| body | Sleeping is hard so let's do a thought experiment: At what point do disagreeable and irrational ideas become unacceptable in your ideal society? Let's say you're on a spaceship with 100 people leaving an exploding earth. They've chosen you as the new captain/monarch of what's left of the human race. They've willingly given you absolute power. One of those 100 people passionately believes that having freckles is a heinous deformity and shouldn't be allowed in the new world. They are adamant and will not budge on this view, no matter what anyone says. Some events happen. 1. They express this opinion to you. 2. They express this opinion to some others. 3. They convince a small group of 4 people to agree with them. 4. They express this opinion publicly to the ship. 5. They tell the people with freckles that it's their duty to abstain from procreating so the new world will be freckle-free. 6. The people with freckles understandably react with anger. They, and their supporters, come to you seeking leadership, asking you to silence this nonsense. 7. The anti-frecklers argue back that they aren't doing anything harmful, they're just expressing a view. They would never dream of forcing this view on people with freckles by harming them directly. They simply want their opinion heard. 8. The dispute gains momentum. 5 more people move to the anti-freckle camp, bringing it to 10 total. Arguments are breaking out. It is dampening morale on the ship. 9. No violence has yet occurred, but the people with freckles express to you that they feel alienated and unsafe. 10. The anti-frecklers, now 15 of them and growing, refuse to work alongside people with freckles. They demand accommodation for their views, which requires that their work be done in separate shifts from the people with freckles. Organizing this will be a huge task, but you know it may quell tensions on the ship. You are a rational human and are firmly on the side of the people with freckles, and you don't want them having to deal with this bullshit all day. The ship cannot function with fewer than 90 people. If you remove or imprison all of the anti-frecklers at point 10, everyone will die and humanity will end forever. You can do anything you want at any of the 10 points in this story. What do you do, and at what point? |

They demand accommodation for their views, which requires that their work be done in separate shifts from the people with freckles. Organizing this will be a huge task, but you know it may quell tensions on the ship. You are a rational human and are firmly on the side of the people with freckles, and you don't want them having to deal with this bullshit all day. \n\nThe ship cannot function with fewer than 90 people. If you remove or imprison all of the anti-frecklers at point 10, everyone will die and humanity will end forever. \n\nYou can do anything you want at any of the 10 points in this story. What do you do, and at what point?",

| body | Online dating used to just be for depressed, basement-dwelling weirdos who were too awkward to talk to humans in the surface world. It was great. Now everyone's using it and it blows. Most guys I talk to say they rarely get responses on apps and sites like OkCupid. That sucks, because they're really great guys. Why are these stuck-up women willfully ignoring their heartfelt inquiries? Not all of us can look like Abercrombie models!! Well, they're not necessarily ignoring you because you're not a bronze god. They're probably ignoring you for the same reason you stopped checking your first email account - the spam has taken over. Many young women using online dating sites get up to 50 messages a week, most of which are just utter garbage. Which sounds bitchy to say, but hear me out: the vast majority of these are not some sweet guy who just wants to get to know me. They're people casting a wide net over everything they can find with a picture and a (probable) vagina. Let's look at a typical inbox, and you'll see why your lovely messages are getting buried under mountains of stupid. --- The Digital Catcall I get a lot of "hey sexii" or "ur gorgeous" or "u have a great ass." Compliments are great, but these aren't compliments - a compliment makes someone feel good, and starts a conversation. These make me feel like you're typing with your boner, and they go nowhere. If you want a lady's attention, you're going to have to open with something she doesn't hear when she walks past a construction site. The Ctrl+V "Hi there! I'm new to the area and I'm trying to meet new people. You seem really interesting! Let's chat :)" This is a bot message. Do not send this to girls if you are not a bot. The smart ones will assume you are a bot. Also, I don't have much interest in a guy if it's clear that he's sent the same message to every girl in his match list. The Cover Letter "Hi I'm Grant, I have a steady job and my own car. I have a 2-bedroom apartment that I pay for myself." Honey we're all very proud, but what are YOU like? If you searched for something unique about yourself to say and this is what you came up with, you need to go try some drugs. The Druglord "Hey I've got some molly I'm testing I'll give you some for a hj or $10" It seems like tons of people have this business model where they exclusively market narcotics via dating sites. I guess there are fewer cops watching? I don't know. What happened to the good old days of just having people order "special sauce" from that one off-brand pizza place? The SAT Vocab List "I habitually notice people who are fellow polymaths like me. You've intrigued and piqued my interest, but I ponder, are your other idiosyncrasies as tantalizing?" Everybody has that friend who will always sub a 4-syllable word for a 1-syllable word just to see if you can keep up. If you are this friend, take note: People don't roll their eyes because they're impressed with your verbosity. They roll their eyes because you sound like a fucking prick. The Cry for Help "Hi I'm Steven I just got out of a really long relationship cause it turned out she was a bitch. She completely ruined my life and now I'm all alone and I feel so hollow. Why are women horrible to me? You are so beautiful, I could really see our kids being very healthy. I need someone amazing and kind like you to..." This man doesn't need a girlfriend, he needs a counselor. Taking care of a stranger's mental breakdown is not my responsibility. I send my thoughts and prayers and then I swipe left HARD. The Shameless Proposition "Hey I'm in town for one night wanna come over and try the hot tub at my airbnb? ;)" Sometimes you just wanna bone. I get that. Sometimes I just wanna bone. Plenty of people use online dating apps just to find hookups, and that's great - by all means be a sexually liberated free-spirit love junkie if that's what makes you happy. But blasting your dick pics indiscriminately to everyone in the state isn't a good use of your time or mine. Get a Tinder. Motorcycle Seeking Woman Put up a damn picture of yourself. I don't want to go out with your car, or your bike, or your dog, or your weed. If you spent your whole summer restoring that Impala, that's awesome, put that picture up, but your main picture should be of your face. It's a dating app. It's not a crime to want to see if you might be physically attracted to someone. The Message That's So Incoherent I'm Worried I'm Having a Stroke and Just Can't Read Anymore "Heu bby ur liek soo omg Hey?? Very gorgusss! :X" Usually when I get these I go to their profile and one of two things happen. 30% of the time it's "Oh ok he's relatively new to English. Good job learning things Stefan!" 70% of the time it's "Jesus Christ he grew up in America and has made it into engineering school." I get it. He's drunk. But I've been drunk plenty, and this has never happened to my brain. Am I doing it wrong? The "Mature Man" Look Dad, I understand that for some people, age is just a number. Not for me. In fact, there is a handy indicator on my profile that will tell you whether I'm into older guys. Mine says 21-31. That's not 21+31. If you're 50 and trying to go out with a college junior, "mature" is not how I'd describe you. The Double Message 5pm: "Hey how are you?" 6:30pm: "Wow no reply huh? :(" Never do this. Oh my god never do this. Tell your friends and family never to do this. Let me explain: I might have been about to reply. I might have just been busy, or thinking of what to say back. Or maybe I just wasn't interested and didn't feel like replying "sorry not interested" because that's fucking rude. Either way, what you're doing is trying to guilt me into replying to you - if that worked, you'd ALREADY be in an unhealthy relationship. Just "hi" This isn't annoying or wrong in any way. It's just not interesting. It's a perfectly good way to start a conversation if you're in an elevator with a pretty girl. But we're not in an elevator, we're in the inbox of a straight female in her 20s on the Internet - picture saying "hi" to a woman while 20 other guys are also trying to get her attention/number/tittypics/bank info. Ask if she saw the latest episode of that show you both like. Ask if she's so excited for the typography convention this weekend. Ask if she wants to get brunch and play Risk. Tell her a crazy fact about owls. Be memorable, and if that means you risk sounding weird, even better! Who wants to talk to someone who's not a little weird? --- Keep trying, guys. Everybody deserves to be loved, and that includes you. (Sorry for the hippie bullshit but it's true). Just be patient, and understand that if a girl ignores you online, it's not personal. |

I need someone amazing and kind like you to...\"\n\nThis man doesn't need a girlfriend, he needs a counselor. Taking care of a stranger's mental breakdown is not my responsibility. I send my thoughts and prayers and then I swipe left HARD.\n\nThe Shameless Proposition\n\"Hey I'm in town for one night wanna come over and try the hot tub at my airbnb? ;)\"\nSometimes you just wanna bone. Get a Tinder.\n\nMotorcycle Seeking Woman\nPut up a damn picture of yourself. I don't want to go out with your car, or your bike, or your dog, or your weed. If you spent your whole summer restoring that Impala, that's awesome, put that picture up, but your main picture should be of your face. It's a dating app. It's not a crime to want to see if you might be physically attracted to someone.\n\nThe Message That's So Incoherent I'm Worried I'm Having a Stroke and Just Can't Read Anymore\n\"Heu bby ur liek soo omg Hey?? Very gorgusss! :X\"\nUsually when I get these I go to their profile and one of two things happen. 30% of the time it's \"Oh ok he's relatively new to English. Good job learning things Stefan!\" 70% of the time it's \"Jesus Christ he grew up in America and has made it into engineering school.\"\nI get it. He's drunk. But I've been drunk plenty, and this has never happened to my brain. Am I doing it wrong?\n\nThe \"Mature Man\"\nLook Dad, I understand that for some people, age is just a number. Not for me. In fact, there is a handy indicator on my profile that will tell you whether I'm into older guys. Mine says 21-31. That's not 21+31. If you're 50 and trying to go out with a college junior, \"mature\" is not how I'd describe you.\n\nThe Double Message\n5pm: \"Hey how are you?\"\n6:30pm: \"Wow no reply huh? :(\"\nNever do this. Oh my god never do this. Tell your friends and family never to do this. \nLet me explain: I might have been about to reply. I might have just been busy, or thinking of what to say back. Or maybe I just wasn't interested and didn't feel like replying \"sorry not interested\" because that's fucking rude. Either way, what you're doing is trying to guilt me into replying to you - if that worked, you'd ALREADY be in an unhealthy relationship. \n\nJust \"hi\"\nThis isn't annoying or wrong in any way. It's just not interesting. It's a perfectly good way to start a conversation if you're in an elevator with a pretty girl. But we're not in an elevator, we're in the inbox of a straight female in her 20s on the Internet - picture saying \"hi\" to a woman while 20 other guys are also trying to get her attention/number/tittypics/bank info. \n\nAsk if she saw the latest episode of that show you both like. Ask if she's so excited for the typography convention this weekend. Ask if she wants to get brunch and play Risk. Tell her a crazy fact about owls. Be memorable, and if that means you risk sounding weird, even better! Who wants to talk to someone who's not a little weird? \n\n---\n\nKeep trying, guys. Everybody deserves to be loved, and that includes you. (Sorry for the hippie bullshit but it's true). Just be patient, and understand that if a girl ignores you online, it's not personal.",

| author | sembervox |
| body | The first few times you use Uber or Lyft it can feel like a socially weird experience. How do you talk to this person who's car you're in? Are you buddies? What are the social norms for this brand new routine you've never had before? Damn it you finally stopped saying "you, too!" after the usher says "enjoy your movie!" and now you have to get familiar with a whole new interpersonal system - where the drivers can rate you! Maybe you're not that stressed about it. But in case you are, here's me. I've been a full-time Uber and Lyft driver in the Denver area for over a year. I thought I'd take some time to answer a few questions about Uber etiquette that I get on a regular basis from newer users. Of course none of these are hard-and-fast rules; this is just what I've learned from my own experiences. --- Do I sit in the front or the back? Either is fine. I've noticed that people from large cities who are used to taxis tend to sit in the back out of habit. Do I have to like... talk to you? No. If you want me to shut up and be a taxi, I'll shut up and be a taxi. I understand you may have just gotten off of a 14-hour flight. You may be socially anxious. Maybe both. Just do me a favor: sit in the back if you're not going to speak the whole ride. Silence is weird when you're sharing an armrest. Can I play my music? Yes. Uber's app lets you play your music through your driver's phone if you have Spotify's premium service, and you can also ask your driver to borrow their aux cable. Of course, they're not required to have one, so they might not. Just try to be considerate. This isn't your car - the driver doesn't have to turn it up to 11 if he doesn't want to. Can I use your phone charger? Probably. Please ask first. Drivers aren't required to charge your phone, but of course if mine isn't almost dead I'm happy to let you have some juice. Just please don't rip the cord out of my phone without asking (this has happened). Can I eat/drink/smoke in here? You can certainly eat in your Uber or Lyft. Sometimes your tummy's got a case of the rumblins. Just please don't make a mess! Always ask your driver if it's OK before you hop in the car with a bendy straw in a whiskey bottle. Be aware of your state's open container laws. Your driver is not exempt from them. In many states, if a cop sees you drinking, your driver could face heavy fines and have their Uber or Lyft account suspended. Do not smoke in my car. I drive other people around for a living. I also like living. Can I bring my dog? I love dogs and I'm excited to hang out with yours. That said, it's always a good idea to text your driver before they arrive to make sure they're OK with dogs. And keep in mind, muddy paws can make a big mess. Bring a towel if it's wet outside so your dog can sit on it. How do I find you? If you're getting picked up at a large venue or a multi-building complex, try to drop your pin at the spot where you'll be when you come out. If you just put in the address or use your current GPS location, the pin drops in the center of the whole address. I have no way of knowing which entrance of the mall you'll come out of if the pin is in the middle of it. Also, try and be visible. Wave when you see me. All I get when I accept the ride on Uber is your name. Any of these people could be Sam. If you don't do anything when you see me, I'll assume you aren't you and drive right by. Keep an eye on your phone - both Uber and Lyft show the approximate location of your driver on the map. If you just can't find your driver, text or call them and ask where they are. It's very possible they're just on the other side of the street or around a corner. It's almost always more efficient for you to come to them, but be sure to communicate this so you don't just swap places. Can you wait? I'll be out in a minute! Both Uber and Lyft will tell you approximately how long it will be until your driver arrives. You should do your best to be waiting outside when the driver gets there. If you text me asking me to hold on, I'll probably wait a couple of extra minutes to be courteous. If I pull up and you're nowhere to be seen and won't answer my texts, I'll wait five minutes before assuming you've changed your mind about needing a ride. My driver canceled the ride! WTF? Your driver didn't cancel on you just to be a dick. Any number of things can come up during the drive from where he is to where you are. Maybe he realized he was almost out of gas. Maybe he got in a drone accident. Maybe he missed an exit and realized that mistake would add ten minutes to your wait time. It could be anything, but it's not personal. I try to text my passengers to let them know why I canceled a ride, but since I'm driving, that's not always possible or safe. This isn't the way I normally take... I'm happy to go whatever route makes you comfortable, or take any shortcuts you want to share. But I am using GPS. We will get there. If your driver is very clearly going the wrong way, make sure you entered the correct address. Can we go to that taco place by the bank? I'm gonna need some more specifics. Uber drivers get to know the city pretty well, but they don't have phonebooks in their heads. If you can, try to enter your destination before your driver arrives. Telling the driver where you're going after he picks you up means he has to enter it into his phone, which takes time - time you're paying for. Can you make multiple stops? Absolutely, silly! I'm getting paid to drive you where you're going. I will happily take as much of your money as you want to give me. However, be aware of which service you're using - Uber and Lyft both now offer carpool options, UberPOOL and Lyft Line. These features allow me to pick up a second passenger if they're going along your route. If you're using these, I can't stop somewhere else, because that would delay another person's ride. I'm going 60 miles away, is that okay? I'm a full-time driver with no other schedule commitments. For me, long rides pay the rent. However, if you want to be extra courteous, it is nice to text your driver in advance if they're in for an hour-long drive. They may have been planning to jump online for a few minutes and now need to notify someone they'll be late. Ultimately though, unpredictable schedules are a risk we take with this job. I feel like my driver did a bad job... but is this a one-star job? Give whatever rating you feel is appropriate. If your driver was rude or incompetent, you're possibly saving future passengers the hassle of dealing with him by giving a lower rating. On both platforms, a rating of one or two stars means the system will never match you with that driver again, even if they're closest to you - you'll never have to deal with them again. This is also true for the ratings we give passengers. I wish I had that ability when I was a server. You're great! How do I make sure I get you next time? Thanks! But unfortunately, the system will only match you with the closest driver. Since the nature of my job is to move from place to place, there's a good chance I'll be hours away the next time you need a ride. There's also a good chance I won't be working. Most Uber drivers choose the job because of the total flexibility - if we had to be on-call for specific customers, most of us couldn't do it. Do I tip? On Uber: No. It's not expected in my area, at least. Uber's training videos tell drivers to refuse tips unless you insist. A driver shouldn't give you a low star rating just because you didn't give him some extra cash. On Lyft: YES. Lyft fares are lower, and Lyft drivers also keep a lower percentage of fares. Lyft's app prompts you to tip after your ride. Take a second to decide if your driver was outstanding, or just OK. If they went the extra mile (figuratively), tip accordingly. --- That wound up being longer than I expected, but I'm sure I missed plenty. I'm not an expert, but I'd be happy to answer any questions about my experiences as a rideshare driver. Safe travels! edit: formatting |

Safe travels! edit: formatting |

| body | The first few times you use Uber or Lyft it can feel like a socially weird experience. Do I sit in the front or the back? Either is fine. I've noticed that people from large cities who are used to taxis tend to sit in the back out of habit. Do I have to like... talk to you? No. If you want me to shut up and be a taxi, I'll shut up and be a taxi. I understand you may have just gotten off of a 14-hour flight. You may be socially anxious. Maybe both. Just do me a favor: sit in the back if you're not going to speak the whole ride. That wound up being longer than I expected, but I'm sure I missed plenty. I'm not an expert, but I'd be happy to answer any questions about my experiences as a rideshare driver. Safe travels! |

"body": "The first few times you use Uber or Lyft it can feel like a socially weird experience. How do you talk to this person who's car you're in? Are you buddies? What are the social norms for this brand new routine you've never had before? Damn it you finally stopped saying \"you, too!\" after the usher says \"enjoy your movie!\" and now you have to get familiar with a whole new interpersonal system - where the drivers can rate you!\n\nMaybe you're not that stressed about it. But in case you are, here's me. I've been a full-time Uber and Lyft driver in the Denver area for over a year. I thought I'd take some time to answer a few questions about Uber etiquette that I get on a regular basis from newer users. Of course none of these are hard-and-fast rules; this is just what I've learned from my own experiences.\n\nDo I sit in the front or the back?\n\nEither is fine. I've noticed that people from large cities who are used to taxis tend to sit in the back out of habit.\n\nDo I have to like... talk to you?\n\nNo. If you want me to shut up and be a taxi, I'll shut up and be a taxi. I understand you may have just gotten off of a 14-hour flight. You may be socially anxious. Maybe both. Just do me a favor: sit in the back if you're not going to speak the whole ride. Silence is weird when you're sharing an armrest.\n\nCan I play my music?\n\nYes. Uber's app lets you play your music through your driver's phone if you have Spotify's premium service, and you can also ask your driver to borrow their aux cable. Of course, they're not required to have one, so they might not. \n\nJust try to be considerate. This isn't your car - the driver doesn't have to turn it up to 11 if he doesn't want to. \n\nCan I use your phone charger?\n\nProbably. Please ask first. Drivers aren't required to charge your phone, but of course if mine isn't almost dead I'm happy to let you have some juice. Just please don't rip the cord out of my phone without asking (this has happened).\n\nCan I eat/drink/smoke in here?\n\nYou can certainly eat in your Uber or Lyft. Sometimes your tummy's got a case of the rumblins. Just please don't make a mess!\n\nAlways ask your driver if it's OK before you hop in the car with a bendy straw in a whiskey bottle. Be aware of your state's open container laws. Your driver is not exempt from them. In many states, if a cop sees you drinking, your driver could face heavy fines and have their Uber or Lyft account suspended.\n\nDo not smoke in my car. I drive other people around for a living. I also like living.\n\nCan I bring my dog?\n\nI love dogs and I'm excited to hang out with yours. That said, it's always a good idea to text your driver before they arrive to make sure they're OK with dogs. And keep in mind, muddy paws can make a big mess. Bring a towel if it's wet outside so your dog can sit on it.\n\nHow do I find you?\n\nIf you're getting picked up at a large venue or a multi-building complex, try to drop your pin at the spot where you'll be when you come out. If you just put in the address or use your current GPS location, the pin drops in the center of the whole address. I have no way of knowing which entrance of the mall you'll come out of if the pin is in the middle of it.\n\nAlso, try and be visible. Wave when you see me. All I get when I accept the ride on Uber is your name. Any of these people could be Sam.
