      "title": "We were made redundant, so we moved to the Canadian Rockies!",
      "body": "Less than 3 months ago I was looking out of the window of my office on a Monday morning thinking ‘What am I doing with my life?’  It was raining outside and the blank word document on my computer stared at me, begging for words to be written. \n\nIn pretty much every job I've ever had, I've had fantasies of being made redundant. For me it’s a guilt-free opportunity to do something different. I love change! (unfortunately loving change leaves you with only change left in your pocket!)\n\nThree months ago, my warped fantasy came true - on a dreary Monday morning, myself and my boyfriend (who worked for the same company) were given our one month’s notice of redundancy. I must have been elated right? Well, no….  it didn’t feel like I thought it would.  I actually enjoyed my job for once, we had just moved into our own little-rented house, we had lots of friends at work, we were earning good money and we struggled to see how we were going to get jobs that would match up. \n\nOn top of that, we had booked to go on holiday the following day, so after finding out our income source would soon cease, we had a 5 day trip to Scotland to think about it (whilst trying not to spend too much at the Edinburgh Fringe).\n\nI am so glad we took that holiday. Our decision to spontaneously move country can be pinpointed to one very brief conversation whilst driving our hire car through the Scottish Highlands;\n\nMe: “I imagine that this is what Canada looks like”\nHim: “Yeah it does,  just much bigger” (he travelled there for 3 months 10 years ago) \nMe: “Why don’t we move there for the winter? ”\nHim: “Interesting…” \n![39742490_10156721257055844_5289176839758020608_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWWRc6RZzSJuok6611XTueSfxNKiJ3CQMxSymEzAp1nSe/39742490_10156721257055844_5289176839758020608_n.jpg)\n*Exploring the Highlands  before the big move*\n\nOne week later and a bit of logistical mulling and the decision was made. We handed in our notice to our landlady, stopped looking for office jobs to replace our own and started looking for freelance work. \n\nAfter the initial excitement, panic started to set in. What if we couldn't get enough work? What if we couldn't find somewhere to live? What if I hate the cold? What if we didn't make friends, and so ended up spending too much time together, and tearing each other apart? What if a grizzly bear tore us apart? \n\nThree months on and I can say that it’s worked out pretty well. We have managed to rent an apartment in a town called Nelson in British Columbia. It’s in the mountains on the lake, and is costing us less than we were paying in the UK! We both have enough freelance work to just about sustain us (we’re both copywriters).       "body": "I remember the first time that I realised I was temporarily but glaringly  completely alone. I had no one around me, at least for thousands of miles, that I knew, no one to save me if everything went horribly wrong. \n\nI was terrified – I stayed in my room for 28 hours before I plucked up the courage to venture out of my budget hotel room in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and explore… \n\n![207259_4727490843_6113_n.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYPjUxS1iQDZhEt5hfooLzLrn1kfzRNxFT7fHDYzbNAUu/207259_4727490843_6113_n.jpg)\n*exploring the ruins of Angkor Wat aged 19*\n\nIt kind of happened by accident. The friend I was travelling with at age 19, ran out of money and decided to book a flight home, I still had money left and decided that I wanted to carry on going for a month or so.\n\n I truly believe that that snap decision changed the way I thought about travelling (and to a certain extent, life). \n\nSince then I have taken no less than 5 trips solo across India, Indonesia and Australia, and moved to Fiji for six months knowing absolutely no one. It just takes that first click in your brain to realise that you can do it – nothing can guarantee that it will work out well, nothing can guarantee that there won’t be hard times, but you can do it, it is possible and you may even come out of it stronger than before. \n\nHow travelling solo changes you: \n\n**1)You learn about the world** \n\n![13422177_10154294114690844_6909502424999108178_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUgjhFPKPKfmQPvxKHHdyYzw9ytwtVfd9wogpkNiuAyHp/13422177_10154294114690844_6909502424999108178_o.jpg)\n\nSure,  you can do this when you’re travelling with someone else too, but in my experience your awareness of the world around you is enhanced when you travel alone. You notice more things, you ask more questions, you meet more strangers. Something about being alone makes you absorb information more vividly – I tend to write it all down, little observations whilst travelling on a bus or train. You learn that you are capable of making confusing bus or train journeys and navigating another language to take you halfway across a country. You learn that your intuition counts for more than you think, as you make decisions about who to trust and who not to. If someone offered friendly advice I would automatically think they were trying to scam me, or worse.\n\n At the age of 19, perhaps this was wiser than being recklessly trusting, but as I travelled more, I began to realise that you HAVE to trust some people when you travel. \n\nI believe that 95% of people are good and for the 5% that are going to try to take advantage of you, you should be aware,  but that doesn’t mean that you should forgo all of the positive opportunities to connect with other well meaning people. Some of the most amazing experiences I’ve had whilst travelling involved trusting people I’d just met. \n\nTreat travelling like the rest of your life, don’t make reckless decisions and take risks, but equally don’t approach everyone with suspicion. I’ve always found that the first few days or weeks of a trip when I’ve come from my normal working life can be a mental tussle of feeling like I’m not doing enough floundering in a directionless haze. \n\nOnce I’ve allowed my mind to settle and begin to appreciate where I am, I experience a sense of calm and openness that I don’t experience elsewhere. There’s no better feeling than reconnecting with your loved ones after weeks or months away with hugs to give and stories to tell. \n\nIf you ever wanted to travel solo but don't think you have the courage - feel the fear and do it anyway! There will be ups and downs but you may just learn something new about yourself. I edit my photos in photoshop cs5 - but I rarely have to do much, its usually just to size them down a bit",
