The heat wraps around your existence like a damp blanket. Fortunately, The historic grounds host a number of coconut vendors that will sell you one with a straw inside for about 50 cents. \n\n(Constantly was wipin sweat off my face)\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmR36wx3y6AzHbn5grVFkQrYg6LTxZVwPdUwYjhMJwfFN5/Wipin%20Sweat.jpg\n\nI've always heard about the beauty and majesty of the ancient Khmer ruins in Siem Reap, but it was not until I visited them in person that I fully experienced what friends and strangers had tried to convey. The first thing you notice: Angkor Wat is massive! The structures are much larger than pictures online lead one to believe. While many think of the main temple complex,  its five elongated domes stretching skyward, as the main attraction, there are actually dozens of temple complexes and structures scattered throughout a large part of the jungle. \n\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmUQgEqikFjZAKYeoFNAvcMeYX8pRjowMvf1bMB9GUs3ZJ/Cambodia-11.jpg\n\nI recommend spending at least two days there. We visited the park in two consecutive days and still did not have enough time to explore the numerous sites within the old Khmer capital. Each structure is completely covered with sculptures and carvings, impressive in their intricacy and volume. Some reliefs depict Hindu epics, while others display Khmer warriors, dancers, or organic patterns. Cambodia is HUMID. \n\nMy friends and I had a long vacation for Chinese New Year, and after much deliberation, we collectively decided that Cambodia would be our destination for the 10-day holiday. There were five of us in total, but Nick and myself were the first to arrive, landing the night before the rest of our motley crew. \n\nPhnom Penh served as our home base for the majority of the trip. While most focus on the wonders of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, we found the capital to be just as much of an adventure. Buddhist monks in saffron robes, street hawkers, and tuktuk drivers populated the public spaces, creating an atmosphere much more unique to the locality than I have grown accustomed to in Shanghai's cosmopolitan sprawl. \n\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmXRnN5G6giomjSVRKF23cL86tU849v24j1bnPMGr1Erja/Cambodia-6.jpg\n\nThe city contains plenty of affordable hostels for travelers, many with beautiful views. Our own (I believe it was called \"Panorama\") featured a sweeping view of the Mekong Delta from the 6th floor balcony that also housed a bar. The hostel only cost about $7 per night. \n\nThe first day was spent exploring the royal palace, rooftop bars, \"happy\" pizza restaurants, night markets, and was filled with numerous tuktuk rides to and fro. We did a lot of pretty amazing stuff, but every time I think back, I don't know if you can beat a $1 tuktuk ride offering new sights and a cool breeze. Find some bugs or flora, walk up close to your subject, focus, then take the shot. Voila! A wonderful macro picture that reveals the hidden world of shapes and textures that usually escape the naked eye. Yea, then I tried taking my first macro shots. I could not have been more wrong. \n\nI recently visited Japan (post with pictures on that coming soon) and naturally wanted to purchase something for my camera in one of the world renown photography emporiums located in Tokyo or Osaka. I went straight to Yoshina and Bic camera in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. It was the best and worst decision of the trip. I walked out with Fujifilm’s new 80mm (120mm equivalent) F/2.8 OIS WR Macro lens (bought with Bitcoin :D, so cool that you can do that there). I had already done some research previously on the lens and was amazed at the image quality of the exposures produced with it. However, I soon realized that the vast majority of the shots I captured were not utilizing the lens’s macro capabilities. As it turns out, the lens is also superb for portraiture. The 80mm creates pleasant bokeh, handles well, and is quite possibly the sharpest lens I have shot with. I noticed some yellow flowers (not sure what kind) in the pond the day before with numerous bees swarming around them, hard at work. First thing I learned: trying to focus on an insect that is moving on the macro level is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, especially considering that even at F/8, you focus range is about 1-2 cm. \n\n(While I wanted the ants in focus, I only got about 1cm of the flower petal)\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmb7FMuW2XatcmJGBqiyo76iMHiQ8BndkhatoZPq89szDp/April%202018-9.jpg\n\nYou need to stop down enough to make sure as much of the subject is in focus as possible, because at wider apertures you’re likely to only get a leg or antenna in focus while the rest of the shot is immediately obliterated in a sea of bokeh. This often means a slower shutter speed is required to let in enough light, which makes moving insects even MORE difficult to shoot because they will turn out blurry in the photo from the slightest movement. \n\n(ISO 400 F/8  1/125sec)\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmZK492is4tGkko9kUvVgjjErrSqZaUK89NQQN5pVkYosT/April%202018-8.jpg\n\nBelow are my first attempts at macro photography. Some are not as sharp as they should be, others aren’t properly exposed, and others are just plain bad. However, I learned a great deal during this first outing and already have some ideas of what I could do differently in the future. \n\nThings that are easy to fix: \n-The flowers were in the pond and I was on the deck next to it, making it difficult for me to actually get as close as I wanted. \n-I was impatient, chasing bees from flower to flower. I should instead wait patiently by a single flower, ready to strike if a bee lands within my frame.\n-The flowers I was near had closed petals, so when the  bees landed on them, I only had about 1 second to take the shot before they disappeared into the flower.\n\nThings that can be fixed with money:\n-I had to crank up the ISO with some of these shots to use an appropriate shutter-speed, making some of the shots somewhat grainy. So, I went ahead an purchased an LED ring-flash for my camera, which will allow me to shoot at much quicker shutter speeds. \n\nI have a hell of a lot to learn, but man, this is so damn fun! Interesting to look at the world on a completely different scale. It takes a very different creative approach. \n\nFeel free to comment however you like!
