      "body": "In the modern world, we, as consumers of media and entertainment are bombarded by a seemingly unending torrent of movies, television, radio, podcasts, books, and more. With this constant influx of entertainment vying for our attention, it is entirely possible that some sources go entirely unnoticed. So I have taken it upon myself to try to bring to light some of the lesser-known pieces which have entertained me, and leave it to your discretion to give them each a chance. I'm not saying that every choice I make is a great one, or will be a favorite, but perhaps it beats watching reality TV or restarting a series you've already completed. That being said, let's dive into the first entry: Sahara.\n\nSahara is an action/adventure movie starring Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn, and Penelope Cruz.\nhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QM_3bE1PWi8/Vj7G6xORx9I/AAAAAAAAIDE/7VvIBfAakWA/s660/cover.jpg\n*You never realize how difficult it is to spell those names until you try.*\n\nMatthew is at his \"McConaughey-ist\" as he plays an ex-Navy salvage diver with a heart of gold and a rogue-ish disposition. As he heads the cast with his trademark charisma, the role of Dirk Pitt seems natural for him. His co-star, Steve Zahn, steals the show as Al Giordino, Dirk's friend from childhood. Penelope Cruz also co-stars as the smart and sassy Eva Rojas, a doctor working for the World Health Organization.\nhttps://www.cri.be/sites/default/files/inlineimages/who.jpg\n*You can make the joke in your own heads.*\n\nThere are also impressive supporting performances from William H. Macy, *The Office*'s Rainn Wilson, and Lennie James, of *The Walking Dead* fame. \n\nThe first thing to know about this movie is that it is a fun action romp all the way, taking cues from *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* in regards of exotic setting, impressive action set pieces, and memorable characters. As a viewer, you feel the movie encouraging you to sit back and enjoy yourself with a story that's solid, but doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, while there are a few solemn moments in the movie, you'll find that the tone is almost always an uplifting one, like Marvel's *Guardians of the Galaxy*.\nhttps://i.ytimg.com/vi/vzSzhBX24ls/hqdefault.jpg\n*But not that similar*\n\nThe story revolves around Dirk and his search for a Civil War ironclad battleship in Africa (remember how I said not to take it too seriously?) At the same time, Cruz's Eva Rojas' attempt to find the source of a sickness on the coast of Africa. Their paths converge as they enter Mali, and soon find that their goals are not so separate as one would believe.\nhttp://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/img/2005/ep33/sahara01.jpg\n*Although it's not an easy journey.*\nThe major selling point of this movie has to be the chemistry between Zahn and McConaughey. The viewer gets the impression of a lifetime of history and friendship between two guys who are highly trained, ex-Navy divers, who are also best friends. The character of Eva Rojas isn't really a compelling one, and her relationship with the protagonist is obvious from the moment you look at the poster. The plot isn't Jason Bourne or Inception, and you'll never hear anyone saying that *Sahara* is one of the great American adventure classics. But the charm of a cast that genuinely seems to enjoy the film, coupled with snappy dialogue and a sense of history and care between all the characters allow this movie to shine among other treasure hunting B-movies.       "body": "Hello, Reader.\nI recently treated myself once again to the cinematic experience that is *The Lord of the Rings*.  I have to say that even though I've watched it a truly unreasonable number of times, I always seem to pull a new lesson from the seminal Jackson masterpiece. With that in mind, my last viewing has given me a couple of interesting thoughts on life in general, aside from the obvious ones like the importance of friendship and the triumph of good over evil. And since I've loved this story since I was too small for my mother to let me see the Ring wraiths, I have decided to dedicate an article to the new stories that I found within Middle Earth.\n\n**Your family doesn't define you**\nSomething that we see a lot of is the idea of choosing your own fate, and avoiding those laid out by those before you; particularly in the case of your family. This concept is shown most clearly in the case of Aragorn, the stoic, stubble faced ranger.\nhttps://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/lotr/images/b/b6/Aragorn_profile.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170121121423\n*When he isn't brooding, he's cutting glass with his jawline*\nThe motivation for his character is that he is running from the failure of his ancestor, Isildur, who is failed to destroy the Ring, and is responsible for the situation before the Fellowship. This is why we find Aragorn in the medieval equivalent of a dive bar at the beginning of the film; because he's afraid of making the same mistakes his forefathers did, and feels that by sharing their blood, he shares their weakness. It takes a reborn, bleached Wizard to convince Aragorn that he's not destined for failure.\nhttps://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/lotr/images/3/35/Arwen_sword.PNG\n*Alongside one of the most under-appreciated characters in modern cinema*\n\nThe lesson that I feel we can take from this is that no matter what your family is like, you have the choice to be something different and new, for good or bad. You can choose to break the tradition and be the first person in your family to get a college education. Or perhaps to be the first to volunteer for a cause that's unpopular at home.\n\n**It's never too late to do the right thing**\nAnother member of the Fellowship is the Gondorian Captain Boromir, played by Sean \"Why do I die in all my parts\" Bean. After Frodo goes invisible and trips Boromir, the Gondorian captain snaps out of it, and promptly kills like, 30 orcs to save the two least important people in the group. Even though he'd made an awful mistake, which had nearly doomed the quest, he had not been intentionally hurtful, and gave a truly heroic sacrifice. It occurs to me that I could learn to give those around me grace for their mistakes, or even their willful misdeeds. You never know when someone will surprise you by doing something extraordinary.\n**A relationship is at its best when both are willing to sacrifice.**\nBack to Aragorn, everyone's favorite grizzled ranger with self-esteem issues. So Aragorn is in a relationship with Arwen, the princess of the elves. Since she is elvish, she lives a long time.       "body": "So it's come to this. I'm standing outside a nice theater with my 11 year old brother and trying to get in to see _Cars 3_. I look through the glass partition that separates the ticket booth attendant from the clamoring public, which is  reminiscent of the visiting room at your local prison. They've got the phone and everything. So this intern on loan from the local high school raises his droopy eyelids enough to make some semblance of eye contact and manages to ask which movie my pet telly tubby and I are here to see. I inform him that I'd like two tickets to see the _Cars 3_ movie that started five minutes ago, because I could have left home an hour early, but would still have shown up five minutes late. The attendant mumbles something resembling a question concerning whether I want the movie in 3D and my breath catches in my throat.\n_3D._\nThe gimmick that doesn't seem to die, milking the few willing moviegoers of both their  money and youthful joy at the pleasure of the movie-going experience like a chupacabra on a Mexican goat. I summon up all my conviction, and manage to squeeze what I hope sounds like a confident \"Of course\" from between my suddenly dry lips. The disinterested attendant looks from me to his screen, and his eyes widen marginally as though he might be awakening for the first time this evening, waiting in anticipation for my next move. He conjures a queasy half-smile and says: \"$26.21, sir.\"\nSparks dance across my vision as his eyes lock to mine, and I pray that my resolve holds as I repeat the phrase to myself in the vain hope that my repetition will somehow decrease the fact that I'm paying nearly 30 dollars to watch Larry the Cable guy pretend he's a tow truck.\nhttps://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/disney/images/e/ee/Mater.png/revision/latest?cb=20150123144134\n*I'm onto you, you bucktoothed twit.*\n\nSo for all of you who may find yourselves suckered into the same trap as I was, I made this handy guide to the emotions that will flash through your head as you make your defeated way through the lobby, past posters full of promise of intrigue and adventure, and know that you will never see them, because you'll have to start working two jobs to make ends meet after this unholy extravagance.\n**Stage 1: Denial**\nYour first response may be to chuckle at what must be a jest on the part of the employee behind the glass, which makes more sense the longer this situation drags on.  Surely, no sane member of society would charge such an exorbitant price. Your wallet will surely not be taxed to such an extreme. But slowly you begin to see the terrible truth manifest itself as you see no light of humor behind the drooping, dull expression plastered all over the face of this acne ridden tormentor.\n**Stage 2: Anger**\nAnd who does Larry the Cable guy think he is anyway? That man's as funny as a pile of dead clowns. Furthermore, Owen Wilson was never even a worthwhile actor, and his voice is stupid. The last contribution he made to society was when he worked with Jackie Chan and nobody came to see him anyway. The whole institution is rigged! Rigged against the little guy who just wants to be a slightly less crappy brother than earlier and now if I turn around I'm the guy that said \"we can't do that\" again.\n**Stage 3: Bargaining**\nOkay. I'm a smart guy. I'm a marketing major. I can make the best of this. I bet this movie will be so hideous I'll be forced to demand my money back! Plus interest! This braces-faced neophyte won't know what hit him when I charge victorious back out to the booth to demand the return of my hard-earned funds, due to the fact that Pixar's just phoning it in with the Cars franchise anyway. I'll be vindicated and will have maintained my self respect, which is the most important part here, anyway.\n**Stage 4: Depression**\nI'm not going to ask for my money back. I'm weak and timid, and even if it's Larry the Cable guy standing up on stage and telling bad puns for two hours I'll still probably shuffle out to my car as if I'm scared some Kafkaesque Big Brother will sense my rebellious discontent and rain down fire and shame upon my bent frame. The Cars movie will be awful, my brother will love it, I'll wind up broke and alone, while the quarterback that bullied me in 6th grade will become a millionaire and wind up married to a supermodel.\nhttps://usatftw.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/d01-bundchen-and-brady.jpg?w=1000&h=600&crop=1\n*Just look at him. __LOOK AT HIM__*\n\n**Stage 5: Acceptance**\nI guess at the end of the day, what I remember won't be the expense, but the time I get to spend with my little brother. That's something priceless. Look at that smile on his face as he slaps on those stupid glasses! Pixar still does those short films? I always forget about those! Man, _Paperman_ was an amazing, well crafted experience!Oh! This one's about a Lost and Found bin! That's just great! I bet Larry the Cable Guy's not even in this one, and proceeds will go to those lovable scamps over at Pixar! And while the lesson has been difficult, I have learned it well.
