These aren’t the things you need to fill in the answers for, or even necessarily provide the answers for within the story: but knowing these answers will leak into your writing and make the characters stronger.\n\nI’m adding to these periodically when something new dawns on me, so the list might grow over time.\n\n**Goals and desires**\nWhat do they need?\nWhat do they want?\nWhat do they fear?\nWhat motivates them?\nWhat would make them happy/content?\nHow do their goals change over the course of the story?\n\n**Agency**\nWhat are they willing to sacrifice everything for?\nWhat is the one thing that makes them from random bystanders into the main characters?\nHow far are they willing to go what are they likely to do, to achieve those needs/desires/goals? What actual actions do they take when something threatens what matters to them, or stands in the way of them and their goals? \nThere’s also a nice exercise here: try writing down what you know of your story as a list, using [character]+[active verb] (ie “Reiner executes magical heretics”, “Fin shadows the prince and hides in his luggage to get from point A to point B”, etc. Be specific: “learns”, “discovers”, “must”, and such words don’t count as specific active verbs in this case)\n\n\n**The fun stuff**\nWhat must their sacrifice in order to reach their goals?\nWhat’s the worst thing that can happen to them\nAt the beginning of the story?\nAt a mid-point/turning point?\nAt/near the end of the story?\nAnd/Or, why is the inciting incident (the event that kickstarts the story) the worst thing that happens to them at the time?\nWhat is completely out of their control?\nWhat kinds of mistakes are they likely to make? \nWhat kinds of failures are they likely to face?\nWhat are their weaknesses?\nWhat do they regret?\nWhat makes them cry?\nWhat is it that they definitely don’t want to do?\nWhat is the one thing that would break them?\n\n*Are you a writer looking for other writers? I think that it is essential that you love your own writing. Take a min or two before you write to truly appreciate what you have written, even if it isn't your best work it is still your work. It's a bit hit or miss as far as critiques go, but once you crit others and get kind of known, it can be very good.\n\nAbsolute Write (http://absolutewrite.com/forums) is more general writing advice - based, but it also has a Share Your Work forum, where people share their stuff and get them critiqued. It's one of the harshest one out there that I know of, at least in its query letter, novels, and SYW fantasy sections (where I spend the most of my time).\n\nCritique Circle (http://critiquecircle.com/) is one I've only recently joined, but have been eyeing for a while. They give a stronger focus on critiquing, it takes more to earn enough points to post your own stuff, and it also has some cooler options for premium members (but not as drastically better as Scrib). It's a favourite of the others in my writing group, and we're all aiming to be/on their way to being professional writers. Its crits are mostly very good, especially once you've established your presence a bit.",
