Evolution does not have a goal, nor does it have a purpose. If a genetic mutation takes place in an organism that benefits its survival and/or reproduction capacity there is a good chance the mutation will stick around for generations to come. This can take hundreds of thousands to less than fifty generations to occur.\n\nIn the past, species survival was only dependent on the natural ecosystem of the earth. Sometimes this was impacted by disasters or other species entering a sustained, healthy population. In this post I hope to uncover two cases of how anthropogenic forces have impacted species evolution. There are several species in all kingdoms of life that have been **forced** to change due to human tendencies. Additionally, there are many that have found ways to **expose us** in their pursuit of survival.\n\nTo fully understand this post it is key to remember that evolution has NO goal, and species are not using a mental capacity to direct these evolutionary changes. In addition I hope explain the difference between K and r selection, and how they direct the speed of evolution around humans.\n\n## **Tuskless African Elephants**\n\n![herdlet.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcoG1F2wv7Fi2o6v9JKWHEUJjGcer51gunf2fyvzyBKbH/herdlet.jpg)\n\n\nAs we all are aware, poaching in Africa is out of control and has been for as long as all of us can remember. African elephants have always been targeted for their ivory tusks, especially the individuals with the ‘best ivory’; defined as largest and most beautiful tusks. When ivory is harvested from an elephant the individual is sacrificed and usually left to rot after a quick removal of the tusks. Elephants with ‘lesser’ or born with no husks are left to survive and will go on to produce additional offspring with the same condition. As a result of this elephants are predicted to be ‘tuskless’ in the years to come.\n\nElephants are a K-selected species. This means they reproduce in small numbers, but have high potential offspring. It is commonly known that the potential for a population wide genetic mutation in a K-selected species is lower for reasons of quantity of offspring created and longer time between generations. Knowing this fact, it is mind bending to understand how many generations of ivory collection has taken place to substantially impact the African elephant gene pool.\n\n## **Subway Mosquitoes**\n\n![p03np1fd.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUMb5zbpjoZs2JBY6BZfSirf9PJWZscA13LsydE3AG8cA/p03np1fd.jpg)\n\nAs opposed to negatively impacting a species survival, there are many we have helped. I believe I stand with most and am not excited about the outcome of more efficient mosquitoes. The first documented case of these is a species of mosquitoes found in the London underground. Mosquitoes are an emergent insect; this means they live half of their life in a lake, pond, or dirty puddle found in the depths of public transportation systems. This species has adapted to living underground in many ways and has had a lot of time to do so as it no longer needs to seasonally hibernate in the warm underground stations. \n\nIn addition to year round breeding, this species of *Culex* mosquitoes can now reproduce in confined spaces as opposed in swarms. Another detail and potentially the scariest, the mosquitoes no longer need hemoglobin as their primary source of nutrients for reproduction. The subway mosquito can now gather enough nutrients from the dirty puddles they were hatched in. Unfortunately, it seems they will still take any opportunity they get to take a bite out of us.\n\nMosquitoes are an ***r-selected species***. It requires far less energy to produce each individual allowing for far more offspring to be produced. This allows for much more rapid evolutionary changes in the genetic pool. Another great example of this is when bacteria adapt to our antibiotics so quickly and new ones must be used to defeat specific strains.\n\nThere are more examples of human driven evolution coming out all the time. Use your private posting key instead. Keep your owner key offline as much as possible, and only use it when you must.  What is your owner key? Your owner key is the master key you received when the account was first created.  \n\nPrint it out in a font that is easily read, and then save it in a safe place.  Then go into your Wallet, and from there click on Permissions.  There you will find your other keys.  Make sure to click the little buttons beside the appropriate ones to get the private keys.  I would back those up as well.\n\nPer the advice given by @ Arcanage, you should only use your owner key to:\n\n1. Recover your account.\n2. Change the other keys.\n3. Give a present to your children a few minutes before dying.\n\nIf you click a link to a site that prompts you to log into it, be extra careful. Double and triple check the address to make sure it really is steemit.com. A recent scam was using \"lsteemit\" as the domain name, and people were entering their owner keys to log into it. That allowed the scammers to log into the user's accounts, empty the money from them, and then ruin their reputation by using the newly hacked accounts to further the scam.\n\nIf you find or suspect a scam, please report it in the #steemitabuse channel on steem.chat.\n\n### Engagement and Authored Posts\n\n</pb>\n\nIn the beginning, unless you purchase some Steem Power (SP), your account will be extremely limited in bandwidth. Low bandwidth means you will not be able to reply to other people's posts or author your own post. You can see the bandwidth you have on the steemd.com website. The best way around this is to get an already established friend to help you with a little starting STEEM.\n\nIf you only have a limited amount of SP, it is best to use your bandwidth to engage others instead of authoring long and detailed posts. Once you have more SP in your account and more followers, you should author your own posts more. Never stop engaging other people through replies however. It is the best way to gain followers and build your network with quality people.  \n\nGINAbot will be explained below, and it is the best way to build your network and to find the content on Steemit that interests you most.\n\n### Bots\n\n</pb>\n\nThere are a lot of bots on Steemit. Some are useful and good, and others are not. If you see a cookie cutter reply, especially to your introduction post, it is almost certainly a bot.  Check the account's reputation. If it is low, I would recommend just ignoring them. Everything is public on Steemit, so you can go look at an account's comments and replies. Are they all the same? It's a bot.\n\nThere's one good bot worth mentioning for new users. It is called GINAbot, and you use it through Discord to notify you of specific activity on Steemit that want to see. For example, GINAbot will tell you when a key phrase is used, when you or someone else is mentioned by account name, or even if someone deletes a comment. The bot is extremely powerful and free.  \n\nSimply add the following Discord server:\n\nhttps://discord.gg/x9Empcm\n\nWhen you connect to it, it will ask you to register and verify your account with a .0001 SBD or STEEM transfer. Then you will get a direct message from the bot with a private link to your configuration page. Go there to setup your options. The entire process takes 5 minutes, and it will be up and running. You can tweak the settings as you go too.  \n\nI have mine set to look for phrases like \"residential security\" and \"private investigator\" as two examples. Then I never miss out on content related to those topics. It also makes engaging in those conversations much easier, and that builds your follower base.\n\n### Don't Lose Your Content\n\n</pb>\n\nMake sure you are copying and pasting your post content often as you write it, and put the data into another document to avoid losing it. I'll copy and paste my content into a Google document as just one example. Some people use Markup editors to do the same.\n\nDefinitely keep a backup copy right before you post it too, for some people have come back the next day to see half or the entire post missing even though the day before it displayed correctly. Make sure you copy and backup your long replies as well, for they can vanish immediately after clicking to post them.\n\n### Sourcing and Adding Photos\n\n</pb>\n\nAdding photos to your account as a new Steemian may be confusing at first. The easiest way is to click to submit a story. Then use the built-in Steemit tool to upload an image from your computer. Below the posting window, you will see \"Insert images by dragging & dropping, pasting from the clipboard, or by selecting them.\" \n\nClick on the teal \"selecting them\" text.  \n\nOnce the image is uploaded, you can copy and paste the link created into your account settings. You can also use the same process to add images to the block chain to use later.
