| body | September is National Deaf Awareness Month. How will you contribute? | body | The Internet has your attention, 110% of it. Everything else seems secondary and you know it. Even though you may resent the part of yourself that believes it, you comply. The Internet, the global communication protocol. A network connecting and providing infinite sources of information, ways to learn, apply, publish and communicate for better or for worse. The Internet will challenge you. It will force you to participate and redefine how you assert and present yourself. The Internet remembers, always. The Internet has hacked your attention and your ability to control it. You look out into the distance and confirm this to yourself with a deep contemplative sigh while uttering, “more so than I can ever recall”. The previous phenomenon’s that you have taken notice of, or the things that have captivated and compelled you now become weak comparisons in contrast. Levels of personal interest and or importance trigger physiological states and deployments of emotions as you pilot the highs and lows of dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. Your patience will be tested. At what rate and capacity will you accept and tolerate its myriad of immediacies and delays? How will your psychology, consciousness and levels of awareness assimilate without suffering the range of emotions deployed simultaneously? Your definition of privacy has been forever altered and hacked. Are you free from being observed from multitudes of angles and or surprisingly disturbed by your global roster of teammates? Rapid metrics of contrast and the awareness of infinite creativity, variation, juxtaposition and associations of interconnectedness dance seamlessly on your soul. The Internet, is in its infancy and the greatest metaphor you have ever known. Attention → Patience → Privacy → Contrast → The Inner-Net to the Internet |

| body | I believe that all change begins with one's self. So, I ask myself, self, Why? What is your story? I want the real story. The one that you have kept locked up and to yourself. The one or series of hurts that seems to nudge at you everyday, yet your adamant anti-change ego has built a manipulating system over the years to counter act it. Not only that, the avoidance of telling that story has created an identity that we cling to as a result. (Re-read that last sentence please). Oh yes, we are that powerful. Of course you and only you are responsible and accountable for all of that. And, that in and of itself is also the work of the ever so crafty ego as well. Attention plays a big role in all of this. When I say attention it works both ways. The power to avoid placing your attention on something is just as powerful as the unconscious attention sucking power of your mobile device. Contrast, dichotomy and impatience. I will come back to these words soon, just put them in your pocket for now. We cant change what we are not aware of. Maybe these parts of our past are so outdated that our focus has shifted from the actual hurtful or disappointing issues to simply perpetuating a cycle of avoiding change itself, any change for that matter. Underneath it all though, there is a higher knowingness that we need to move forward. A story can activate the process, so open up. This quote by Joseph Campbell has followed me around for a big portion of my 20's, 30's and continues into my mid 40's - "We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." The best part os this, the quote is always transferred to me through another person's usage of it. This ranges from friends, students, and seemingly random people. Meaning, they used it in a paper that they wrote and I rediscover it there. Or someone shared a presentation given many years ago online and there the quote pops up again. Im never seeking to find it, but it always finds me, reminds me and surprises me each and every time. Its magical. Maybe you are at a point of life where the daily routine and patterns have cumulatively shown you exactly what you don't want. Maybe the life that you planned 20 years ago was someone else's idea all along, you simply assimilated it thinking it was the right thing at the time. Or maybe you avoided yourself and the fear of being judged by your friends, family, classmates and colleagues? Either way, you have all the contrast that you need to know that its time to take action. Rewrite the story. I don't mean doing anything rash to rebel against the identity you formed with your ego by packing your bags and abandoning your current life. That would be a serious disservice and further manipulation of yourself. Start with a still moment. A quite place with a pen and a piece of paper, or your lap top, mobile device or another form of letting words flow out of you. There is a story that we have already lived. That story inside of us has brought us to the place we are now. It is our personal contrast and it is time to create and live its opposite in the most thriving ways. Will you? Past fears, insecurities and anxiety within the self trigger our erroneous assessments and inadequacies that revert to external comparisons with the lives of others. I reiterate, start small. Find a still moment. A quite place with a pen and a piece of paper, your lap top, mobile device or another form of recording your words. Allow them to flow out of you. Can you? Self-reflection takes time. It requires a commitment to stop judging yourself first and foremost. You will meet the first several attempts with resistance. Please keep in mind the letters "RE" start off the word "resistance". This is an opportunity to push through those moments and practice. Re-peat and practice. I compare this to learning how to meditate, the first several attempts to quite the mind and body are met with great difficulty because it has become a physical and emotional state that we are not consciously familiar with. We live so much in our heads, and what I mean by this is in our own thoughts. (We have over 50,000 thoughts per day and most of them are repetitive) We repeat those thoughts and attach emotions to them. Often those emotions are uncomfortable. Our bodies learn how to counter this discomfort by seeking a temporary solution. We know this all too well from the quick rush of dopamine that we feel when something external causes us to be happy. Yet this is only a quick fix that only induces the perpetuating of the same pattern, an external source to bring on those feelings. Ask, Why. Why do we do the things that we do, and also not do? Why haven't we asked ourselves why? How many things are we unconsciously doing and participating in with out knowing why we are doing them? The word "why" demands that we take responsibility for ourselves, our actions and our growth. Dig into your life story thus far, the deep inner-story. The one that you have lived, and the one that you have chosen to tell. We may tell ourselves that story one way on the inside, but share it outwardly with the world in a very different way. Hmmm, sound familiar? Why do we continue to perpetuate this? Transparency brings healing. Our personal stories hold a struggle that we have had to over come. Write that story and share it. That story is the portal to another persons's inspiration to start their path of growth and change. Contrast is a mirror. There have never been so many creative outlets for sharing than ever before. The Internet and technology has made this so easy and efficient. (Need help, reach out to me and I will get you started!) I believe that the intervention for personal growth and change happens when we are open to examine, share and rewrite our story. To reflect on it, relive it, release it and retell how it has brought us to this point of transition. We humans put so much expectation on the outcome of things that we often miss the entire process. Perhaps you too will find JC's quote seeking you now - "We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." |

(Need help, reach out to me and I will get you started!)\n\nI believe that the intervention for personal growth and change happens when we are open to examine, share and rewrite our story. To reflect on it, relive it, release it and retell how it has brought us to this point of transition. We humans put so much expectation on the outcome of things that we often miss the entire process. \n\nPerhaps you too will find JC's quote seeking you now - \"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.\"",

| body | Click this link to activate the gallery --> https://www.ryanseslow.com/communicating-my-deafness-part-1/ Communicating My Deaf & Hard of Hearing Self – Part 1 Welcome to my first series of art works produced examining and identifying as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing person. It has been a long road. This body of work is the first in a multi-part series with supporting written explanations broken down into individual blog posts. I encourage the viewer to view the gallery of digital and animated art works above and then delve into the individual blog posts listed below for deeper context. All of the pieces have been created in 2018 and consist of Digital Illustrations, Collage, Animated GIFs & Video Art. Fragments of manipulated grainy images and re-compositions display the variation and extension of each piece. The works are visual representations for the regular distortions, missing of sounds, words and overall communication I experience daily. They represent how I feel, react, overcompensate and adjust to communication in various interactions. They are intended to be both subtle, confusing and difficult to follow. "Communicating My Deaf & Hard of Hearing Self - Part 1" is the first installation in the series. It is first published here on my website and shared via my social media platforms. I am seeking to extend this body of work into a lecture series for both the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and the Hearing world. | body | My mural for the Welling Court Mural Project 2018 has been completed! Time goes by too fast! Here is my process in a series of steps over the 2.5 days of super fun painting. Step 1 - Yup, everyone has to buff the previous year's mural. In a lot of cases, it is usually your own. I love working in the same spot and how the other amazing artists on the same strip compliment each others work so well. This year, I hit the old mural with a roll out of primer and the intention of adding to the previous background clouds up top. I had to also recompose the barbed wire too...funny and not funny! Step 2 - I like to first lay down a loose sketch of lines with a solid color. My murals are usually intuitive and unplanned in terms of subject matter. I may make a sketch on paper weeks before just to please my "what if ego-self" but I never follow it. I love making the process immediate, and a puzzle of figuring it out as I go. Step 3 - The complete the sketch. I need to do this for scale, composition and an overall sense of how the fragmented pieces come together. In this case, this mural is a celebration of NYC B-Boy and B-Girl characters, hip hop and graffiti culture. I have been inspired by this art movement since 1982 and counting! I pay homage to what has inspired me with the intention of inspiring you back. Step 4 - Start adding color to the highest point of the composition. In this case, I needed to resolve the background, clean it up and re-connect it. I filled it with more colorful clouds and bubble like forms that are common in graffiti pieces. Step 5 - Continue to work down from the top and lay the color into place. Im working with primary and secondary colors again this year. It continues to inspire me and help the piece really pop once the final outline is applied. This is the most labor intensive aspect of the mural. Step 6 - Chat with Charlie Ahearn and his class! As you know, Charlie is the creator of the hip hop American class graffiti film: Wild Style. Charlie brought his summer class from the School of Visual Arts to visit Welling Court while a lot of the artists were at work. This gives the students a first hand insight into the process while asking questions and snapping some picts. I am always super grateful to share my process and meet new people. This was a great group of warm and insightful artists! Step 7 - Complete the color fills and mull over whether to leave it as is or add the traditional outline.. I added my tag/name as a bubble throwie and kept the interior of the letters white for contrast. What do you think of the piece with out the outline? Step 8 - The artist and the mural. Hopefully the image gives a sense of scale in height and width. I laid down a black outline with both the spray can and a brush to fine tune some the detail. I used an external enamel paint for a longer lasting effect. The murals are up and active for one full year! Get directions to Welling Court NYC - https://wellingcourtmuralproject.com/ |

| body | Reminder, we can always pause. Pause and become aware of this very passing second. I mean REALLY AWARE, so stop and be still. You are alive. Contemplate that. What does being alive mean to you? Have you ever defined it beyond someone else’s interpretation? If not, its time to do this. No, it can not be done in the next 3 seconds.. It will take some reflection.. You are a thinking, breathing, feeling, sensory being processing this exact passing moment. Exactly as you read this from the specific location that you are in, with the age that your body is, in the time zone of the highest level of what you understand consciousness to be. You can always expand this awareness. Its a metaphor, because all the while, you are simultaneously existing on a seemingly gigantic rock spinning through the “space” that the best of the best of the best world’s scientists keep discovering only keeps expanding into more, well, space. In the grand scheme of things, our gigantic rock may not be so gigantic when we think from this perspective. Its actually the size we think it is relative to our awareness of it. How do you develop the ability to audit this awareness and ask yourself what potentials lay in this metaphor? It will require creativity and imagination. So go ahead and ASK. Ask yourself: “What is the creative potential of my awareness of this moment, and how may I intervene? What would like to express about this moment and the awareness of it? How will you do it? Chances are, you are holding your “device” as you read this. You know what device I am referring to. Perhaps its an iPhone, android or a tablet? It doesn’t matter and either way, it first started simply as an idea. An expression of a collective need to expand, grow, learn and express. Much like the infinite expanding space that we mentioned above your device is an intermediary tool to express the potentials of creative space. You device is a remote control for the planet! We interacted with simple geometric shapes every single day, we take all of them for granted and rarely think of the doorways we are passing through as rectangles. Or the TV that we watch as the rectangle. As we walk up steps we rarely think of them as the horizontal rectangles that stack upwards or downwards.. You get the idea.. What is the creative potential of YOU and the rectangle that you are holding? What are you passionate about? What is that you always wanted to express and share with the world? What is it that holds you back? If you never “Start” then you will never have a result to work from. The only metric you have are the ones that you fear your expression wont compliment. So, start. Express. Share it into that rectangle in your hand and make it a practice. Create a space on the web that is yours and personalize it. Broadcast yourself and grow by connecting with others. Taking risks that benefit your growth and personal development while impacting and including your fellow human beings has serious mental, spiritual & emotional value. This is your story, and storytelling is the communication pilot of the Electric Landscapes we navigate. Remote control in hand. |

| body | The noticing... I know that you know exactly what "noticing" I am speaking of. The most inner stillness, at the most silent moment regardless of any external chaos. This awareness comes from a version of you that is always trying to get your attention long enough to point the way. Does it though? Although on very deep level there has always been a lingering knowingness present. It alludes most of the daily routines, habits and subtleties that are driven by the ego. Change is calling. The unknown awaits, and you are much more than you thought you were. This too, is a lingering knowingness. Even unrealized perceptions of who we once thought we were supposed to become can become an outdated skewed reality that we greatly need to shed. We all know it. Sometimes, an actual ritual or intervention needs to take place to activate the change cycle. It may be via a dream, or a meditation, or by hearing a story. Even a week in bed with the flu can be the catalyst.. Change is a fierce motivator and also a fierce resistor. In-between this dichotomy, which is an energy in and of itself, picture yourself in a room made out of light with no windows but only two doorways facing each other. You stand directly in the space between both doors. One door reads Change and the other reads Resist. As you stand there in the center you notice that an umbilical cord is attached to yourself and both doors. The umbilical cord is sensory and reacts and responds to each thought and memory that you revisit about your past as it sends a charge to both chords that light up and vibrate the doors. That charge opens both doors, but just a little bit. You feel torn because you are both physical and spiritual. The physical body has a complex cellular memory that also has a memory and database of its own. It is guarded by a thick wall of past hurts and post traumatic stress situations, events and circumstances. It is this skin of remembrance that slows the processes of change. To a great degree many of these past memories are unconsciously lingering. How will you open the door to change, growth and your becoming self of higher awareness? I believe the first step is to allow yourself to say and feel, I am a ready for change. I am the new experiences and I welcome them to come into my life... |

| body | Mobile, Smart & Cell Phone Digital Art Making Its no secret that there is a ton of potential in mobile/smart phone art making. In fact, you might be a little late to the party! (Im kidding, its never to late to join in) There are literally tons and tons of apps that are both practical, fun and objective, however, I think that the true potential in the medium is hidden in the cross testing of multiple apps combined. After that, the beauty and further discovery is in synthesizing them together for your creative output. I know, that sounds ambitious, especially if you are new to the mobile/smart phone art making game. The output may be a series of still frames that work together as a sequence or a series dedicated to style that you create. The output may be a series of subtle animations in the form of GIFs or micro videos (Instagram will loop them for you today). Either way, the use of visuals are more present than ever in almost all of the media that we consume. This stretches from all forms of digital and static advertising, news feeds upon news feeds and interactive media that is user based and customizable. This includes academic publications and pedagogy. Yes, thats right, if you think that academia wont be effected by the how the media and main stream advertising plays a roll in our lives, watch what happens over the next 2-3 years. This week is about experimentation and redefining how you perceive your device, lets get acquainted with some of the apps by visiting the links below. Some apps as we know offer a free version for the sake of testing the app. There is quite a bit that can be done today with options to both take screen-shots of still images and also capture screen-recording for creating short animations. I have a few favorites for sure and have tested the apps listed below. Make purchases only at your discretion. Lets dig in. Where will you post your experimentation? Instagram? Twitter? Facebook? Reddit? Flickr? Tumblr, Vero? Your personal website? **You may want to free up some space on your device before you begin. Applications take up space, and so does the work that you will create. | body | It was one of those “summer days” in February here in NYC yesterday when an impulse hit me. I wanted to makes and move lines. I wanted to bring a few characters to life in my sketchbook. I wanted feel the feeling of allowing the creative impulse to flow right through me. Not a judgement, not a care what anyone else thinks, just allow, flow, feel and execute the impulse. In that minute of impulse, just a few seemingly altered moments, I acknowledge the awareness and take action. The reminder hits me like a bolt of lightning. There is always time to express your creativity. Always. Even if its a 30 second snippet of when you become the hyper-awareness moment itself. Don’t not take that impulse you feel to bust out a drawing or a poem, a dance move, or the spoken word because your afraid or too judgmental of what the outcome may be. Every time you judge and block those impulses you train yourself to be more insecure. (Re-read that last line) Creativity loves the movement. Don’t judge it, let it out and share it. It takes the same amount of time to make the decision not to do something, and even more time gets wasted pondering if you should or should not.. This was my result, 120 seconds. By the way, there is not a replica of this exact drawing anywhere in the world. Of course, stylistically, we may have seen things like it, sure, but there is NOT a replica with the exactness that makes this one unique. In fact, I couldn’t re-draw it exactly the same way myself no matter how hard I tried. Think about that amount of power for a second. We always have the ability to bring something NEW into this world. When one begins to practice this with awareness while in process…well, you wont be able to stop. (insert your metaphor here) |
