      "body": "Diamond last forever, and so does plastic. Humankind's use of plastic has given birth to a new type of rock, a plastiglomerate, made up of various mixtures of sedimentary grains and natural debris, which is then held together by hardened molten plastic. Some scientists, environmentalists, and geologists have proposed that plastiglomerate will be the marker horizon of human pollution on the geologic record, leaving behind plastic fossils for those in the future to find.\n\n![Jazvac_02_PARK.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTRG8x2bjX7HEvT15LnCrTxfSXyBe6oX1FAJoHSerV6xH/Jazvac_02_PARK.jpg)\n​Photo: Jeff Elstone\n\n\n\nFirst reported on the Big Island of Hawaii, Charles Moore, a sea captain and oceanographer for the Algalita Marine Research Institute, first discovered deposits of plastiglomerates in 2006 while surveying the Kamilo beach on Hawaii. Upon further investigation of the plastiglomerate samples by geology professor, Dr. Patricia Corcoran and visual artist professor, Kelly Jazvac, discovered that approximately 20% of the plastiglomerates found at Kamilo beach consisted of fishing ropes and lines, 22% consisted of plastic packaging, and one half consisted of plastic confetti. Based off the location of Kamilo beach being within the North Pacific subtropical gyre, made the beach more susceptible to accumulating plastic waste from the ocean, resulting in Kamilo becoming one of the dirtiest beaches in the world.\n\n​\n\nAlthough the island of Hawaii is volcanically active, it is concluded that there is no significant correlation with recorded locations of flowing lava in Hawaii and the location of Kamilo beach, therefore, the plastiglomerates found on the beach of Kamilo were formed anthropogenically.       "body": "Water, the giver of life, the most precious and integral resource on planet Earth, is quickly drying up in the City of Cape Town, South Africa. Afflicted with the worst drought to hit the region in over a century, Cape town, a city with a population of 3.7 million, known for its beautiful landscapes and harbours, is currently experiencing the nightmare scenario of completely running out of fresh water and is predicted to do so by April of 2018.\n\n![3f5375e954e64ac686097f990bc39108_18.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXgBgXWbRCYX9KigeuAieMWCdUtJPtfrJxYHbMmKa3K3u/3f5375e954e64ac686097f990bc39108_18.jpg)\nPhoto: CNN\n\nThe Western Cape Government has issued a statement declaring \"We have reached a point of no return\", and states that 'Day Zero', the day in which the taps run dry, will most likely occur under current trends. In response to the crisis, the Western Cape Government has announced new emergency measures to limit the water usage of its citizens and visitors by enforcing a punitive tariff on those using water above 6 000 litres per month. The government has also introduced a level 6B restriction of 50 litres, around 13 gallons per person per day, coming into effect on 1 February 2018.\n\n​\n\nConsidered a developed major city, if 'Day Zero' were to occur, Cape Town would be the very first major city in the world to experience such a disaster. This brings up the question of why this situation began in the first place, with many factors all intertwining and leading up to the situation. The biggest factor in this water crisis is the drought of the century afflicting Cape Town, bringing around one-third of normal levels of rainfall for three consecutive years, in effect causing declining dam and reservoir levels. Another cause of this crisis is the lack of responsible water usage of the 3.7 million citizens of Cape Town, where statistics indicate that three-fifths of people are completely ignoring the Level 6B restrictions and using more than 87 litres a day per person.\n\n​\n\nThe 'Day Zero' scenario, if implemented, would mean that fresh water capacity for the city would hit below 13.5% (As of January 24th, 2018, Cape Town's water capacity is at 17.2%) and all municipal water supplies would have to be turned off, with the exceptions of essential services such as hospitals.
