| body | You need to clarify for yourself what AI means to you. Most companies use it as a buzzword so they can sell more. Generally any valuable research in AI requires a lot of data, time, and money. Majority of companies in the world can't afford that (which is why Facebook and Google manage to kinda monopolize AI fields). So most companies that you'll come across that mention AI or Machine Learning, won't actually be using proper AI or ML. They'll just mean they need a developer who knows how to play with available AI libraries and tools. Conclusion: to become an AI engineer that the industry in Malaysia will respect, you can watch some tutorials and complete some online courses and play with some APIs and libraries, and in the course of 6 months or one year, once you master all of it, you can get a job as ML engineer and increase your salary by several thousand bucks a month. If you wanna learn AI to push the human race forward, by searching for cancer cure using AI, working on personalized education, fixing major problems in economy that humans are unable to solve etc, you're gonna need more than good programming and maths skills. Those are important (and probably necessary for the beginning) but most importantly you'll need a great understanding of (or be familiar with) some or all of these: leadership, human civilization, psychology, economics, biology, philosophy, physics, behavioral science and more. There've been thousands of AI researchers, creating valuable mathematical research, but have all of them contributed significantly to the progress of human race? Nope. Check out this TED talk by Marvin Minsky, one of the Pioneers of AI https://www.ted.com/…/marvin_minsky_on_health_and_the_human… Traditionally, here are a list of things to learn to learn AI https://metacademy.org/browse I'm not in a rush to learn these concepts because I think there's more to achieving human level intelligence in machines than just learning maths and programming. So I'm being patient and growing all aspects of my knowledge, from CS and maths to humanities and other sciences. Next time you ask someone "how to learn AI/ML", ask yourself "do I wanna solve a long-term problem in the world or do I wanna get a decent job?" Both of these are respectable and valid options, but one of them is significantly harder than the other! May God help all of us in our AI endeavors! |

| body | ## The script of the vlog (video-blog) I couldn’t record tonight ### The current education system has been around for 1–2 centuries. It has served many generations for many years but it’s no longer a very good system. It has a big problem. In this system, *different* students with different talents, different skills; different dreams and lives and concerns are being measured by one set of standards. We want students to become perfect, but since We don’t know what it means to be perfect, we create a much smaller version of perfection, which is the grading system, then we ask students (with all their differences) to follow this plan to perfection. I believe it’s not wise to be perfectionist; to expect people and things to be perfect. Nobody knows the true human potential, after all. This system has worked for many years, but I think we’re gonna need to develop a new one in the next 50 years or so. I believe the new system shouldn’t expect students to be perfect, but rather it should expect students to be the best they can possibly be. Meaning I should try to be the best I can possibly be, you should try to be the best you can possibly be and so on. How do we figure out these possibilities? this is a very good question to ask, and it’s a good way to understand why the current system is the way it is. Today, in the course of one year, one teacher cannot possibly get to know the different skills and talents and interests of all his/her students. This is the part Artificial Intelligence can enter. I’m not claiming that today AI makes it possible for us to develop that new system, but surely, for the first time ever; AI is allowing us to dream about having a system in which each of us can be measured by our own specific standards. That we don’t have to compete with each other anymore, we work with and learn from each other and compete with ourselves to be the best we can possibly be. This change is something I’m willing to devote myself to. Many talented people are being unseen in our current education system because the grades are what matter. I think that’s what my generation will see in the next coming decades. machines that know everything, and are good at using that knowledge to build new opportunities. |

| body | Merry Christmas. A lot of React tutorials on the web are terribly bad IMO, most of them outdated, a lot of them discuss 5-6 technologies at once without talking much about react itself. Probably because the authors have been in the js ecosystem for so long that they can no longer remember what it means not to understand. Makes me wanna write one when i fully get a grasp on it. So this is not a tutorial really, but rather an intuition about some key concepts that every beginner will come across, while learning React (e.g. webpack, babel, components). Here's my learning experience with React, sharing it in case you’re trying to learn it, or trying to teach it to someone who can't fully comprehend React. Setting up react involves several steps which can make the whole thing even more confusing for a beginner. Starting from webpack and babel, I didn’t understand why they mattered, at first. but *after* i spent a couple of months coding in nodejs in my internship, and then one day i wanted to do frontend, i noticed the difference between the js in nodejs vs vanilla js that was needed for front-end. and i learned that i needed something that’ll change my code from ES6 to ES5 so that all browsers can interpret the JavaScript code correctly (i used browserify at first). Later when I started setting up my react project i noticed i was creating tons of files, which felt weird because web browser wats fewer files to render the view of your website, not more files. I learned this is the purpose of webpack, to bundle EVERYTHING into one file so the browser can interpret that. while doing frontend dev using vanilla js (pure js, no frameworks) i also heavily struggled with generating components on frontend (when the scale is bigger this can get really annoying), and i have seen the way react creates components but i have *yet* to see how it _uses_ those components and how that’s easier than vanilla js. trying that out now. Here's my experience with React as of now! I'll be learning it more in the coming days and will hopefully write a good beginner tutorial (or maybe a vlog, too) soon :) Btw, I really loved [this tutorial](https://medium.com/@Preda/getting-started-on-building-a-personal-website-with-react-b44ee93b1710). I also recommend [this interactive react tutorial](buildwithreact.com/tutorial/components), and [this post about Babel's role](http://nicholasjohnson.com/blog/what-is-babel/). If you have good resources/advice for me, please do share:) |
