I don’t think I could ever earn it.” \n\n“You’re damned right,” rumbled Simon. “Our Mattie isn’t someone we can just *forgive* you for taking.”  \n\nNecristo nodded, brow furrowed in clear pain. \n\n“May I ask something, then?”\n\nWhen no-one objected, the blond man pushed his chair back, stepped behind it, and prostrated himself, pressing his fringe straight into the floor.\n\n“Oh, come off it,” groaned Matthias. “Get up, Necristo.” \n\n“I know that I’ll never be worthy of your daughter,” said Necristo, “and I’ve harmed your family enough already. I understand that. I’ll leave. Right after this. Just, please, let me speak to Anne one last time.”\n\n“Well, no-one’s asking you to,” said Simon, acutely and audibly uncomfortable. “Leave, that is. Get up, will you? We’re not gods.” \n\nBut it was Lizzie who stood and raised him, cupping his chin in her hand and staring straight up into his eyes, as if she were sinking an anchor deep into his soul. \n\n“Young man,” she said, “don’t you ever *dare* say that you’re not worthy of my Anne. I won’t have it.” \n\n“But…”\n\n“No buts,” said Lizzie. “She went back to see you, we let her go, and we all knew she might never come back here again. *She* thought you were worthy. Are you calling our Anne a liar, Necristo? A fool?”\n\n“Well, she does lie,” muttered Matthias, only to receive a hearty cuff from his brother. \n\n“If you want our little hellcat, Necristo,” bellowed Simon, jumping out of his chair, “you can have her! You gave up your immortality, didn’t you? A myriad lifetimes? That’s far more time than she’ll ever have for you!”  \n\nNecristo took Lizzie’s hands and lowered them gently. He was shaking, eyes closed, but on his face was a smile as fragile and bright as a sunbeam. \n\n“Honestly,” he laughed, “I do think she is a fool. A fool for wanting me, and a fool for going back for me, and a fool for giving you a good impression of me. But if… you’ll have me…”\n\n“…Because you’re something like the pox, of course, and you don’t want to infect too many people while you’re at it…” \n\n“Anne!” howled Simon at a rather alarming pitch, and ran to sweep her in his arms. She laughed and kissed his beard. \n\n“Hello, Da. Hello, Ma.” \n\n“I don’t remember you having that dress,” said Lizzie, but her eyes were shining.  \n\nAnne slipped to the ground and dusted herself off.   \n\n“You could call it a gift from myself to myself,” she said. “With a parting jab or two, of course, and a promise to meet again when I least expect it.”\n\n“That’s… your dream-dress,” said Necristo. “Isn’t it?”\n\n“Don’t tell me you stalked my dreams, too,” Anne hissed, eyes narrowed. \n\n“I didn’t,” said Necristo, tilting his head in dismay. “Nothing looks like that. Nothing earthly, anyway. And I did see it, remember? We were having pancakes.” \n\n“We… were,” conceded Anne.\n\nNecristo untilted his head and began, very deliberately, to smile. Anne went red.\n\n“B-But it’s not like you’re meant to remember that anyway,” she huffed, clutching her arms to her chest, “so there!”  \n\nBut it was true. She was wearing the green dress she had seen in that wardrobe all those days ago, as weightless as light through glass, which she had clutched on her fall through the sky and seen hanging from Annabel’s own shoulders. \n\n“Well, I do tend to remember these things,” beamed Necristo. “Except when I forget.” \n\n“This is going to be a fantastic courtship,” said Matthias. “Keep the daggers ready. Matilda, I know you’re there, so why don’t you…” \n\nHis jaw went completely slack, but by the time he was able to master his own mouth and clamp his teeth back together, she was already standing in front of him, arms folded. \n\n“What?” demanded Matilda. “Not ragged enough for your liking, cousin?” \n\nUnlike Anne, her shoulders were covered entirely with a lace shawl, and her dress was as understated as her dry looks. It was white with a simple, unpretentious hem and a black-buttoned blouse. A ribbon, black with silver edges, tied back her hair in a bun, so that a stray strand hung down to touch her wrinkled cheek like snow. \n\n“It could use a bit more decoration,” managed Matthias at last. \n\n“And this is what I get for tying back my hair,” remarked Matilda. “Hello, Elizabeth. I’m sorry to tell you this, but I’m not *your* sister specifically, so…”\n\nA patter of feet, a squeak of toes and the clap of a tight embrace. \n\n“It doesn’t matter,” choked Lizzie. “It doesn’t matter at all. You’re not her, but you’re still… you’re still my sister. And I… oh, I’ve wanted to see you for so long, Mattie…” \n\n Matilda stared down at her sister’s shoulder, pursed her trembling lips together, then broke down and began to sob like a child. \n\n<center>#####</center>\n\nIf there was anything stranger, hypothetically, than a wedding between a former sorcerer and a farmgirl, perhaps it would be a wedding between two aged cousins, neither of whom was strictly related to the other. But these strange events did occur in due course, although not on the same day, and not in the same fashion, and most certainly not with the same effects. \n\nThere were children, for one thing, for the younger couple, a beautiful boy and a dashing girl, the former of whom could speak at one and the latter of whom could ride at two. This was generally agreed to be something very magical. \n\n“I wouldn’t count on it too much,” the delighted father was heard to say one day. “Magic isn’t all that important in the grand scheme of things. As a matter of fact, love…” \n\n“His heart’s weak,” announced the mother promptly. “And it’s not even him the children crawl over.”\n\nThe aged couple, now very satisfied with their ability to argue with each other on a daily basis, made a few curt remarks on the travails of parenting. \n\n“But you will be my godparents, won’t you?” asked the three-year-old boy. \n\n“Can’t complain,” said the older lady.\n\n“I can,” said the older man. “Why did it take so long, anyway?” \n\n“Well,” said the father, “we had to ask him, didn’t we? But first we had to explain it to him, and well…”\n\n“Dada,” said the two-year-old daughter, scrambling for an imaginary pony and promptly falling over. The mother picked her up and began, begrudgingly, to fuss. \n\n“I understand,” said the boy. “Magic isn’t that strong anyway.” \n\n“I’m magic,” said the older lady. \n\n“So am I,” said the older man. “Do you want me to send you straight to your bed again?” \n\n“That’s the thing,” said the boy. “You’re both magic, and you’re both grumpy all the time. If you didn’t love each other, there’s no way you could stay together. Same with Ma and Da. Ma’s magic, and Da isn’t. Love is stronger than magic, isn’t it?” \n\nThere was a general silence at this. \n\n“That’s right,” blinked the mother. “You’re absolutely right.” \n\n“I sure wish I knew how magic felt,” said the father very loudly, to the acclaim of absolutely no-one. His wife reached over, kicked him lightly in the left shin, then pecked him on the cheek. Their daughter whined and squirmed. \n\n“Can it, Mr. Sorcerer.” \n\nA smile, a caress, and a full kiss in return. \n\n“Yes, Miss Gentilberry.”",

Anne looked at Annabel and raised the other eyebrow. Annabel looked back and raised both eyebrows. \n\n\"I mean,\" she said, \"you aren't going to introduce yourself to your sister and her husband in those rags, are you, Matilda?\" \n\nMatilda looked down at her bandaged hands, sniffed her knuckles dubiously, then dusted her left shoulder off. A coating of fine gray ash puffed from her cloak like soot from a powder-puff. \n\n\"I happen to like these rags, thank you very much.”\n\n“And if you want to keep wearing them, Aunt Mattie,” said Anne abruptly, “we’ll need to give those things a good wringing. I don’t care how magical they are. Annabel, get me something nice.” \n\n“I am *far* too old for this,” grumbled Matilda, even as Anne jumped and a crazy-quilt torrent of dresses exploded into the room. \n\n“Annabel!” she yelled. \n\n“What?” retorted her other self, seemingly just as put-out. “This stuff is what you like!”    \n\n“I was talking about Aunt Mattie!” flailed Anne, picking her feet out from the cascade of clothes.\n\n“You think I can read minds? I’m just a sorceress!” \n\n“And *I’m* a farmgirl, so do better!” \n\nMatilda picked up a cotton plaid dress, wrinkled her nose, then folded her arms and sighed. \n\n“And to think I actually wanted to meet you back then. Annabel, here’s what I’ll need. Listen up.” \n\n“Of course, Matilda.”\n\nAnnabel glared one last dagger at her other self, then put her hands together and grinned at her other Aunt. Anne turned aside in a huff, considered her response while contemplating a black-white slip on the wall, then spun right back and stuck out her tongue. \n\n<center>#####</center>\n\n“You’re back from Heltria?” said Simon Gentilberry, shifting in surprise. “I didn’t hear you come…”\n\nThe massive man fell completely silent. Behind him, Lizzie Gentilberry stood with her hand at her mouth, porridge bowl forgotten in front of her, half on the table and half off it, sending wisps of steam up before her wrinkled hand.\n\n“Hi,” said Necristo, biting his lip. “I’m Necristo. I… believe I’ve caused you a lot of trouble, for which I apologize. Did I mention that your daughter saved my life?” \n\n“There are… things we have to settle,” said Matthias. “I haven’t been here for you like I should have, Simon. Holing myself up in that cabin was the worst thing I could have done, and I did it. And Mother…” \n\n“Excuse me, Matt. I hear you, and gods know I’m glad you’re saying it, but you have to give me a moment. Just one.”\n\nSimon Gentilberry pushed his chair back as daintily as he could, stood, and clapped his gigantic hand on Necristo’s shoulder. \n\n“You don’t look anything like my girl said you would,” he frowned. “Like a scared white rabbit, she said. Sure you aren’t an impostor?” \n\n“Ah, yes,” said Necristo. “I mean, no. I mean…” \n\n“Don’t hit the boy like that,” said Lizzie, “you’ll snap his collarbone. Take a seat, won’t you? Heavens know I'll have to.” \n\nNecristo flicked his eyes down, grinned nervously, waited for Simon to retract his arm, then made his way to the closest chair and placed himself gingerly within. Lizzie did the same, settling into her chair like a sibyl. \n\n“If I have to explain the situation,” said Necristo, a pensive light in his sapphire eyes, “perhaps I’ll start from the beginning. You have to know everything about me, all three of you.”\n\n“And why is that?” asked Lizzie. Her hands were folded in front of her, guarded as an eyrie in some inaccessible crag.\n\nNecristo swallowed. Simon clapped his arm around Matthias’ back and leaned in. \n\n“Because I caused you great grief by taking Matilda. Because I stole your daughter with no right to do so, and because now, at this present moment, I am no longer a sorcerer. I can forget, and I can die. You will understand me when I say I do not wish to tempt Fate.” \n\nThe silence was so thick, it was settling on the porridge. \n\n“I suppose you’ll have to talk, then,” said Simon at last, clapping his hands together and leaning away from his brother. Matthias straightened up, then nodded. Lizzie pursed her lips, but said nothing. Her cheeks were drawn and taut, as if she were holding something in her mouth, something she had kept for years but was only now beginning to taste. \n\n“Thank you,” said Necristo, and then, after a while: \n\n“It begins with my mother, I suppose.”",

Anne looked at Annabel and raised the other eyebrow. Annabel looked back and raised both eyebrows. \n\n\"I mean,\" she said, \"you aren't going to introduce yourself to your sister and her husband in those rags, are you, Matilda?\" \n\nMatilda looked down at her bandaged hands, sniffed her knuckles dubiously, then dusted her left shoulder off. A coating of fine gray ash puffed from her cloak like soot from a powder-puff. \n\n\"I happen to like these rags, thank you very much.”\n\n“And if you want to keep wearing them, Aunt Mattie,” said Anne abruptly, “we’ll need to give those things a good wringing. I don’t care how magical they are. Annabel, get me something nice.” \n\n“I am *far* too old for this,” grumbled Matilda, even as Anne jumped and a crazy-quilt torrent of dresses exploded into the room. \n\n“Annabel!” she yelled. \n\n“What?” retorted her other self, seemingly just as put-out. “This stuff is what you like!”    \n\n“I was talking about Aunt Mattie!” flailed Anne, picking her feet out from the cascade of clothes.\n\n“You think I can read minds? I’m just a sorceress!” \n\n“And *I’m* a farmgirl, so do better!” \n\nMatilda picked up a cotton plaid dress, wrinkled her nose, then folded her arms and sighed. \n\n“And to think I actually wanted to meet you back then. Annabel, here’s what I’ll need. Listen up.” \n\n“Of course, Matilda.”\n\nAnnabel glared one last dagger at her other self, then put her hands together and grinned at her other Aunt. Anne turned aside in a huff, considered her response while contemplating a black-white slip on the wall, then spun right back and stuck out her tongue. \n\n<center>#####</center>\n\n“You’re back from Heltria?” said Simon Gentilberry, shifting in surprise. “I didn’t hear you come…”\n\nThe massive man fell completely silent. Behind him, Lizzie Gentilberry stood with her hand at her mouth, porridge bowl forgotten in front of her, half on the table and half off it, sending wisps of steam up before her wrinkled hand.\n\n“Hi,” said Necristo, biting his lip. “I’m Necristo. I… believe I’ve caused you a lot of trouble, for which I apologize. Did I mention that your daughter saved my life?” \n\n“There are… things we have to settle,” said Matthias. “I haven’t been here for you like I should have, Simon. Holing myself up in that cabin was the worst thing I could have done, and I did it. And Mother…” \n\n“Excuse me, Matt. I hear you, and gods know I’m glad you’re saying it, but you have to give me a moment. Just one.”\n\nSimon Gentilberry pushed his chair back as daintily as he could, stood, and clapped his gigantic hand on Necristo’s shoulder. \n\n“You don’t look anything like my girl said you would,” he frowned. “Like a scared white rabbit, she said. Sure you aren’t an impostor?” \n\n“Ah, yes,” said Necristo. “I mean, no. I mean…” \n\n“Don’t hit the boy like that,” said Lizzie, “you’ll snap his collarbone. Take a seat, won’t you?” \n\nNecristo flicked his eyes down, grinned nervously, waited for Simon to retract his arm, then made his way to the closest chair and placed himself gingerly within. \n\n“If I have to explain the situation,” he said, a pensive light in his sapphire eyes, “perhaps I’ll start from the beginning. You have to know everything about me, all three of you.”\n\n“And why is that?” asked Lizzie. Her hands were folded in front of her, guarded as an eyrie in some inaccessible crag.\n\nNecristo swallowed. Simon clapped his arm around Matthias’ back and leaned in. \n\n“Because I caused you great grief by taking Matilda. Because I stole your daughter with no right to do so, and because now, at this present moment, I am no longer a sorcerer. I can forget, and I can die. You will understand me when I say I do not wish to tempt Fate.” \n\nThe silence was so thick, it was settling on the porridge. \n\n“I suppose you’ll have to talk, then,” said Simon at last, clapping his hands together and leaning away from his brother. Matthias straightened up, then nodded. Lizzie pursed her lips, but said nothing. Her cheeks were drawn and taut, as if she were holding something in her mouth, something she had kept for years but was only now beginning to taste. \n\n“Thank you,” said Necristo, and then, after a while: \n\n“It begins with my mother, I suppose.”",

You'll sacrifice your heart and wish to lose your immortality.”\n\nNecristo rubbed his brow and nodded gratefully. \n\n“I've wronged all of you in some way or another. If I hadn't taken your Matilda, then none of this would have happened to any of you.”\n\n“I wouldn't have spent five years of my life trying to find this world,” said Matthias.\n\n“And I wouldn't have…” frowned Matilda. “Well, I was under the impression that it was all my fault, but I suppose you can take some of the blame if you want to.”\n\n“And our Matilda would still be alive,\" said Necristo quietly.\n\nThere was a general silence at this. A wind rustled up from nowhere, sending the ash up and around in slow circles, like dust on a dead-end road. History hung in the air like a curse.\n\n“No, no, no!” stormed Anne, bristling like a thunderstorm, sweeping the silence aside like a furious broom. “None of that is happening!”\n\n“Anne…” said Matilda. \n\n“Aunt Mattie, I don't know what happened with the other you, but Necristo loved her. He wanted her to love him back, but she didn't. How is that something he has to be punished for?”\n\n“I loved her too,” said Matthias. “Doesn’t that count for anything?” \n\n“It… it does,” spluttered Anne helplessly, “but…” \n\nNecristo looked straight across at her, his red eyes full of compassion, and at last she put her hands together and fell silent. \n\n“It does count for something,” said the sorcerer. “You came to save your cousin, Matthias, just like you’ve come to save your niece. That’s more than I ever did for either of them.”\n\n“Don’t forget me,” said Matilda. “Not that I’m thanking you or anything, mind you.”\n\nNecristo smiled sadly, then said to Matthias:\n\n“I’ve never had the courage to love. Not truly. I’m not as brave as you.” \n\nMatthias winced in discomfort, looked down at the gray ground, rubbed his arm, and at last ground out: \n\n“You did, but you clearly forgot about it.” \n\n“You sent Anne away because you were scared of me, weren’t you?” asked Matilda. \n\nNecristo glanced back. Anne was staring at him, her eyes blazing like a needled cat’s, just daring him to make one more wrong move. \n\n“I suppose I might have, yes,” he said at last, cautiously. \n\n“And if she was willing enough to come back and face down your mother with a rusty knife,” said Matthias, “what does that say about who you really are?” \n\nNecristo fell silent, his face as slack as a strip of red linen. Behind him, Anne fumed, tapped her feet one after the other, folded her arms, and at last said: \n\n“Look, Necristo, you’re a spineless sack of fairy dust.” \n\n“I suppose I am,” said Necristo. \n\n“A big honking pansy is what you are.”\n\n“That does sound accurate,” said Necristo. \n\n“I could probably knock you out with a handful of porridge and you’d still say sorry.”\n\n“Sorry,” said Necristo, and then, “Oh.” \n\nAnne sighed. \n\n“But for all that, there’s still some part inside of you that’s soft and kind, even though you’re so old. Some part that’s, well, like a down pillow. You have all the power in the world, but you’re still a gentleman… even if you did kidnap me.” \n\n“For which I apologize,” said Necristo. \n\n“Please don’t,” said Anne. “I probably deserved it, anyway.” \n\nAnd she walked up and kissed Necristo right on the lips, craning up on the tips of her red-toed shoes.    \n\nMatthias and Matilda looked at each other. \n\n“Great,” said Matilda. “Just great.”\n\n“I agree,” said Matthias. “Now he *has* to stab himself.” \n\n“No-one is stabbing anyone, especially themselves!” yelled Anne, red-faced. “Well, Necristo?” \n\nNecristo stood there, blinking, looking thoroughly bamboozled. \n\n“I… I must confess, Miss Gentilberry, I’m almost curious to see what I’ve forgotten.” \n\n“Not an answer,” warned Anne. \n\n“It’s not just you, Miss Gentilberry,” said Necristo. “I’ve forgotten so much more. How to be with people, how to live without my sorcery. The fear of death, the feeling of life. Now that Mother is gone…”\n\n“And may she rot in whatever redundant Hell there is for phantasms…” added Matthias.  \n\n“I’d… I’d like to experience it again. Life. With you,” said Necristo. “If you’ll have me, I mean. We were only together for a few weeks, which I can’t exactly remember, but if you can bear with me enough to start again…” \n\n“I just gave you my first kiss in front of my Aunt *and* Uncle!” wailed Anne. “What do you *think*?” \n\n“I think you’re very kind,” said Necristo. “Far more than I deserve, at any rate. If you will, Miss Gentilberry?” \n\nAnne stared down at Woewarder, eyes still wet with indignation. \n\n“If I do this,” she said, “you’ll die. Not now, but eventually. Maybe you’ll be so old you can hardly think. Maybe you’ll just break your leg in a bad spot. I… I can’t say I’m worth that, Necristo. I sulk and I… fuss and I make a whole lot of noise over nothing…” \n\nNecristo touched her cheek, gingerly, as if stroking a broken leaf. She looked at him and realized he was crying. \n\n“Miss Gentilberry,” he said, “I can still remember most of what happened before I met you, and I can tell you very clearly that I wanted to die. What I did to Matilda…”\n\n“I know,” said Anne miserably. “You told me. Don’t cry, you idiot, you’ll make me…” \n\n“If you’ll forgive me,” said Necristo, “and if you’ll be good enough to have me, then I think I’ll be able to live. Death doesn’t even factor into it.” \n\nHe looked back at the other two, plaintively. Matthias glared at him, shifted his weight from foot to foot, then grumbled: \n\n“Ah, get over yourself. I’ve cut logs with more backbone than you. Lose the sorcery, I say. It’ll be enough of a punishment, and then we can get to working out our differences. Like real men.” \n\n“Thank you,” said Necristo. “Thank you so much.”\n\nHe shifted his gaze to Matilda. The scarecrow woman folded her arms.\n\n“Listen, Necristo. I heard it from your hag of a mother, so I guess I can tell it to you straight: you didn’t kill the other me. I thought you did, and you think you did, but we were both wrong. I’m sorry. I only wish I could give her the hair-twisting she deserved.” ”\n\n“But I was the one who kidnapped the other you, so…”\n\n“And I’ve done a whole host of terrible things in my life,” said Matilda, ”so if you shut up about it and just go with me, I’ll have one less thing to worry about.”\n\n“Aunt Mattie!” cried Anne, overjoyed. “You’re really coming with us?”\n\n“Well, I don’t have much choice, do I?” she retorted. “The clan will never let me hear the end of it, and besides, I need to make sure that lover-boy here doesn’t accidentally abduct one of your cows or something.”\n\n“I don’t think there’s much chance of that,” said Necristo. \n\n“With any luck,” said Matilda, “there won’t be. Give me the knife. Anne doesn’t know how to use it anyway.”\n\nWhen Necristo hesitated, she walked over, gesturing as she did with three fingers. Woewarder floated from Necristo’s hands and landed in her bandaged palm like an obedient child. \n\n“Sorcerer Necristo, what do you sacrifice?” she asked. “What do you offer for your heart’s desire?” \n\n“I give my heart and all my power,” said Necristo, bowing his head.\n\n“And what do you wish to gain in return?” \n\n“I wish for a heart of flesh and not of magic. A true life followed by a true death, graced with the hand of Anne Gentilberry.”\n\nMatilda raised an eyebrow.\n\n“That last one isn’t up to you,” she said. “You’ll have to ask her parents, for one thing.” \n\n“Nix it,” piped in Anne from behind. “We can talk later.”  \n\n“I suppose I shall, then,” said Necristo. “Nix it, that is. Is there anything else we have to do?”\n\n“Not really,” said Matilda, and stabbed him in the chest.",

Not of her, but of himself. Desperately afraid that if he stayed for one more unbearable day, she would really end her life as she had threatened, and he would be left alone with nothing but her curse. He had left his world, followed the scout from Skalathos because he had been afraid. Afraid that his mother's magic would find him, even after all those years, bind his arms and bring him back to her. The city had not wiped her from his mind. \n\nAnd even in those long years of study, that bitter solitary century where he toiled in silence over the arcane tomes and raw tubs of soulstuff, his mother had stayed at his shoulder like a scorching sunbeam. Even though she was dead, nothing but bones a thousand worlds away. His distance only made her closer. \n\nWhen he graduated, a weakling with the power to make his every thought a reality, it was only natural for her memory to clothe itself in magic and become a phantasm. Seeing her from the corner of his eye, hearing her voice in every blade of grass, he began to seek the company of women. Too cowardly to change himself, he stole farmgirls and maidens from plane after plane, in the hopes that one of them would somehow help him banish his mother. That one of them would replace his mother.\n\nAnne hadn't replaced Mother. Anne had stabbed Mother. Shame, isn't it? That the only thing it led to was destruction.\"       \n\nHe placed his hand on hers, cupping it around Woewarder's worn ridged hilt. She stiffened, but at last decided not to move.  \n\n\"We have another chance now,\" he said. \"Anne's here.\"\n\nIt was like he was peeling away from himself. As if years of doubt, of uncertainty were falling away like flesh from a wound. He pulled Woewarder from his warm chest, and it came free and unsullied, sliding from his waistcoat like a beam of pure white light.\n\n\"You remember her name now,\" said Matilda. \n\nNecristo turned and blinked. Anne was standing there, hand over her mouth, green eyes brimming with wonder. \n\n\"Your eyes,\" she said. \"They're...\"\n\nNecristo touched the side of his head, looking at his golden locks in a moment of confusion. His whole body felt different, as if he had been reduced to the ghost of a shadow of his former self - but there was a wonderful feeling to the weakness, as if by giving up all his power, he had finally let go of all his burdens. As if by inviting death, he had found life. \n\n\"Well,\" he said, \"I can't actually remember what color my eyes were, Anne, so I suppose you'll have to tell me. This flesh-and-blood heart is quite handy, if I may say so myself. I can remember you, for one, and...\"\n\n\"Okay, never mind,\" said Anne, \"the world's melting.\"\n\nNecristo looked down at the soulstuff pooling rapidly beneath him. The dark sky itself was running over with light, dripping and falling in great globules that splashed like meteorites.  \n\n\"So it is,\" he said. \"I must say, I didn't think this far ahead. Matthias, Matilda, when will the next planesgate pass by here?\"      \n \n\"Two hours,\" said Matilda, lifting her foot and wobbling slightly. \"Unless the master gatefinder here can see something I don't. Nice eyes, incidentally. Very blue.\" \n\n\"A real bouquet,\" said Matthias, without the slightest hint of charity. \"Beautiful. I can't see a gate for miles. This may be the end.\" \n\n\"Well,\" grinned Anne, \"it definitely is the end. Just... a happier one.\"\n\nMatthias, Matilda and Necristo snapped around to stare at her. Anne scowled, hand over her mouth.\n\n\"What?\" she demanded. \"That wasn't me!\" \n\n\"It certainly wasn't,\" said Annabel, stepping out from nowhere and introducing the planesgate behind her with a flourish. \"Fantastic show, by the way. The clan will love this. Now, you might want to come through here before your world collapses, Necristo. Or, well, your former world. Did I mention I majored in Planar Travel and Doppelganger Theory?\"\n\nNecristo looked at Annabel, then back at Anne.\n\n\"Two Annes,\" he said. \n\n\"Don't act like it's some kind of curse, you idiot!\" howled Anne. \"Get in!\" \n\nAnd with that, she splashed through the soulstuff and shoved her paramour right through the rectangle of shimmering violet. Matilda and Matthias looked at each other, sighed in unison, and followed.  \n\n\"It'll be good to go home,\" muttered Matthias.\n\n\"It'll be good to *have* a home,\" replied Matilda, equally surly. \n\n\"I think the both of you are just *adorable*,\" beamed Annabel. \"Now, who wants to tell me what happened to Yhaga?\"\n\n\"It's complicated,\" said all four at once, even as the planesgate closed behind them.",

If I hadn't taken your Matilda, then none of this would have happened to any of you.”\n\n“I wouldn't have spent five years of my life trying to find this world,” said Matthias.\n\n“And I wouldn't have…” frowned Matilda. “Well, I was under the impression that it was all my fault, but I suppose you can take some of the blame if you want to.”\n\n“And our Matilda would still be alive,\" said Necristo quietly.\n\nThere was a general silence at this. A wind rustled up from nowhere, sending the ash up and around in slow circles, like dust on a dead-end road. History hung in the air like a curse.\n\n“No, no, no!” stormed Anne, bristling like a thunderstorm, sweeping the silence aside like a furious broom. “None of that is happening!”\n\n“Anne…” said Matilda. \n\n“Aunt Mattie, I don't know what happened with the other you, but Necristo loved her. He wanted her to love him back, but she didn't. How is that something he has to be punished for?”\n\n“I loved her too,” said Matthias. “Doesn’t that count for anything?” \n\n“It… it does,” spluttered Anne helplessly, “but…” \n\nNecristo looked straight across at her, his red eyes full of compassion, and at last she put her hands together and fell silent. \n\n“It does count for something,” said the sorcerer. “You came to save your cousin, Matthias, just like you’ve come to save your niece. That’s more than I ever did for either of them.”\n\n“Don’t forget me,” said Matilda. “Not that I’m thanking you or anything, mind you.”\n\nNecristo smiled sadly, then said to Matthias:\n\n“I’ve never had the courage to love. Not truly. I’m not as brave as you.” \n\nMatthias winced in discomfort, looked down at the gray ground, rubbed his arm, and at last ground out: \n\n“You did, but you clearly forgot about it.” \n\n“You sent Anne away because you were scared of me, weren’t you?” asked Matilda. \n\nNecristo glanced back. Anne was staring at him, her eyes blazing like a needled cat’s, just daring him to make one more wrong move. \n\n“I suppose I might have, yes,” he said at last, cautiously. \n\n“And if she was willing enough to come back and face down your mother with a rusty knife,” said Matthias, “what does that say about who you really are?” \n\nNecristo fell silent, his face as slack as a strip of red linen. Behind him, Anne fumed, tapped her feet one after the other, folded her arms, and at last said: \n\n“Look, Necristo, you’re a spineless sack of fairy dust.” \n\n“I suppose I am,” said Necristo. \n\n“A big honking pansy is what you are.”\n\n“That does sound accurate,” said Necristo. \n\n“I could probably knock you out with a handful of porridge and you’d still say sorry.”\n\n“Sorry,” said Necristo, and then, “Oh.” \n\nAnne sighed. \n\n“But for all that, there’s still some part inside of you that’s soft and kind, even though you’re so old. Some part that’s, well, like a down pillow. You have all the power in the world, but you’re still a gentleman… even if you did kidnap me.” \n\n“For which I apologize,” said Necristo. \n\n“Please don’t,” said Anne. “I probably deserved it, anyway.” \n\nAnd she walked up and kissed Necristo right on the lips, craning up on the tips of her red-toed shoes.    \n\nMatthias and Matilda looked at each other. \n\n“Great,” said Matilda. “Just great.”\n\n“I agree,” said Matthias. “Now he *has* to stab himself.” \n\n“No-one is stabbing anyone, especially themselves!” yelled Anne, red-faced. “Well, Necristo?” \n\nNecristo stood there, blinking, looking thoroughly bamboozled. \n\n“I… I must confess, Miss Gentilberry, I’m almost curious to see what I’ve forgotten.” \n\n“Not an answer,” warned Anne. \n\n“It’s not just you, Miss Gentilberry,” said Necristo. “I’ve forgotten so much more. How to be with people, how to live without my sorcery. The fear of death, the feeling of life. Now that Mother is gone…”\n\n“And may she rot in whatever redundant Hell there is for phantasms…” added Matthias.  \n\n“I’d… I’d like to experience it again. Life. If you will, Miss Gentilberry?” \n\nAnne stared down at Woewarder, eyes still wet with indignation. \n\n“If I do this,” she said, “you’ll die. Not now, but eventually. Maybe you’ll be so old you can hardly think. Maybe you’ll just break your leg in a bad spot. I… I can’t say I’m worth that, Necristo. I sulk and I… fuss and I make a whole lot of noise over nothing…” \n\nNecristo touched her cheek, gingerly, as if stroking a broken leaf. She looked at him and realized he was crying. \n\n“Miss Gentilberry,” he said, “I can still remember most of what happened before I met you, and I can tell you very clearly that I wanted to die. What I did to Matilda…”\n\n“I know,” said Anne miserably. “You told me. Don’t cry, you idiot, you’ll make me…” \n\n“If you’ll forgive me,” said Necristo, “and if you’ll be good enough to have me, then I think I’ll be able to live. Death doesn’t even factor into it.” \n\nHe looked back at the other two, plaintively. Matthias glared at him, shifted his weight from foot to foot, then grumbled: \n\n“Ah, get over yourself. I’ve cut logs with more backbone than you. Lose the sorcery, I say. It’ll be enough of a punishment, and then we can get to working out our differences. Like real men.” \n\n“Thank you,” said Necristo. “Thank you so much.”\n\nHe shifted his gaze to Matilda. The scarecrow woman folded her arms.\n\n“Listen, Necristo. I heard it from your hag of a mother, so I guess I can tell it to you straight: you didn’t kill the other me. I thought you did, and you think you did, but we were both wrong. I’m sorry. I only wish I could give her the hair-twisting she deserved.” ”\n\n“But I was the one who kidnapped the other you, so…”\n\n“And I’ve done a whole host of terrible things in my life,” said Matilda, ”so if you shut up about it and just go with me, I’ll have one less thing to worry about.”\n\n“Aunt Mattie!” cried Anne, overjoyed. “You’re really coming with us?”\n\n“Well, I don’t have much choice, do I?” she retorted. “The clan will never let me hear the end of it, and besides, I need to make sure that lover-boy here doesn’t accidentally abduct one of your cows or something.”\n\n“I don’t think there’s much chance of that,” said Necristo. \n\n“With any luck,” said Matilda, “there won’t be. Give me the knife. Anne doesn’t know how to use it anyway.”\n\nWhen Necristo hesitated, she walked over, gesturing as she did with three fingers. Woewarder floated from Necristo’s hands and landed in her bandaged palm like an obedient child. \n\n“Sorcerer Necristo, what do you sacrifice?” she asked. “What do you offer for your heart’s desire?” \n\n“I give my heart and all my power,” said Necristo, bowing his head.\n\n“And what do you wish to gain in return?” \n\n“I wish for a heart of flesh and not of magic. A true life followed by a true death, graced with the hand of Anne Gentilberry.”\n\nMatilda raised an eyebrow.\n\n“That last one isn’t up to you,” she said. “You’ll have to ask her parents, for one thing.” \n\n“Nix it,” piped in Anne from behind. “We can talk later.”  \n\n“I suppose I shall, then,” said Necristo. “Nix it, that is. Is there anything else we have to do?”\n\n“Not really,” said Matilda, and stabbed him in the chest.",

She was about to claw out Anne’s eye.\n\nThe scream in Matilda’s throat made its way out as a low groan. She stretched out her hand, reaching, willing her legs to move or her magic to work, begging Woewarder to fly out and strike Yhaga, even if only as a distraction. Even though the only thing the knife could do was curse your flesh in return for one wish. Even though Yhaga already had her greatest wish.\n\nNothing. She was old, too old, and Yhaga’s sorcery was too raw for her. Her legs were like worms beneath her, and her magic festered in her throat. She had already spent it all trying to kill Necristo. \n\n“Don’t-” \n\nA spatter of bright red blood squirted across the starlit field, as pure and virginal as an untouched rose. Anne howled like a shaken cat. Matilda shut her eyes and bit her lip until the taste of wet copper flowed up into her nostrils.\n\n“Uncle Matt!” \n\nMatilda opened her eyes, disbelieving, to see an opal planesgate shimmering right in front of Anne’s nose. Yhaga’s arm was down in it to the elbow, grasped by a man’s bloody hand - but from her shocked grimace, Yhaga was the injured one. \n\n“We’ll be back for you in a little while, girl,” came a gnarled male voice. “Just try not to let your Aunt die, will you?”  \n\nAnne stared up at the inert side of the portal and nodded, mutely. \n\n*“You… you dare?”* stammered Yhaga. *“I’ll…”* \n\nShe made a wild gesture with her left hand, gathering lightning and wind like a whirlpool - then the man’s hand tugged hard and she fell, shrieking, into the shimmering doorway. The vortex fizzled out the instant she went in, and the planesgate winked out.  \n\nMatilda watched helplessly as her niece crawled to her over the ashen grass, pulled her into her arms, and planted a shaking kiss on her leathery cheek. \n\n<center> ##### </center>\n\n“If you hadn’t made yourself corporeal,” said the gnarled man with the cold eyes, “perhaps none of this would have happened.” \n\nNecri was there, staring up at her with those helpless eyes she hated so much. He had the hole from Matilda’s black stiletto in his chest. \n\n*“Not dead yet, Necri?”* said Yhaga. *“You really are remarkable.”*\n\n“This isn’t about him,” said the gnarled man. “I hate him, don’t get me wrong. I was about to throw him at you and make him apologize to Anne, to Mattie - even if what it meant was his death and mine. Fortunately, I tend to rethink my plans very quickly. Do you know how fast the planar epicycles on this world are? It was all I could do to catch your hand.” \n\n*“Stay out of this, gatefinder! You think you can outsmart me? I’ve been planning this since your father was a smear in your grandmother’s loins!”*\n\nShe reached inside herself for that part of him she’d taken and called a wind of blasting death. The gnarled man folded his arms and looked unimpressed. \n\n*“What…?”* \n\nThis wasn’t right. There was no way this could be happening. She had Necri’s sorcery. Her sorcery. Raw power beyond anything this pathetic warlock could ever muster, so why…?\n\n“You should have gone to school,” said the gnarled man, with a sardonic lift of his eyebrow. “If you knew a fraction of the things your son does about the Space Between, I would be dead already.”\n\n*“You… you… Charlatan! Whoreson!”*\n\nShe rushed at him, broken nail bleeding, going straight for his eyes. He shoved her to the ground like a child. \n\n“I don’t hit girls, or women,” he said. “But you? You stopped being human a long time ago.” \n\n*“Necri,”* croaked Yhaga. *“Help me, Necri.”* \n\nThe gnarled man turned, as if to laugh again - but then his eyes lit up in dull alarm.\n\n“Don’t do it,” he said. “Don’t make me kill you, too.” \n\nHer son stood, leaking black blood. Shuffled past the gnarled man, brushed his arm aside and knelt in front of her, his red eyes tender as a freshly skinned hare. \n\n“Mother,” he whispered.\n\nYes. There it was. That pathetic expression. Exactly what she needed to twist this whole mess around, to wring the life from that smug gatefinder’s neck... \n\n*“The knife in my side, Necri,”* she said, keeping her voice low and weak.  *“Take it. Kill him.”* \n\n“Mother, I…” \n\n*“Necri, please. I’m… I’m so sorry. Everything I’ve done… I don’t deserve to be your mother.”* \n\n“I…”\n\nIt was taking all her effort not to shake from sheer mirth, laughter as bitter as lemons in mud. This was the whole reason he’d kept her as a phantasm on his world, wasn’t it? Given her life? To force an apology from her lips, to make her grateful, to make her surrender to him at last? \n\nWell, it wasn’t going to happen. He was useless even as an all-powerful sorcerer, and he was useless now. The only thing that galled her, even now, was that, presented with his wish, his desire for dominance over his hated mother…\n\n He had no idea what to do.\n\n“Don’t be a fool, Necristo,” said the gnarled man again. “You’re almost dead, she has your power, and neither of you can do anything with it. Not in this place. Not with that knife.” \n\n*“Then join me!”* croaked Yhaga. *“Let this murderer kill us both! You wanted to die, didn’t you? You’ve wanted it all this while, so…”*\n\n“Mother? Who’s Anne?”\n\nThe question was like a slap in the face, it was so cold and measured. She searched Necri’s face, desperately, for some hint of lostness, some hint of the abandoned child he’d been, that she needed him to be. \n\n*“Not someone you need to concern yourself with, Necri. Not now. Please, I’m…”*\n\nNothing. His face was as cold as a marble wall, his hair like snow. The black blood that graced his hair and face was as still as faded ink, and his eyes were dead. \n\n“Matthias said that I was meant to care for her, Mother. Is this something you did? Did you take her, just like you took Matilda from me? Just like you took my power?” \n\n“Anne loves you,” said the gnarled man from behind. “I don’t know why, but she does. I won’t see you taken away from her, Necristo. Not like you took my Mattie.” \n\nSo, this was Matthias, then? That sniveling farmboy who had shown up at the mansion for his Matilda such a short while ago? So old and gray now? \n\nGood.   \n\n*“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, Necri. It was Matilda who gave you that wound in your chest. She made you lose your heart. It just so happened that your power came to me, because…”*\n\n“You stole it,” said Matthias. “It was your plan along, woman, even I can tell that. You’re not fooling anyone.” \n\n*“Because you love me!”* cried Yhaga victoriously. *“Because you’ve always loved me! Anne, Matilda, what are they? Nothing but slatterns after your power, what you earned by right to comfort me in my old age! In death, my dear Necri!”* \n\nMatthias took a step forwards, fists clenched, but it was Necri who spoke.\n \n“You’re right, Mother. I do love you.” \n\nA sliver of hope lit up Yhaga’s heart like sunlight. Bubbles of glee began to rise in her chest like so much froth. \n\n*“Yes. Yes, you do. And I…”* \n\nHe placed his cold hand on her cheek, his red eyes inert. \n\n“All I wanted was for you to love me back. It was why I went to Skalathos. I thought I could make you rich beyond your wildest dreams, give you everything you wanted. But when I got back…”\n\n*“I was dead. It doesn’t matter, Necri. We can live or die again, you and I. Whatever you want. We can pass together into oblivion, or regenerate our world, and stay together. Forever.”* \n\nThe red eyes shone for a moment in pain, like twin rivers of blood. His cold hand slipped down to her own and held it tight, as if afraid she would throw him off. \n\n“Perhaps… oh, Mother.”\n\nYes.\n\n“You’ve been dead for so very long, Mother.”\n\nYes!\n\n“Perhaps I should accept that.”\n\nYes… what? \n\n*“You… you useless waste of good wheat!”* she howled, pulling her hand from his and batting at his chest. *“I should have pried you from my womb a long time ago! I have your power anyway, and there’s nothing you can do about -”*\n\n“Isn’t there?” He was smiling now, a lost, wide, desperate smile. “Do you really mean to say that, Mother? Did you spend a hundred years learning how all of this works?” \n\n*“How dare you!”* she screamed, lashing out with all the strength in her, all the hatred in her seething heart, whatever she could use of her sorcery in this Space Between worlds. He reeled momentarily, stunned, and she scrambled up to flee - then there was a blur, a noiseless rush of movement around and behind her. A gnarled fist struck her in the face and she fell, almost senseless.  \n\n“Do it, Necristo,” said Matthias. “Before you change your mind.”\n\nNecri rose over her, torment written all across his face. For a single chilling moment, it occurred to Yhaga that this was exactly what she’d wanted. To hurt him beyond any possible comprehension, even beyond the bounds of death. To carry out her revenge on the son who’d left her alone in her hut with no-one to hate.  \n\n“Up until now, Mother, you’ve never seen me speak sorcery. But why, Mother… why did you assume that only wizards have written spells? Do you really think we don’t have ways to deal with things like this?” \n\nNo. This was impossible. How…\n\n**“I renounce you, my phantasm. With the blood on my hand and the hole in my chest I renounce you. With the power of my heart which beats in you I renounce you.”**\n\nHis eyes were wells of molten earth, now, blazing with the fire at the heart of the earth. His hand was on her forehead, burning wet, and she was shaking, the whole Space Between was shaking…\n\n*“No! Please!”*\n\n**“You are my creation. You are my memory made flesh. I have you in my power, under me, in me. Return to me. I renounce you, my phantasm.”** \n\nIt was like she was being torn apart, and for the first time in this magical existence, she remembered the feeling of pain. She groped, wildly, feebly, but the eyes of both men were hard. \n\n**“My heart is dead. I cannot live. My power lives. I cannot die. Return to me. With the invocation I bind you, break you, scatter you. I renounce you, my phantasm.**\n\n**“Begone.”** \n\nThe light that blazed from her was blinding. She howled a word that never came. The last of her memories vanished like a leaf on the wind, and when her fingers and face turned at last to liquid iridescent light, it was as if she had never lived.",
