      "body": "<html>\n<h1>In a 3 part series I take a look at what cryptocurrency technology can do for politics and how it could literally take over the world!</h1>\n<h3>In <a href=\"https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@racitup/why-politicians-should-be-scared-of-bitcoin-part-1\">Part 1</a> I took a quick look at what we know as representational democracy, its history and some of its imperfections.<br>\nIn <a href=\"https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@racitup/why-politicians-should-be-scared-of-bitcoin-part-2\">Part 2</a> I introduced direct democracy and how it is already being used today.<br>\nIn this final part I will talk about how blockchain and other technology is already being used to change politics.</h3>\n<p>Direct democracy, by definition, hinges on the ability of the electorate to vote. However the main problem facing any voting system is a matter of security and fundamentally trust. In the current world of representational democracy, governments usually pay a large number of volunteers to gather, sort, count and check the ballot papers. Sometimes an electronic counting system may be used too. But every stage of the voting process is carefully designed so that any individual cannot affect the vote count, and hence the required trust is kept low. But no process is perfect, and all it takes is a rogue group of organised individuals to affect the process. This clearly isn't an efficient way of conducting regular votes either.</p>\n<p>If you then put voting online it opens up a whole new set of issues. Traditional websites are a centralised technology, with one organisation having control over the content and database, even if there are multiple instances spread over the globe for resilience. This means that any traditional voting website is vulnerable to tampering. Whether it be through external hacking or internal influence. Every organisation will claim that they are at the cutting edge of security technology and processes, but fundamentally the technology is flawed. When all is said and done the data is sitting in a database on a hard disk and somebody, somewhere has access to change that data and is vulnerable to being influenced. To use the words of poet Alexander Pope - To err is human (we all make mistakes).</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/50/Bitcoin.png\" width=\"530\" height=\"526\"/></p>\n<p><em>Bitcoin Logo</em></p>\n<p>This is (finally) where bitcoin comes in. Bitcoin uses a <em>blockchain</em> which fundamentally is a decentralised database of independently validated transactions. It is decentralised because there are many independently owned and run networked computers running the same software called nodes. And each node has an entire copy (or at least has validated an entire copy) of the blockchain. The blockchain itself is just a long list of all transactions that have ever happened and set up in such a way that anyone can check it is correct. Additions to the blockchain are agreed by consensus, or in other words, everyone has to agree that the transactions are correct mathematically. In that sense the protocol itself is democratic!</p>\n<p>Importantly, the transactions in the blockchain could represent almost anything, whether it is transferring money for an item, or (aha!) voting on an issue.</p>\n<p><strong>But hang on a minute, what's to stop a rogue group of organised individuals from running nodes and messing with the software? To err is human, haha!</strong></p>\n<p>They can and have! The good news is that it is easily detectable and causes what is known as a <em>hard fork</em>. So even if the evil Macrosloth put all of their computing power behind a new copy of the software which falsified transactions, everybody else would know and would ignore their contributions. It also costs the rogues money since each contribution to a blockchain takes a considerable amount of processing, which in turn uses electricity and computing equipment.</p>\n<p><strong>Cool, so when's the first blockchain vote?</strong></p>\n<p>Well someone's already there! <a href=\"https://followmyvote.com\">Follow my vote</a> is developing a blockchain system that is being promoted for use in all of the US's votes that I touched on in <a href=\"https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@racitup/why-politicians-should-be-scared-of-bitcoin-part-2\">Part 2</a>. If you want more information please visit their site; it has a wealth of information (including videos!) and is a really nice website.</p>\n<p>If Follow my vote is accepted in the US, politicians had better watch out. I foresee the technology growing and being combined with websites like <a href=\"https://www.loomio.org/\">Loomio</a> and <a href=\"https://www.change.org/\">Change.org</a> to create a platform that could literally take over the world. Although in <a href=\"https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@racitup/why-politicians-should-be-scared-of-bitcoin-part-2\">Part 2</a> I portray these websites as a solution to direct democracy over representational democracy, in reality with direct democracy you can still have a balance between the two, like Switzerland has. If you want to vote for a person to represent you, you can. If you want to vote for a particular solution to an issue, you can do that too. All it takes for the issue and solution to be proposed and for enough people to back it.</p>\n<p>Plus, don't forget that another major cornerstone in a country's power besides politics is its economy and financial system, much of which could be (<a href=\"https://www.verdict.co.uk/bitcoin-countries-digital-currency/\">and is being</a>) replaced by cryptocurrency. I believe that over the next century the world will see a revolution in decentralisation and true and direct democracy. Exciting times!</p>\n</html>",

The most common form of this that you've probably heard of and maybe participated in is a referendum. This is a vote on a particular question that is put to all people (the whole electorate) directly.</p>\n<p>That probably sounds like a scary prospect, right? I mean politicians are people that do this sort of thing day in, day out and are presumably experienced and trained appropriately? From day to day you probably have little clue what issues there really are unless you've heard it on the news or read it on social media. Even less would you know the intricate details about the relevant laws, policies and background to a particular issue, so you probably wouldn't feel too confident about making a decision.</p>\n<p>Though you'd probably have an opinion. And you'd definitely have an opinion and some background on the issues that interested you. Take this article right here. You're probably reading this because you're interested in Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, politics or all of the above? And by reading this you're informing yourself on how they might be linked which may help to reinforce or change your opinion. Direct democracy can be viewed as the same thing; people voting on the issues that interest them, like you might on TV talent shows, Big Brother or even Facebook today.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.pexels.com/photos/267432/pexels-photo-267432.jpeg\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\"/></p>\n<p><em>Facebook HQ in Palo Alto</em></p>\n<p>But direct democracy today goes deeper than supporting your favourite singer or cat picture.</p>\n<p>For instance Switzerland, alongside it's representational system, has mandatory referendums on changes to its constitution, and a petition of 50,000 signatures can cause a referendum on any law change. This system has been in place since the mid 1800's and can be traced back to 1291.</p>\n<p>The closest the UK comes to this is the petition website, where 10,000 signatures gets a response from the government; 100,000 signatures and the petition is considered for debate in Parliament. Hardly any form of real power, but given enough backing this could bring about a referendum on a subject.</p>\n<p><strong>But what about Brexit, that was a referendum, right?</strong> It was, but in the UK referendums are called for through an Act of Parliament (so largely at the discretion of the government) and the result is non-binding anyway (though if ignored is probably revolution-worthy).</p>\n<p>27 states in the US also have forms of direct democracy through initiatives and referendums, which work in a similar way to the Swiss petitions.</p>\n<p>But to me this all sounds a bit last-century, gathering signatures, even on a website. Where's the website tailored specifically to all issues in my local area, county (state), country or even world? Where can I read the whole, unbiassed story to an issue, with citations of the data, reports and expert analysis? Where can I share my opinion and vote on the proposed solutions? It doesn't exist. The closest you'll get today is by reading various news, government and independent informative sources, trying to pick out the fake or distorted information as you go, and then sharing your opinion on social media.</p>\n<p>There are some other promising ideas though.</p>\n<p>Take for instance <a href=\"https://www.loomio.org/\">Loomio</a> and <a href=\"http://democracyos.org/\">DemocracyOS</a>. These are both commercial, yet open-source, solutions for coming to a democratic outcome on an issue online. They're meant for relatively small groups of people who you probably already know, like at work.</p>\n<p>But imagine these put on steroids. A kind of <a href=\"https://stackexchange.com/\">Stack Exchange</a> crossed with <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org\">Wikipedia</a> and <a href=\"https://steemit.com\">Steemit</a> where you could debate <em>any</em> issue. Not only could you dial in to the issues that interest you, but you'd have all the information you'd need to form an educated and mature opinion. You could propose your own issues, solutions to issues, up-vote other people's ideas and come to a decision right there. There might even be independent contributors conducting studies, providing reports, analysis and even simulations of proposed solutions (for example economic and social simulations). Imagine that! Testing out solutions before its even implemented. &nbsp;This is stuff most politicians couldn't even comprehend, let alone entertain or support. Why? But I'm not alone. The recent unconvincing election results in the UK and Germany with Theresa May and Angela Merkel securing a majority through coalition (42.3% and 32.9% respectively) illustrate the divide. Not to mention the uneasy Brexit referendum result (51.89% leave) and Trump's unexpected US election win (57%).</p>\n<p>But my concerns go deeper than who get's elected. To me elections and our system of representational democracy is at best a multiple choice question where there is no \"D. None of the above\" choice. And at worst is an accepted system of corrupt, untrustworthy, irrational and unaccountable overpaid puerile autocrats.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Palace_of_Westminster%2C_London_-_Feb_2007.jpg\" width=\"3200\" height=\"1261\"/></p>\n<p><em>Palace of Westminster - UK Houses of Parliament</em></p>\n<h2><strong>But democracy has got us here, it can't be that bad!</strong></h2>\n<p>...I hear you cry, and you're right. Democracy was invented in Athens by the Greeks two and a half thousand years ago, but ironically was a direct democracy (more on that later). Since then many different democracies have come and gone all over the world. The gradual fall of the monarchy in the UK can be traced back to the Magna Carta in 1215, but democracy as we know it today arguably started as recently as 1832.</p>\n<p>But think about it. Back then there were far fewer people, most of them were not educated, transport and hence communication was difficult and slow. Having a system of representatives for each area made a lot of sense, and to a certain extent still does. That is if those representatives could be trusted to actually represent the people's views and not get carried away with their own opinions and agendas.</p>\n<p>One problem that I believe representation suffers from is that you are not only electing a person but also a political party. Each political party comes encumbered with a set of policies, some of which you may and may not agree with at the same time. So immediately your decision boils down to selecting the best of a bad bunch. And even if your representative and party become elected, all too often they can't be trusted to deliver on their badly researched and thought-out promises anyway.</p>\n<p>The point is that representational democracy no longer represents you, it asks you to buy into one of its few malformed and impersonal offerings.</p>\n<h2>Okay, so what's this gotta do with Bitcoin?</h2>\n<p>Well before I get to Bitcoin, I first need to tell you a bit more about direct democracy, that I mentioned was the earliest form of democracy.
