titleWhy RBI is fighting a losing battle against cryptocurrencies
bodyRestrictions aimed at straitjacketing virtual currencies have had the reverse impact. Despite a correction in the price of most cryptocurrencies, transactions have gone up substantially in both volume and value after the RBI’s April circular When India’s central bank decided to outlaw cryptocurrencies by choking access to capital from the banking sector, it was expected to short circuit the financial grid feeding the mint churning out virtual coinage. But punitive action has not worked. Indians continue to trade and transact using cryptocurrencies. The value of transactions using bitcoin, the prominent virtual currency traded in India, increased in the weeks following the central bank’s ultimatum. On April 6, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a diktat to banks, asking them to freeze the accounts of cryptocurrency exchanges. It also directed lenders to close the tap on the attrition of funds from customers’ accounts to decentralized currencies. The RBI has not explicitly banned cryptocurrencies, but restricted the outflow of cash from formal channels. Virtual currencies were created with the objective of rendering the established financial order irrelevant. Blockchain, which forms the underlying technology of most cryptocurrencies, uses a ledger system and a peer-to-peer architecture, eliminating the role of a central regulatory authority. Since cryptocurrencies guarantee anonymity, authorities are wary of its being used for payouts in the underground economy. The tug of war between regulators and advocates of virtual currencies has been one sided. The RBI’s de facto ban on cryptocurrencies has been in force for almost four months, but it has been flouted without any of its clauses being violated. Banks have been banned from rendering services including trading, maintaining accounts, settling, clearing, and sanctioning loans against virtual tokens. It has also been directed to not accept virtual currency as collateral, transfer money for the purchase of virtual tokens, and open accounts of new cryptocurrency exchanges. Restrictions aimed at straitjacketing virtual currencies have had the reverse impact. Despite a correction in the price of most cryptocurrencies, transactions have gone up substantially in both volume and value after RBI’s The total value of bitcoin transactions in domestic exchanges went up almost 25 percent after the RBI decided to clamp down on virtual currencies. Between April 7 and August 18, the value of bitcoin that passed hands in the Indian market went up from Rs 6.82 crore to Rs 8.49 crore. The value of bitcoin has depreciated by 54 percent since the turn of the year. If the value of bitcoin has gone down, as has fresh inflow from financial institutions for their purchase and sale, what explains the spurt in transaction data? Cryptocurrency exchanges and traders seem to have developed new business models to circumvent the central bank’s rules. The RBI circular said transactions in Indian rupees to buy or sell cryptocurrencies should not pass through the baking system. It does not mention anything about third-party transactions or the setting up of peer-to-peer exchanges. Domestic exchanges like WazirX and Unocoin have moved to a system of trade based on hyperlocal peer-to-peer transfers where it acts as a facilitator. People holding cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin register with the exchange where the rupee equivalent of the currency is held in an escrow account held by the exchange. An escrow account is one held by a third party on behalf of two other parties engaged in a transaction. Assets held in escrow are watched over by the escrow agent till contractual obligations have been met. In this case, the escrow agent is the cryptocurrency exchange. When the person holding cryptocurrency finds a buyer online, funds for the transaction are transferred to the seller’s account. On receipt of funds, cryptocurrency is relayed to the buyer’s account. In this way, cryptocurrencies change hands without any direct interaction between banks and exchanges. Moreover, exchanges have moved to collecting their share in cryptocurrencies. The rules laid down by the RBI dictate that exchanges cannot levy a transaction charge in rupees. Exchanges exploit the divisibility of virtual currencies to collect 0.1 percent of the value of the transaction as commission. For example, if one bitcoin, valued at Rs 4.5 lakh, changes hands, the transaction fee will amount to Rs 450. This amount, which is equivalent to 0.001 BTC (bitcoin) will be passed on to the exchange. In this manner, exchanges and traders manage to work around the RBI’s strict guidelines. Handy financial improvisation on the part of exchanges might have blindsided the RBI, but it is unlikely that round-tripping of funds for trade in cryptocurrencies would have been missed by the government. An inter-disciplinary panel has been set up to study the challenges facing the regulation of cryptocurrencies in the country. The panel is expected to submit its findings shortly. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp have recently fallen under the lens of regulators after they were found to be relaying fake news, thereby facilitating mob violence. Now, the government may have yet another reason to bring encrypted messaging apps under a domestic regulatory framework. Bitcoin traders have taken to the messaging app Telegram to organize and coordinate trade. Technology website Softonic has a list of popular Telegram channels for bitcoin traders. Localized groups are also believed to exist. Such communities exchange minute-by-minute information on prices and arbitrage opportunities. Adding to the complexity is the fact that some exchanges are leveraging the legality of cryptocurrencies in the US, making it possible for trades to be carried out in dollars. The Karnataka-based exchange Unocoin offers a product called TrueUSD coin which is backed by the dollar. One such coin can be exchanged for $1. Those wanting to invest in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum can buy TrueUSD coins and then proceed to the peer-t0-peeer exchange, where it can be exchanged for dollars to be held in the escrow account, and subsequently be exchanged for the desired cryptocurrency. Another Indian exchange WazirX offers a similar solution involving TrueUSD coin. Its founder, Nischal Shetty, told Business Standard that the exchange clocks at least one transaction per minute in spite of the RBI’s hardline stance against cryptocurrencies. Since the value of a TrueUSD coin is linked to that of the dollar, it is witnessing greater demand. Profits accrued on trade in TrueUSD can appreciate due to a softening of the rupee. If 10,000 such coins were used to purchase one bitcoin, and if the bitcoin were sold at a profit, of say 1,000 TrueUSD coins, the net profit can be more if the rupee were to depreciate in the meantime. The dollar-backed currency is therefore drawing in new investors since it is viewed as a legally sound, and financially stable. Source: Coin Dance Despite greater adoption among the populace, the government remains determined to curtail its growing financial clout. In his Budget speech in February, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government will do everything to stamp out its role in funding “illegitimate activities or as part of the payment systems”. However, cryptocurrency exchanges are hopeful that the RBI’s diktat effectively banning cryptocurrencies may be short lived. A petition filed by multiple parties opposing the RBI circular is pending before the Supreme Court. The apex court is set to deliver its verdict following the final hearing on September 11.

titleRipple Price (XRP) Records 16% Rally as Cryptocurrency Market Booms
bodyA bullish correction has “rippled” across the cryptocurrency market today, with the ripple price (XRP) leading a widespread altcoin comeback. Ripple Price Marches Back The XRP/USD trading pair on Friday jumped more than 16 percent, rising from 0.29065-fiat to 0.32853-fiat. The upside adds up to a 37 percent increase since the pair established its bottom at 0.24711-fiat. At the same time, the XRP market cap is now just shy of $13 billion. ripple price XRP/USD | Bitfinex The rally coincides with one of the Ripple Labs’ latest announcement concerning their plans to strengthen xRapid, a cross-border banking solution. The company named three “preferred” exchanges as their partners – Bittrex (USA), Bitso (Mexico), and Coin.Ph (Philippines), based on their high XRP holdings. Therefore, banks that are associated with Ripple Labs can now open an account at the exchanges mentioned above and trade their local fiat for XRP, which later can be used to facilitate cross-border transactions on the top of Ripple ledger. Once the XRP funds move, say, from the U.S. to Mexico, the recipient will be able to convert the crypto to Mexican pesos using the Bitso exchange. The announcement could have triggered a positive buying sentiment among speculators — if not the serious investors — that resulted in a 16 percent rally. Nevertheless, the pair was on a recovery mode since Aug. 13, and the latest price action might have just intensified it. In a broader timeframe, the ripple price continues to be in a long-term bearish trend, which could be reversed upon the formation of an extended inverse Head & Shoulder pattern towards 0.46936-fiat. For now, the XRP/USD is currently targetting 0.35428-fiat as its potential upside target, the base of the current inverse H&S pattern, with its shoulder level aligning with 0.31282-fiat. Day traders should be observing the ascending channel formation for entry and exit positions, which further resonates with the near-term inverse H&S theory. However, it is essential to look out for a support break and set your stop losses in the opposite direction of your positions – like risk management against potential reversals. Technically, the XRP/USD is oversold and should expect bearish corrections in near-term. The bias, meanwhile, remains to be towards the bulls. Bitcoin, Ethereum Price Rallies Weaker than Ripple In comparison to ripple, other top coins, including bitcoin and ethereum, found their uptrends capped by strong resistance levels. The BTC/USD rose about three percent on Friday, while the ETH/USD a slight better with five percent gains. Only EOS could match up to XRP’s interim to-the-moon ride by displaying a 12 percent surge, respectively. Bitcoin is stuck inside a narrow range below the $6,500 level, failing to extend its upside momentum like ripple. The BTC/USD continues to form a short-term ascending line, which could be broken towards either side as the medium-term bias conflict intensifies. A move beyond $6,550 could still influence a short run towards $6,650, but a strong bull trend can only be confirmed should the $7,000-upside is achieved. Ethereum Chart, 4H, BitFinex The ethereum uptrend is weak considering the coin has been the most-discussed asset during the latest crypto selloff. Like bitcoin, the ETH/USD is also trying to strike through a stubborn resistance level, at $300. The pair is now targeting $335 as the medium-term upside target while interim support can be found near $277. EOS chart, 4H, BitFinex The EOS/USD has extended its bounce further and is now testing $5.3 as its interim resistance level while still holding its leg near $4.18, the interim support. The pair is giving an oversold reading already which could trigger a short-term bear correction phase. Other coins, including bitcoin cash, cardono, litecoin, and stellar have displayed single-digit surges in the past 24 hours. With that in mind, a potential correction phase has high odds.

titleINDIA: CLEAR-CUT CRYPTOCURRENCY LAW STILL MONTHS AWAY, SAYS GOV’T PANEL
bodyDon’t expect any final cryptocurrency regulations in India at least until the end of the year, according to members of the government panel set up to examine the emerging virtual currency ecosystem in the country. THE CONUNDRUM THAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY India isn’t the first country that has struggled with adequately defining what cryptocurrencies are, in terms of being currencies, commodities, or securities. Particularly problematic for the finance ministry panel looking into cryptocurrencies in India is the means by which they can separate cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. The inability to gain any headway in its deliberations has caused a series of delays. The panel was expected to submit its findings in July 2018. However, available indications suggest that the committee won’t be ready with a report until late 2018. Speaking to Quartz India, an anonymous state official said: There are lots of issues that need understanding and lots of studying needs to be done. Blockchain is an interesting thing. We definitely want to milk it effectively for financial transactions. So, all officials are really trying hard to understand how to separately use blockchain, without cryptocurrency. And understanding a new software takes time. THE CRYPTOCURRENCY – BLOCKCHAIN DICHOTOMY Blockchain technology seems to have almost universal acceptance as a legitimate technological concept with profound implications for the global business process. However, many blockchain believers prefer to eschew cryptocurrencies and the same line of thinking is influencing cryptocurrency regulations that are taking shape in India. Thus, cryptocurrency market stakeholders have tried to lobby the government into recognizing the potential of virtual currencies. To them, the exclusion of virtual currencies is particularly problematic. Commenting on the matter, the head of an Indian Bitcoin lobbyist group, Ajeet Khurana said: We had one meeting specifically on this topic. A public blockchain needs to have a token, and you can’t have it by excluding cryptocurrencies. Moreover, a public blockchain is analogous to the internet, and no one can control it. While the panel continues its deliberations, the country’s cryptocurrency market continues to face the RBI ban, which prohibits local banks from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions. Many stakeholders have challenged the legality of the ban, and a suit is currently before the Supreme Court. In July, after a preliminary hearing on the matter, the court adjourned until September 11, for its final decision. "body": "Don’t expect any final cryptocurrency regulations in India at least until the end of the year, according to members of the government panel set up to examine the emerging virtual currency ecosystem in the country.\n\nTHE CONUNDRUM THAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY\nIndia isn’t the first country that has struggled with adequately defining what cryptocurrencies are, in terms of being currencies, commodities, or securities. Particularly problematic for the finance ministry panel looking into cryptocurrencies in India is the means by which they can separate cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.\n\nThe inability to gain any headway in its deliberations has caused a series of delays. The panel was expected to submit its findings in July 2018. However, available indications suggest that the committee won’t be ready with a report until late 2018.\n\nSpeaking to Quartz India, an anonymous state official said:\n\nThere are lots of issues that need understanding and lots of studying needs to be done. Blockchain is an interesting thing. We definitely want to milk it effectively for financial transactions. So, all officials are really trying hard to understand how to separately use blockchain, without cryptocurrency. And understanding a new software takes time.\n\nTHE CRYPTOCURRENCY – BLOCKCHAIN DICHOTOMY\nBlockchain technology seems to have almost universal acceptance as a legitimate technological concept with profound implications for the global business process. However, many blockchain believers prefer to eschew cryptocurrencies and the same line of thinking is influencing cryptocurrency regulations that are taking shape in India.\n\nThus, cryptocurrency market stakeholders have tried to lobby the government into recognizing the potential of virtual currencies. To them, the exclusion of virtual currencies is particularly problematic. Commenting on the matter, the head of an Indian Bitcoin lobbyist group, Ajeet Khurana said:\n\nWe had one meeting specifically on this topic. A public blockchain needs to have a token, and you can’t have it by excluding cryptocurrencies. Moreover, a public blockchain is analogous to the internet, and no one can control it.\n\nWhile the panel continues its deliberations, the country’s cryptocurrency market continues to face the RBI ban, which prohibits local banks from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions.\n\n\n\nMany stakeholders have challenged the legality of the ban, and a suit is currently before the Supreme Court. In July, after a preliminary hearing on the matter, the court adjourned until September 11, for its final decision.\n\nDo you expect the Indian government to settle on favorable cryptocurrency regulations? Keep the conversation going in the comment section below!",

titleIranian Hackers Developing Ransomware for Bitcoin, Cybersecurity Experts Warn
bodyAs the US gets ready to impose sanctions on Iran, hackers in that country are working on ransomware to secure bitcoin, according to cybersecurity experts interviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Accenture PLC’s cybersecurity intelligence group has followed five Iranian built ransomware variations in the last two years. The hackers are hoping to secure payments in cryptocurrencies, according to Jim Guinn, who oversees the industrial cybersecurity business at Accenture. Several clues link the ransomware to Iran. Samples include messages in Farsi that are connected to Iran based computers. A recent Accenture report noted the ransomware could be driven by Iranian government supported parties, criminals, or both. Scourge Continues Ransomware has plagued both businesses and governments for years, having disabled payment systems at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, U.K hospitals and cargo shipments. Government supported hackers in some instances have obtained cryptocurrency payments from victims. One variant of ransomware that iDefense discovered has been linked to Iran’s government, according to CrowdStrike Inc., another cybersecurity firm. The software, called Tyrant, was developed to discourage Iranian citizens from downloading software designed to discourage government snooping, CrowdStrike noted. Palo Alto Networks Inc. and Symantec Corp. issued reports last month that described a pair of data stealing operations connected to Iran. Crypto Mining Linked To Iran Crypto mining software, which robs computers of their processing power to mine cryptocurrencies, has also been linked to Iran. Accenture cited crypto mining software installed on Middle Eastern customer networks equipped with digital clues to Iran. Crypto mining software has created problems in gas and oil facilities in the Middle East, Guinn said. He estimated millions of dollars of compute cycles have been stolen in the last year. Iran Denies Culpability Iran has claimed it has not been involved in cyber attacks, and that it has been a hacking victim. A cyber attack called Stuxnet initiated by the U.S. and Israel about a decade ago disabled uranium-enrichment centrifuges for Iran’s nuclear program. Iran has since focused on enhancing its own cyber capabilities, according to government officials and security researchers. Keith Alexander, chief executive of IronNet Cybersecurity Inc. and former director of the U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency said crypto mining and theft is a way for cash-strapped countries to make fast profits. Guinn said hackers have also stolen intellectual property.

title52 QUINTILLION PER SECOND: BITCOIN HASHRATE BREAKS DIZZYING NEW RECORD
bodyBitcoin’s network hashrate reached a new record high this week, prompting encouragement from industry commentators as technical support continues to grow exponentially. MORE HASHES THAN SAND ON EARTH Data from Blockchain (formerly Blockchain.info) confirms that the current hashrate has reached 52 quintillion hashes per second. This marks the first time Bitcoin has reached the threshold in its history. As a means of comparison, the number of grains of sand on Earth is around 7 quintillion, while the planet also contains approximately 326 quintillion gallons of water. The achievement for Bitcoin marks a continuation of accelerating hashrate growth which has characterized the cryptocurrency this year. The Blockchain data confirms a 60 percent increase in the past three months alone, while Bitcoinist last reported on hashrate highs in mid-June when the figure had reached 43 quintillion. 52 quintillion (52,000,000,000,000,000,000) is such a large number that it is difficult to put into perspective, as one Twitter commentator noted retweeting the figures. ‘IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT SELLERS ARE THINKING’ At the time, Russia Today host and cryptocurrency proponent Max Keiser forecast an imminent price increase on the back of the technical fundamentals, arguing that “price follows hashrate.” BTC/USD shot up 15 percent just days later. This time, thoughts are again turning to price upturns as Bitcoin subsequently cooled from multi-week highs close to $8500. “Even assuming a 10 percent growth rate, it makes you wonder what sellers are thinking. Must be close to the bottom for [cryptocurrency],” former head of global emerging markets at insurance giant AIG’s commodity division Philippe M. Heilberg wrote on Twitter about the Bitcoin hash rate August 6. Despite a correction over the past week, faith in Bitcoin’s short-term future remains strong. The announcement by New York Stock Exchange owner ICE that it would build and launch a regulated digital asset platform by November served to bolster beliefs that BTC/USD has bottomed, despite misgivings from certain Wall Street sources about genuine industry interest in cryptocurrency.

titleBitcoin Climbing to $7,500, But This Report States BTC Price Will Only Further Plunge
bodyBitcoin has yet again come in the green as prices move a bit upwards after days of downward momentum. However, according to the latest report of Goldman Sachs, the prices are expected to further decline in the future. Bitcoin [BTC] makes recovery, eyeing $7,500 Bitcoin is currently trading in the green after days of an onslaught from bears. With a 1.02 percent rise in the past 24 hours, Bitcoin is changing hands at $7,450 at the time of writing. However, the world’s leading cryptocurrency has lost over 62 percent of its value since it touched the peak at about $20,000 in December, last year. At the beginning of this week, Bitcoin started in green as the past two weeks have Bitcoin prices surge above $8,000. But this entire week, the bears have its claws into the prices that took prices below $7,500. Yesterday, the temporary volatility at OKEx, one of the biggest exchanges injected 2500 BTC that accompanied the price drop. With NYSE’s parent company all set to launch a platform for bitcoin, the market seems to welcome the greens back. Bitcoin is yet again eying $7,500 before making its way to the psychologically important $8,000 level. Also, read: Experts Favour Bitcoin ETF: Gold Being Unregulated Market & Institutional Investors Raises the Bar Cryptos getting more than warranted attention But Goldman Sachs, the leading global investment, and banking company are not at all optimistic of the bitcoin price in the near future. According to its mid-year economic report, “cryptocurrency mania” will create an unsteady market for the rest of this year. Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs made headlines by announcing its plans to open a bitcoin trading desk. But looks like it isn’t sold on cryptocurrency yet. Highlighting the six factors contributing to the unsteady economic-outlook, one of them is “bitcoin and cryptocurrency mania”. The investment strategy group of the bank is expecting the price of bitcoin to further decline more than what it already has in the past seven months. The report points out that, “cryptocurrencies would not retain value in their current incarnation remains intact and in fact borne out much sooner than we expected,” and added: “We expect further declines in the future given our view that these cryptocurrencies do not fulfill any of the three traditional roles of a currency.” Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, the chief investment officer of the private wealth management group at Goldman also stated, “Such declines will not negatively impact the performance of financial assets because cryptocurrencies represent just 0.3 percent of world GDP as of mid-2018. In fact, we believe that they garner far more traditional media and social media attention than is warranted.” Bitcoin (BTC) price has again registered gains, small they might be as the report of big names viz. NYSE parent company, Intercontinental exchange, Google, and Starbucks officially enter the crypto market.
