The programming language was called ‘Cool’ when it was being developed, but for trademark reasons, it was changed last minute to C#.\n\nDeveloped by Microsoft as part of their .NET initiative, the language is backed by one of the companies that can be considered to have had a big, if not the biggest, influence on daily life and the growth of home computing.\n\nOn this day 4th in the top 5 of biggest companies in the world, you can be sure that Microsoft is not going anywhere and their technology and applications will not become obsolete in quite some years to come.\n\n<h3>Community</h3>\n\nHow important is it to have a community behind a programming language where you can find answers to all the problems you encounter on the way? This question almost answers itself, it’s vital if you want to be productive and do not want to mess around for hours trying to find a solution.\n\nOver the years the community around .NET has grown to be quite large, with people at different skill levels. Sites such as https://www.codeproject.com and https://www.stackoverflow.com provide an easy way to search for problems related to your own or post your own question where the big C# community can help you to find a solution.\n\n<h3>Easy to learn</h3>\n\nDeveloped to be easy to use and learn, C# does not expect you to do the more complex stuff like for example memory management. As a higher level language, most of the code is understandable by just reading it and it uses simple English words like ‘do, for, if, case,...’. Most C# code is clean, clutter-free and logical.\n\n<h3>Learning resources</h3>\n\nOn the Web, you can find plenty of resources to start to learn C#. Of course, I have to admit that it dates back a couple of years to when I was not developing in .NET that I used other tools, but even back then, Visual Studio had my preference.\n\nIt even has a free community edition which provides you with all functionality that you can find in the professional edition, the only difference is the licensing.\n\nThe drawback? Because it’s a full development environment and not a text editor it can be quite demanding of your system.\n\n<h3>Versatile</h3>\n\nSo what can you do with C#?\n\nWell first of all: desktop applications. You can easily create applications that you can run in Windows or even apps that you can sell in the Window store.\n\nIf web development is more up your alley, you can build a site powered by ASP.NET. The latest iteration, ASP.NET Core is open source and can be developed and run on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can be deployed both on a server and even in the cloud.\n\nWant to build games? Take a look at the <a href=\"https://unity3d.com/\">Unity game engine!</a> This game engine for 2D and 3D games uses C# as coding language. Just to name a few games which were made with Unity: Pokemon Go, Cuphead, Subnautica, Hearthstone and many others.\n\nFor app development you can use the <a href=\"https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/xamarin/\">Visual Studio tools for Xamarin</a>. With this, you can use your C# knowledge to build apps for both iOS and Android.       "body": "The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a sailing race around the world held in 1968, spoke to the imagination of the whole world. A £5000 prize was offered to the winner of the race around the world via the great capes and at the start, there were nine men, and the story of one of those men is one of them was Donald Crowhurst, let us take a look at his unbelievable, but tragic story.\n\n<center>![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/800x400/https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeUE5tcVLKCNRkN2w9JvN7k4bVZBpUggBkCDezT8yqJUB/image.png)</center>\n\n<h3>Who was Donald Crowhurst</h3>\n\nDonald Crowhurst was born in British-India. His mother longed deeply for a baby girl, and for that reason, Donald was dressed as a girl until the age of seven. After the family moved back to England, they lost all their retirement savings due to a fire in the factory the family had invested in.\n\nCrowhurst had to quit school early in his life, aged only 16, his father had died and there was no money to pay for his further education. For a short time, Crowhurst served in the army, after he left he started his own business. Although he designed a handheld device that allowed sailors to navigate with marine and aviation beacons, and he had some success in selling navigational equipment, his business, in general, was failing.\n \nWhen the race was announced, he saw an opportunity to gain some publicity and promote his business. He found sponsors and took mortgages on both his home and business right before the race to finance everything, hoping that the race would provide him a solution to his financial problems. As you can tell, Crowhurst had a lot at stake.\n\n<h3>The Race</h3>\n\nOn the final day that it was permitted, Donald Crowhurst began his journey with a boat that had not enough supplies, was not equipped for a long voyage and on top of that, he did not have a lot of experience with the type of boat, a trimaran.\n\nIn the first weeks after he left, it was clear that Crowhurst lacked the skills to sail the boat, and either he could forfeit now and face his financial situation, or continue and have a realistic chance of dying out on the ocean.\n \nBut Crowhurst had a plan, he would wait in the South Atlantic until the other boats were on their way back there, send vague and false reports of his location, and then follow the other boats when they were on their return to England. As he did not plan to win the race, he did not think they would investigate his logs in detail.\n\n<center>![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPBXnRa4q8XGyds92XsgbyrkXqaqd7zGkJ8jPxE3MAFE2/image.png)</center>\n\n<h3>The tragic ending</h3>\n\nThe only thing Crowhurst did not foresee, was that most of his competitors had to forfeit the race. Based on his false reports, people were convinced that Crowhurst still had a good chance to win the race. The problem was, if he would win the race, they would examine his log book for sure, revealing all of his lies.\n\nHe would never make it to the end. Based on his log entries, his mental state got from bad to worse. He made his last radio transmission on June the 29th and his last log entry dates July 1st.\n\nThe boat was found on the 10th of July. Based on the state of the boat, it is believed that Crowhurst either fell or jumped overboard and drowned in the ocean.",

      "body": "<h3>What are you even talking about?</h3>\n\nWhen you retrieve data from a server, it's often not exactly in the format that you want to display it to your users.\n\nChanging the format of the data directly on the server is in most cases not a very good idea or, if you don't have any control over the server-side code, impossible.\n\nThe solution is to make a pipe to manipulate our data and show it in the correct format to our user. In this post, I will create a simple pipe that will capitalize the first letter of a word or sentence.\n\n<h3>The capitalize pipe</h3>\n\nOur capitalize pipe will transform an input string and capitalize the first letter of each word.\n\nWhen creating a pipe it is important to use the Pipe decorator and implement the PipeTransform interface. This provides us with a function in which we can transform our data.\n\ncapitalize.pipe.ts\n```\nimport { Pipe, PipeTransform } from '@angular/core';\n\n@Pipe({name: 'capitalize'})\nexport class CapitalizePipe implements PipeTransform{\n\n    transform(value: any, args: string[]):any {\n        if (!value){\n            return value;\n        }\n\n        return value.replace(/\\b\\w/g, function(txt) {\n          return txt.charAt(0)\n            .toUpperCase() +\n            txt.substr(1)\n              .toLowerCase();\n        });\n    }\n}\n```\n<br/>\n\n<h3>Pure - Impure</h3>\nImportant to note here is the optional parameter for our pipe decorator. Optionally, we could indicate that our pipe is not pure in our Pipe annotation \nPipe({name:'capitalize', pure:false})\n\nA pure pipe does not have state and the output of the function will only change when there is a different input. Because of this, change detection will only happen when the input value changes. This also means that Angular can use the same pipe in multiple places, and only one instance will be created.\n\nHowever, when you pass an object that has state to an impure pipe, Angular will create an instance every time you use the pipe. Change detection will happen more often, as there can be a different output if the state changes. To be 5 minutes quicker to sit behind their desk at work for the rest of the day. Ok maybe a generalization, but there are a lot of people like that. People should drive a bit more mindful, they will maybe lose 5 minutes of work but gain a lot more in peace of mind.",

      "body": "Over 290 people in total did not survive their attempt to climb the highest mountain on earth, and the last known year without anyone dying has been over 40 years ago. Even with these facts and a mortality of 5% does Mount Everest still spark a fire in the hearts of every adventurer out there. Every year people risk their lives in order to follow their dreams and get their name added to the list of already more than 6000 people that reached the top.\n\n<center><img src=\"https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQma4Eh34r6BAedC7WnoPTmmYnTPNnKdGUVgtd3FnsNm2xs/image.png\" alt=\"Everest from Rongbuk valley\"/></center>\n\nOn the top of Mount Everest at 8848 meters high, the air only contains about a third of the oxygen at sea level. Before the invention of bottled oxygen, it was impossible for humans to survive in this so-called 'death zone'. The freezing inhumane temperatures also provided an additional challenge to overcome.\n\n<h3>George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine</h3>\n\n<center>![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmchguM23zzL9iufEJUy87pYLcVnLBLrmEAR59tTM6V7D5/image.png)</center>\n\nThe first people to try to reach the top with additional oxygen were George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine. At first Mallory considered the use of extra oxygen cheating, and in his opinion real climbers should not use it, but in after some time he admitted that he did not see how climbing Mount Everest was possible without bringing additional oxygen.\n\nTheir expedition had a tragic end. A member of their expedition saw them for the last time 275 meters away from the top. They would never return to their base and it's unsure if they succeeded on that day or not. In 1999 the remains of Mallory were found 700 meters from the highest point by a search expedition. They did not find the body of Irvine, or their camera, on which they hoped to find out what happened and if they were possibly even the first ones to reach the summit.\n\n<h3>British Mount Everest expedition</h3>\n\n<center>![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVpman1hgTNdcNfjk8h5CRJQ5dbbYv9KA6aY4TeQ2gnFi/image.png)</center>\n\nKnowing everything about the story of Mallory and Irvine, and having read all about them, the New Zealander Edmund Hillary had much admiration and was inspired. He left with the British Mount Everest expedition on the 10th of March 1953 on the way to base camp. From there they planned their route and supplies were brought in by the local teams of Sherpas. In the next week, slowly the expedition got higher up the mountain, and on the way, they created 6 more camps. The first team that went for the last climb set out on 26 May. They had to return just 100 meters short because of equipment problems and exhaustion.\n\n<center><img title=\"By Jamling Tenzing Norgay (http://www.tenzing-norgay-trekking.de) [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html) or CC BY-SA 3.0  (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons\" src=\"https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPSar7o8KttpzSJPqh7cuUgjrchUUjhvTrWqB4oTtqBto/image.png\" alt=\"Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay\"/></center>\n\nOn the 27th of May Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the second party to take a shot at reaching the summit. Even though Hillary was never absolutely confident that they would be successful, they managed to reach the top at 11:30am 29th of May. They stayed some time admiring the view never before seen by another human being and eternalized it by taking pictures. Hillary his first words after returning to the camp to his fellow expedition member George Lowe were \"Well, George, we knocked the bastard off\".\n\n<h3>Who was first?</h3>\n\nThe question that a lot of people were interested in was who reached the top first, Hillary or Norgay. The answer was always kept secret by the 2 men, or as Hillary put it \"We shared the work, the risks and the success – it was a team effort and nothing else is important.\" Only after Tenzing died in 1986 did Hillary admit that he was the first one to reach the summit and he pulled Norgay in after him. Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88 in 2008.",
