      "body": "Coral reefs are to the oceans what humans have been to the land. Humans have built high-rises and colonies on land and so have the corals inside the oceans. Case in point - The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, said to be visible from outer space.\n\nThe only difference is that humans have been a predatory presence in the land based bio-ecosystems whereas corals share an endosymbiotic relationship with algae, thereby lending a rich biodiversity to vast swathes of coral reefs around the world.\n\nCorals - undoubtedly better-looking cousins of jellyfish and anemones - evoke feelings of awe-inspiring beauty and yet many of us are blissfully not aware of its taxonomy. I am afraid, many consider corals as aquatic plants. But in reality, Corals are polyps - marine invertebrates that belong to class Anthozoa of phylum Cnidaria. In layman terms, Corals are marine animals that secrete Calcium Carbonate to form a hard skeleton.\n\nAnd yet, it is because most Corals predominantly appear in tinges of Green is why they're considered as aquatic plants. That's because Corals harbor millions of algae that live inside their tissues. These algae photosynthesize and in turn, provide energy for the coral and aid in its calcification. The coral symbiotically provides a safe place for algae to grow. For the algae, the carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes (Ammonium) ejected by the coral are vital nutrients.\n\n![fish-378286_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPwe3FzusVfAX4zMQJi3ophartnvjhq6gF41nvgrmYXwh/fish-378286_1920.jpg)\n\n\nWhat is Coral Bleaching?\n\nDespite a symbiotic relationship between the algae and the coral, algae tend to put enormous strains on the coral. So, sometimes, it's not uncommon to observe corals ejecting algae out from their tissues. Under normal circumstances, this can mean nothing unusual. But in comes, warming of the oceanic waters due to Climate change and the scenario turns alarming.\n\nFrequent burning of fossil fuels in the last century has meant an exponential increase in Carbon Dioxide emissions. Unfortunately, Carbon Dioxide tends to stick around in the atmosphere and traps solar heat reflected by the earth, leading to what is commonly referred to as the Greenhouse Effect. This heat, entrapped under the stratosphere is readily absorbed by the oceanic waters. In a way, the ocean is doing us a huge favor by absorbing this heat or otherwise, the average surface temperature of the earth would have exceeded 122 degrees Fahrenheit by now.\n\nUnfortunately, this absorption of heat by the oceans has meant that now, more than ever, corals are under immense strain and experience unfavorable living conditions. When the water turns warmer, for short term survival, Corals tend to eject algae out of their living tissues. Lack of algae strains in their bodies means they reveal the true color of their skeletons i.e white. Hence, the term 'bleaching' as these corals don't harbor algae anymore. While bleached corals starve, they still can survive such short term disturbances.\n\n\nSo what? Why should I be worried about dying corals?\n\nIn the last decade or so, the incessant warming of the waters has driven algae away and the corals, once bleached tend to starve to death. These occurrences have only increased in frequency, as is evident by the ~29% destruction of the northern Great Barrier Reef in Australia.\n\nThis catastrophic event - bleaching of corals leading to their death - achieved mass scale and happened globally across varying oceanic regions in 2016.  You should be worried as hell and be scared to death with the corals dying all around. Here's why?\n\n\nNew research has indicated a direct correlation between starvation (food insecurity) and violence.\n\nCoral Reefs offer a three-dimensional structure and nutrients that enable a mind boggling diversity of fishes and other marine animals to thrive. Most of these fishes and other marine animals like prawns, crabs etc., are consumed by millions of humans globally and are the prime source of protein. According to estimates, over 1 billion humans depend on food from coral reefs for their daily sustenance. Now imagine, coral reefs continuing to die on a mass scale due to coral bleaching. That could mean apocalyptic scenarios for humanity. One wherein humans starving to is more than a likely possibility. And starvation throughout history is a precedent for humans stealing and killing each other. Do we want to go that route? Shudders!\n\n\nCoral Reefs are natural barriers to storms and tsunamis.\n\nIt's no surprise that corals dissipate the energy of unnatural humongous waves - generated during tsunamis or severe hurricanes/cyclones - given their ability to build large swathes of three-dimensional structures. These coral reefs thereby are very effective in protecting the adjacent land from the wrath of mother nature.\n\n\nCoral Reef helps treat Cancer.\n\nWhat? Are you kidding me?\n\nI kid you not. Coral reefs have been found to be rich in exotic fungi and bacteria, that have cancer-fighting compounds in abundance. Dolastatin 10, Ara-C, Ara-A and AZT are notable examples of antiviral and anti-cancer agents that are in active use. Scientists hope to synthesize anti-HIV drugs in the near future. Isn't this motivation alone to start working towards the preservation of coral reefs globally?",
