| body | There is probably a generational shift, but I work with a bunch of millennials who are drinking the same kool-aide our parents drank. As I head deeper into my thirties I see all those non-conventional, non-conformists settling into these patterns. I am no exception in a lot of ways. I see all these articles panicking about slow economic growth, consumerism declining, obsession with thinks like organics and experiences over cheap things, etc etc. The paradoxical spoiled millennials who don't want enough stuff. I like that this discourse is happening, by the time the millennials are grandparents I hope these consumerist values are as antiquated as buckles on your hat. |

| body | Do you think this is in any way generational at this point? I keep seeing articles about how millennials are not following the same market norms their parents did, such as home and car ownership. I also see people arguing that the only reason millennials aren't buying all the things they're "supposed to" is because they inherited a shit economy that doesn't afford them the same luxuries previous generations enjoyed. Another thing I think about is the idea of moving away from the city because it's okay to work there, but you wouldn't want to live there, otherwise known as white flight. Do those people realize that if they all just lived closer to where they worked, that they would make up their neighborhood just the same? And if they do insist on living in the suburbs, why isn't carpooling obvious? Everybody is headed to the same place, but for some reason they all have to be in control of their own individual vehicle with 3 empty seats. It's madness. |

| body |

At birth, we are thrust into this dimension naked, wet, and confused. As we gain our bearing, we can change the naked and wet part, but we remain confused until we exit through the other side of existence. When we are old enough to walk and talk one of the prevailing myths given to us is, "You can be anything you want." This is in reference to occupation, or the role we will take in the capitalist market. So before we can comprehend the concept of money, bills, or taxes the seed is planted for us to pick from the plenitude of jobs. Soon after the myth is introduced, the question starts coming from all directions, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Some answers are tropes. My generation grew up with "doctor" or "lawyer" as the quintessential "good jobs". If a kid was particularly adventurous, he might say something like "firefighter" or, more unrealistically, "astronaut". Little were we prepared for the reality. We were inflating the population exponentially and those "good jobs" are of finite quantity. Not only that, but there are many more essential jobs that our parents would have steered us away from. When asked what they want to be, no kid ever says "janitor". And if they did, the follow-up would be a perplexed, "...but why?"

Those from a middle class background had education heavily pushed on them as a way to satisfying employment. The idea was that a college degree would confer upon us some quality of special-ness that would make us deserving of a "good job". This model broke down when it became clear that modern universities exist to extract money through federally subsidized loans, Pell grants, and unpaid sports entertainment while the students drink themselves into oblivion for four to six years. Unless you did some serious research into the labor market before starting college, you would have no idea what to pursue a degree in. Most of us fell into the trap of more bad advice, which was "follow your passion". "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life!" That saccharine sentiment is ironically true, because if you follow your passion to its academic conclusion, you will most likely find yourself unemployed and unemployable. The demand for humanities and arts majors isn't exactly brimming. If you end up with one of those degrees, you may find yourself toiling in retail or the service industry. Those are labor sectors the notoriously under-employed view as the undesirable result of their own failings. But is that attitude accurate? And why does it exist?

The economy has shown that there is simply not a job waiting for every college graduate in their field of study. There is, however, a glut of low-paying, low-skilled work for giant corporations in the service sector. There are also many jobs available in the public sector that don't necessarily require a college education. So if the economy's needs lie in unskilled customer service work rather than nebulous office work, why is the latter valued over the former? Why do executives, bankers, and administrators command more respect in society than maids, servers, and cashiers? Please do not accuse me of setting up a false dichotomy. I understand that there are many trades and specialties in between. My point is that there is a certain segment of our population working at jobs that carry a stigma. Many people find themselves in jobs that they feel are beneath them. Part of this attitude is self-inflicted, and part comes from external sources. We didn't create this world, but we have to navigate it. We find ourselves in a situation where we all are forced to obtain money somehow. The way any one of us obtains our money should not be a source of shame. Collecting garbage is not anyone's life ambition, but it is a vital position in our community. I am advocating that someone's job is simply an economic function that should not define their identity.

No job is deserving of respect. No job is not deserving of respect. A job simply is. It is a neutral shuffling of matter. Every person is deserving of respect regardless of their title or job description. Capitalism is not collapsing rapidly, so each of us has to struggle through it the best we can. There are far more undesirable jobs available than so-called "good jobs". But that is only a subjective perception. The objective activity of modern labor is neutral and far easier than what prehistoric humans had to endure. The desirability or lack thereof attributed to any given position is bestowed by status. Since capitalism is a competition driven system, we are constantly encouraged to compare ourselves to others. One of the first things people ask upon meeting is, "What do you do?" On the surface, it is a question used to get to know someone, but its implication is a comparison of status. The question also encourages us to identify with our occupation more than we should. In Be Here Now, Ram Dass answers this question by saying, "I do Sadhana, work is a thing that happens." This answer illustrates that each individual is so much more than their economic activity, which is mostly forced upon them by circumstance. With constant shallow small talk, we actually never really get to know a person. We should be much more interested in what they think about than how they pay their bills.

By divorcing our identity from the activity we participate in to accumulate currency, we relieve ourselves of a certain alienation described by Marx. Work is a thing that happens and almost nobody is satisfied with it. When we stop seeking satisfaction from it, or learn to be satisfied in knowing we are contributing to the function of this ant hill we call society in our own way, we ease the burden of status seeking, which will always be a losing proposition. A lot of marketing dollars are spent to convince us that we are inadequate, that we are missing something. Refuse to play that game. Treat everyone around you in a way that allows them to do the same. Appreciate everything anyone does for you in the name of a paycheck. Don't give your fellow workers a hard time at their job. Don't look down on anyone because they do a thing that requires less education or is paid less than what you do. Start to view the world as a cooperative effort rather than a rat race. We are all in this together, my friends. And the only way we will defeat the tyranny of oligarchs is to realize that and act accordingly.

|

| body | I agree with you. The problem with that idea in practice is that most people don't have the luxury of sitting around wondering about how to innovate the economy. They are dead tired from working so hard. Under Maslow's hierarchy of needs, they are barely satisfying the safety needs. I believe this is a planned feature of capitalism. Keep people desperate and exhausted, and they won't even notice how badly they are being exploited, let alone plan to counter that exploitation. |

|

"body": "
\n

\n
At birth, we are thrust into this dimension naked, wet, and confused. As we gain our bearing, we can change the naked and wet part, but we remain confused until we exit through the other side of existence. When we are old enough to walk and talk one of the prevailing myths given to us is, \"You can be anything you want.\" This is in reference to occupation, or the role we will take in the capitalist market. So before we can comprehend the concept of money, bills, or taxes the seed is planted for us to pick from the plenitude of jobs. Soon after the myth is introduced, the question starts coming from all directions, \"What do you want to be when you grow up?\" Some answers are tropes. My generation grew up with \"doctor\" or \"lawyer\" as the quintessential \"good jobs\". If a kid was particularly adventurous, he might say something like \"firefighter\" or, more unrealistically, \"astronaut\". Little were we prepared for the reality. We were inflating the population exponentially and those \"good jobs\" are of finite quantity. Not only that, but there are many more essential jobs that our parents would have steered us away from. When asked what they want to be, no kid ever says \"janitor\". And if they did, the follow-up would be a perplexed, \"...but why?\"
\n
Those from a middle class background had education heavily pushed on them as a way to satisfying employment. The idea was that a college degree would confer upon us some quality of special-ness that would make us deserving of a \"good job\". Most of us fell into the trap of more bad advice, which was \"follow your passion\". \"If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life!\" That saccharine sentiment is ironically true, because if you follow your passion to its academic conclusion, you will most likely find yourself unemployed and unemployable.
\n
\n
No job is deserving of respect. No job is not deserving of respect. A job simply is. It is a neutral shuffling of matter. Every person is deserving of respect regardless of their title or job description. Capitalism is not collapsing rapidly, so each of us has to struggle through it the best we can. There are far more undesirable jobs available than so-called \"good jobs\". One of the first things people ask upon meeting is, \"What do you do?\" On the surface, it is a question used to get to know someone, but its implication is a comparison of status. The question also encourages us to identify with our occupation more than we should. In Be Here Now, Ram Dass answers this question by saying, \"I do Sadhana, work is a thing that happens.\" This answer illustrates that each individual is so much more than their economic activity, which is mostly forced upon them by circumstance. With constant shallow small talk, we actually never really get to know a person. We should be much more interested in what they think about than how they pay their bills.
\n
\n
",

| body | Thank you for writing on this important issue. It is unfortunate that more people don't realize how the illegal activities of government officials in Texas are abusive, ineffective and wasteful. The time and money it takes to defend preposterous and illegal activities such as these in the face of blatent civil rights violations is a waste of energy and a disgrace to everyone involved. I hope it drives people top the polls to vote out these monsters. |

| body |

Texas Senate Bill 4 is a disaster. Proponents claim that it is in the best interest of the state of Texas and its citizens. That is false. It will make police detention more common for the average person. It will lead to longer traffic stops with more intrusion by the state into citizens’ private affairs. The so called “papers please” law will also allow more potential for abuse of power, such as racial profiling. The law is unpopular with human rights advocates as well as police themselves. Several police departments and sheriff’s offices from the largest cities in Texas have spoken out against the law.

One complaint against SB 4 is that state and municipal law enforcement agencies have no legal jurisdiction to enforce immigration regulations. Texas is the seventh state to enact its own law regarding illegal immigration. It joins Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, and Utah in its attempt to combat illegal immigration through state statute. The problem with this approach is that immigration is the purview of the federal government. All six immigration statutes that precede SB 4 are under judicial review and face the possibility of being overturned by the courts. The reason for this is that the state has no authority to enforce federal law. By passing these types of laws, states are asking their local police departments to do the job of the federal government.

Proponents believe that aggressively enforcing immigration laws will curtail crimes such as gang activity, human trafficking, and drug smuggling. However, that is backwards thinking. By trying to verify citizenship and deporting every undocumented migrant they come across, police are going to be less focused on those serious crimes. There are already laws against gang violence and human trafficking. Police are free to pursue the arrest of those violating those laws. And if those they arrest for existing laws happen to be in the country illegally, they are free to refer that person to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But looking for the immigration violation first before the commission of a crime over which the police would normally have jurisdiction is a woeful waste of time and resources.

This leads us to the next complication imposed by SB 4. City police departments are notoriously understaffed. Asking police to determine the immigration status of all those they come into contact with and then detaining those deemed to be here illegally is yet another diversion of manpower and resources that would be better spent elsewhere. Austin is one of the main so called “sanctuary cities” that prompted the consideration of this bill and one of its leading opponents. The Daily Texan reported in January 2016 that Austin Police Department had at least 118 vacancies, leading to delayed response times and burdening officers with forced overtime. Dealing with immigration issues would further exasperate this problem in all of Texas’s metropolitan areas.

Fear of deportation will make law-abiding people avoid police at all costs. This means crimes will go unreported. Victims will be afraid to seek help. Witnesses will be unwilling to come forward. Attempting to enforce immigration laws will make the police’s job that much harder. Many people in low income areas are already suspicious and distrustful of police. How can a state legislature not see that they would be putting their law enforcement at a disadvantage with this new law?

Many interactions with the police, the most common of which being a traffic stop, are, by nature, intrusive. Many of us have been on the side of the road with a cop asking us all sorts of things that are none of their business and have no pertinence to the reason they stopped us. “Where are you going?” “Where are you coming from?” “Is there anything in the car I should know about?” What do these things have to do with my supposed failure to use a turn signal? Checking your immigration status is yet another violation of every citizen’s rights. It makes no difference if you are here from another country legally or illegally or if you are a natural born citizen. The very nature of asking you to prove your citizenship is a violation of your constitutional rights.

While many police officers are coming out in opposition to SB 4, there are still others who will be all too enthusiastic to enforce it. Police abuse of power is a real problem. By giving police more powers, you increase their potential for abuse. Racial profiling is ostensibly illegal, but it still happens. To apply the law equally, every single person who comes into contact with the police would need to have their citizenship verified. This would be cumbersome to the police and its entire infrastructure. It would be frustrating and invasive for the private citizen. So in actuality, the law is likely to be selectively enforced. This selective enforcement will necessarily bring about unfair racial discrimination. People will be checked on the basis of their skin color, their command of the English language, their accent, or because they just plain don’t seem like they are from “around here”. We need to be looking for ways to reduce subjectivity in law enforcement, not introducing new forms of it.

In an attempt to appear fair, police in Tuscaloosa, Alabama courted international embarrassment while enforcing their own immigration law in 2011. Detlev Hager was taken into custody in Tuscaloosa after presenting police with his German driver’s license. Nobody can accuse them of bigotry or xenophobia if they enforce their ludicrous law on a white man, right? The problem was that Hager is an executive of Mercedes Benz, one of Alabama’s largest employers. Mitch Ackerman, executive vice president of Service Employees International Union had this to say of that incident, “It is really ironic and showed the absurdity of this law. Here you have a foreign employer who has brought many workers jobs ... caught in this web that is supposed to bring jobs.”

The border is a social construct, and one that ultimately does more harm than good. Future generations will look at the idea of national borders as one of the cruelest fictions we have imposed on society. The government is saying, “Sorry, kid. You were born on the wrong side of my imaginary line. So you stay on that side of it. I don’t care how good it is here or how bad it is where you came from. I don’t care that the poor conditions on your patch of dirt are largely my fault. We don’t want you here.” I believe that human migration will one day be seen as an essential right. Until that day, we should not be burdening our first responders with the responsibility of enforcing the border.

|

\n
",
