| body | Cybercriminals are including selfies in leaked data dumps listed for sale on the dark web. It is now no-brainer that you can literally get anything from the dark web. Commonly perceived as the Internet’s “shrouded underbelly,” the dark web is famous for its exclusive hidden markets which make a brisk trade in the sale of weapons, personal documents and identities, not to mention narcotics. Nonetheless, it is the category of “personal identities and details” that has in recent times taken a rather interesting turn. Apparently, some cyber-crooks have now gone as far as including selfies in their data dumps. Recently, Sixgill, an Israel-based dark web research company, came across a significant data dump up for sale on a primarily Russian-language dark web forum. What particularly set this dump apart from the rest of the large chunk of data available was that for every record, there was an accompanying selfie of the said user. Inside the Dark Web Data Dump In an interview with TNW, Sixgill Cyber Intelligence Lead Alex Karlinsky outlined that they stumbled upon an exclusive advertisement where one seller was offering about 100,000 documents for a significant sum of $50,000. According to him, the advertisement was in a predominantly Russian-speaking closed-access forum and the documents mentioned included the victims’ proof of address, passport or ID and, surprisingly, a selfie. Although data dumps that include various forms of information on the dark web are not a new thing, data accompanied by a selfie was a first and unusual discovery even for an accredited research firm such as Sixgill. So exactly what is the purpose of selling selfies? In themselves, selfies have a very insignificant importance to an adversary. Nonetheless, when incorporated with other more customary information proofs, they can enable a perpetrator to not only open bank accounts, but also access credits using the victim’s name. 3d illustration. Open "trash" button with yellow folders. It is now no-brainer that you can literally get anything from the dark web. Currently, some banks are allowing their customers to open bank accounts by uploading a selfie together with scans of various relevant documents, as a way of verifying their identity. The popularity of this action has gradually grown since the banks are attempting to replace customary branch services with contemporary online alternatives. This is particularly evident in the emerging swathe of online-only banks making their way into the banking sector in recent times. Sixgill went on to state that the individual who had put these documents up for sale on the dark web was also offering them in smaller cheaper chunks. Moreover, they also came across another dark web anonymous seller selling identities in an unusually piecemeal style. For $70 only, you would get yourself a person’s ID documents, together with a selfie. Cloud Platforms Increasingly Vulnerable to Breaches Unfortunately, Karlinsky was unable to trace back the dark web data dump source. According to him, the easiest way of obtaining a person’s selfie is from a malware-infected device. What’s more, one other way to obtain selfies is gaining access to a system that safeguards people’s private information, or otherwise hacking into it. The latter instance is more likely. Usually, one of the most common document leak sources is a cloud storage platform that is inadequately secured, such as Amazon S3. Last month, the photo IDs and passports of about 119,000 FedEx clients stored in a publicly-accessible storage platform (Amazon S3) were identified on an unsecured server. This particular server was under the control of Bongo International, a firm acquired by FedEx in 2014, rebranded in 2015 to FedEx Cross-Border International but eventually discontinued last year. Researchers from Kromtech, a German security company, connected these ID documents to individuals from across the globe including nations such as Canada, the United States, Australia and several European nations. These IDs were accompanied by shipping forms which listed address information and contacts. Although there is yet a suggestion proposed citing that any malicious third-parties have accessed these FedEx documents, this instance, nonetheless, goes to show how inadequately-protected cloud platforms can lead to the wrongful exposure of potentially sensitive documents. Adopting Cybersecurity Best Practices While Karlinsky is not profoundly troubled that people are actively posting photos and “selfies” on Instagram, he strongly urges individuals to be vigilant when revealing their identities online. According to him, before you can provide anyone with either your photograph or personal documents, it is important you ask yourself who you are proving your identity to and if it is at all worth it. He further adds that as a precaution, he would advise users against taking selfies while holding their ID. Lastly, he also recommends against having photos of personal documents and IDs stored in a mobile phone, computer or server. This is in case the device contracts malware. |

| body | Blockchain technology promises to revolutionize a number of industries and it has made its way into the most obscure sectors of society. The old saying ‘sex sells’ rings true in this day and age and the industry is truly massive, catering to a voracious appetite for services like dating websites, pornography, strippers and other sexual offerings. Given the massive market for these types of offerings, it's not surprising that some innovative minds have seen the value that Blockchain technology can offer their specific businesses. Some of it is groundbreaking, while other instances have merely adopted the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payments for their wares. Nevertheless, it shows how cryptocurrency adoption is growing across a broad economic spectrum. The benefits of anonymity As British tabloid The Sun reported last month, performers at a popular Las Vegas strip club have started accepting tips for their services in cryptocurrency. Some of the scantily clad strippers have temporary QR codes on their body, allowing clients to pay for their services with virtual currencies. The owner of the club, Nick Blomgren, maintains that it is a stroke of genius that allows people to keep their raunchy proclivities hidden, given the use of cryptocurrencies which facilitate anonymous transactions. One of the performers at the club said some banks will even cancel accounts of clients that are found to be working in the adult entertainment industry. Cryptocurrencies protect their privacy while providing an anonymous means of getting paid. Infamous American brothel The Bunny Ranch is also understood to be exploring the use of Bitcoin as a payment option. Owner Dennis Hof also hammered home the power of privacy provided by cryptocurrency. Wealthy clientele go to great lengths to keep their sexual habits a secret, and being able to pay for their after-work hobbies anonymously goes a step further in ensuring that happens. Platforms powering adult content Adult entertainment lives online and the appetite for content far outweighs seems to have outgrown available advertising revenue. Blockchain startup Vice Industries recognized this and turned the idea on its head. Users of the service are rewarded for watching content in VIT tokens, which can then be used to pay for premium content and other services of participating websites. Its ICO raised $22 mln, and it’s been supported by the likes of Penthouse and more recently Playboy, who will adopt the service to allow users to pay for access to explicit content with virtual currency. Blockchain overhauling online dating According to Forbes, the online dating industry is a $3 bln market, with the likes of Tinder pushing the envelope in the past few years. Data from GlobalWebIndex indicated that 91 mln people worldwide were using dating apps in 2015, with men accounting for over 66 percent of that number. With that being said, there are a number of ICOs that are looking to overhaul the online dating space. This specific sector of the market is massive, with millions of hopeful singles looking to find love online. A quick Internet search brings up a couple of interesting ICOs that want to reinvent online dating services with the use of Blockchain technology. Matchpool isn’t really a dating app, it's more of a tool to help people find like-minded individuals with similar interests and setup platforms to bring groups of people together. Nevertheless, it’s a tool that connects people, whatever their interests and this in itself is a platform that facilitates genuine connections between people. Meanwhile, out-and-out dating Blockchain apps Hicky and Luna launched their token sales last month, the former on Valentines Day, and these two platforms marry conventional dating apps with Blockchain in an interesting way. Hicky’s platform promises to provide genuine profiles through face and voice recognition, ruling out the creation of fake accounts by bots. Interactions between users will be facilitated by microtransactions with the HKY tokens, in the hopes of reducing spam messages between users. The main drawcard here is genuine verification of users and safety of information encrypted on the Blockchain. However is this enough of an innovation to challenge the likes of Tinder and other popular dating apps and websites? Luna’s developers highlight the shortcomings of conventional dating apps in their white paper. Namely “poor messaging behavior, fake accounts, and misuse of personal data.” So their offering is pretty simple, users of the app have to pay to send messages with tokens called Stars to other users they’re interested in. The more you pay to send a message, the higher it sits in the recipient’s inbox. Luna hopes to reduce spam messages, and once a conversation is started, the two users don’t need to pay any further fees to converse. One potential shortcoming is the assumption that users will be willing to pay in order to start conversations with other users. Nevertheless, these three platforms provide fresh ideas, using the benefits of Blockchain technology in an effort to facilitate communication, matchmaking and dating to modern society. It’s a fresh take, from the ‘swipe left swipe right,’ ‘pay more to search’ offerings of conventional dating apps. Some are a bit more obscure. Legalfling allows people to sign a live contract stipulating that they’ve consented to various sexual interactions. It means people have made it clear what they’ve agreed to - and that information is safely stored on the Legalfling Blockchain. Should people come to a dispute over their sexual interaction, whatever the reason, they will be able to battle it out in court with a legal record of what they’d actually consented to, as the contracts are legally binding. It’s an interesting innovation, which could help solve criminal cases like rape and abuse. The question is whether people will take the time to open an app and stipulate how far they're willing to go in the heat of the moment? A sign of the times Early adopters have traditionally been ahead of the pack and the same is likely to go for the adult entertainment industry. Businesses offering cryptocurrency payment options could well find support from patrons. Furthermore, industries that have been transformed by technology, like dating apps over the past 10 years, are going to be challenged by companies using Blockchain to drive innovation in their offerings. Many more are sure to follow suit, as we’ve seen in the financial sector. Investment firms have been clamoring to catch up with CME and CBOE and their landmark Bitcoin futures offerings in December. Online offerings stand the most to gain from Blockchain technology and the next Tinder or similar services could well be back by this technology. |

| body | Those investors who had the foresight (or the fortune) to buy into bitcoin in its earliest days and then held onto the cryptocurrency when it took off over the past year are now extremely wealthy. (See more: Who Are the Top 5 Bitcoin Millionaires?) The largest digital currency in the world by market capitalization has performed excessively well in the past few years, and the result is that many casual investors who timed it right and held onto their BTC ended up as millionaires. In the wake of bitcoin's price explosion and as more digital currencies flood the market, investors are looking for the next digital currency to get rich off of. The question is, how does one go about finding a cryptocurrency which will take off in the future? Price Is Crucial One element to keep in mind when scanning for the next superstar is the price of the token. For the average investor who doesn't have a great deal of money to put into the cryptocurrency space, low-priced currencies may offer the best bang for your buck. Imagine a potential investment of $5,000: at today's prices, that money could buy less than half of one bitcoin, over 25 litecoin, or thousands of coins from one or more currencies priced below $1 each. The ability to diversify with low-priced coins should not be overlooked. Prospects for Adoption Heading into 2018, ripple made huge growth. While XRP has declined somewhat since the start of the new year, it nonetheless has strong potential for adoption outside of the cryptocurrency speculation world. The reason for this has to do with the system of settlement that ripple's underlying technology promises to central banks and other financial institutions. (See also: Ripple Cryptocurrency Woos China's Central Bank.) If you're able to identify a cryptocurrency which has an edge over others (and which therefore may be more likely to be widely adopted), this may be a good investment. Supply Is a Factor Most cryptocurrencies have a pre-determined maximum supply. When that maximum is reached, typically through mining efforts, no new tokens will be produced. (See also: Only 20 Percent Of Total Bitcoins Remain To Be Mined.) If interest maintains while the supply is fixed, the price could go up. Be sure to consider the total supply and the current circulation of any cryptocurrency before you invest. Price and Volume Up-to-date information about cryptocurrency trading is easily available online. Those digital currencies with increasing price and volume of trades are likely to be those that have momentum going forward. Of course, there is no guarantee that this momentum will maintain, but it is nonetheless a useful way of seeing which digital currencies have the most investor interest for the time being. |

"body": "\n\nThose investors who had the foresight (or the fortune) to buy into bitcoin in its earliest days and then held onto the cryptocurrency when it took off over the past year are now extremely wealthy. (See more: Who Are the Top 5 Bitcoin Millionaires?) The largest digital currency in the world by market capitalization has performed excessively well in the past few years, and the result is that many casual investors who timed it right and held onto their BTC ended up as millionaires.\n\nIn the wake of bitcoin's price explosion and as more digital currencies flood the market, investors are looking for the next digital currency to get rich off of. The question is, how does one go about finding a cryptocurrency which will take off in the future?\n\nPrice Is Crucial\nOne element to keep in mind when scanning for the next superstar is the price of the token. For the average investor who doesn't have a great deal of money to put into the cryptocurrency space, low-priced currencies may offer the best bang for your buck.\n\n\n\nImagine a potential investment of $5,000: at today's prices, that money could buy less than half of one bitcoin, over 25 litecoin, or thousands of coins from one or more currencies priced below $1 each. The ability to diversify with low-priced coins should not be overlooked.\n\nProspects for Adoption\nHeading into 2018, ripple made huge growth. While XRP has declined somewhat since the start of the new year, it nonetheless has strong potential for adoption outside of the cryptocurrency speculation world. The reason for this has to do with the system of settlement that ripple's underlying technology promises to central banks and other financial institutions. | body | A recent survey says 12 percent of adults continue this childhood habit Its persistence is partly due to the fact that sucking is the first reflex we learn Sandra Trebinski of the Hypnotherapy Centre, in Windsor, Berkshire, sees at least 200 or 300 adult thumb-suckers a month Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood. Every night, Karen Sparrow rests her head on her pillow, pulls the covers around her and sucks her thumb. But Karen is not a toddler trying to soothe herself to sleep. She is a grown woman of 38, with a job as a data analyst and a family — and this bad habit left over from childhood causes serious disruption to her life. While concentrating at her desk, Karen’s thumb creeps into her mouth. Driving in her car, she unthinkingly takes one hand off the wheel to suck her thumb. Once, she even started doing it in a job interview. According to a recent survey, 12 percent of adults continue sucking the childhood habit of sucking their thumb +3 According to a recent survey, 12 percent of adults continue sucking the childhood habit of sucking their thumb ‘I was in front of a panel when everyone started staring at me and I thought: “Did I answer a question wrong?” Then I realized: I was sucking my thumb,’ says Karen, from North London. ‘I apologized and they all started laughing, saying that they’d never seen anything like it before. I was so embarrassed, but I did get the job — I think it made a good talking point! The habit is so ingrained that, when Karen dislocated her shoulder seven years ago and had to wear a sling — preventing her from sucking her left thumb as usual — she ended up sucking the right thumb instead. ‘I couldn’t not suck my thumb,’ she says. ‘I find it so comforting and relaxing. I do it while I’m watching TV and in bed where it helps me to go to sleep. The only time I feel self-conscious is at work, because I know it looks so childish.’ Clinical psychologist Helen Nightingale says adult thumb-sucking happens automatically and can have a familial cause. ‘It’s often passed down in families,’ she says. ‘It’s highly self- soothing and, as such, it is very resistant to change.’. Her mother used to paint Karen’s nails with varnish so the bitter taste would put her off. ‘But it never worked,’ she says. ‘And now, I don’t want to stop.’ The only time Karen thinks twice about her habit is when she’s with her 11-year-old daughter, Ashley, who cries out with embarrassment when she sees her mother inadvertently sucking her thumb in public. ‘If it happens when we’re out shopping, she’ll give my hand a light slap and tell me to stop,’ says Karen. ‘I know she finds it ridiculous because I’m a grown woman, and I suppose it is.’ Ridiculous it may be, but according to a recent survey, 12 percent of adults continue this childhood habit. No one knows exactly why the thumb is sucked, but it is likely to do with ease of access as a fetus and baby +3 No one knows exactly why the thumb is sucked, but it is likely to do with ease of access as a fetus and baby Its persistence is partly due to the fact that sucking is the first reflex we learn; it is a survival instinct developed in the womb that becomes the sucking reflex responsible for breastfeeding. No one knows exactly why the thumb is sucked, but it is likely to do with ease of access as a foetus and baby. Sandra Trebinski of the Hypnotherapy Centre, in Windsor, Berkshire, sees at least 200 or 300 adult thumb-suckers a month — and believes the habit can be down to attention-seeking as well as its ability to provide emotional comfort in times of stress. ‘While most children drop the habit naturally, those who continue will often receive parental criticism which, while negative, is still attention and works to get them noticed,’ says Sandra. According to a recent survey, 12 percent of adults continue this childhood habit ‘The longer that the habit continues, the more it becomes ingrained in the subconscious and becomes an anchor activity that induces a relaxed state of mind.’ However, those who come into Sandra’s clinic are often desperate to break the habit. ‘Many say how essential the thumb-sucking has been as a stress reliever, whether at work or through exams, but they have finally reached a tipping point and want to stop,’ says Sandra. ‘Often it’s to do with their teeth — the sucking can damage the shape of the jaw and position of the teeth, causing them to protrude.’ And if clients are about to get braces to rectify the damage, they don’t want to undo all the work by thumb-sucking. ‘Or perhaps they’ve changed job or got a new partner. There’s a fair bit of secrecy and shame and fear of being found out, which can be reason enough to stop.’ Sandra’s sessions, which are 90 minutes and cost £95, involve putting her clients into a hypnotic trance then suggesting they leave the habit behind. Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood +3 Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood ‘Thumb-suckers by nature tend to go into a trance-like state when they’re sucking so they are often more open to hypnotherapy,’ she explains. Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood. Natalie Rogers, 33, who is training in child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing, has no intention of seeking treatment for her thumb-sucking, even if it means having to hide it from potential boyfriends. Natalie, who lives in Southgate, North London, says: ‘I remember at 16 sitting in my then boyfriend’s house and his mum scolding me, telling me that it wasn’t appropriate for a girl of my age. ‘As I’ve got older, I do it mostly at night when I have trouble falling asleep. ‘When I start dating someone, I have to do it secretly, though sometimes I’ve done it without thinking and have had to quickly take it out.’ Anna Reay, 35, has also found her childish habit disruptive to her love life. The singing coach from Newcastle upon Tyne confesses that after a less than successful night out with a boyfriend, she went home early just so she could suck her thumb in bed. ‘It has been such an important part of my life for so long and I’ll do it everywhere,’ she says. Usually one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood Her fiance Stuart, 38, who runs a joinery business, rolls his eyes and tells her to stop, but she says the only reason she would quit is to protect her teeth. ‘I had braces for years when I was younger and I now wear a retainer behind my front and lower teeth, but I think they’ve definitely moved forwards,’ says Anna. Orthodontist Dr Neil Counihan set up Metamorphosis Orthodontics, the UK’s first thumb-sucking clinic, in 2008. The clinic, in South-West London, targets children between eight and 18 as well as adults. ‘Persistent thumb-sucking can reshape the mouth,’ he says. ‘Before the age of six, it’s fine as your adult teeth haven’t come in, but once they do the problems can start.’ Like any habit, Dr Counihan says it takes a conscious effort to break it. ‘You can try physical barriers such as thumb guards, but ultimately you have to want to stop,’ he says. Karen, luckily, hasn’t had any problems with her teeth, though her favourite thumb for sucking, she observes, is inexplicably slightly shorter than the other one! ‘As habits go, it’s harmless and not a bad one, is it?’ says Karen, as she — you guessed it — starts to suck her thumb. |

There’s a fair bit of secrecy and shame and fear of being found out, which can be reason enough to stop.’\n\n\n\nSandra’s sessions, which are 90 minutes and cost £95, involve putting her clients into a hypnotic trance then suggesting they leave the habit behind.\n\n Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood\t+3\n Usually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood\n\n‘Thumb-suckers by nature tend to go into a trance-like state when they’re sucking so they are often more open to hypnotherapy,’ she explains.\n\nUsually, one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood.\n\nNatalie Rogers, 33, who is training in child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing, has no intention of seeking treatment for her thumb-sucking, even if it means having to hide it from potential boyfriends.\n\nNatalie, who lives in Southgate, North London, says: ‘I remember at 16 sitting in my then boyfriend’s house and his mum scolding me, telling me that it wasn’t appropriate for a girl of my age.\n\n‘As I’ve got older, I do it mostly at night when I have trouble falling asleep.\n\n‘When I start dating someone, I have to do it secretly, though sometimes I’ve done it without thinking and have had to quickly take it out.’\n\nAnna Reay, 35, has also found her childish habit disruptive to her love life.\n\nThe singing coach from Newcastle upon Tyne confesses that after a less than successful night out with a boyfriend, she went home early just so she could suck her thumb in bed.\n\n‘It has been such an important part of my life for so long and I’ll do it everywhere,’ she says.\n\n Usually one session is enough to break the habit that has lasted since childhood\nHer fiance Stuart, 38, who runs a joinery business, rolls his eyes and tells her to stop, but she says the only reason she would quit is to protect her teeth.\n\n‘I had braces for years when I was younger and I now wear a retainer behind my front and lower teeth, but I think they’ve definitely moved forwards,’ says Anna.\n\nOrthodontist Dr Neil Counihan set up Metamorphosis Orthodontics, the UK’s first thumb-sucking clinic, in 2008.\n\nThe clinic, in South-West London, targets children between eight and 18 as well as adults.\n\n‘Persistent thumb-sucking can reshape the mouth,’ he says. ‘Before the age of six, it’s fine as your adult teeth haven’t come in, but once they do the problems can start.’\n\nLike any habit, Dr Counihan says it takes a conscious effort to break it.\n\n‘You can try physical barriers such as thumb guards, but ultimately you have to want to stop,’ he says.\n\nKaren, luckily, hasn’t had any problems with her teeth, though her favourite thumb for sucking, she observes, is inexplicably slightly shorter than the other one!\n\n‘As habits go, it’s harmless and not a bad one, is it?’ says Karen, as she — you guessed it — starts to suck her thumb.",

| body | Elon Musk famously stated that he thinks the chances are 1 in billions that we aren’t in a simulation. He is not the first to think or talk about this, but he is a famous person these days, so I’m going with him. The argument boils down to this: Compute power is growing exponentially. We are very interested in simulations for both entertainment and technical reasons. With both of these holding true, eventually, we’ll be able to construct arbitrarily-perfect simulations of entire universes. If you’re in a good-enough simulated universe, nothing is stopping you from simulating “one deeper” If all of this is true, there would be more simulated realities than base realities, making it statistically more likely that we are in a simulated reality. When smart people say stuff that doesn’t make intuitive sense, I can’t help but endlessly think and re-think through the details. Having studied physics and working in software, I’m familiar with exploring alien, complex, and non-intuitive domains and finding great new truths there. After much thought, I don’t think there’s much here — I think Elon et. al. are out to lunch. Sorry. There’s a lot of interesting armchair philosophy involving brains, vats, and more, which have been explored ad nauseam — watch The Matrix if you haven’t already — but I don’t really want to go there right now. What I want to talk about is the assumptions that lead people like Elon to the conclusion that we are likely to be in a simulated reality. Assumption one: compute power is growing exponentially and will continue to do so forever. Even a slow-growing exponential curve will do surprising things if you run it for long enough. If you fold a paper in half (doubling the thickness every time), it will be as thick as the observable universe after about a hundred folds. Assuming that the past 100 or so years of compute power doubling will continue at some pace or another for the next million years is troubling for two reasons. The first is that it’s illogical to assume something will last significantly longer than it already has. The second is the plain old reality. An average sheet of paper can’t be folded more than 7 times. You can squeeze a few more in by bending the rules, but eventually you just run out of space. Even Gordon Moore thinks that his eponymous law will start winding down around 2025. In the end, I think it’s pretty reasonable to assume that “computation density” has a physical upper limit, and we’ll start to bump up against it in the next 50 or 100 years. Assumption two: computation will continue to be the rate limiting factor. Right now, we are limited in many of the things that we do by computation speed. We have to optimize simulations in order to get what we want done in finite time on the computers that we have. To see where this might go in a million years (or a thousand), consider a strange analogy: sand. There are (in round numbers) ten billion tons of sand, at $10 per ton, so 100 billion dollars worth of sand in the world. Apple (the computer company) could, in principle, buy all of the sand in the world. Why don’t they? Because they just don’t need that much damn sand! Similarly, there might be enough compute power in a few hundred/thousand/million years to do a competent universe simulation for the budget of a small country or even a rich individual, but it’ll still cost money… At some point, someone has to decide to hit “go” on the giant simulation, and source and/or pay for the power that it requires. What would motivate someone to do that? Assumption three: we’ll get close to perfect simulations. Simulations are an incredible tool for understanding our world. We’ve gotten better and better at it, and we’ll continue to do so. However, at some point it’s just easier to do the thing in real life rather than simulation. Back in the 40’s, the Mississippi River Basin Model was constructed in order to better understand how rainfall and other environmental factors affected flooding. They built a model because it was easier to do so than to do the calculations by hand. Currently, a lot of things that used to be done in wind tunnels are now done on desktop workstations and supercomputers. As our understanding and compute power grows, more and more can be done in software. However, it’s crucial to recognize the idea of “constraints” — limitations added to the simulation to make it simpler. You have to pick and choose what to simulate or test at any given time, you just can’t do it all at once. A wind tunnel test is not a crash test, and the real world is both, all the time. Removing all the constraints means that actually doing something is more efficient than simulating it. This isn’t a question of shrinking computers, or making them more powerful. You’ll never be able to perfectly simulate any large system with any degree of efficiency. Assumption four: nested simulations. Even if I grant you hat you might get somewhere close to a high-efficiency simulation, I don’t see any way to argue that a simulated computer simulation would be higher efficiency than a simulation in a base reality. Nesting a simulation doesn’t give you free computation somehow — you still have to do calculations somewhere in the base reality. Picturing a base reality with billions of nested simulations running inside it makes no sense whatsoever — even if it were physically possible, what would possess someone to do nothing but build and maintain a gigantic supercomputer responsible for simulating billions of sub-realities? Do you really expect me to believe that an average computer might be so powerful that this might happen accidentally? I’m arguing that not just one of the assumptions is implausible, but all of them are fatally flawed. No amount of waving of the “exponential growth magic wand” gets you out of the fundamental issues — it just doesn’t seem to hold water. It seems to me that this is a clear-cut case of reducto ad absurdem — if following logically from first principles results in something absurd, then one of your principles is incorrect. All that being said, I’d love to hear flaws in my assumptions, logic, or conclusions — I mostly wrote this all down because I kind of hope someone will tell me I’m missing something! |

Want to be the most interesting person in the room? Well, whether you're introverted or extroverted, it doesn't really matter: There are things one must do to have the kind of captivating conversations that will attract others to your social circle. Before I get to the seven questions that will ignite those conversations, here are three principles you must apply first or you may as well toss in the towel now. 1. Know when you're being boring. Most of us don't have a good internal barometer for knowing when we bore others, since we think we're so fascinating. Take this advice from Scott Adams, author of How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life: Be brief and be positive. Brief: Make a habit of being to the point and not dragging on and on. People who talk slowly, pause a long time before responding, and process their thoughts in mid-sentence will lose the listener faster than you can spell b-o-r-i-n-g. Positive: Stay upbeat in conversation (beware of polarizing topics like religion and politics), and avoid being serious, monotone, or like a bump on a log--show emotions, laugh at people's jokes, smile when they smile, and make light of awkward situations. Another way to tell if you are about to put someone to sleep is to listen for questions. If the other person is not asking you questions, that should clue you in that your conversation is going south; it may be time to cut your story short and ask the other person a question. 2. Be curious. Several studies published in the Greater Good Science Center seem to agree that curious people have better relationships. The research suggests that curious people connect better, cope better with rejection, and enjoy socializing more. In fact, other people are more easily attracted and feel socially closer to individuals that display curiosity. George Mason University psychologist Todd Kashdan, author of Curious?, conducted one of the studies and wasn't surprised by his findings: "Being interested is more important in cultivating a relationship and maintaining a relationship than being interesting; that's what gets the dialogue going. It's the secret juice of relationships," stated Kashdan in Greater Good. Fellow Inc. columnist Rhett Power, co-founder of Wild Creations, says "curiosity drives interest: What does this person think, what makes him 'tick,' how does she do that, what does he want to have happen, how does she view the world? And people with humility understand that they don't have all the answers and that each person they meet, each experience, has something to teach them." 3. Tell a good story (or two). It's good to have a few go-to stories you can pull out of your hat when you sense a conversation losing momentum. Have stories you can share that are well-rehearsed, meaning, they've been tested with other audiences and found to be reliably funny, entertaining, informative, or engaging. Scott Adams suggests putting your focus on stories about other people, rather than things, because most of us find human behavior fascinating. 7 questions that lead to great conversations You meet someone for the first time, get his or her name, and strike up a conversation. The next thing out of your mouth may be: What's up? What do you do? Where are you from? Booooring. Instead of asking the casual, basic stuff we're all tired of answering, hit 'em up with these great conversational questions, beginning with my No.1 most favorite question. Note: Some may require you to start with more basic stuff as you build rapport and put someone at ease. And it goes without saying: Return serve by answering these yourself. 1. What's your story? This is open-ended enough to trigger an intriguing story--a journey to a foreign country, living out of a van while touring in a rock band, getting funded for the startup of your dreams, a special God-given talent used for improving lives, etc. 2. What was the highlight of your day (or week)? This question puts the conversation on a positive note right off the bat, giving the other person a chance to reflect on something he or she is excited about. 3. What is one of your most defining moments in life? This is another great question that invites the speaker to share on a deeper level, which builds momentum and rapport quicker. Obviously, a few casual questions before this one helps set the mood for hearing about a profound moment or transition in that person's life. 4. What book has influenced you the most? A book that has made an impact can lead to a more personal and inviting conversation because of the book's life-changing effect. Asking this question will deepen your connection as you understand how the book altered the person's life in some way. It also leads to asking interesting follow-up questions. 5. What was your dream job growing up? Asking this is a great way to introspectively draw out a unique story from someone. We all dreamed about being something growing up--a doctor, a police officer, an astronaut, a super hero, and so on. Connect the dots to the present by asking if he or she still has those same aspirations as an adult (including being a super hero!). 6. If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask? For me, it's too obvious: Who really killed JFK? Perhaps for the person you just asked, it's "Is there a God?" Whatever the answer--serious, cerebral, funny, or ridiculous--it's interesting enough to clue you in to the other person's interests, values, beliefs, or sense of humor. 7. Why did you choose your profession? This is one of those questions I call "peeling the conversational onion." Learning about how people landed in their given profession has layers. It'll tell you what defines them, what motivates them, what they're passionate about, and whether their work is their calling or purpose. It may also trigger a different, more thought-provoking response: Some people aren't happy in their jobs. By asking, you may be in the position to assist or mentor a person through a career or job transition. Closing thought Did you notice a refreshing pattern in these questions? Perhaps you're not used to it, but you take the initiative and make the conversation about the other person. People love to talk about themselves--if they have something worth talking about that adds value to the conversation. Once they know you're not a wacko, by asking first, they'll appreciate your showing interest. This selfless act of putting the spotlight on someone else makes you the more interesting person in the room. |

| body | The tax deadline is around the corner, so it’s natural for questions to arise as people prepare to file. Most of us aren’t tax professionals, so there is a lot of confusion around this time of year. We’re here to help — here are the answers to some of the top questions people ask around tax season. 1. When are taxes due? This year, deadlines are a little different. The usual April 15 deadline lands on a Sunday this year, so the deadline should be the 16th, right? Actually no. April 16 lands on Emancipation Day — a recognized District of Columbia holiday — so the national deadline is April 17. If you file for an extension you will have until October 16 to file your taxes. 2. When can I file? The IRS started accepting electronic returns on January 23, 2017. Technically, if you really feel like cutting it down to the wire, you can wait until the night of April 17th, but that’s not recommended. If for whatever reason, something goes wrong and delays bring you past the deadline, you run the risk of incurring large late fees. It’s best to handle taxes well in advance of the deadline. 3. When will tax reform affect my taxes? Most provisions didn’t kick in until January 1, 2018, so your 2017 taxes — the taxes due this April — will mostly not be affected. As you plan for 2019 taxes, be aware there are new guidelines for withholdings, but again these don’t apply this year. 4. What can be expensed? For the nearly 35% of the workforce that subsists on freelance income, taxes can be extra tricky. Tax returns can be significantly reduced due to 1099 quarterly taxes, but one way to offset self-employment taxes is to expense correctly. Most anything can be expensed — as long as you have proof that it was used for business purposes. Popular expenses include, but are not limited to, your car, apartment, computer, cell phone, equipment, postage, and much, much more. 5. What is the minimum income level required to file taxes? There is no cut-and-dry answer to this question — filing status, a source of income, age and other factors all play into the taxpayer threshold. In general, if your gross income (all income from all sources) exceeds $10,000 you will have to pay federal tax. For freelancers, or what the IRS calls “non-employee compensation,” you have to pay taxes on anything over $600. This online IRS tool can help you determine if you owe federal tax or not. 6. How do I file my taxes? What might seem like a basic question is actually a genuine concern for many people — especially young professionals no longer under the tutelage of their parents. If you make less than $66,000 a year, you can file for free on the IRS website. In most cases, those with limited sources of income can simply upload a picture of their W2 and be done. Otherwise, if your taxes require a little more finesse, tax preparers like TurboTax or H&R Block offer online software, walk-in appointments, and even mobile apps to help guide the tax preparation process. 7. How long should I keep tax documents? It is generally recommended that you hold onto tax documents for three years. This is because, in the event of an IRS audit, you will be expected to present the last three years of documents. In extreme cases, such as suspicion of fraud, you will be expected to show seven years of documents. 8. Who can be claimed as a dependent? Each dependent comes with a tax exemption, so it’s important to solidify who can and cannot be claimed. Put simply, a dependent is anyone you support financially. A key requirement: you provided a least half of the dependent’s support for the year. This includes food, clothes, shelter, etc. 9. Does a tax audit negatively affect my credit? Owing the IRS doesn’t, in and of itself, affect your credit. But, how you choose to pay taxes certainly can. If you pay your taxes through credit — such as a credit card, personal loan, etc. — standard credit factors apply. Credit report items such as payment history, credit utilization, credit type, and more all still affect your FICO score even if you’re paying off a tax bill. Be mindful of your credit score before paying taxes on borrowed money. Check your credit for free online before borrowing money to pay taxes. 51% of Americans now approve of the tax law. That number is up from 37% in December. Buzz60 10. What is the Earned Income Tax Credit? Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for low, or middle-income families. To qualify for this break, you must meet specific requirements which involve income amount, filing status, qualifying dependents, and more. 11. Are unemployment benefits taxable? Unemployment compensation is reported under a 1099-G form, and this income is subject to quarterly estimated tax payments. Supplemental unemployment benefits that come from a company financed fund are not considered unemployment compensation, and this income is reported on your W2. In general, unemployment benefits are taxed. 12. What are qualified education expenses? Qualified education expenses are costs associated with a college education. This includes amounts paid for tuition, fees, school supplies, and other student costs. Items that cannot be expensed include room and board, insurance, medical expenses, transportation, non-credit courses, etc. 13. Is childcare deductible if I work full time? Many parents who work full time overlook the fact that, in many cases, they qualify for a sizeable tax deduction if their kids go to childcare while they work. Daycare, summer camp and other forms of childcare are eligible for deduction. Basically, if you work fulltime, and your child is under 13, you might qualify for a deduction up to $2,100. 14. Do I qualify for the child tax credit? The child tax credit can reduce your tax burden by up to $1,000 — per kid — if you meet certain requirements. Qualification criteria include age, child relationship, dependent status, family income, and more. 15. I’m married, but we keep our finances separate, so can I file as single? Technically, you can file separately, but you will miss out on many tax advantages that come with being married. Jointly filing couples receive a larger standard deduction, qualify for two exemptions, and, in some cases, qualify for two tax credits. If you have a financial reason to file separately it is possible, but it’s important to recognize the benefits of joint filing. Do I Need to File a Tax Return? | body | I have been following Blockchain for quite a while now. I understood the technology was innovative. But, I always wondered if it was hyped ? Diving deep into the field and interacting with thinkers assured me it wasn’t. Few insights written here, surfaced in my conversation with the Marketing Director of Vanywhere ,Gil Ram (Thank you Gil). Open Business It’s actually called Decentralised Autonomous Organisation, I use “ Open Business” to make it sound simple. Open Source communities which are the backbone of organizations like Linux, Google, etc have the least or no politics. I am not talking about the organization but their projects. For example, Hyperledger is a project by Linux Foundation. It will help you build applications for private Blockchain. People around the world contribute to this project. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are if you do good work, your code will be merged to the source. You are solely recognised for your work. I have observed people who know how to play cheap politics overpower people who work hard. In a Decentralised Autonomous Organisation, everyone’s work will be recorded on a transparent Blockchain. Your salary would be provided by the system which evaluates your work. Open Business will have the future of Open Source projects. Anyone anywhere with a business idea could start a Decentralised Organisation. Anyone could be a part of it, a programmer could be automatically added to the system based on his git profile. Every member of the organisation would be paid solely based on what each one brings to the table. The Future Is Going to Be Great For Producers You might have been already bored by the words “Eliminating middleman”. Let me tell you why it is a big deal. If I have to sell a book on Amazon, they take 50% of the sale as commission. Writing a book is hard work. It would take months to write a book. It would take double the time to find a publisher. These publishers have their own biases (JK Rowling Turned Down By 12 Publishers), even if your work is good it would never see the light. In case you get lucky and your book was published. The majority of the cut goes to the publisher. If you self-publish the book you have to break your sweat on marketing it. On top of that seeing Amazon take a huge cut is really painful. Only a few people dare to fight these challenge and become producers. Producers in almost every industries are exploited. The vegetables you ate today was produced by a farmer. In India, most farmers live in poverty. Datatery Popat Ghadwaje, 42, committed suicide after days of hushed chanting “the sky betrayed”. India's shocking farmer suicide epidemic Umbrale, India - After days of hushed chanting that "the sky betrayed" him, Datatery Popat Ghadwaje, 42, committed… www.aljazeera.com We can’t control the sky. But, giving a good deal of their hard work is a must. Governments try to solve the problem by giving farmers easy/reduced loans or pensions. These things don’t work. We need to go to the root of the problem and address it. We need system thinking here. We need a system that enforces farmers to get properly rewarded for their hard work. Middleman is hungry for power, fame, and money. Blockchain replaces them with computers. Computer systems are not hungry for power, fame, and money (Except for Bitcoin). Can a computer system replace middleman? What does a middleman do? He finds producers and consumers, buys from the producer for less and sells it to the consumer for a higher price. This can be easily replaced by a program, except the computer will give the producer a reasonable price. It’s also important that the program is transparent and not controlled by an individual. This system is what the Blockchain enables. The future is going to be great for writers, composers, singers, farmers, or producers in general. What about freelancers? Upwork takes 25% of my earnings, if I earn $1000 for a project, they take $250. That is a substantial amount! So how does Blockchain help? Upwork has infrastructure cost, they need to pay for their server, database, maintenance, etc. On a public blockchain like Ethereum, the infrastructure cost is reduced drastically. Reading data from Ethereum is free. On a centralized infrastructure which Upwork is based on, the more the people, more servers to handle the load and more money is needed. On a decentralised network, more the people, less money is required because the load is used to favour the Blockchain network. On a blockchain based platform, the fee can be as less as 4%–2%. I have to only pay around $40 or $20 as commission. That’s drastically less compared to $250. Vanywhere is building a blockchain based platform. Vanywhere I recently came across Vanywhere (yet to launch). The idea is to help people monetize their skill. It’s not limited to freelancers like in Upwork. If you have skills in cooking, fashion, traveling, sports, etc, you have an additional source of income with Vanywhere. The brilliant thing about Vanywhere is that they are a platform based on Blockchain. This means their infrastructure cost would be drastically less and they would take less commission compared to sites like Upwork who presently eat 25% of my revenue. Kindly note, this post is sponsored by Vanywhere. |
