      "body": "Do you remember when you were a kid, and wrote your address on the back of an envelope, when envelopes were tactile, gluey and crisp things you could stuff with glitter, love letters, dollar bills and greeting cards? \n\nName, address, Earth, The Solar System, The Universe.\n\nIf you got all science geek about this, it went further.  Provided you could afford to send said envelope to some one you loved on the other side of the known universe, and accept it might take many months and years to arrive (because only a physical envelope would do, and not an email, which would only take 21 minutes to reach Mars) you would have to get a little more specific for your space postman. Like a postman navigating a town whose bridge collapsed yesterday and whose major roads disappeared in sinkholes, and is trying to do this in a snow storm, cosmic posties must consider dark energy (which powers the accelerating expansion of the universe), gravity and space-time weirdness that makes relativity quite difficult. That cosmic address would need to be pretty damn precise, and the navigational controls on the Galactical Space Postal Company ship would want to be well oiled. \n\nOne must also consider something about the culture that exists on the planet to which you are addressing your missive. Perhaps the objects we use to define our physical location and thus our identity - state, town, street, house number - are not the same objects used to locate our friend Uloguogiolio (not his real name) who we know is located on the planet we call Ulo (not a real planet). Perhaps their labels are less labels, but more a understanding of all that is. \n\nThe sun is no less the sun for being refracted off the glacial pools of Ulo or warming the wet flesh of an Ulogian or setting to the eastern mountains lit by it's three moons. The sun is all three things, and not one of them. Likewise, the foothills of the mountains where Uloguogiolo lives might not be labelled 'G'lio Foothills', as we might have naturally named it, being Earthians. Why label a 'foothill' as such, our friend might argue, if the dirt that forms it is the same as the dirt under your fingernails, the mud at the base of the river below,  the dirt that covers your great grandparents bones, or the dust that sparkles in the Uloian moonlight? Perhaps too our friend Uloguogiolo would feel deeply offended if we asked him: please, could you give me your address, so I can label the envelope correctly? What is a label, he might argue, but something you Earthians use to divide one from the other? It is addressed to my name, but there are other objects to whom I connect myself in time and space. The earth-dirt under my fingernails. The worms in the vegetable garden. The precise time the sun sets in the west and melts gold over the grass fields. The memory of my child's foot held in my hand as we banana'd together in sleep. The deep blue sapphire on my engagement ring, coupled by two tiny diamonds, with at least three previous owners that I wonder if they loved as much as I love the man who drives past the postbox every evening and kisses my forehead and asks what's cooking. The blue flint he gave me that sits on the bookshelf, shot through with flecks of white: stars, he said, galaxies, infinity. \n\n'Where do you fit?' you ask, in your need to label. 'Where are you, relative to me? How might I categorise you, so that I might know myself better?' \n\nI think of how, when we hold our hands up to the light, the webs of our fingers are pink. I think of the heart that pumps blood in both our chests. I think of the way you love the winter sunlight on your face, just as I do when I am exhausted and overstretched. I think of how you love your grandchildren and how I love my son. I think of the shadows that scare us both. \n\nWho am I? I am you. \n\nI smile, and think of the planet Ulo, and the far away being that I cannot write to, but I love unconditionally. \n\nI think of the universe. Of all there is. It's a feeling of ennui, disengagement and disillusionment compounded by reaching an age I'm struggling to come to terms with, the pandemic, climate change, and any number of things that I'm finding difficult to detach from. But this week, I felt a smidgeon of hope - like a dust mote catching the late afternoon sunlight, a dewdrop on a spider's web or the thin veil of a dragonfly's wing, it was tiny, and fragile. Still, it was hope. I felt it in the garden, listening to birds, and music. It felt like my heart was opening again, after a long winter. I cupped it in my dirty hands and kissed it. Grow, dear hope, I breathed. Send your roots down into the earth. Unfurl your tender shoots and soft leaves. Grow. \n\nAs this tender feeling spread throughout my bones and pressed up against my rib cage, I felt energized, revitalised. It's late winter here in Australia and Spring starts in exactly a month's time, on the 1st of September. Our seasons don't really make sense according to a northern calender. I appreciate the first people's seasonal calender: here in this part of the country, there are six seasons, not four. I appreciate the attention to observing the birds, fish, flowers - it is a calender that pays close attention. We have a minimum of 6, and a maxium of 13, on average, but on a day like today when the sun is out you'd be forgiven for stripping to a tshirt whilst working in the garden. I thumb garlic into the ground to utilise it's strappy leaves in cooking - it's too late for planting more on top of the crop I planted at Easter, which are doing well. Fennel and kohl rabi are forming, but the broccoli isn't heading too well - never mind, I eat the leaves and shoots well enough. Chard, parsley, kale, spring onions, swede and beetroot form part of our garden diet at this time of the year. \n\nIn the greenhouse, the miracle of capsicums and chillis continues - I've never successfully overwintered them or eggplant, but under the cover of plastic, they keep ripening. I'm thrilled. We eat omelettes because the chickens have begun laying, though they're plopping eggs mid yard as if they haven't quite figured out how to nest in the appropriate boxes. Garnished with harissa, olives and bright calendula flowers, it becomes a gourmet feast. \n\nYesterday we took a drive down the coast and up through Apollo Bay to a herb nursery to see what they had - I was delighted to find elecapane and chamomile, which I need to find a space for, and a calendula plant that had originally, along with the chamomile, come as seed from a trip she made to Germany. I liked these origin stories alot, especially since my German grandmother's two herbal allies were always chamomile and calendula. With herbs on my mind, I planted white sage, echinacea, chamomile, mullein and thyme seeds. I'm new to this polytunnel lark, but I thought I'd experiment with starting some summer seeds early. Consensus in our local online Facebook group was that it was a good idea to start them over the next few weeks, so in went a few cold tolerant tomatoes, and some chilli seeds. Despite @minsmallholding's note with the seeds she posted me (purple maui chilli) about getting it in her eyes, I still managed to plant them and then rub my own eyes, resulting in an an hour or so blinking and stinging.       "body": "In the first week after I found out that my father might die, there were two things that made me cry: green beans, and The Rolling Stones. \n\nMy sister loathed green beans. She didn't like their squeak against her teeth. Dad would eat them with gusto and drama. 'They fed us these in the army!' he'd exclaim, whilst we rolled our eyes and my sister gagged. 'Love 'em!'. I had a similar enthusiasm for food, although Dad failed to recognise his own tendency to ebullience and hyberbole in others. 'You can't **love** food,' he'd tease. 'You can't **marry** it. But my father had *given* me the same enthusiastic, unrestrained joy in all kinds of things. Music, for example. \n\n'How will we ever be able to listen to them again?' my sister laughed, crying into her soy latte as I handed her a tissue. The Stones was our childhood, after all. Saturday mornings were loud music on vinyl. Parties where we would curl up under coats in the guestroom whilst the adults listened to Exile on Main Street. The naughtiness of the sleeve of Sticky Fingers. Jagger's lankiness and big lips. 'Weellllll.... did yaaaa hear about the Midnight Rambler?' or the quieter 'Love in Vain: 'I followed her... to the staaaaaaaaaaschhhiiooon'. To this day it only takes a note or two and I've nailed the song and the album. It's a kind of child abuse, or brainwashing, or beautiful musical indoctrination that you hold close to your heart forever. These say Alzheimer's patients are brought to lucidity through music. If lucidity had been the issue, the Stones would have been the playlist, followed by Dylan, Cash, Steve Earle, Greg Browne, a thousand other artists that had him calling me up and saying: 'Listen to this!' in the thirty five years since I left home. I felt the nauseating realisation that no one would call me with a song anymore, once he was gone. \n\nGreen beans and the 'Stones. He's an Australian blues singer-songwriter, although this short description does his vaudeville, carnivalesque theatrics a little disservice. One online publication listed his repertoire as 'A 1920s pre-war blues sound...New Orleans jazz, jug band music, hokum, country, and calypso...elements of jump jive, early rock’n’roll, and gospel' Want to listen more?
