandising services * Big-data analyses services * etc. Choosing one of such pieces of the puzzle could bring you great values both short-term and long-term. Let’s look into it more closely. ## 1st) The competition should not be that crowded. Most companies providing such services are probably not fully focused for that particular segment, so if you really suit your branding and services for this niche, your journey will just get easier. Surely, you still have to provide the best services you are able to, but you can quickly become the GO-TO service provider in that niche. ## 2nd) You build up your business relations once and you benefit from them over and over again. While you build up the first company, you get to know your customers better and you will find another pain which makes them bad headaches. This opens you the possibility to either extend your services or to build another company. ## 3rd) You will NOT waste several years of your life and you will build your entrepreneurship skills step by step. If this is your first company, you probably won’t end up having a $100M company just now, but your 2nd or 3rd company might end up being one. Most people are trying to become the next Unicorn, but a lot of them just waste many years ending up with nothing, not even a smaller sustainable business. I don’t want to discourage you to go after your dreams. If you’re the next Elon Musk, you go and do the next Tesla or SpaceX right now! But if you want to build more companies and enjoy the journey while still being young, you can consider this approach. > PS: If you think you have a product/service that could bring value to some of the companies, left me a comment.. ### If you like this article, consider upvoting it. | body | We’re just hiring our 2nd operations manager for our project Localization Guru and I came across some people who would be excellent for sales or as account managers. When I told them that idea, I started to notice a terribly wrong pattern what people think about selling. I don’t know how is it in your country but back here in Slovakia when you say “to sell” everybody suddenly imagine the sleek salesman in a suit who’s trying to sell you every sh*t that makes him few dollars into his pocket. After being in the B2B (more likely P2P, person to person) sales for last 6–7 months as a co-founder, let me tell you what is terribly wrong with this thought. Maybe you’ll argue that half a year is quite a no-experience to speak out, but with this approach, we’ve actually got 1000%+ month-to-month growth at the end of the year without any marketing or extensive sales effort. The other months were as good as 30%+ to 200%+ month-to-month revenues so I guess, we do something right. ## So how exactly did we manage to do it? It’s quite simple.. don’t push it and be a “real human” first. As we were talking (not only to) potential customers, we did listen first. We cared (but really, honestly cared) what he/she is doing, how is it going, what does he/she struggles with and then we try to provide some value first. > Don’t push it and be a “real human” first. If we were talking to an account manager from some affiliate company, we tried to introduce her to the few contacts we got; or if was a company running a new marketing campaign we gave him a feedback on how do we like (or don’t like) the campaign idea and what would we do to make it better. That’s certainly not a new approach. Before they used to call it “customer first” approach and Gary Vaynerchuk is also talking about it a lot. And it’s a bigger truth than you probably realise. Now we still continue with such approach and it brought us even more value from different partnerships and synergies we’ve created even if it’s not our core business. As we help more people, connect them to relevant business partners, distributors or customers, our business network spread really fast and so do amazing references. And that’s what drives our growth even more. To get back to the point — to be a salesman does not mean to try to sell every sh*t in your sales portfolio but to deliver value first. Even if you can’t do any sale with that very person. But if you put a real value into the relationship first, you’ll probably end up with more value that you’ve expected. Maybe not on that particular day or the day after, but the effect will get back to you. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.. leave a note below. ### If you like this article, consider upvoting it. It helps me create more content that you like. |

| body | These days, all around the world there is a huge rush to raise money for your startup. Even here in Slovakia — CEE Europe, there is a big bubble around the “startup thing” and it became something like a fashion. Having a startup these days is something like wearing Adidas or Nike several years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I really admire people working on themselves and trying to start their own thing. But starting a company, creating real value, prove your product or service is really a different thing than just having an idea and try to raise money. I see a lot of people here in Slovakia chasing the few investors like 2 freaking weeks after they have “an idea”. Yep, we have such people too. Very few people really get into the work, do their research and try to gain at least some revenue before raising capital. And the other bad part is that many of them think that they will build next Facebook or Twitter just like that. I tell you what: building a company is much more than writing a freaking web application, and trust me — we have also taken our time to realise that. Example: You want to build next @Slack? There’re plenty of tutorials out there to build Slack-like app in a few days. Take this one for example https://thinkster.io/angularfire-slack-tutorial#introduction > So why there’re not dozens of Slack-like successful companies?! Because building a web app and building a company are two different things. But back to the point. We’re building @AdultTranslations (http://adult-translations.com) - a translation service for the adult industry. And we’re doing really, really well. We are few months in the adult business and we already have connections to several of the biggest companies in the industry. And yes, you surely know some of them ;-) We’ve just returned from the very special conference which took place in Bahamas, which was limited to only 75 people at maximum. And it was strictly invite-only conference for the CEOs, owners, presidents and directors of the biggest companies in the industry. I’m really not sure how we did it, but we’re able to get an invite to the conference. After only few months in the industry, we’re starting cooperation with some of the biggest players, one by one. One step at a time. We’re doing several thousands in revenue monthly, but we’re still not profitable yet and we’re running out of our saved money. We could have chased some investors and spent 3–6 more months raising capital, or we can somehow get through few months and focus on building the revenue from all the leads we have and relationships we gained. And here’s where UBER come in. I’m starting to drive UBER to get through these few difficult months to save us from raising money. Not only to save equity, but also to show that there’s other way to build a company rather than raising capital. > So don’t fall into the “raising money” trap and start to think what you could do, if there were no investors. If others can do it, you can do it too! I wish you all the best. |
