If it is already running, you should get an error message that says something like \"Is tor already running?\" That's good if you do. If not, at the command prompt install with: \n\n`sudo apt-get install tor`\n* Then restart your machine, and tor should be running.\n\n# Define Particl as a tor hidden service in the tor configuration file\n\n* To get to your tor configuration file, enter:\n\n`sudo nano /etc/tor/torrc`\n\n* Then in the code enter:\n\n`HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/particl-service/`\n`HiddenServicePort 51738 127.0.0.1:51738`\n\n* Save the file with **Ctrl-X** and **Exit**. \n* Restart your machine, and now tor will be running with an address for Particl as a tor hidden service.\n\n# Find your external IP for the hidden service\n* At a command prompt enter:\n\n`sudo cat /var/lib/tor/particl-service/hostname`\n\n*It should return an .onion address, **[yourexternalip].onion***\n\n# Modify your \"particl.conf\" file\n* In the *.particl* directory there will be a *particl.conf* file. The wallet can run without that but you can include a lot of startup and operating instructions with it. This lead to the [Ring Signature Confidential Transactions for Monero](https://eprint.iacr.org/2015/1098) which hides amounts and addresses while still remaining verifiable. \n\n> In this article, a new type of ring signature, A Multi-layered Linkable Spontaneous Anonymous Group signature is described which allows for hidden amounts, origins and destinations of transactions with reasonable efficiency and verifiable, trustless coin generation.\n\n*RingCT on Particl TESTNET3 is still raw but Hey! isn’t that why we do testnet in the first place?!*\n\n## Why Confidential Transactions?\n\nMuch like Particl inclusion of native segwit which provides not only the important malleability fix (which is very important in our use case) but opens the door to other great technologies like Lighting Network, the addition of Confidential Transactions was born from necessity and we were extremely excited at the opportunity when Gregory Maxwell released the concept and white paper. \n\nConfidential Transactions is part of a multi-pronged solution to privacy within Particl.
