      "body": "8 Mistakes I See Beginners Make on Steemit\n\nAs someone who has been scrolling through the new feed for the majority of the time on Steemit (as a part of my curating process) I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of it.\n\nSome users are able to adapt and quickly find their audience. Others have hard time learning the ways Steemit works. So they get discouraged and decide to leave or they try to get recognized by acting inauthentic.\n\nThere is a path that will always lead to your success on the platform. And there are mistakes that will drive you further from it. Here are some common ones I've noticed so far.\n\nAsking for others to check their posts or follow them\nWe'll start with the most obvious one. You will go a lot further by actually reading posts and genuinely interacting with other people and following them. Most of the time they'll make sure to check out your blog.\n\nVoting exclusively on top trending posts\nThis brings you less influence and smaller curation rewards. It's fine to check out those posts, they are probably there for a reason. But instead of focusing exclusively on them, go through the feed and look for quality posts from new or maybe not so popular authors. Connect with them and you'll grow together.\n\nSeeing only the earning and not the investment opportunity of the platform\nHearing the concept of Steemit, everyone's excited about possibility to earn money by simply blogging. And that's great. But for everyone who didn't come here from the field of cryptocurrency, it takes some time before they realize that Steemit is one of the best shortcuts to crypto world.\n\nYou don't need a powerful mining rig or a big financial investment to get hold of those coins. Because let's face it, blockchain is the most exciting and revolutionary thing that happened since the internet itself. And we are all pioneers of this future world economy.\n\nNot engaging enough with others\nI've already mentioned it, but it can't be stressed enough. This is the number one thing you need to do. More important than posting and promoting. You want to create a community around yourself by voting and leaving meaningful, honest comments to posts you like or have something to say about.\n\nAnd, of course following the like-minded people.\n\nNot utilizing steemit.chat\nIt is a great tool to help you continue your conversations, promote posts, ask for help on any topic or report plagiarism and abuse.\n\nNot being authentic\nThis is an amazing opportunity to find yourself, to explore different topics and approaches and see what you enjoy the most. No one is gonna be better you than you. So don't try to copy popular authors. Build your own brand instead.\n\nNot enough effort on title, thumbnail and first paragraph\nWith thousands of posts submitted every day it's so easy for one to slip by unnoticed. It needs to make a strong first impression when people scroll through the feed.\n\nAnd the way to do it is by taking extra time to work on your title, first image that is used as a thumbnail, and first paragraph. That's all someone sees when looking for interesting posts. With so much content out here, no one (except the most diligent curators) has the time to read through all of it. So make sure to grab their attention.\n\nLack of patience\nIt takes time to start earning significant rewards. Usually. It takes time to build your reputation. This gives popular review sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp a virtual monopoly on where people spend their money.\nTravel is a big business, and few of the organizations involved are willing to take chances when it comes to profit. Preferential treatment, censoring user submissions, and paid-for reviews are not uncommon practices. This provides visitors with a list of businesses that bring the travel site more profits, not a collection of the best restaurants or most interesting destinations.\n\nCentralization, Trust, and Control\n\nCentralization has eroded the reliability of the travel information industry. When a single entity controls what opinions are displayed and which businesses visitors see, it clearly doesn't exist for the benefit of travelers.\nJust take a look at TripAdvisor, one of the world's largest travel review destinations. The site has built its brand on trust and honesty, yet it operates with almost zero transparency. Businesses that pay extra get preferential treatment in site rankings and search results, and hotels are strong-armed into upgrading paid packages or face reduced visibility.\n\nThese practices do not benefit users, they only increase a single company's profits. They're toxic for small businesses and they hurt travelers in the long run.\n\nReliability of published reviews is another source of frustration. If a traveler had a bad experience at a destination, they should be allowed to share their thoughts. This is precisely why I decided to write this post at this moment, because I realize that you might be feeling very disheartened, very disappointed with the current market valuation. If you are feeling panic, if you are feeling stressed, I hope this open letter gives you a reason to remain calm and keep your hopes up.\n\n\nimg src\nI've lived most of my life wearing many hats, as an artist I've had to fight to achieve what I've built, but as an Entrepreneur my ability to remain calm, to practice patience, to find my emotional balance has been tested to absolute extremes. This has been the case almost from the start of my professional life, and it continues to be so even today, many decades later.\n\nSpending half of my time traveling, living in Brazil as well as USA, I've had the privilege of having a somewhat objective view on the way markets behave. The country where I was born, Brazil, is extremely hostile to those with an Entrepreneur's heart. Without going into specific details, just attempt to imagine an economy were being late on a credit card payment, or paying the minimums due to financial hardships, results in 400% annual interest.\n\nYou might be asking yourself. Why is this relevant to the conversation? Well, to put this into simple words: Operating in an economy like Brazil has taught me to really learn to control my emotions, to keep a level head even when the situations looks extremely difficult, in order to make the best decisions possible.\n\nLooking at the cryptocurrency markets today I was reminded of these particular times in my life and I thought it would be a good time to invite others to reflect upon this realities of the markets. This cycle is actually very normal, and not only within cryptocurrencies, but you could make the case that it's normal in life in general.\n\nI realize many people who participate of this platform are having a really hard time at the moment, not knowing what's going to happen to all the time and money they have invested on Steem. I can see as well that many are selling their tokens in panic. It's obvious when I see the order books on exchanges like binance. But I'm here to tell you that today, right now, is not the time to be selling. It's actually the absolute worse time to be selling your holdings.\n\nAs an Entrepreneur I've lived through many financial winters, but overcoming those hard times was not a thing of coincidence or luck. I remember vividly those moments when my emotional fortitude was tested, when I believed sometimes for just seconds there was not way I was going to come out the victor on the other side. I would fight those negative thoughts not allowing my mind to ponder those possibilities bringing me anxiety and pain.\n\nIt was just a few weeks ago that I shared on this blog one of my favorite movies, The Pursuit of Happiness. My personal story may not be precisely like that, but in many ways I relate a lot to the character of the story. I also had to struggle to grow, to learn. I also started from the ground up.\n\nWhen I was younger I did not have the advantage of having a mentor. Someone that could give me advice at times when I truly needed it. This is why I'm so insistent on the idea of keeping an open mind, on being receptive when people that have walked the path before share with us their experiences as I'm doing with you today.\n\nI remember hearing a long time ago someone say that to make money, to create wealth, you need to have money. I know today that this is very inaccurate. At this point there are thousands of examples of people that inherit fortunes, or win the lotto, only to lose it all in a very short time.\n\nTo accumulate wealth, to grow, you need a plan, and you need the right attitude. And that is the core message I want to leave with you today. Hold your chin up high, don't give up, don't lose hope, look at these times like the opportunity to practice strength, to practice patience and nothing else.\n\nAs I've said already a couple of times this week, right now is not the time to be dumping our holdings into an exchange filled with fear. It's the time to get creative, to see if we can acquire some more, or keep the ones we have, while we patiently wait for the market to turn around, because we know it will. It always does. I believe in this so much I've made an effort to buy more Steem this whole week too.\n\nI'm going to leave this post there, with a simple yet powerful promise. If we stay positive, if we learn to control that fear, that panic and work on our personal development, before you know it summer will have arrived. I haven't founded any successful bitcoin companies, I don't have thousands of Youtube followers, nor do I have a widely-read newsletter. I'm just your average Jo...rdan who stumbled upon Steemit and was intrigued by the concept.\n\n\n\nA couple of days after signing up, I went over to Amazon looking for a book about the site. I bought Steemit 101, written by Tom Janowicz @donkeypong, and devoured it immediately.\n\n\n\nIt was full of great information, but one section in the book stood out; it read:\n\n“I would suggest anyone who’s looking to increase his influence and reputation to join the Slack channel of Steemit (replaced by Steemit Chat after publishing). Then create connections while following the best tip I’ve ever heard on how to get what you want:\n\nIf you can help enough people get what they want, you can get anything you want.\n\nDon’t go on the Slack Channel to get but to give. Give as much of whatever people on the Slack channel needs and you will never be chasing after votes.”\n\nI took that advice to heart, and the hunt was on for ways to do just that. The first opportunity that arose was a post from @ned. He asked for help writing the Steemit FAQ, and I volunteered to put it together. Many hours of work later, the final draft is nearly complete.\n\n\n\nAnother time, I replied to a thread about a potential Steemit improvement. One of Steemit’s largest whales responded to that comment, saying he thought the same thing for a long time. I had previously written a blog post on the topic that got lost in the Steemit abyss. After his comment, it occurred to me that someone of his clout would likely get traction posting it and therefore encourage action by Steemit developers. I told him he could repost it for this reason, no strings attached. Maybe it was because our visions aligned, or maybe it was because of this gesture, but this is how I started swimming with whales. (A.k.a. my first whale follower.)\n\nThroughout the next couple weeks, I continuously offered help in instances where I could hopefully add value: commenting on posts, suggesting improvements, contributing to projects, answering questions, etc.\n\n\n\nEven though I've only had time to write half a dozen blog posts since discovering Steemit a month ago, I managed to garner nearly 150 followers (5 of whom are whales.) All because I came to give, not take.\n\nIf you're a frustrated minnow who has been struggling to gain traction through simply writing blog posts, maybe it's time to consider a new approach? Consider asking what you can do for others and expect nothing in return. I think you'll be overwhelmed with the support you ultimately​ receive.
