      "body": "I think that just about everyone who knows me will agree that I am mostly a pretty sane guy.  I do have a fondness though for the unusual, the quirky, things that might by some be considered at least a little bit crazy.\n\nThat's OK.  Sometimes, crazy is good.  I think that there are a lot of us -- individuals who wish to make a mark on our world by creating something significant, something that will last and be enjoyed by others for hundreds of years to come.\n\nAre you like that?  Let's be crazy together!\n\nThat's why I am building the Pirámide en Panamá.  Yes, that means ‘Pyramid in Panama’ in Spanish.  Pyramids built in antiquity have been found all over the world, not just the ones we all know about in Egypt.  Mayan and Aztec cultures in Mexico and Central and South America also built pyramids and more are being discovered all the time.\n\nStrangely, although it is surrounded by other countries with beautiful and ancient pyramids, there are none to be found in the Republic of Panama. \n\nNone. \n\nNow we can't have that, can we?  We want to rectify the situation by building a pyramid in the beautiful Panamanian province of Chiriqui, near the Costa Rican border.  It will be in an adapted combination of the Mayan and Aztec styles, which are very similar.  Examples of both can be found in neighbouring countries of Columbia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Guatemala.\n\nYou and I and some of my friends and partners are going to do this together. \n\nHow?  Let me tell you:\n\nWho we are:  I am a Canadian businessman with a love of Latin America and its culture and people.  I am part of a group of Panamanian, Canadian and American investors who are making our land available for the construction of the pyramid. \n\nWhy?  We think it would be fun and a great attraction for locals and tourists alike.  Because we want to provide free access to everyone, we are seeking help to fund the project because without charging admission, there is no way we will be able to recoup the cost.  Because we are supplying the land without cost, expenses are for design and construction only.  Once we have our plans complete, architectural drawings made and permits obtained, we will launch a crowd-funding campaign on www.indiegogo.com.\n\nWhere:  Just outside the small village of Rovira Arriba in the Chiriqui province of Panama, about an hour's drive east of the Costa Rican border.\n\nWhat:  Because the footprint of a pyramid of the size we want to build would be very large and take many tons of rock to build, we have come up with an ingenious solution.  There is a ravine on our property, leading down to the Rio David, and we will construct only one side of a pyramid (like a facade) against the side of the ravine.  It will rise several meters above the side of the ravine, with an observation deck at the top so visitors can look down upon the river and northwards towards Volcan Baru, Panama’s highest mountain and dormant volcano.\n\nWhen:  We are currently creating designs and plans and hope to begin construction in late 2017.  \n\nHow:  Thanks to Volcan Baru’s eruptions over millennia, our land has hundreds of thousands of volcanic rocks.  The rocks range from the size of a soccer ball on up to the size of a compact car.  We will use local rock-building experts to construct the pyramid facade.  Stairs on the facade will lead down to a plateau beside the river below.  At the riverside will be a picnic area with tables and benches and fire pits, all built out of the same volcanic rock.  To the left side of the picnic area will be an entry to a small but pristine rain forest, also owned by us.  The pyramid project will include the creation of hiking trails through the rain forest.  Along the trail will be rest and observation areas from which to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings.\n\nTo us, this is a labour of love.  \n\nWe do not pretend that we will absolutely accurately create a (Mayan or Aztec) pyramid; we just want to do the best we can to show visitors to the site what a pyramid built hundreds or even thousands of years ago might have looked like.  \n\nIt will be fun to climb up and down the stairs on the facade, to rest at the riverside below the facade and to hike the trails through the rain forest.\n\nWe are still deciding what the rewards for contributions to our crowd-funding will be and will announce those in due time.  There will be a project website which will track the progress of the project and at which contributors will also be acknowledged.  Larger donors might have their name on features such as benches, tables, fire pits and such.\n\nWe think that this project is unique and exciting and that it will attract the attention we need from contributors to complete the project as we envision it and to give visitors a free and exciting way to spend some time in a beautiful part of Panama.\n\nInspiration\n\nRovira Arriba is a short distance west of the highway that connects the world famous mountain town of Boquete and the bustling city of David on the Pacific coast.  Rovira Arriba is a bit over an hour’s drive from the border of Costa Rica.  There are many activities in this part of Chiriqui, ranging from zip lines, hiking, riding, climbing Volvan Baru, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, and much more.  Adding a free, historically interesting feature in the form of our pyramid facade that tourists and locals alike can enjoy, would be a great boon to the area.\n\nAlthough we are still working on design drawings and plans for the pyramid facade, we can show you what we have so far.  One photograph below shows an ancient pyramid constructed elsewhere in the Americas.  Our design will be a bit different, but the photo at least shows similar construction and a rough idea of what our facade might look like when viewed from the bottom.  Also shown is where the pyramid facade will be constructed, at the end of a cul de sac with a drop down into the ravine leading to the Rio David and our picnic and recreational area.  The tip of the pyramid will rise above road level and will be accessible by stairs from the road.  The road will be paved afterwards and a parking lot will be built to the left.  Hiking trails to the rain forest area will lead from both the parking lot and the picnic area at the bottom of the pyramid.\n \nAlso shown is a recent rendering that most closely approximates our intent.       "body": "A hypothetical group of friends go out for dinner and drinks. Nick, Gabe, Ashton and Abigail all have steak and salad, share a bottle of Merlot and all have equally-priced desserts. The bill comes to $160.00, including tip. How much does each pay? \n\nAny reasonable person, in the absence of evidence about any overriding prior agreement between any of the diners, would say $40.00 each. \n\nOK. So far so good. Let's change the scenario a bit. What if Abigail had only a salad, a bottle of water and skipped dessert? For the sake of argument, let's say the bill still totaled $160.00. Should each diner still pay $40.00, even though Abigail only ate $15.00 worth of food? Of course not. Each diner should pay for what he or she ordered. That would be fair. \n\nWhat if there were 200 diners? 25,000? 30,000,000? 320,000,000? Would each person still pay for what he or she actually consumes, or would the larger number of diners somehow change the definition of what reasonably constitutes each person's fair share? \n\nIf we can stipulate that there would be a near-instant system of calculating each person's share, then the number of diners is really irrelevant. Each should still pay for what he or she personally consumes. If some diners were there as part of a family, or if some were dating others in the group, then prior arrangements or understandings might exist that would have some diners voluntarily paying the share of others. \n\nWhat if it's not a restaurant meal that we are talking about? What if we are considering, say, childcare expenses. Or perhaps healthcare expenses. What about educational spending? Does the nature of the expenses have any bearing on what is 'fair?' \n\nI have one child, aged eleven. Is it fair that I pay, through taxes, the educational costs of others with more children? No! \n\nWhat about health care? I went to a doctor's office once, when I was six years old, to get a certificate saying that I was well enough to return to school after a bout of whooping cough. He didn't treat the malady. My mother did that, using various home remedies. He just agreed that I was well enough to return to school. The next time I attended a doctor's office was when I was twenty-two and needed a physical examination for admission to university as a 'mature student.' To pay for my 'fair share' of the expenses of the vaunted Canadian health care system, I have paid through taxes, over the years, many times what my true 'fair share' would be. At age 58, I still rarely go to see a medical doctor. \n\nThe political left is braying constantly about everyone paying their fair share. The implication is always that the 'rich' are somehow not paying their fair share of the cumulative tax burden. They have more, earn more, so they should pay more, even if they don't consume more. Does anyone, anywhere, with more than three or four living brain cells actually believe that? \n\nLet's go back to our hypothetical diners. If Abigail earns ten times as much as her three friends, should she pay a correspondingly larger share of the meal expenses? No. Should she pay ten times as much in income tax? That would certainly be the lesser of a number of tax evils, since it would at least mean that she was paying the same percentage of her wages in tax as did her friends. The reality, however, in our graduated income tax system, is that she would be in a higher tax bracket than her friends. Because of her higher resultant marginal tax rate, she would pay not ten times more but some multiple higher than ten, depending on actually how much money she earns. \n\nIs that fair? Not by any sane definition. Let's call the system what it is. Legalized theft. Extortion. \n\nSomehow, we are told by the left, it is perfectly OK for the 'poor' to pay little or no taxes, while the 'rich' must pony up much, much more than the value of what they actually consume in the way of various public 'services.' If the cost, per person, to live in a country is (hypothetically) $20,000 per annum, is it fair that some people pay virtually nothing in taxes while others pay tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, or millions of dollars? No. \n\nLet's understand what is going on. Anyone who is contributing less than what it costs to pay his or her share of the cumulative cost of support, is getting charity from those who contribute more than his or her share. Let's stop bleating about how the rich are not contributing their fair share and be grateful that they are helping pay the way for everyone else. \n\nNow that would be fair.",
