Quizá el más condecorado en su país durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. El 28 de septiembre de 1918 Tandey y Hitler estaban atrincherados en la localidad francesa de Marcoing en plena batalla. Los hombres salieron de sus trincheras y empezaron a combatir unos contra otros. Los británicos lograron poner en fuga a los alemanes. Sin embargo, Tandey, observó a un soldado alemán tan cerca de él que incluso pudo ver a los ojos. El alemán, herido, no era capaz de alzar su rifle siquiera. Tandey se lo pensó un momento y, finalmente, bajó su arma. Los hombres salieron de sus trincheras y empezaron a combatir unos contra otros. Los británicos lograron poner en fuga a los alemanes. Sin embargo, Tandey, observó a un soldado alemán tan cerca de él que incluso pudo ver a los ojos. El alemán, herido, no era capaz de alzar su rifle siquiera. Tandey se lo pensó un momento y, finalmente, bajó su arma.
