Amazon is too expensive for the Dow: Amazon and Jeff Bezos might be conquering the world, but there's at least one exclusive club they haven't gained entry to: The Dow Jones Industrial Average.\nAmazon (AMZN) is one of the most consequential companies on the planet, so it stands to reason that it'd be in the world's most famous stock market index.\nYet Bezos shouldn't be waiting by the phone for an invite to the iconic yet quirky Dow. That's because the 122-year-old index is price-weighted, meaning the influence of each stock is based on its price tag. Cheaper stocks have little sway, and vice versa.\nUnless Amazon executed a rare stock split, its share price of $1,700 would give the e-commerce giant too much power in the index. That's 46 times the price of Pfizer (PFE), the cheapest stock in the 30-stock index after General Electric gets the boot on Tuesday. GE's puny stock price of $13 made the storied company nearly irrelevant in an index of which it was a founding member.\nThe rules that govern the Dow have also made it impossible for other extremely important companies to join the index. That includes Google owner Alphabet (GOOGL) and its stock price of nearly $1,200. And then there's Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA), whose Class A shares weigh in at $287,000 apiece.\n\"If you put in Berkshire Hathaway, everything in the Dow could go to zero and we'd still be up that day,\" said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices, which owns the Dow.\nSilverblatt conceded that it's possible an adjustment will be made in the future to open the Dow up to Amazon. However, he cautioned against radically changing an index that's been around since 1896.\n\"This thing has worked for over 120 years. You don't mess with it,\" Silverblatt said. The problem is that it used to be commonplace for companies to split their stocks when they got above $100, to make them cheaper for individual investors. That practice mostly stopped a decade ago due to the rise of ETFs, which allow investors to pool their money together to buy stocks. Individual stock prices don't matter as much anymore.\n\"The pressure on companies to split their stock has gone down dramatically,\" said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.\nStill, the fact that Amazon, an $800 billion behemoth that has disrupted bookselling, department stores, cloud computing and groceries, can't be in the Dow speaks to the limitations of the index.\nThat's why sophisticated investors like hedge fund and mutual fund managers pay way more attention to the broader S&P 500.       "body": "Nearly ever present by the President's side, perhaps no one is more responsible for the Trump agenda than Stephen Miller.\nPresident Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order aimed at keeping families together at the border, but not before several days of public outcry over the administration's \"zero-tolerance\" immigration policy that had resulted in thousands of undocumented children separated from their families at the border.\nSome of the Trump administration's most controversial and chaos-inducing policies can be traced back to Miller, including the travel ban and the firing of former FBI director James Comey.\nAnd the latest immigration debacle is no different.\nOriginally from California, the 32-year-old senior Trump adviser has been part of the Trump team since January 2016, where he acted as Trump's warm-up act during the primary and general 2016 election.\nDuring the campaign, Miller would consistently address the crowds at Trump rallies before the then-candidate would take the stage.\n\"Everybody who stands against Donald Trump are the people who've been running this country into the ground,\" Miller said at one campaign rally in Texas. \"Everything that is wrong with this country today, the people opposing Donald J. Trump are responsible for.\"\nBut amid the administration's tumultuous first year that has seen historic levels of staff turn over, Miller has remained a constant -- even outlasting fellow travel ban architect and former head of Breitbart, Steve Bannon.\nThe Teenage Years\nMiller has peddled the role of provocateur since his teenage years in California. In high school, he ran a student government campaign that included a controversial speech about the role of janitors at the school, according to a recording obtained by Univision.\n\"Stephen's whole view of immigration stems from high school,\" Adrian Karima, a lawyer who sat two desks away from Miller in AP Government. \"His negative views of immigration started in high school and just grew over time.\"\nIn 2002, when Miller was 16 years old, he penned an opinion editorial for the Santa Monica Lookout that argued \"very few, if any, Hispanic students\" make it to honors classes because the school provides a \"crutch\" to those who don't speak English by ensuring \"all announcements are written in both Spanish and English.\"\nWhile at a week-long summer program for rising high school seniors where attendees built their own governments, Miller reportedly ran for a seat on the Board of Supervisors. His stump speech included a proposal for infiltrating enemy groups with a \"black ops\" force. However he is at odds with the President over his recusal from the special counsel's Russia probe. He also has repeatedly defended the administration's hardline immigration stances.\nMiller's role shaping immigration policy continued when he assumed a position in Trump's White House -- and lawmakers have taken notice.\n\"I've talked with the President, his heart is right on this issue, I think he's got a good understanding of what will sell, and every time we have a proposal it's only yanked back by staff members. And as long as Stephen Miller is in charge of negotiating immigration we're going nowhere,\" South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham told reporters in January. \"He's been an outlier for years.\"\nIllinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin had a similar sentiment in January, telling reporters, \"Any effort to kill immigration reform usually has Mr. Miller's fingerprints on it.\"\nNow, Republican lawmakers face an uphill battle to pass their latest immigration bill. It also represents the culmination of years of campaigning by rights activists who have sometimes been arrested and imprisoned for their efforts.\nMona Al-Fares, a doctor, was in her car before midnight, waiting for the ban to lift before setting off through the streets of Jeddah with her husband and children.\n\"I feel like I'm surprised -- am I really driving in my own country? I feel happy, relieved.
