| body | Predictive maintenance is one of the oldest and most tested uses cases for the Internet of Things (IoT). For years, we’ve been able to analyze incoming data from sensors embedded in machines and make decisions about whether or not maintenance activities should be executed. Typical scenarios have focused on things like wind farms, oil rigs, and fleets of trains. And while there’s plenty of excitement and new developments in these areas, what’s grabbing a lot of attention today is how predictive maintenance can be applied to new scenarios. For example, in an earlier blog, I talked about predictive maintenance for autonomous vehicles – how sensors can send out data on the status of parts and components, allowing manufacturers to analyze this data to predict part failure and, thus, avoid breakdowns. Yet, even this scenario keeps us in the realm of machines – because, as sophisticated as it may be, an autonomous vehicle is still a machine. But what if we could take the same general idea of predictive maintenance for machines and apply it to our bodies? Call it preventative maintenance for people – or just predictive healthcare. The reality is that in many ways, we’re already there. Understanding in context One of the advantages of predictive maintenance for machines is that incoming data about what’s going on in the moment can be analyzed in the context of historical data about the same machine. Let’s say an HVAC machine on the top of a hotel in Seville – where I live – sends out a high-temperature alert. In and of itself, this may be cause for concern. But when you realize that the machine sends out the same alert every month at the same time – well, maybe it’s not so concerning. Maybe the HVAC unit runs continuously for eight hours on the first Monday of every month to help cool a large conference room for the packed monthly meeting of the Seville Dog Walker’s Association. Or maybe there’s another reason. The point is that in such a scenario, the high temperature alert is understandable and predictable in context – and thus of little concern. It would be nice if we had something similar for healthcare. More than a snapshot On a typical trip to the doctor, you sit in the waiting room for 10-15 minutes with other people, some of whom are likely sick. When you finally see the doctor, you’re thinking of the next appointment you have across town in 30 minutes, so your anxiety levels go up. My sister Mary was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure because her blood pressure measured 150/89 in the doctor’s clinic. The doctor advised her to get a connected blood pressure cuff and take regular measurements. When she did, it turned out her blood pressure was 108/75 – completely normal. She was suffering from what doctors call White Coat Syndrome. Her high blood pressure reading was understandable in the context of her being in a doctor’s office, much like the HVAC data was skewed by a temporary situation. Wouldn’t it be great if the doctor had more than a snapshot of (often misleading) blood pressure data to work from? Wouldn’t a whole bunch of relevant historical data be better? With the smartwatch on my wrist, I can now share three years of data with my doctor. Now she can see things in context and treat me more effectively. I think it’s only a matter time before her office can take my sensor data in automatically, over the cloud. This will make my yearly checkup more productive. Instead of figuring out what the problem is (if there is one, hopefully not), we’ll be able to focus on what to do about it. A business network for health As with so many things IoT, this is only the beginning. But let’s step back for a moment and look at the notion of an asset intelligence network (AIN). Think of it as a business network application. All of the data (metadata, specifications, bills of materials, etc.) that goes into the creation of a device (compressor, coffee machine, car, etc.) can be stored in a central location. When connected to the asset intelligence network, the device can push out real-time data that describes its state at any given moment. When the device owner allows access to this data, the manufacturer can then analyze it in conjunction with other data from other devices – making product improvements that can then be pushed out by way of the same asset intelligence network. In fact, nothing is stopping device owners from sharing their data with anyone they wish – such as a service vendor or an insurance company. If a device goes out of tolerance for some reason, the service vendor could receive a notification and schedule an appointment to service the device automatically. Or an insurance company could set rates according to actual device usage data. Returning to the theme of health, what if we took this idea of an asset intelligence network and applied it to our own bodies? What if we had a “people’s intelligence network” where a device like my smartwatch publishes my health data into a trusted cloud application? When my device senses high blood sugar, for example, this data is analyzed, not only in the context of the unique moment mixed with my own personal health history, but also in the context of similar data from potentially millions of people. Based on this much larger dataset, the network could then contact my service vendor – in this case, my doctor – and make an appointment if necessary. Yes, this would be convenient. But more importantly, it would move us away from making medical decisions based on poor data and the intuition of physicians, toward something often heralded but seldom achieved – real evidence based medicine. |

| body | How Future Batteries Could Save Civilization. The future of humanity may well depend on our ability to move away from our dirty and dwindling supply of fossil fuels as fast as possible. To steer ourselves and our planet in the right direction, we have to find another way to feed our civilization’s need for a reliable supply of energy. Nuclear power may well be part of the solution for the near term, but the need to manage depleted radioactive fuel for centuries makes nuclear energy as environmentally problematic as the fossil fuels it replaces. At best, we should only consider it a bridge to more sustainable forms of power. Fortunately for the human race, renewable energy is finally becoming competitive. To make it truly transformative, though, we also need to reinvent a technology most of us take for granted: the battery. Saving power for later Utility companies are responsible for delivering power at all hours, under all conditions. That’s the central challenge in building a grid powered by renewable energy: you can’t generate wind power on a still day or solar power on a cloudy one, and you can’t tweak the weather to boost power production during times of peak demand. To ensure we continue to have abundant, consistent electricity in a post-fossil fuel age, we need grid-scale ways to store hydroelectric, solar, and wind power for later use and move it to where it’s needed. The most common rechargeable batteries in use today are lithium ion (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries can pack a lot of energy into a small, lightweight package that charges quickly, retains a charge for a long time, and can be recharged many times before wearing out. However, they aren’t currently able to scale to the size a power grid demands. That’s one reason why battery research and development attracted $480 million in venture capital in the first six months of 2017 alone. The next generation of energy storage seems to be on the verge of breaking out. Keep an eye on these technologies currently in development: Batteries made of graphene – a one-atom-thick layer of graphite that conducts energy faster and more efficiently than any other material on earth – charge and discharge dozens of times faster than standard lithium-ion batteries, can be charged to full in less time, and store an enormous amount of power for their size. One company is already producing graphene batteries for use in electric cars. A battery made from cheap, plentiful sodium needs to be much bigger than a lithium-ion battery to hold the same charge. That makes sodium batteries impractical for portable devices – but ideal for homes, office buildings, or the grid itself. In fact, you’ll probably be able to buy cost-effective sodium batteries for household energy storage within the next few years. A lithium-sulphur (Li-S) battery could store two to three times as much power in the same space as a lithium-ion battery, or the same amount of power in half to one-third the size. So far, though, Li-S batteries don’t last long, so researchers don’t expect a commercial version for five to 10 years. Lithium combined with air could store twice as much power as a lithium-ion battery of the same size (or the same amount of power in a battery half the size). Like Li-S batteries, though, Li-air batteries have a longevity problem researchers say it will likely take 10 years to solve. Solid-state batteries developed by Toyota scientists can completely charge or discharge in just eight minutes and, because they do not contain liquid as other batteries do, should continue working in temperatures from boiling to well below freezing. However, these batteries are still under development, with no clear timeline for commercial availability and applications. Other possibilities at early stages of development include batteries made with a fire-retardant solid polymer, batteries that are 3D printed from copper foam, lightweight, long-lasting miniaturized solid-oxide fuel cells, gold nanowires that can be recharged 200,000 times with no loss of capacity, and a wearable nanofilm that captures and stores energy from friction and body motion. Researchers in the UK have even used nanogenerators to build a phone that charges its own batteries using ambient sound – including the voice of the person talking into the phone. And in a development that could redefine how we think about energy storage, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is working with Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini to build an electric “supercar” that doesn’t even have a battery in the conventional sense – because it can store energy in its body panels made of lightweight carbon nanotubes. Getting charged up about batteries’ potential Businesses and governments alike are finally recognizing the potential of being able to store power at grid scale and investing accordingly. Automotive manufacturers are setting up divisions to leverage their existing investments in electric cars into energy-storage solutions for the residential and commercial market. Airplane manufacturers are experimenting with lightweight battery-driven propulsion systems. Governments worldwide are rolling out subsidies to encourage cost-saving, industry-disrupting battery innovations. In fact, in a test the entire world should be watching, Elon Musk’s Tesla worked with French renewable energy company Neoen to build the world’s biggest Li-ion battery installation in South Australia in autumn 2017. Construction ended November 23, and the battery is now undergoing charging and testing before it’s put to work supplementing the local utility’s power grid by storing enough wind energy to power 30,000 homes. The battery revolution isn’t merely about charging your phone just once a week or driving your electric car 1,000 miles without plugging in. It’s about enabling a society-wide transformation with massive ramifications. Developing better ways to store energy will create new job opportunities, not just at battery manufacturers, but across the economy as we retool and build out an infrastructure that relies on renewable energy sources. Less expensive, more environmentally friendly sources of power will play a vital role in the growth of circular business models that recapture and reuse resources. The power grid will have the decentralized reserves of power it needs to remain resilient even as it increases its reliance on renewable sources. Scientists say we have just a few more years to mitigate man-made climate change before it reaches a tipping point that tumbles us into an extremely unpleasant future – so we need to make the transition to a sustainable post-fossil-fuel world as quickly as possible. By allowing us to use power more efficiently and store it more effectively, the next generation of batteries will do more than just help smooth the inevitable turbulence of that societal shift. The energy storage systems we develop today may actually contain the future of civilization. |

"body": "How Future Batteries Could Save Civilization.\n\nThe future of humanity may well depend on our ability to move away from our dirty and dwindling supply of fossil fuels as fast as possible. To steer ourselves and our planet in the right direction, we have to find another way to feed our civilization’s need for a reliable supply of energy.\n\nNuclear power may well be part of the solution for the near term, but the need to manage depleted radioactive fuel for centuries makes nuclear energy as environmentally problematic as the fossil fuels it replaces. At best, we should only consider it a bridge to more sustainable forms of power.\n\nFortunately for the human race, renewable energy is finally becoming competitive. To make it truly transformative, though, we also need to reinvent a technology most of us take for granted: the battery.\n\n\nSaving power for later\nUtility companies are responsible for delivering power at all hours, under all conditions. That’s the central challenge in building a grid powered by renewable energy: you can’t generate wind power on a still day or solar power on a cloudy one, and you can’t tweak the weather to boost power production during times of peak demand. To ensure we continue to have abundant, consistent electricity in a post-fossil fuel age, we need grid-scale ways to store hydroelectric, solar, and wind power for later use and move it to where it’s needed.\n\nThe most common rechargeable batteries in use today are lithium ion (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries can pack a lot of energy into a small, lightweight package that charges quickly, retains a charge for a long time, and can be recharged many times before wearing out. However, they aren’t currently able to scale to the size a power grid demands. That’s one reason why battery research and development attracted $480 million in venture capital in the first six months of 2017 alone.\n\nThe next generation of energy storage seems to be on the verge of breaking out. Keep an eye on these technologies currently in development:\n\nBatteries made of graphene – a one-atom-thick layer of graphite that conducts energy faster and more efficiently than any other material on earth – charge and discharge dozens of times faster than standard lithium-ion batteries, can be charged to full in less time, and store an enormous amount of power for their size. One company is already producing graphene batteries for use in electric cars.\nA battery made from cheap, plentiful sodium needs to be much bigger than a lithium-ion battery to hold the same charge. That makes sodium batteries impractical for portable devices – but ideal for homes, office buildings, or the grid itself. In fact, you’ll probably be able to buy cost-effective sodium batteries for household energy storage within the next few years.\nA lithium-sulphur (Li-S) battery could store two to three times as much power in the same space as a lithium-ion battery, or the same amount of power in half to one-third the size. So far, though, Li-S batteries don’t last long, so researchers don’t expect a commercial version for five to 10 years.\nLithium combined with air could store twice as much power as a lithium-ion battery of the same size (or the same amount of power in a battery half the size). Like Li-S batteries, though, Li-air batteries have a longevity problem researchers say it will likely take 10 years to solve.\nSolid-state batteries developed by Toyota scientists can completely charge or discharge in just eight minutes and, because they do not contain liquid as other batteries do, should continue working in temperatures from boiling to well below freezing. However, these batteries are still under development, with no clear timeline for commercial availability and applications.\nOther possibilities at early stages of development include batteries made with a fire-retardant solid polymer, batteries that are 3D printed from copper foam, lightweight, long-lasting miniaturized solid-oxide fuel cells, gold nanowires that can be recharged 200,000 times with no loss of capacity, and a wearable nanofilm that captures and stores energy from friction and body motion.\n\nResearchers in the UK have even used nanogenerators to build a phone that charges its own batteries using ambient sound – including the voice of the person talking into the phone. And in a development that could redefine how we think about energy storage, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is working with Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini to build an electric “supercar” that doesn’t even have a battery in the conventional sense – because it can store energy in its body panels made of lightweight carbon nanotubes.\n\nGetting charged up about batteries’ potential\nBusinesses and governments alike are finally recognizing the potential of being able to store power at grid scale and investing accordingly. Construction ended November 23, and the battery is now undergoing charging and testing before it’s put to work supplementing the local utility’s power grid by storing enough wind energy to power 30,000 homes.\n\n\nThe battery revolution isn’t merely about charging your phone just once a week or driving your electric car 1,000 miles without plugging in. The power grid will have the decentralized reserves of power it needs to remain resilient even as it increases its reliance on renewable sources.\n\nScientists say we have just a few more years to mitigate man-made climate change before it reaches a tipping point that tumbles us into an extremely unpleasant future – so we need to make the transition to a sustainable post-fossil-fuel world as quickly as possible. By allowing us to use power more efficiently and store it more effectively, the next generation of batteries will do more than just help smooth the inevitable turbulence of that societal shift. The energy storage systems we develop today may actually contain the future of civilization.",

| body | Empowering Your Vehicles With the Internet of Things Regardless of your industry, how you manage vehicles presents a wide range of challenges that even seasoned veterans have a hard time grappling with. This could include a company that owns its own fleet of delivery trucks, or one that uses heavy equipment like excavators, or even mining companies with haul trucks. When you manage vehicles across a global network, you’ve got a seemingly infinite number of rules and regulations (that change on a regular basis) to worry about. You have drivers taking inefficient routes or operating under less-than-safe conditions, but you don’t know where they are. You don’t know the specifics of how. You don’t know why. The Internet of Things offers many opportunities for industry professionals to address all of these challenges and more. As a concept, the IoT involves a series of “smart” devices that are all creating, collecting, and sharing data with one another at all times. This doesn’t just mean smartphones or smartwatches, either. Ericsson predicts that by 2018 there will be more IoT-connected devices in the world than there will be mobile phones. Business Insider predicts that by 2020 global manufacturers will invest an incredible $70 billion on IoT-powered solutions. There’s a reason why manufacturing is expected to be the biggest IoT platform segment, with a total value of $438 million, by 2021. The IoT promises tremendous benefits to companies with moving assets – particularly for those in the mill products and mining industries. Mill products includes paper, metals, packaging, building products, cement, concrete, furniture, plastic products, and textiles. Going beneath the data Building your connected fleet or assets on the IoT is about more than seeing where your vehicles are at any given time. It’s about going deep into the data you’re collecting to uncover an essential narrative about your business as a whole. This is particularly valuable in the mill products and mining industries. Knowledge of where products are in the transportation process can keep the supply chain running efficiently and customers satisfied by delivering on time – even with changes in schedules or project delays. In the steel and paper industry, steel coils or paper rolls are easily damaged and require delicate handling, expert packaging, and proper storage. Using IoT technologies to track real-time location, process, and product characteristics throughout production and delivery offers tremendous value. This intelligence can support end-to-end root-cause analysis, including how often a coil was lifted, the acceleration and force applied to move it and put it down, and the temperature and humidity where it was stored and transported. For most companies in these industries, fleet and transportation is a huge cost driver and often represents a large percentage of the cost of goods sold. Deeper analysis into transportation patterns can identify factors that improve speed or reduce maintenance (by predicting tire wear, for example) and generate direct, bottom-line benefits. Data on pedal position, speed, and velocity can give valuable insight on drivers’ safety and the types of decisions they’re making on the road. Patterns and trends that would have otherwise been undiscovered are now clear, allowing you to dramatically increase the safety of your drivers, reward drivers who are doing good work, and invest in training in those who aren’t. You can even make hiring or firing decisions based on this data, using an objective analysis to determine who is an appropriate fit for your fleet and who isn’t. If drivers and their trucks are tracked in this way, each one can be assigned a score based on factors like safety and ability. You can identify, based on historical data, what conditions are more likely to be associated with increased accident risk; when taken in the context of an individual driver, you can make decisions that reduce accidents altogether. In mining, many companies are already tracking tire pressure, wear, breaking, and other factors related to haul truck tires, which cost upwards of $20,000 each. Companies have reported millions of dollars in annual savings by predicting failure ahead of time, enabling companies to schedule maintenance or replacement and reduce downtime. Even information like the total weight of a particular load or the G forces while in transit can all feed back into your business, maximizing your logistics strategy to allow your team to work “smarter, not harder” in the future. In industries that produce wood or building products, this type of information can be used to identify and reduce fraud. For example, a company hauling logs or other types of building materials can weigh a truck’s contents at pickup and again at delivery to ensure no theft has occurred. Smart boundaries: Geofencing Geofencing is another way to use data to track and improve your fleet or assets. Geofencing uses mobile devices to set up virtual boundaries, or “fences,” around designated areas. Vehicles collect and transmit location information over wireless networks to the company, enabling it to live-track fleet vehicles when they enter a physical job site or other designated or secure area. When a fleet truck or mobile worker crosses one of these geofences, the time and location is logged and sent as an email or pop-up alert to specified recipients. Geofencing can also be used to interact with a driver. For example, an alert can tell the driver exactly where to dock and when to enter, once the truck is close to its destination. Creating the 21st century fleet with the IoT In many ways, the advantage that the IoT brings to the mill products and mining industries is more than just creating and storing data. It’s about having access to that data in real time. It’s about empowering decision makers with accurate, actionable, and instant information they need to take the perfect step at the perfect time. Mill products companies can collect, map, store, and analyze fleet and vehicle data at a moment’s notice. This can be used for everything from performing a driver safety analysis to reducing accidents. It can help organizations keep track of ever-changing rules and regulations, minimizing compliance issues. However, the most important benefit of all is connecting your entire fleet together in a rich and meaningful way. At that point, a fleet becomes less the sum of a series of disparate parts spread out across the globe and more a living, breathing whole. |

| body | How The IoT Is Changing Our Daily Lives As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the Internet of Things (IoT) creates an extensive network of devices that regularly exchange data. While this interconnection is happening in businesses and throughout organizations on a global level, it’s also happening in individual homes. Here are six smart home tech devices that work together to help a house run more efficiently and should be in everyone’s home. 1. Smart thermostat Keeping a house consistently at the right temperature not only provides a more comfortable home, but can ultimately save a lot on heating bills. Some smart thermostats can easily be controlled using a smartphone or a computer. These devices detect the temperature in each room and allow the heating or air conditioning to run until the desired temperature is achieved. They also let you program a schedule of temperatures for different days of the week and different hours throughout the day. 2. Controllable slow cooker Being able to manage meals when you’re away from home is a great way to save time and stay organized. Through smartphone apps, you can adjust the setting on the slow cooker from just about anywhere. You can also adjust temperature and cooking time and check the status of your meal. These high-tech slow cookers are not only convenient, they’re also large capacity and dishwasher safe. 3. Sleep tracker Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to overall health and productivity, and trackers help you take control of your sleep. Trackers are available as headbands and masks, and smart mattress covers come with a variety of integrated sensors. Rings and wristbands can monitor the duration and stages of sleep. Some more advanced devices even track brain waves in real time. 4. Video monitor Whether it’s watching the kids or pets or for general home security, a video monitor is one smart device every home should have. Indoor monitors include zoom functions, night vision, and two-way audio so you can talk to whomever is in the room. Outdoor models are weatherproof and can be monitored by mobile apps or the web. I especially like the video doorbells that let you see and talk to anyone who rings your doorbell, even if you are miles away. 5. Smart body analyzer Smart body analyzers monitor several aspects of your health. For example, small multipurpose devices record blood pressure, EKG, temperature, and oxygen levels from your finger or forehead. More elaborate analyzers delve deep into the body and measure fitness levels through muscles. When placed on areas of your body, these devices use electrical myography to determine the strength of various muscles. The smart scale may be the ultimate IoT device. These scales can determine fat mass, lean mass, and BMI, and they’re wi-fi-connected so they can send detailed information to an online account (and even put your weight on Twitter to keep you motivated!). 6. Smart home hub The home hub is where all your IoT devices come together. It acts as a mission control center, enabling all plugs and sensors to together seamlessly. Homeowners should invest in a smart hub that effectively meets their individual needs. Home hubs with a variety of features, including voice activation, can be purchased for less than $200. Smart home tech devices are the future of our daily lives. The IoT brings them all together into one workable system that provides cutting-edge technology at your fingertips. |

| body | How The IoT Is Changing Our Daily Lives As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the Internet of Things (IoT) creates an extensive network of devices that regularly exchange data.
