Facebook just recently got caught paid some of its users to gain access to their most personal data. This might sounds not malicious but and some said \"Hey at least Facebook paid them!\". But, unfortunately Facebook also target children and teenagers with these programs. And, God knows what else the program that Facebook implemented and we still don't know. Last year, Facebook also got caught of selling their users data to Communist China. And we also don't know what the Communist China does with your data. And don't get me started to Twitter.\n\nThe last case of Covington High School kids that got bullied in social media because of false pretense that these kids 'mocked' a Native American was so disgusting. Twitter as a main platform when the bullying started, DIDN'T ban any verified account that spew threats and hatred towards these innocent kids. Kathy Griffin, failed comedian, even asked her followers to dox these kids in her twitter. Many sick journalists with blue checkmark also piled on these kids with crazy remarks such as these kids should be punched and so on.  And even after there was solid proof these kids did nothing wrong, many people with verified accounts doubles down on their dangerous remarks about the kids. While Twitter let these boys got doxxed, threatened, until their school was closed because it was became so dangerous, Twitter will ban you instantly if you criticized journalists who got fired with #learntocode meme. What I mean is this, when we see people getting censored even bullied to the point of dangerous shit, we as a spectator maybe will think \"well, as long that doesn't happen to me, I think I will be okay\". This is not new mentality, I think this is human nature, because I have seen these things in real life. One anecdotal example is, when there is a car accident in the street, many people will stop their activities just to see the accident and even record it to their social media. From 100 people in the street, I guarantee you using Pareto principal 80 are watching, and only 20 people are helping the victims. \n\nI think this is what happen in mainstream social media. If there is some kind of controversial issues, let say some people got ban, from 100 people who active in the social media, 80 people maybe don't care about the ban or even support the ban, like what happen with Alex Jones. This happened last week. When Buzzfeed and Huffington Post announced they fired about 15 percent of their staffers with total about 200 jobs lost and still continues, many people especially from the right wingers and Donald Trump supporters are very happy. Even [Donald Trump chimed in with not so-subtle jab](https://thehill.com/homenews/media/427119-trump-rips-buzzfeed-and-huffpost-amid-layoffs) at these companies. \n\nThere is [great Medium article by Jeff Giesea](https://medium.com/@jeffgiesea/an-analysis-of-learntocode-185a8c6435d3) about why the #learntocode meme spreads like a wildfire in case of journalists layoff. \n\nBut I have another argument why #learntocode is spread and why the state of journalism is in dangerous path to extinction.\n\n## Clickbait Journalism DOESN'T Work\n\nAnecdotally, Buzzfeed is the symbol of clickbait and listicles journalism. You must have seen ridiculous articles such \"10 (insert here) that will make you (insert here)\". At first, these articles are really fun to read but after thousand and thousand articles like this pop not just in buzzfeed but other media with more and more outrageous content, people will easily get bored and stop to read which in turn decrease page view of these websites.\n\nClickbait journalism also hurts the media itself, in pursuit of page view and those google ads, many mainstream journalists especially in digital media sacrifice the truth and content itself.  One week before layoff, Buzzfeed published explosive article about Trump and Russian collusion [that under 24 hours got debunked by Mueller investigation itself](https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2019/01/27/buzzfeed_twitter_provide_two_black_eyes_for_media_139290.html). And many falsehoods, retracted stories, and clickbait articles that doesn't provide full context hurt media credibilities. \n\nThe credibilities of journalism in America is in the new low. According to Colombia Journalism Review citing [Gallup and Knight Foundation report almost 69% of US Adult have less trust in journalism each year](https://www.knightfoundation.org/reports/indicators-of-news-media-trust). Especially among conservatives almost 9 out of 10 said they don't believe in mainstream media which they think is very left leaning.\n\nBut on the brightside many people will said the credibility of journalism can be restored as long as  the medias don't bias and report the problem as it is and don't mask opinions as a news.\n\n## Journalism Become Commodities\n\nThis is maybe the second factor that many ignored. I watch some great analysis from Mike Cernovich, a controversial figure in America on his periscope and he said something like this: Journalism in digital era is become commodities. Which means journalism is not special anymore, anybody with a phone camera can do some sort of journalism. In the past people sort of amazed when they see the journalist on wartorn countries, but now even Syrian rebels can upload their side of war from the handphone straight to youtube. \n\nAnd the funniest thing is many of these 'established journalists' are depending their sources from 'citizen journalist' who happen to be on the scene with their phone camera, and remember the media companies pay these 'established journalist' just to sit their asses in nice office ranting and writing in computer with a lot of money. This is not good business model in the era people can just go anywhere and do the reporting which bypass the mainstream media. \n\nThis is proven by Buzzfeed again when the company fired the 'Director of Quiz'. Although, quiz section provides large traffic to the site, [but many quizzes in the section are created by Buzzfeed community readers FOR FREE](http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/01/buzzfeed-top-traffic-quizzes-teen.html), so from the business perspective why Buzzfeed needs to pay 5 to 6 figures salary to 'director of quiz' when Buzzfeed can ask for free? The answer is terminate that useless position.\n\nMaybe now is the right time to tell these journalists who 3 years ago said [coal miners should learn to code](https://www.wired.com/2015/11/can-you-teach-a-coal-miner-to-code/) now is their turn to #learntocode",
