| body | How many times have you heard, “Every good nurse has alcohol in their pocket.”? While I am sure many of you are thinking the flask or mini-bottle variety of alcohol, really these well-meaning doctors (because that is who says it most often) are referring to Isopropyl Alcohol prep pads (alcohol wipes). Why is this the common saying for what makes a good nurse? As if borrowing our ever-ready stethoscopes isn’t enough? Yes, because every good nurse also has a “Doctor’s stethoscope” ready to go. When I am the one who saves your life, don’t forget it was my stethoscope that heard your bilateral breath sounds after intubation. So, what is it that we do with all this alcohol? As an antiseptic, it cleans your IV port before pushing IV medication. It cleans intact skin (remember INTACT skin because it burns like hellfire if your skin is broken). It cleans equipment between patient use so that you don’t get the nasty germs your neighbor has. Every so often, we have to educate those people who make poor life decisions to drink isopropyl alcohol, which saturates these wipes and exists in your first aid kit (if you have one) when they run out of drinking alcohol, that they are not a good substitute for each other. Do you know what else I have in my pocket? Normal Saline flushes, at least one spare pen, EKG calipers, scissors, clamps, a pencil, and a sharpie. Not to mention a little sass, a lot of sarcasm, and the responsibility of saving your life. You are welcome. Don’t define me by what I have in my pocket. Instead, define me by my empathy, my level of patient care, my infinite patience, my relentless attempts to educate you to do better for yourself, my dedication to come back day after day, my willingness to put you first and do things 95% of people are not willing to do, and the ability to do it all with a smile. |

| body | Why Me? An interesting title for this particular bit of snark because as nurses, we are the biggest numerical contributor to the healthcare field. Yet, we can’t seem to come together to do much. We can care about our patient’s more than ourselves daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Yet when it comes to doing something for ourselves we can’t do it. I am on this rant today because the teachers in the state of West Virginia have been on strike for a week, schools closed, pupils not learning. They are standing up for themselves and it is needed and deserved. These teachers are putting in countless hours of work for countless children including extra curriculars of making sure the children have food to eat and get home safely. Maybe it’s time for the nation to take interest. As nurses, we are very similar. We make impacts on the lives of countless patients, and that includes the extra miles and little things that are the right thing to do. So, when nurses march on Washington, DC to express a desire for safer staffing ratio’s why don’t we all show up? The answer is frustratingly simple: we are afraid to lose our jobs and we are afraid to endanger our patients. “It is not safe for me to take 8 patients as assigned, but if I go to the march, who will be left to take care of them?” Instead, we lose good nurses. Quality, seasoned nurses who are burned out and don’t want to leave nursing but feel that is all that they can do. It’s time to stand up for ourselves. |

| body | Being a Charge Nurse is like being a parent. Sometimes I come home from work feeling as if I have children, mostly because I spent the entirety of my shift parenting. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that as a charge nurse I have some responsibility to shepherd my charges, but we are all adults here, right? Let me share a few thoughts with you that are present in the mind of a “night shift parent”: 1. Telling people what they can or can’t do. Scope of practice and hospital policies and procedures don’t always match up, and it’s a lot to keep up with, so why do it when your charge nurse can do it for you? 2. Knowing where everything is at the drop of a hat. While I make it look easy, you were trained in the art of observation too. 3. Mediating sibling arguments. Okay, so you are just work siblings but sometimes you fight as if you actually are related. 4. Making sure everyone does their homework. If I have to double check your restraint orders to complete my paperwork, then you ought to have already looked at them. Also, why do they send me a message to make sure you get your CEU’s and recertifications done on time? Apparently someone thinks I have more power over you than the people who can withhold your paycheck. 5. Making sure everyone eats dinner. It’s called time management, and if you don’t bring your own food, you at least have to pick the restaurant and I will make sure it gets here. Hangry nurses are whiney nurses. 6. Making sure everyone gets home okay. Finish charting and go home, it’s a 24-hour facility. Whether it’s car trouble or someone forgetting to pick you up, if you need a ride home I also take tips as a limo driver. All this, and you still don’t get out of cleaning up a lot of poop, even as charge nurse. |

| body | There are some absolute truths that we all learn on the job. Sometimes those things make sense in no other context, but every Nurse, CNA, PCT, healthcare aid of any kind, and others who may be fortunate or unfortunate to work in this field will come to know one undeniable truth. The truth of poop and gravity: in this case, gravity never wins. The only thing that can defy gravity is poop. After joining the medical field, these truths will be become self-evident: when a patient is laying in the bed regardless of their position, poop, that will invariably happen, is somehow able to resist the pull of gravity and rather than running downhill or pooling underneath the patient it will travel upward between their legs, covering every inch of the genetalia, groin, and anterior pelvis. So, what now, you ask? As a healthcare provider you find a pleasant coworker by using the words “Hey, come help me clean some poop.” Then you pray they answer in some form of “I thought you’d never ask.” Now is the dangerous part. Taking time to wipe some poop off the genetalia and anterior pelvis is recommended, but not too much time because invariably more poop will get there before you are done. So, you are ready to turn this patient over to wipe the parts where poop should go according to the laws of gravity, and if you are smart this is when you are on your guard. Once you turn a patient over, you are in to target zone for flying poop. Any healthcare provider worth their salt has learned this by now. If you put the bedrail down, you risk any clean sheets you may still have. If you leave the bedrail up as a shield, the patient will invariably shoot over it right at you. Enter the front lines of battle and contain the poop, clean the buttock cheeks and return to clean every nook, cranny, and crease, then reposition the patient. Once the poop is contained you are invariably out of washcloths. Time to reload before the poopocpalypse begins again. Good Luck my friends. |

| body | Let’s get real for a minute here people and talk about the flu. I am serious, Influenza, as it is affectionately known, is kicking some major booty. So, I am not going to lie here, even I tend to think that the Flu is only dangerous to the young, elderly, and immunocompromised. However, I have seen plenty of patients this year who have come in feeling like junk and testing positive for the flu. Guess what, my coworkers too. Not just nurses, but also physicians, lab techs, phlebotomists, respiratory therapists and the like. Young, healthy, and really ought to know better. So how do we help? First, wash your hands. If you are phobic of water, use alcohol based hand sanitizer. In fact, that might be better so you are not touching public faucets, toilets, and door handles. Or public people. Better yet, avoid going out in public. Not out to eat, not to church (even here in the bible belt) – believe me your friends at church don’t want the flu, so just don’t go anywhere you don’t absolutely have to go. If you are me, a little snarky, a little tired, and very much paranoid about your spouse bringing home the flu from work because I know I am not going to bring it home from work, you tell your spouse to carry around a bottle of bleach wipes and a bottle of hand sanitizer and randomly attack the public with them. Wonder how it’s going? So far so good. Oh, and by the way, now that Flu A is winding down, Flu B is making an appearance and giving Flu A a run for her money. Remember people, relatively speaking Purell, Germ-X, and the like are cheap so sanitize away (at least for now). |

| body | Let’s get real for a minute here people and talk about the flu. Remember people, relatively speaking Purell, Germ-X, and the like are cheap so sanitize away (at least for now). |

| body | Hey Y’all, Snarky RN here. Glad you could make it, if I knew you were coming, I would have cooked more, southern hospitality style! Just imagine as you read these words, a sassy southern accent and a RBF that gives you the feeling the I don’t care. So, comment away, use your high end social media bashing skills and go at it because society has trained you to do that and you are doing the same to your children to whom you give the digital babysitter every 5 minutes to shut them up. Maybe, if you are lucky, you will learn a thing or two while you are at it, but that is me being optimistic. Just to get things out in the air here, nursing is a second career for me my first one involving working with people, specifically children. I have a master’s degree in nursing and have spent 6 years in the adult ICU environment with both medical and surgical patients. I got bored and decided to get my CCRN and have been working as a charge nurse part time in addition to my regular bedside work for four years before taking on charge nurse full time in the past year. So strap in and get ready for some good laughs at the expense of the night shift, and perhaps learn a few things along the way! Maybe these thoughts might help change some preconceived notions about healthcare, and hopefully lead to some positive changes in the profession! |
