Whilst Spaniards, Germans and Italians may consider that common belief a misconception, this was not a night to be making the argument. As the eighty three day off season concluded, football fans across the globe turned on their TV sets or, perhaps more accurately, laptops, and settled in for one of the cliffhangers of the season.

Team Sheets

As both teams starting elevens were released via social media, there was a veritable gasp in millions of Arsenal supporters living rooms. The back three read as follow; Rob Holding, Nacho Monreal & Sead Kolasinac. Oomph! Of the three, the only man to be playing in his traditional position was the inexperienced Holding. As Michael Caley put it, 'Welcome back football. I love how stupid you are.' In fact, further jaws dropped to the floor when reputed journalist Raphael Honigstein confirmed that Mertesacker was available for selection. Arsene Wenger also signalled that he had chosen to take one risk, playing Mesut Ozil, the German struggling with an ankle injury.

Match

Arsenal 1-0 '2 (Lacazette)

The players started at breakneck pace and the men wearing red were quickly rewarded. Tying for the quickest goal in Premier League history, the £48 million pound signing scored within the first 94 seconds of play. Xhaka received in the final third, lifted his gaze and switched the ball forward to the unmarked Bellerin with precision. Hector received on the edge of the box and made the backward, central pass to Elneny. Welbeck, standing in the centre of the eighteen yard box, takes the gaze of both Morgan and Maguire. Perpetual mover Lacazette, like a fly forever stirring around the canals of your fearing ears, ghosts behind the unaware Maguire. Elneny, highly regarded by many football analysts for his incisive passing, darts in the one touch ball. With a touch of the spectacular, the ball effortly thunders its way to the French men's cranium. Alexandre contorts his neck at just the right moment and thunders his effort past the sprawling Schmeichel! The new signing triumphantly lifts his arms, gleefully accepting the adulation of the crowd.

Leicester 1-1 '4 (Okazaki)

The raucous support had little time to enjoy the moment. From the moment the ball was placed in the net, Leicester were well on top. Arsenal target Riyad Mahrez, shot off a warning sign with a long range effort less than a minute after play began. Xhaka lost the ball in midfield as the 2015/16 champions harassed the deep lying playmaker, forcing a possession win in their attacking third. The Blues worked it into the area between touch line and eighteen yard, with Albrighton pulling it back and curling it with the right foot. Ozil was unable to apply pressure to the ball carrier, the first breakdown of defence from a Gunner perspective. Maguire and Mahrez were left unattended at the back post, Maguire sending his effort across goal. Both Bellerin and Kolasinac were perhaps most responsible, losing their preferred positional setup. Lacazette briefly gazed at Mahrez but never tracked the run. Maguire's looping header was knocked in from within the six yard box by Okazaki. Adam Thomas indicated prematch that this back three formation would prove to either by a wild success or destructive failure. It appeared obvious from this moment on that Arsenal would be playing with a significant achilles heel.

Leicester 2-1 '29 (Vardy)

The play broke down once again in the defensive third of the field, this time a passing exchange between Holding, Xhaka and Elneny resulting in the Egyptian gifting possession to the visitors. Whilst not utilising a consistent press, the Foxes were able to force the issue on numerous occasions periodically, bringing up memories of their championship winning season. Albrighton gathered the possession loss, paced forward and swung in a cross from the right hand side, 25 yards from goal. The cross was swept home by the gleeful Vardy, Jamie filling the gap between the ball gazing Monreal and the out positioned Kolasinac. The defensive frailties were clear and the poor passing execution through midfield was leaving them exposed.

Proceeding Period of play '30-'37

Arsenal suffered a large setback post that goal and were at significant risk of conceding another. Holding lost the ball on four occasions within that defensive third, Bellerin looking too often for the overlap and not presenting as a reliable passing option. This culminated with an opportunity for Okazaki, missing a header from directly in front, roughly 8 yards from goal.

Arsenal 2-2 '45 (Welbeck)

Parity was restored just as the players were readying themselves for the interval. The Gunners had established possessional dominance over the prior 8~ minutes, recording 71% possession for the match. Ozil played the short pass to Lacazette at the edge of the area. Much like a trademark play from his compatriot Giroud, Alexandre received with his back to goal. Morgan stood between the French men and goal, enforcing the former Lyon man to swivel and shoot. The ball slewed off the leg of the shot inhibiting Maguire and as fate would have it, into the path of the oncoming Kolasinac. The centre back had made a strong run in the area and had the presence of mind to centre the pass with Schmeichel launching toward him. Welbeck received, struggled to get the ball from out of his feet, but bulged the net with his second touch. Luck played a significant role in the goal and was much required for the home teams chances.

Half Time

The discussion at half time was led by Orbinho, who was first to mention Arsenal's dreadful opening day record, winning just one of those last seven fixtures. Colin Trainor poured cold water on all those faithful claiming three at the back helped Arsenal late last season, producing figures that showed their expected goals against actually increased, and against worse opposition. Rage continued around the back three choices and the Wenger Out activists began to voice their concern.

Leicester 3-2 '56 (Vardy)

And if that wasn't bad enough, the second half started in similar fashion to that of the middle ten minute period. The Foxes were pressing, forcing possession wins in their attacking third of the pitch. Cech saved a thunderous Mahrez strike from 20 yards and then the former Chelsea champion had to play sweeper keeper, practically saving a certain goal by getting the ball away in the nick of time from the advancing Vardy with a 35 yard dash. However, the goal duly arrived. Mahrez took an inswing corner, the most efficient type of corner as City analysts have revealed, and the man who partied throughout 15/16 got on the end of it. Whilst Arsenal played a zonal marking system, the lack of desire to get head to ball was clear. No one appeared to notice Vardy's unmarked run to the edge of the box. No one even raised the slightest of arm or leg to halt his movement. There was no man standing at the post and the Gunners got what they deserved. Jamie arrived at the scene and nonchalantly knocked away a basic glancing header from within the six yard area. In fact all three Leicester goals came from within the six yard area.

The Subs '67

If we thought the back three were weird, it was about to really send you down the rabbit hole. Giroud on for Elneny. Basic enough, Lacazette switching to the left flank and OG taking the primary role through the middle. However, Ramsey on for Holding was a system changer. Arsenal went from a back three to four, playing Ox-Kolasinac-Monreal-Bellerin. Amy Lawrence perhaps best summed it up, ' It was an extraordinary combination – a midfield player at right-back, two left-backs at centre-back and a right-back at left-back.' Extraordinary is by far and away the most apt word. The only saving grace in this impending debacle, was how poor the Arsenal defence had functioned during the first 66 minutes of play. Could it really get any worse?

Theo Walcott also come onto the field for Welbeck at the 75 minute mark.

Arsenal 3-3 '83 (Ramsey)

The substitutes had an impact within sheer seconds, Ramsey throwing his cranium to the Lacazette cross. The effort bounced just wide, but it was a sign of things to come from the Wembley hero. Ramsey played a defence splitting pass, picking out the run of Giroud as the French men broke the Leicester offside trap. He settled on the ball within the six yard box and slid a pass back to his striking compatriot. Alexandre received, attempted to squirm past a couple to no avail, before settling on the swerving close range effort that was tipped over by Schmeichel. Arsenal were battering the opponent and it appeared only a matter of time. Xhaka gained a loose ball 30 yards from goal as Leicester failed to properly clear their lines. Granit executed a pass with the outside of the right boot, spinning his effort into the path of Ramsey. 'Welsh Jesus' as he is commonly known amongst the faithful, had his path shepherded by Walcott, allowing him just enough time to settle and hammer home the volley from 12 yards. Three Gunners were cued up at that far post, perhaps suggesting that the Foxes were beginning to tire, mentally as much as anything else.

Arsenal 4-3 '85 (Giroud)

This was perhaps the most sublime finish of the lot. Xhaka takes the corner, an inswinger no less. 13 players stand and battle inside the eighteen yard area. The cross is hit to the battle of Giroud and Maguire, perhaps the strongest two players on the field. Vision from behind the goal quite clearly shows Giroud has his shirt pulled away from his body by Maguire. Olivier manages to stand his ground as the Foxes new centre half goes to ground. OG is met in the air by the equally desperate Morgan. The French men gets his head to the ball, contorting all neck muscles with as much ferocity as he can muster. The oft maligned striker watches as his header comes thundering off the upright and past the line. The stadium is sent into pandemonium, 60,000 people singing Olivier's name as he scores his 50th Arsenal goal at the Emirates (and 99th of his career).

Full Time Arsenal 4 Leicester 3

The endless media commitments soon followed. Wenger confirmed that Giroud was given the opportunity to leave before deciding that he was determined to stick it out at the Gunners. Arseblog complained about his heart. Caley produced his infographic on expected goals, suggesting that his numbers indicated Arsenal held a one goal advantage. | body |

This iconic venue is one of my favourite places to visit. If you hadn't already gathered, I'm a sports nut who makes no apology for it. The Melbourne Cricket Ground, or MCG, could easily be referred to as my home away from home. I've watched Aussie Rules Football, Cricket and Soccer played on this ground.

Established in 1853, just 20 years after Melbourne as a city was founded, this venue has attracted crowds in excess of 100,000 with regularity. This photo taken from my seat at the Australian Rules Football match last night is a good an indication of what you can expect to see. Wide expanses of green turf, parochial support for each side and the one thing the picture can't deliver, the atmosphere that'll fill your ears.

As you make your way into the ground you're greeted to a natural pastime of Australian folk. With each step the buzz of the ensuing crowd builds. Whilst buzz is an elementary term, it's also the one that best sums it up. As the game hits dramatic heights, that buzz becomes a raucous cacophony of sound.

Different in many ways to the grounds I've visited around the world, you can purchase a drink inside the ground. Looking up into the reaches of the exclusive Melbourne Cricket Club grandstand (it takes 20+ years to attain membership), you can see people sipping down beers as they enjoy their company. This perhaps sums up the culture of Australian society. Attending sport with your friends, a drink in hand and some chips in the other (priced at $4.20 as of last night), is something that the ninety-nine percentile of Australians have done at one point or another.

The picture above is taken from the 1978 Grand Final, played in front of 101,704 supporters. Prior to the all seater arrangement, crowds hit as high as 119,165 (for those wondering, that was the 1970 Grand Final). For a regular season match, expect crowds in the vicinity of 40,000 to 60,000, with an expected bump up as the finals series begins.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is dear to my heart for a litany of reasons. I still recall my first game, going with my Dad and a friend as we attended a match between Hawthorn (the brown and gold/yellow team pictured above) and the Melbourne Demons. I can recall plenty of moments, occurring both on and off the field, shared with some of my best friends. This is both a ground to watch our sporting heroes battle it out, but also to meet with friends and chat about the week they just had.

For those looking to travel to Australia at some stage, whether you're a sporting enthusiast or someone just looking to gain traditional experiences, the MCG should be first on your list. Having been to numerous grounds around the world, there is something deeply Australian about this one. Perhaps it is the wide expanse of terrain that our eyes must dutifully follow in search of a red or yellow ball? Is it the people we eat, drink and sit with? Is it the general enormity of each grandstand? Whatever the reason, I'm sure you'll have a distinctly Australian experience.

Thanks to all for spending your sacred time to read these words. I'm very thankful to both my old and new followers alike! Let me know if you'd like me to write a review on anything else distinctly Melbourne in the comments below.

|

I've watched Aussie Rules Football, Cricket and Soccer played on this ground.
\n

\n
Established in 1853, just 20 years after Melbourne as a city was founded, this venue has attracted crowds in excess of 100,000 with regularity. This photo taken from my seat at the Australian Rules Football match last night is a good an indication of what you can expect to see. Wide expanses of green turf, parochial support for each side and the one thing the picture can't deliver, the atmosphere that'll fill your ears.
\n

\n
As you make your way into the ground you're greeted to a natural pastime of Australian folk. With each step the buzz of the ensuing crowd builds. Whilst buzz is an elementary term, it's also the one that best sums it up. As the game hits dramatic heights, that buzz becomes a raucous cacophony of sound.
\n

\n
Different in many ways to the grounds I've visited around the world, you can purchase a drink inside the ground. Looking up into the reaches of the exclusive Melbourne Cricket Club grandstand (it takes 20+ years to attain membership), you can see people sipping down beers as they enjoy their company. This perhaps sums up the culture of Australian society. Attending sport with your friends, a drink in hand and some chips in the other (priced at $4.20 as of last night), is something that the ninety-nine percentile of Australians have done at one point or another.
\n

\n
The picture above is taken from the 1978 Grand Final, played in front of 101,704 supporters. Prior to the all seater arrangement, crowds hit as high as 119,165 (for those wondering, that was the 1970 Grand Final). For a regular season match, expect crowds in the vicinity of 40,000 to 60,000, with an expected bump up as the finals series begins.
\n
The Melbourne Cricket Ground is dear to my heart for a litany of reasons. I still recall my first game, going with my Dad and a friend as we attended a match between Hawthorn (the brown and gold/yellow team pictured above) and the Melbourne Demons. I can recall plenty of moments, occurring both on and off the field, shared with some of my best friends. This is both a ground to watch our sporting heroes battle it out, but also to meet with friends and chat about the week they just had.
\n
For those looking to travel to Australia at some stage, whether you're a sporting enthusiast or someone just looking to gain traditional experiences, the MCG should be first on your list. Having been to numerous grounds around the world, there is something deeply Australian about this one. Perhaps it is the wide expanse of terrain that our eyes must dutifully follow in search of a red or yellow ball? Is it the people we eat, drink and sit with? Is it the general enormity of each grandstand? Whatever the reason, I'm sure you'll have a distinctly Australian experience.
\n
Thanks to all for spending your sacred time to read these words. I'm very thankful to both my old and new followers alike! Let me know if you'd like me to write a review on anything else distinctly Melbourne in the comments below.
\n
",

| body |

I was listening to an interesting Ted Talk recently. The talker, Triston Harris, formerly of Google, spoke about the increasingly psychological tactics these companies throw upon us in order for their products to succeed. He alludes to a room filled with a hundred workers, each holding little dials. These people have the ability to shape a billion people's thoughts and feelings. It seems to be something from a Dystopian film. However, Harris admits that he has been apart of this very room.

The picture above is perhaps a good illustration. The vast majority associate fireworks with new beginnings, change and celebration. Placing a firework image at an opportune time in an advertisement could have significant effects. I began to discuss this with my family. Down the windy rabbit hole we went, Morpheus would have been proud. Thinking about the pros and cons of technology, the conclusion was that although there is a tremendous amount of availability for knowledge, the chances of immersion have severely decreased.

Immersion in a subject is the way we learn. Many of my classmates have gone on to forge careers in disciplines that they never studied for. I'm a firm believer that you are your best teacher. Our knowledge is only limited by effort to understand the topic at hand. As Harris proclaims, all technologies are seeking our most valuable of resources, time. Did I mention they're damn good at it? Facebook is designed in such a way that information we did not go looking for, incredulously finds its way into our craniums. YouTube throws us video after video with the auto play feature. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated that their biggest competitor was the need for sleep.

So what can we do to extend our immersive qualities rather than continue to tumble down the rabbit hole of declining attention capacity? The first item on the agenda must be to adapt our patterns for home we run our lives. Being aware of a cause is one thing, placing barriers between these media outlets and your time is another. I recommend reading, which I discussed last week. In fact, Microsoft released a study in 2015 suggesting that the average human focus length was 8 seconds, less than a goldfish. With mental stamina in such a decline and knowledge immersion suffering as a byproduct, time needs to be spent addressing the methods to best avoid this.

1. Keep the Phone in Lockdown and Shut off Social Media

The basic one. Set aside time either on your morning commute or towards the end of the day to answer anything pressing, especially work related emails. If you struggle to do this, build up slowly overtime. Keep in mind that studies have identified the human brain takes 20 minutes to fully sync into the task at hand. We are suited toward working on something for a duration of time, rather than broken up periods resulting every 5 minutes or so. In addition, working effectively may increase the efficiency of your work and decrease the number of hours needed in office.

2. Recognise the Correct Environment for Your Needs

This is something I've recently been playing around with. I know that I struggle to work in places where I can actively hear discussions taking place. Be that as it may, it also appears that dead silence lends itself to inefficient working habits. For me personally, I perhaps need to settle for the mean (the library seems a good place). Find out what suits you and stick with it.

3. Exercise Body and Mind

Our minds are a tool that if we don't provide information to, like an untrained muscle, it'll go to waste. Engaging discussions, puzzles and crosswords can provide the push up that your mind was after. Additionally, training the body can help increase the attention span. Focussing on a specific goal, something as simple as swimming out to that buoy or running to that post, can help train yourself to sustain focus. The recent study published by Progress in Cardiovascular Disease attributed one hour of running to an increased life expectancy of seven hours! If you need more reason, you're a tough Steemer to please.

For those interested, you can watch the Ted Talk or visited Harris' website for more thoughts on Designer Ethics.

Thanks once again for taking precious time out of your day to read these words. | body |

Our present day lives continually witness and are subject to radical societal advancements. Technologies, medicines, the 'fingertip' availability of knowledge. This is a fantastic time to be alive. That being sad, those that suffer from endless dreams of perfectionism have been left with a certain sense of entrapment. On every screen, billboard and available space fit for an advertisement, the media subjects the common individual to unspeakable, astonishing beauty. Beauty is a subjective ideal that always lays at the eyes of the beholder. As we grow older by the day, our minds wise up to the relative elements that intertwine in the creation of a beautiful individual. There is physical beauty but that is just one increasingly minimal component of a beautiful being.

This perpetual subjection to beauty can have negative effect when we start the human idiosyncrasy of comparison. I am far less beautiful than that person. Why have I been condemned to face peeling and the like as this person parades around, stunning the camera with every smile? This can become significantly daunting an experience when we suffer from skin issues.

During my skin difficulties, I sought knowledge on the particular components that were forcing the issue. As I've written about, cold showers and raw diets have proved very helpful tools. These issues were adjustments I could make for the here and now, without severely altering any preconceived concepts that rattled around in my cranium. These concepts, for the most part, were stuck to my brain like gum to the bottom of a seat. Beauty appears this way. If I don't fit these guidelines than what is the point?

This prevailing thought process is deadly. During my development from young adolescent to young adult, certain objective based facts emerged. For instance, people have their own varying issues. Some may have a skin condition, but others are likely to have issues that exceed yours tenfold. Thus, why not just appreciate who you are? You may not be the most stereotypical physically beautiful specimen the world has ever known. However, not many of us are. Accept that you can only be the best version of yourself. The best version of yourself may be tremendously skilled in areas that others may not be able to grasp. We all have our strong points. Accepting this and smiling at yourself is perhaps the best medicine invented.

That is perhaps the pervading wisdom to this article, be happy in your own skin. Speaking to a number of naturopaths over the years, each suggested that I should avoid the patternistic thoughts of a perfectionist, especially when things are out of my control. Accept who you are and be glad to be you. Though you may not look like David Beckham or an Instagram model, it really isn't necessary that you do. I've learnt to love my appearance and I continue to learn about why my skin may flare from day to day. I enjoy the challenge. I hope you learn to enjoy yours too!

Thanks to all my new followers and the tremendous support from all you fascinating Steemers through your comments and upvotes. A special thanks for taking the time out of your day to peer upon these words! Let me know if you have any words to add on the topic of skin conditions, I would love to hear from you.

|

Accepting this and smiling at yourself is perhaps the best medicine invented.
\n

\n
That is perhaps the pervading wisdom to this article, be happy in your own skin. Speaking to a number of naturopaths over the years, each suggested that I should avoid the patternistic thoughts of a perfectionist, especially when things are out of my control. Accept who you are and be glad to be you. Though you may not look like David Beckham or an Instagram model, it really isn't necessary that you do. I've learnt to love my appearance and I continue to learn about why my skin may flare from day to day. I enjoy the challenge. I hope you learn to enjoy yours too!
\n
Thanks to all my new followers and the tremendous support from all you fascinating Steemers through your comments and upvotes. A special thanks for taking the time out of your day to peer upon these words! Let me know if you have any words to add on the topic of skin conditions, I would love to hear from you.
\n
",
