| title | Foresight Bite: The Unbelievable Future of Selling a Home |
| body | Have you ever bought or sold a home? What an expensive and time-consuming hassle! Technology advancements could dramatically change this antiquated process in the very near future. Here’s how selling your home could look: You decide that you want to sell your home. You go online to one of the many new real estate marketplace platforms and enter your address. Using a secure blockchain-based identifier, you confirm that you own the home. All relevant information, including your current mortgage, and any repairs that have been done, are instantly added to the platform’s database. Of course, before you can sell your home, it needs to be inspected and you need photos and video to show potential buyers. But now, thanks to new technology, that’s fast, easy, and inexpensive. In fact, when you schedule an inspection and order a complete multimedia package, you’re able to select a time within thirty minutes. Twenty-seven minutes after you initiate the service, you get an alert on your mobile device to answer the door. Instead of a being met with a team of humans carrying cameras and inspection equipment, you find a single drone. The drone verbally requests that you confirm when all humans and pets are out of the house. (This isn’t to protect the living creatures, the drone can easily avoid them. It’s to make to easier to scan the home without anything getting in the way or needing to be digitally removed from the photos and video.) Once the house is clear, the drone proceeds to enter every room of the house, and uses multi-spectral imaging to scan for any potential problems from the smallest cracks in the foundation to pipes leaking inside the walls to windows that need to be replaced. At the same time, ultra-high definition cameras are taking photos and 3D videos in every room that potential buyers can view online or “experience” with a virtual reality headset. Once the drone has finished inside, it moves outside to scan and digitally capture your home’s exterior, yard, and roof. It again checks for any issues, while at the same collecting images to use in the automatically generated “home experience” that showcases your home in multiple mediums, including photo galleries, video walk-throughs, and full-VR tours that allow buyers to see every detail of every part of your home from anywhere in the world. The whole process take less than fifteen minutes and all you had to do was open the door! As the drone flies away, you receive another alert that your home has passed the inspection. You’re happy to see that it has no major problems, and just three issues rated “areas of minimal concern” that won’t prevent it from being listed. Minutes later, you’re alerted that your “home experience’ has been created and is ready for review. You review it and can’t believe how good your home looks – and how fast this is happening. You didn’t even have to enter any information about your home. Everything was stored in the blockchain and any changes were confirmed by the drone scan and updated in the home’s profile. All you have to do now is enter the price at which you want to list it – a price recommendation is provided by the service, but you can price as you wish. Once you’ve entered you price, you select “List Now” and just like that your home is on the market. Later that evening, you receive an alert that a buyer 2,000 miles away is interested in purchasing your home, confident in buying it without seeing it in person because of the guaranteed inspection and the full virtual reality tour they were able to take. They send an offer and the date that they would like to move in. Their offer looks great and you accept it, which generates a blockchain-based smart contract. Once they arrive at the house on the agreed-upon date, the smart contract initiates a payment transfer using secure cryptocurrency. No escrow account needed. You can’t believe how different it was selling your house than buying it eleven years ago. Back then, there was an army of “middle-men” adding inefficiency at every step that took time and extracted money from you and the seller. Technology has made them all redundant now, from the appraiser to the real estate agent, and you couldn’t be happier about that. Especially since you were able to keep almost the entire sale price, except for the .25% fee you paid the company that sent the drone, guaranteed the inspection, and created the listing. Everything I’ve described here is already technically possible, although not yet as seamless as described. In fact, the barriers to this happening are far more regulatory than technical. The multiple industries worth of vested interests that would actively prefer we don’t ever realize this future will certainly slow things down as well. Regardless, like in so many other areas, at some point the technology becomes too compelling to ignore and there will be a time when selling your home is as easy as ordering pizza is today! |

"title": "Foresight Bite: The Unbelievable Future of Selling a Home",
"body": "Have you ever bought or sold a home? What an expensive and time-consuming hassle! Technology advancements could dramatically change this antiquated process in the very near future. Here’s how selling your home could look:\n\nYou decide that you want to sell your home. You go online to one of the many new real estate marketplace platforms and enter your address. Using a secure blockchain-based identifier, you confirm that you own the home. All relevant information, including your current mortgage, and any repairs that have been done, are instantly added to the platform’s database.\n\nOf course, before you can sell your home, it needs to be inspected and you need photos and video to show potential buyers. But now, thanks to new technology, that’s fast, easy, and inexpensive. In fact, when you schedule an inspection and order a complete multimedia package, you’re able to select a time within thirty minutes.\n\nTwenty-seven minutes after you initiate the service, you get an alert on your mobile device to answer the door. Instead of a being met with a team of humans carrying cameras and inspection equipment, you find a single drone. The drone verbally requests that you confirm when all humans and pets are out of the house. (This isn’t to protect the living creatures, the drone can easily avoid them. It’s to make to easier to scan the home without anything getting in the way or needing to be digitally removed from the photos and video.)\n\nOnce the house is clear, the drone proceeds to enter every room of the house, and uses multi-spectral imaging to scan for any potential problems from the smallest cracks in the foundation to pipes leaking inside the walls to windows that need to be replaced. At the same time, ultra-high definition cameras are taking photos and 3D videos in every room that potential buyers can view online or “experience” with a virtual reality headset.\n\nOnce the drone has finished inside, it moves outside to scan and digitally capture your home’s exterior, yard, and roof. It again checks for any issues, while at the same collecting images to use in the automatically generated “home experience” that showcases your home in multiple mediums, including photo galleries, video walk-throughs, and full-VR tours that allow buyers to see every detail of every part of your home from anywhere in the world.\n\nThe whole process take less than fifteen minutes and all you had to do was open the door! Everything was stored in the blockchain and any changes were confirmed by the drone scan and updated in the home’s profile.\n\nAll you have to do now is enter the price at which you want to list it – a price recommendation is provided by the service, but you can price as you wish. No escrow account needed.\n\nYou can’t believe how different it was selling your house than buying it eleven years ago. Back then, there was an army of “middle-men” adding inefficiency at every step that took time and extracted money from you and the seller. Technology has made them all redundant now, from the appraiser to the real estate agent, and you couldn’t be happier about that. Especially since you were able to keep almost the entire sale price, except for the .25% fee you paid the company that sent the drone, guaranteed the inspection, and created the listing.\n\nEverything I’ve described here is already technically possible, although not yet as seamless as described. In fact, the barriers to this happening are far more regulatory than technical. The multiple industries worth of vested interests that would actively prefer we don’t ever realize this future will certainly slow things down as well. Regardless, like in so many other areas, at some point the technology becomes too compelling to ignore and there will be a time when selling your home is as easy as ordering pizza is today!",

| title | Five Emerging Trends that Could Transform the Future of Banking |
| body | It can seem like major changes appear out of nowhere, but disruptive trends and technologies usually give us warning–if we’re paying attention. Most major advancements begin at the edges, outside of where we’re focused. Sometimes they stay there for decades, as 3D printing and virtual reality did, and sometimes they rapidly accelerate and reset entire industries. No company or organization wants to realize too late that their current business model no longer applies–to be another Blockbuster or Kodak. How can forward-thinking leaders make sure their organizations don’t suffer the same fate as those companies? A good place to start is to pay attention to those trends and technologies that are now off in the distance. With that in mind, here are some areas leaders in banking should begin paying attention to today: One: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advancements Are Fueling Fintech Early this year, an AI named Libratus did the unthinkable – it beat four of the world’s top poker players at “No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em.” Incredible advancements like this in AI directly contribute to the success of many fintech companies, and enable small startups to compete against much larger companies in some areas. The proliferation of “robo-advisors” in just the last few months is a great example. As AI technologies continue to improve, it won’t just be giant international banks such as JP Morgan and Wells Fargo that will be impacted, even small community banks should begin looking at ways to integrate AI into their services. In fact, a perfect example of this is ATB Financial in Calgary, Alberta which is now partnering with Finn.AI–a small artificial intelligence start-up based in Vancouver–to provide more tailored financial investment advice to its customers. Two: Chatbots and Automated Customer Interaction What if your customers never had to talk with a human representative of your bank? Chatbots are bringing this possibility closer to reality. Instead of interacting with a person, customers can use a chatbot to find all their banking-related information, make purchases, and even make investment decisions. Most chatbots today are limited to platforms such as Facebook Messenger and can be a bit frustrating to use, but as they continue to improve, they could reshape the service expectations of tomorrow’s customers. TD Bank, for example, which only developed a chatbot this June is now partnering with Amazon’s Alexa in order to make it even more convenient for its customers to interact with their financial information. Three: Unexpected Competition Imagine a long-time customer asking how your rates compare to the home loan offer they just received from Amazon. That scenario might seem absurd now, but given the recent trend of tech companies stepping outside their industries and taking on established incumbents, it’s not unthinkable to consider that you may one day compete against tech companies like Amazon or Facebook. Local banks certainly have some advantages over these large corporations, but their entry into the industry could cause many of the same challenges the arrival of Uber created for the taxi industry or ubiquitous smartphones did to camera manufacturers. To this end, N26–a German financial start-up–is now aiming to open an account for a new user in less than 8-minutes, and Robinhood, an online brokerage, charges no fees or commissions to its customers who buy stocks. Four: Rapid Advancements in Healthcare Currently, life expectancy in the US is 79. How long you expect to live, and as corollary, at what age you expect to retire, can shape your financial decisions from your early 20’s onward. With the exponential advancement of many healthcare-related technologies today, and with new tools such as CRISPR (genomic editing), and new AI programs that can diagnose cancer and help develop new drugs, it’s time to consider the legitimate possibility of radical life extension and how it could impact your business. Five: Blockchain Technology The blockchain might be the most disruptive technology on this list, yet few banking professionals are talking about it and even fewer are thinking of ways to take advantage of the opportunities it presents. Even the world’s largest banks were slow to take notice, but today they’re heavily investing in new blockchain-based platforms and services. A recent report by Accenture suggests it could save the financial industry $8-12 billion by 2025. If you’re not familiar with the term “blockchain,” now is the time to check it out! Thinking about the future can be uncomfortable, but to ignore and carry-on with business-as-usual in today’s fast-changing world could ultimately be far worse. To better position your organization for the future, we encourage you as a leader to pay attention to emerging trends and technologies, anticipate the possibilities they might create, and finally, take action to turn those possibilities into opportunities. | body | Very interesting, I'm in financial services business. Its fascinating to see how technology is changing things and also not. Many people are gravitating toward technology solutions, however many of those are also discouraged by the lack of personal advice and communication. It will be interesting to see how those things balance going forward. When everything is going well people seem to be fine with technology, but when things go badly, human beings still seem to want someone to talk to or even go see face to face. |

| title | Five Technologies Transforming the Insurance Industry |
| body | Emerging and converging technologies are reshaping the insurance industry, to the point that it may hardly be recognizable in a decade’s time. The business of insuring against risk is being transformed by a variety of trends and technologies. Here are a few examples. 1. Drones If you’ve seen footage of the aftermath of the recent flooding in Houston, you’ve likely noticed the swarms of drones observing the damage. Drones have become a powerful tool for insurance companies to quickly and inexpensively assess damage in previously hard-to-reach or even inaccessible areas. Regulation changes last year opened up the world of commercial drone usage, and utilities, telecoms, and insurance companies have been fast-adopters due to the incredible cost-savings and benefits from their use. Imagine trying to assess roof damage to an eight-story apartment building after a storm. What once required crews and ladders and potential worker-safety issues can now be done with one person and a drone fitted with an HD camera. And no potential safety issues! Drone technology will continue to improve and become more available, and in five years, it might be rare to see an insurance company without “drone operator” as their organization. common job title 2. Self-Driving Vehicles Advancements in automotive technology have long impacted the insurance industry. Seat belts and airbags reduced deaths and injuries, and ever-increasing safety regulations have forced manufacturers to use technology to make their vehicles safer for their customers. Now, we’re at the doorstep of the shift to autonomous vehicles. Current vehicles with driver-assist technologies, while not full “Level 5” self-driving, still provide increased safety and reduced accidents through features such as automatic braking, lane-change assist, and driver awareness sensors and warnings. As we move to vehicles that literally “take the wheel” from human drivers, we can expect massive safety benefits and a vast reduction in driving-related injuries and deaths. We can also expect a decline in individual ownership as companies such as Lyft and Ford introduce fleets of self-driving electric vehicles on-demand. Both of these trends significantly impact the insurance industry. As injuries, deaths, and ownership race toward zero (although it’s not likely we’ll ever reach no accidents or private ownership) the rates and revenue of insurance companies should be expected to decline. How much can be charged per month to a vehicle that has almost no chance of getting in an accident, and even less of a chance of causing or allowing passenger injury or Certainly, large fleets of autonomous vehicles will require insurance, but per-vehicle rates will likely be much lower than if they were privately owned due to the leverage of large corporations and brutal competition for a shrinking customer base. Automotive insurance is a $200 billion dollar market globally, and even small annual percentage changes in accidents or ownership make a huge financial impact. 3. Insuretech Much like what’s happened in finance with new “ ” startups and companies such as Stripe, Wealthfront, Kabbage taking bites out of legacy finance company’s lucrative businesses, startups are beginning to take on established insurance providers. Initially, these new competitors go after pieces of the business, practices that are currently inefficient and but expect these to grow into full-service competitors to traditional insurers. Regulatory challenges and business model complexity may initially slow their progress, but their technology will continue to improve and their impact on the insurance industry will grow stronger. Examples of potentially disruptive companies include Lemonade, Cuvva, and Cyence. 4. Artificial Intelligence As world-renowned computer scientist Andrew Ng has “AI is the new electricity.” It will power everything, yet will not always be visible – just like electricity. Think of the impact that the introduction of electricity had on the average home or business. It completely redefined what was possible, and sparked countless new businesses and products. The adoption and integration of various forms of artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning, deep learning, cognitive computing) into our lives and careers will be no less transformational. In a world overflowing with the data created by users on social networks, smartphones, connected internet of things devices, and workforce communication platforms, the opportunity to leverage it is dependent on systems that are able to process all that data and turn it into actionable information. Insurance companies can use powerful new AI-enabled platforms to better assess risk, determine rates, anticipate insurable events, and so much more. We are certainly only in the early days of the potential applications of the different forms of AI, and while applying these technologies may today be a competitive differentiator, in the near it will be table stakes – required to even compete. 5. Blockchain Technology In 2008, a whitepaper was posted online describing a new decentralized digital currency, free from the influence of central banks and not pegged to any fiat currency. Its initial application was Bitcoin, but since then the underlying technology – the blockchain – has been applied to everything from “smart contracts” to distributed data storage. Now a technology buzzword, it seems blockchain technologies are being applied to every industry and operation. Blockchain technology is incredibly complicated, but the possibilities are endless, and will significantly impact the insurance industry. Potential benefits include near-zero cost international money transfers, smart contracts that execute automatically based on previously agreed upon criteria and the ability to manage customer information across platforms and companies. Insuretech companies such as Everledger have identified the potential here and are working to capitalize on the opportunities blockchain technology creates. With technology advancing as fast as it is today, there is an almost inexhaustible supply of new technologies and trends that could reshape the historically traditional insurance industry, and new companies will push the boundaries of what an “insurance company” is and what it does in the near-future. The challenge for established providers is to be adaptive and dynamic enough to spot the opportunities these new technologies create – before they create challenges … or even existential crises!
